1) Reed and Doom were not just college students in the movie; they were graduate students. There is a documentary about the story behind the movie called " DOOMED- the untold story of Roger Corman's the Fantastic Four ". Fox wanted to hold on to the rights. Stan Lee knew about it and even visited the set. I feel bad for the actors, they got the short end of the stick.
The little girl who said "He's dreeeeeamy," while standing at the bottom of a flight of stairs at the beginning was the blond girl from summer camp in The Addams Family (and later played Harmony on the Buffy series)!
My favorite story I heard about this movie is that the actors who played Reed, Johnny, the Thing, and Doom paid their own money to go to a local Convention and present the movie. They had no idea it was never supposed to come out. They actually got to the Con in a Van, and Roger got a hold of them and stopped them before they could go inside. Really, the only reason this movie came out is because some people who worked on it ripped some VHS copies and leaked it.
And now for actual Comic Book Geek Knowledge. The reason in Canon for the Fantastic Four (and many Marvel Superheroes) to have outfits that they wear all the time was actually because of Reed Richards. Early in the run, Reed invented "Unstable Molecules," a substance that could be turned in to fabric. It's main ability is it's not affected by the powers of the wearer. Which is how Reed can stretch in it, and Johnny can "Flame On!" and not end up naked.
@@famijher So if the fabric is not affected by the powers...how can Sue get invisible in it wearing that? which brings us to the only memorable scene of FF1 and Jessica Alba...
@@voxdraconia4035 Sorry, Unstable Molecules operate by the Scientific Principles known Officially as "Comics BS." They will never be negatively affected by the wearers powers, but will always be positively affected by them.
My absolute favorite moment in this or any Fantastic Four movie is when Alicia gets abducted, and as she's blacking out, we get a brief POV shot. From the POV of a BLIND character. It is just...so good. 😂
I honestly think the Fantastic Four is a cursed intellectual property when it comes to film adaptations. Not one film has been good, and Roger Corman himself didn't want this movie released!
First off, great Old Gods shirt! I helped review this for another site a long time ago, and I remember thinking this movie was actually charming for what it was. Definitely low-budget and cheesy as all hell, but as a Corman-level superhero movie, it's certainly not the worst movie I've seen. The Thing suit also looks way better than you'd think with the money spent on this project. The space phenomenon in the comic book was "cosmic rays," and Doom was not with them when it happened.
I bought VHS bootleg this at a comic convention in 1996. This film was only made to keep the film rights and never was supposed to be released. What is awful is the producers lied to the actors and told them it was.
from what ive heard, it had to be released to hold the rights. The vhs was release in rental stores for a super short period, like one day and was called back instantly. Thats why there are bootlegs around.
Strange how this movie has the best (kind of) Dr. Doom. The FoxDoom was turned into a metal endoskeleton that could shoot lasers, and FoxDoom 2 looked like C-3PO fùcked a Jiffy Pop. I'm hoping Marvel does him cinematic justice finally. That was a fun video, I'll seeya guys on Sunday!!!
Yeah, this Doom is bad, but it's the least bad. And honestly, if they actually planned to ever release the movie, and they let the poor actor loop his lines, it could've been a lot better.
Ironic given they just dropped the first tease of the new FF in the 60s. This film is admirable but man oh man did it need more money or better timing. It's fine for what it is. The FF films for me range form being ok to dull to really bad and not one of them is above ok, i hope that changes.. The Penguin guy is supposed to be Mole Man. Not Hans lol
Probably the best version of the Fantastic Four is the animated series Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes. It gets the characters right and has some surprisingly deep and well-written scenes, with villains from the original comics but done in a way that works for a modern audience. This movie is fun, but Dr Doom is one of the best villains ever, and it's a shame how few people outside of comic fans ever get to see Doom at his best because film portrayals just don't do him justice. Here's hoping we'll eventually get a great Doom in live action!
Despite Reed's, uh, attributes, Sue has a long-term affair with Namor. It's implied Reed knows but looks the other way because he's self-aware enough to recognize he's more emotionally invested in science than his romantic relationship. Delighted to hear a return of "B double-E double R U N" in this episode!
Yes, Doctor Doom has a castle. He was the ruler of an entire country, after all. He probably had several castles. Also, this had a million dollar budget and had some really basic effects...goes to show that if you wanted a movie to look halfway decent you'd need something more than that. And at the very least some people who know what they're doing. xD But hell, the people who made this went for it at least, even it never got fully released.
Compared to the Reb Brown Captain America of the 70s, or the 1990 version, or that super lame David Hasselhoff Nick Fury TV movie, or worst, Steel, this is a freakin' masterpiece! It actually *tries* to be faithful to the comic books, even if it's a little silly at times.
I bought a bootleg VHS copy of this and Heavy Metal at the Portland Comic Book Show in '94 for $20 each. Yes, we were that starved for comic book movies back then. Today, we have the exact opposite problem.
The thing about this movie never having seen a proper release is that is was made mainly so that german company Constantin Film could renew the license rights. They had to make use of said license to do so. Enter Roger Corman.
The original guy they hired for the computer effects lied about his experience. They had very little time and budget to get anything done. The part where Johnny flies into the laser beam and gets spun around etc. is one-for-one copied from one of the 1940s Fleischer Superman shorts, which are amazing by the way. The studio wouldn't put anything into promotion, so the director and cast got together and went to various conventions and stores promoting it themselves until they were forced to stop. They were very serious and proud of what they did, even though they knew it was cheesy and cheap, and they wanted it to be finished and seen. It was a very guerrilla production at the end as they were being abandoned due to a secret deal being made behind the scenes to junk the film and eventually make the FOX FF movie we got. The actor who played Doom, who was the son of the late great character actor Robert Culp, said in the documentary about the film that he is still willing to do the voice of Doom if they ever want to finish it.
The Fantastic Four (1994, unreleased) Bernd Eichinger of Constantin Film acquired the film rights of the Fantastic Four from Marvel Comics in 1986. In order to maintain the rights, Eichinger hired Roger Corman in 1992 to produce a low-budget film. Source Wikipedia.
Dr Doom is awesome. He does live in a castle, because he owns his own country in eastern europe. He's also a genius in science and the occult. He's really the ultimate good guy, he knows he can only save the world and humanity by becoming a dictator, all the omniscient gods admit he's right. Also, doombots. I like the Venture Bros fantastic four stand ins, where the human torch guy is in agony when he's on fire.
How this didn't get more done to make it worthwhile, yet Howard The Duck was finished and released years earlier, I cannot fathom. Marvel was mostly behind DC when it comes to movies for many, many years.
The story of this movie is fascinating. In short Roger Corman was used to test a Fantastic Four movie. He thought he was being honestly employed to make the film but he got back stabbed by Marvel who canned the whole project. They even banned him from keeping any copies of the film. He did anyway and finished the movie in very restricted conditions. What he produced is a way better film than the reputation has it. I have a copy on dvd and it's actually a really good film. It suffers from having it's budget pulled half way through and the production team having to cobble together the finished project in secret with very limited resources. But, the essence of it is very good. And the Thing costume is remarkably good. If Marvel gave Corman their full backing it could have been the start of the Fantastic Four getting the attention they deserved. While I think all the FF movies had merit, they were not quite where the fans would have liked them to be. Roger Corman got closer to the real essence of the FF on film than probably anyone else.
So this film was made in an insanely short amount of time, like a couple of weeks before the rights lapsed. It exists purely to prevent the rights from reverting to the original owners. They never in tended to release the film, but none of the actors were ware of this. It's why they all give decent performances. They had a few well respected in the industry, but not well known in general actors in the cast. Even they young Sue Storm was played by Mercedes McNabb, who went on to play a lot of Guest Starring and recurring roles over the next couple of decades. No one is quite sure how it ever got leaked. Honestly, It is a pity they didn't put in the time to do the audio work and colour grading, and then actually release it. As hokey as It is, when it comes to the storyline, it is the most accurate and coherent, and therefore it is the best live action Fantastic Four film.
Agreed - it's interesting to watch as it is very faithful to the comics, the main cast is decent, and it's basically a television film, but unfinished. This was made in the same bracket as the Return of the Incredible Hulk films, similarly cheap. and in the context of early 90s films of this kind a lot of it stands up. It was never going to be any sort of classic, and yet you can definitely see real potential in there. If only it had a little more money spent on it, and had proper audio finishing and effects...
I saw that same VHS rental ad from a Blockbuster tape, Jason. Only watched this film free on UA-cam recently. It's hokey but it was made super-cheap just for the rights, the cast and crew had to finish it themselves once they realized they were being screwed on purpose. One thing I want to mention is that Sue can be incredibly dangerous in comics (she has smacked around Doom a few times, including turning his armor invisible so his disfigurement is exposed for everyone to see). And Ben/Thing is very strong and resilient, having fought the Hulk multiple times (he was facially scarred for a while by Wolverine's claws).
I’ve read that too. They made the movie not really to be good but instead to keep the rights. It was a contractual obligation in order to maintain the movie rights
As a comic book geek who’s been collecting since the late 70s, I love comic movies, even the horrible ones with the exception of the Fant4stic movie that came out. I am looking forward to seeing the new one that the MCU is releasing. The Thing is my favorite character. He always has been. I can’t wait to see him yelling, “It’s clobbering time!” On the big screen again.
Baron Von Unterbeit from Venture Bros was a take off of Dr Doom from F4 cmc books. Doom was some kind of Royalty and leader of a hellish USSR type of country and had a castle and everything but he was like an evil wizard or something.
And now were watching a documentary about this version. Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four It's free on Tubi, Vudu, Freevee, etc. Thanks for starting me down this rabbit hole 😂
The charm of Canon/Corman's movies! The movie was made for almost nothing and in a super rush just to keep the rights of the franchise from what I understand. Anyway this is still way more fun than the 2015 version!!!
On the Reed/Sue age topic - People forget that just a few years before the FF came out, girls marrying young was the norm.....Many girls in the 50's were married by the time they were 15, (or even 14) to men that were usually 10-15 years older than them. It was even more common 30 years before that....In the depression, young girls were married off because it gave the parents one less mouth to feed (pretty harsh) - so the concept of an older Reed and a younger Sue was not viewed as being super cringy back then.
Ok so some character background. The four characters got their superpowers after exposure to cosmic rays during a scientific mission to outer space. You've got Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), considered the smartest man in the world and the leader of the group, who can stretch his body into incredible lengths and shapes; the Invisible Woman (Susan "Sue" Storm-Richards), Reed's girlfriend and later wife, who can render herself invisible and project powerful invisible force fields and blasts; the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), Sue's younger brother, who can generate flames, surround himself with them and fly; and the Thing (Ben Grimm), Reed's college roommate and a skilled pilot, who possesses superhuman strength, durability and endurance due to his stone-like flesh...and yes his entire body including his internal organs are all made of stone. He also had a relationship with Alicia Masters, a blind artist who didn't care about his physical state. So Victor Von Doom has a castle because he is a Monarch of the country Latveria. Throughout his story, he has had actual powers from the same or similar accident as the Four, he has just been a super genius who invents machines to give himself powers, and he has had the abilities of a sorcerer through teaching himself the magic arts, so his abilities very.
The Jeweller was meant to be The Mole Man but the rights were so limited that they had to crap out an original character to fill the gap.

Perfect timing, considering the casting news for the movie, that was released today whoop whoop!
I honestly think the Fantastic Four is a cursed intellectual property when it comes to film adaptations. Not one film has been good, and Roger Corman himself didn't want this movie released!
I remember seeing this at a bootleg party. It's on par with the ridiculous Captain America with the rubber ears.
Is that the one where he fakes being sick to steal cars?
Looking forward to watching that soon.
The Red Skull is Italian in that Captain America movie…🤦🏻♂️
@@Riplee86yes, repeatedly. Somehow that's Caps go to move
@@crankfastle8138 I always appreciated that little nod to it in the Winter Soldier movie.
My childhood has never been so offended, yet so amused. Glorious.
This was definitely better than the reboot they did that had a computer generated thing.
Let's be honest here. This is probably way better than whatever the hell Disney has cooking up.
I have no doubt this is more fun.
C-3po fucked a jiffy pop has me dying 😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah, this Doom is bad, but it's the least bad. And honestly, if they actually planned to ever release the movie, and they let the poor actor loop his lines, it could've been a lot better.
Ironic given they just dropped the first tease of the new FF in the 60s.
This film is admirable but man oh man did it need more money or better timing. It's fine for what it is. The FF films for me range form being ok to dull to really bad and not one of them is above ok, i hope that changes..
The Penguin guy is supposed to be Mole Man. Not Hans lol
The mumbling mask guy "mmmnnff fnnngg rruuungggfff" 😭😭 lol 😂
And at the very least some people who know what they're doing. xD
But hell, the people who made this went for it at least, even it never got fully released.
I love how the spaceship just completely exploded. Corman never disappoints.
They survived without a scratch. Amazing stuff.
Doom’s voice sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher! 😂😂😂
6:18 "stands on its own," -- a monolith, if you will...
Well as someone who read the comics they never captured the greatest of these characters, great reaction from you and great cameo from the dog.
Just by sheer chance, I was telling my mate that this film exists around the time you posted this video. What an amazing coincidence!
The Fantastic Four (1994, unreleased)
Bernd Eichinger of Constantin Film acquired the film rights of the Fantastic Four from Marvel Comics in 1986. In order to maintain the rights, Eichinger hired Roger Corman in 1992 to produce a low-budget film. Source Wikipedia.
By the way, Alex Hyde-White as Mr Fantastic, loved him in Biggles and the movie as well.
Pity it went almost unnoticed cause of Back to the future.
Made a similar comment before reading the other comments. Really remember liking that movie a lot!
@@jtmotley8848 I still think that movie is great and I still remember the theme song after all of these years)

I feel like hell today thank you for posting this today I need it. Can't wait to see what this movie brings. Love the channel big fan from NJ!!📼📼🍻🍻🤘🤘
Doom lives in a medieval-style castle, ruling over the nation, Latveria.
How this didn't get more done to make it worthwhile, yet Howard The Duck was finished and released years earlier, I cannot fathom. Marvel was mostly behind DC when it comes to movies for many, many years.
I loved that they actually had Johnny Flame fully engulfed in fire... almost like some sort of torch but still a human ya know?
goddamn thank you for the link. ive wanted to see this forever!
I cannot tell a lie! I prefer this to all other Fantastic 4 movies...
A couple "legal" uses for invisibility that a friend came up with: 1) join the circus and become an act. 2) become a magician's assistant.
Your timing on this was IMPECCABLE since they released the cast for the new one today…
Why they didn't bring Corman back for the new one is beyond me. He got the source material better than the big studios.
Awesome shirt Brian 🤘
I took way too long to notice Brian's Old Gods of Asgard T-shirt. Hell yeah.
I just finish watching a video about this movie, hit refresh and you guys have a video out about it. The algorithm is becoming a precog
The Things costume is taken from the Jack Kirby version.
Here`s a fun list for you guys. "Kung Fury", "Iron Sky", "Iron Sky" (The coming Race) and "Velocipastor".
Always a great time with you two/three.
The new pup is a cutey.
A little disappointed you didn't show off your poster. ;)
How was the beer?
Holy crap, is THIS that F4 movie they referenced on Arrested Development?
I’ve read that too. They made the movie not really to be good but instead to keep the rights. It was a contractual obligation in order to maintain the movie rights
I hope you have Albert Pyuns, ‘Captain America’ too
Albert Pyun did that? Really??
I do, that movie is Stupid fun!!!
@@JasonBrant Yes he did, came out in 1990 and it stars one of the jocks from REVENGE OF THE NERDS.

The stretched arm at the end done me, tea everywhere, I couldn't stop laughing 😅
So much better than recent FF efforts. The waving arm at the end caught/ me by surprise 😂😂
Baron Von Unterbeit from Venture Bros was a take off of Dr Doom from F4 cmc books. Doom was some kind of Royalty and leader of a hellish USSR type of country and had a castle and everything but he was like an evil wizard or something.
Shout out to Brian with the Old Gods of Asgard shirt!
Been a minute since I laughed this hard at an episode. Nicely done
I think I remember reading that Thing's costume in this movie was made by the same costume designers that made the 1990 TMNT movie suits.
22:25 i already knew this was coming, the looks on your faces are fùcking PLATINUM!!!!
21:05 Oh hey look, it that blinking light laser prop that's in almost every scifi tv series and movie from the 80s!
"What about the fire? Is it hand painted or something?" actually, surprisingly, it was an early CG effect! Probably cost most of the $1m budget, too.
And now were watching a documentary about this version.
Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four
It's free on Tubi, Vudu, Freevee, etc.
Thanks for starting me down this rabbit hole 😂
5:16 AH yes, the titular and iconic line
Netflix, or Tubi, had a documentry about this film on it with cast and crew interviews, including Corman himself. It's a FANTASTIC watch. 😁
When I saw you guys post about it I knew my first time watching it HAD to be with you y'all!!
He's pert near invincible. He and the hulk duke it out and it's a close one
@2:42 I def remember the huge satellite dishes of the 80's. I also remember the old cable channel WHT.
18:07 Beer Run! Love that song.
Doom definitely has a castle in Doomstadt, the capital city of Latveria. ; p
This is better than all the other F4 films!!! At least they knew it was bad :-)
13:14 what you dont realise is that actor then went on to voice jar jar binks "How Wude!"
That wasn't a leprechaun coming out of the sewer, it was a cameo appearance by none other than Rudy Guiliani.
