1. Hi Andrea, I’ve so enjoyed these videos! I wanted to also ask some knitwear design questions. I have wondered what program you use for charting? How do you get inspiration for a design? How long was it before you moved into sweater design? Thanks so much!

3. Two more questions for ya: 1) Do you ever use a yarn bowl when knitting? Why or why not? (Personally I haven't found them to be more helpful at keeping yarn untangled or better for stranded knitting, per se, but I love the decorative touch they can bring. Just curious to hear your thoughts!) 2) What are your thoughts on charted versus written patterns? I'm very comfortable with charted patterns but am interested to hear a designer's take on this. i.e. Do you feel the need to provide written instructions for a pattern even if you started from a charted version?

5. I’m sorry this is off topic, but I have wondered about it for a long time and just have to ask. Is your husband the Pete half of the duo Pete Peterson? I went to Michigan State in the early 2000s and was a big fan (bought their CD and everything). When you mentioned him on your Instagram I was like, whoa small world! Now I’m fans of you both! (I’m really sorry if it isn’t him lol!)
6. Does spicy Pete use manual mode for shooting? And does he shoot in raw?

ISO is like fireflies. The more there are, the brighter your picture will be.
My husband caught me smiling and giggling. I don’t know how long he stood before I noticed, but when I looked up, we both burst into laughter. The thing is, he was smiling, too; thank you for that. I could genuinely listen to you all day. Hugs, Heather.
Andrea and Pete - your Find Your Fade photo shoot is still to this day one of the most beautiful photo essays I have seen. Everything about it is magical: the light, the beauty of the shawl design, the intensity of the yarn colour ways, and the love felt in every frame capturing the gorgeous designer (model!). To find out that it was shot in a hurry, not long after having had a baby, and under pressure to get back to your new baby is even more endearing. I agree with Spicey Pete - it's the best! xoxo

I love that you show us your knitting and spinning journals - I'm definitely playing with multiple ways of having all my ideas and projects in one place, so your comment about an index is really helpful!
Bullet journaling is THE BEST !!!!!!!! I started bullet journaling about 7 years ago and I love it for keeping my world running. It’s brilliant for adapting to what you need and making it work for your life. An index and migrating collections will definitely help you keep track projects across notebooks. I’m so excited for you!
ISO is sort of the sensitivity of the light on the sensor. So if you're shooting outside in the bright sunlight you can set it to 50, 100, or 200. If you're shooting at night, or a dark room you would probably be around 1600, 2000, 2500 - this is going to let the sensor pick up more light BUT generally at the cost of a more 'noisy' image (think of grain on film images// less clear photos when zoomed in, or weird artifacts in dark areas of the photo) You can use this as a way to play around with your shutter speed and aperture though which is really cool... so lets say you are shooting in the sun but want to shoot with a high depth of field (f22 - everything would be in focus, maybe a landscape) you can open up your ISO to give you more light. (the other option normally would be to use a tripod and slow shutter speed to get the same light, but maybe you didn't bring a tripod.). But generally ISO is what you turn to when you can't afford to open up your aperture any more, or cant go any slower on your shutter speed, you can adjust ISO. ISO is the digital 'film'. For anyone old enough to remember seeing film rolls with Kodak 400... that 400 is the film sensitivity, so todays ISO.
Raw for anyone who read through all of that and is still interested like you mentioned Andrea, is the complete file with all of the light information stored in it. White balance and exposure are easily editable here. Raw is great because its super forgiving, you can fix ~most~ errors after the fact in an editing software.. with JPG what you shot is what you get basically. I'm not sure if this is still accurate for most cameras, but you used to not be able to shoot RAW unless you were in specific camera modes.. generally Manual and one or two others, so be careful with that if you're interested in shooting Raw!

This is correct. Additionally the ISO is a throwback term from the days of using actual film. It indicates how sensitive, or how quickly the “film” captures the light. On a film camera you’d set it according to the speed of film you’ve loaded in the camera. 400 was basically “standard”, 200 or lower meant for outdoor/ bright light, and 800 or higher for low light scenarios. The higher the number the more “grainy” the look.
When I took a photography class the teacher explained it something like letting a bunch of kids into a school all at once or having them walk single file…🤔 I just know higher iso photos can be more noisy lol.

Thank you for a lovely and informative episode. Just thought I’d mention the way I try garments on for measurement. I mostly use interchangeable needles, so I just pop off one of the needle tips, and add on an extra long cable with a cable connector. This works also, if you need to wash the garment, before finishing it. You just pop on the stoppers that most of these sets have.

The knitting barber cords are magic! I don't know how I lived without them.
Love the science behind why I can knit with wool and feel so much warmer than my older acrylic things. I live in Wisconsin so it’s important to keep warm!

I have Chiagoo interchangeable needles. To try on sweaters I like to use the cable connectors. I unscrew one needle tip. Screw on a connector and another of my long cables. Rotate stitches on to my now really long cable. Try it on. Then I just unscrew the cable connector and long cable, screw back on the needle. Done. No having to thread stitches on to a tapestry needle or separate circular needle. With a secure twist on the connector there’s no risk of the cables coming apart.

Catching up on all your videos. LOVE that you use all the Adobe Creative Cloud products. I have been at Adobe for 25 yrs and I was one of the first product managers on InDesign in the late 90’s. Because of my background, I now primarily focus on all of our international products across CC…but I am always so excited to know when people I follow in my hobby life use what I work on in my professional life. 💕

hey Andrea, have you ever seen the TUL notebooks? All of the pages pop in and out and you can get the paper lined, gridded or dot-gridded. And it has dividers! Just thinking you could pull notes out of there and file them as needed

I think of ISO as film. You're probably too young to remember, but we used to use different ISO films - the higher the number the less sensitive to light. So very dark situations needed higher ISO.
ISO has, also, to do with the quality of a picture, like resolution. Like Lauren said, ISO has to do with film, specifically with the size of the grain in film: the bigger the grain, the more sensitive it is to light, but also the bigger the "pixel", so you lose definition compared to a smaller grain. ISO 400 is more sensitive to light, so it needs less exposure to capture light, but also has less definition than ISO 200, for example.

Cool... about using Illustrator for your design work. I am a graphic designer and I use all the same programs. My cousin who also is a knitwear designer and she uses Adobe Illustrator as well. I am an avid knitter and crocheter for years and I am just starting to design my own knitwear.

I would use the bullet journal as may index so I could keep knitting and spinning separate (for me it is knitting and crochet). I also. have an 'image bank' or mood board that I delve into when starting a new project.
Hi from Michigan! I totally agree about notebooks. I am not a designer but all the notes on everything I knit goes into notebooks. And I also love a handheld book when reading! Old school for sure..lol.
Thanks for all you do. I cherish the memory of meeting you on the "hill" at Rhinebeck in 2019. We even had our picture taken together with the Spincycle gals! Have you been to their new brick and mortar? Exciting!

I second the rolags off a drum carder! My favorite spinning prep, way more efficient than a blending board.

I have the same problem with ebooks, they just don’t stick! I also hand write the patterns I am knitting, it helps me go over the whole pattern so there is no surprises and I read from it better when it’s on paper. It also helps me have a note of what size I knit and any edits to the pattern I make. I can reference them for later if I am knitting something else and want the sleeve to fit a certain way or a length I liked!
I always did that when I knit other peoples patterns! So helpful and I loved that I then had my own "personalized" directions if I wanted to remake the pattern again in the future.
I love a fluffy flake too! Be it an actual snowflake (which i am praying for snow in NC this year!) or u know.. a fluffy flake of a person, which i kinda identify as most days 😂

I try my sweaters in progress on with my needles still in. I always use a 40in cord length so it goes around me just fine.

I've been wanting to learn woolen spinning. I've tried long draw a few times but I think I've always picked not so good learning fibers (usually with some silk content). I know you learned in person (I wish). Can you mention any online resources you know of to learn long-draw?

No azure how to ask questions, but mine is:
Why do sweaters that I knit, even with short rows along the upper back, hike up in the front neck area after wearing for a few minutes. They just won't stay seated on my shoulders and I keep having to adjust the sweater to sit properly on my shoulders. I need for the front neck area to stay dropped down in place. Thank you!
Hmmm, I wonder if you just need more shaping. You could try doing more short rows to deepen the length at the back neck so the front neck drops more. Or you may be better suited to scoop neck sweaters instead of crew.
Not sure if here is the right place to post a question. If any one to addressed it please do so. Just purchased a pattern that I thought could be a good one to try. Surprise surprise reading the chart I just hit the brakes really fast 😅 so here is my question: what it means a no stitch in a knitting chart? Thank you.

In a yoke? Probably before an increase so there’s no stitch there. Or after a decrease so again no stitch there to knit.

Yep! So it means that there’s no stitch to knit on that row as it’s a row with fewer total stitches.
