    Making a Tesla Coil in High School Physics course made this seem logical to me. It's all about the voltage & spark gap ratios! & the magnetism.💯

    What is the best application?
    For sequential
    coil on plug internal igniter

    I have the 2500 and am going to use new oem subaru coils. I'm not sure if their internal ignitors will completely control dwell on their own. I also notice in the haltech map for the sti I'm using, the lowest dwell is 3.6ms. I also can't see the voltage range (top of the graph) on my laptop, the only numbers I actually see are the dwell settings. This is something extremely important I need to figure out before the tune. Thanks for the great helpful videos..as always!

    Quick tip: I’ve also been able to find dwell time in factory service manuals. If memory serves, Nissan VQ35 was 1.3 or 1.8 ms (obviously my memory isn’t that good)

    With regards to the msd vs stock dyno test, it might be more appropriate to do a fuel mileage test instead. On my car my msd box makes it start and idle just a bit better and I went from 27 to 28 mpg

    16:05 You are understandably simplifying things a bit here. Maximum current for the coil also depends on current limiting in the ignition module. For example, for a 1.0 ohm coil and 12 volts this implies you can have 12 Amps, and for a 0.5 ohm coil, you can have 24 Amps, but most systems you'd see in production or modified production cars aren't drawing 12 Amps through the coil. What happens is the first part of the curve comes from the coil resistance, inductance and the DC voltage, but at a certain point the current is limited to maybe 5.5 Amps or 8 Amps by the ignition module. You have a two part curve and once you reach the current limiting by the module, increasing dwell won't get help you store any more energy in the coil. Thanks for this video. 44 minutes is long, but a lot of practical information was worth watching the whole thing.

    How does dwell time affect a CDI box? I have a feeling long as the signal is there that's all that matters but if you have a general CDI box like an msd6al is it worth it to run fixed dwell or can you very it and get better results for things like start up.

    are the coils the only component that can fail ? Is the ecu in danger of overheating if dwell is incorrect. Wiring too? I have an 04 miata in batch ign. All this is important for me. Been worried about upgrading the ign for this reason .

    Please tell me: "HOW MUCH CURRENT IS REQUIRED TO PULL THE TRIGGER PULSE TO GROUND" I have been searching for the answer to this for a long time. I assume the pulse is just brought from 12v to GND.

    Is there a way to know you have added too much dwell before you smoke the coils? Or is it just go for broke?😂

      There's a formula based on the trigger teeth and the percentage you want the coil to work at. Id have to find it.

      Sorry, you are incorrect. Majority of 2 terminal coils have secondary internally connected to igniton (+ve) terminal as shown in diagram. There are some exceptions, but this is how Bosch do it for example.

      @alexjenner1108 Рік тому

      copper has a positive temperature coefficient, so if anything, heating your coil has a detrimental effect. You might not measure the difference on the dyno, but increasing coil resistance generally isn't considered a good thing. also your ECU or ignition module is probably doing some current limiting to help protect your coil, so that gets hot too. Being stranded by the side the road or track will not win races or impress your friends.

    Bigger gap will increase power...it's proven. Adding Dwell will help with a larger gapped spark plug...NA.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101 Рік тому

      Until it doesn't, and bigger than what? Just saying a bigger gap is better implies you should just make it as big as physically possible, which wouldn't make more power at all to be fair - Taz.

  • @richardcaldwell6159
    @richardcaldwell6159 3 роки тому

    Ah, a different definition for "dwell time". Dwell is the period near TDC where the piston is nearly stationary. It is adjusted by changing the rod to stroke ratio and the amount of piston offset.
    I realized quite early in my quest to solve internal combustion that spark ignition engines simply can't achieve acceptable levels of efficiency. And yes, I was successful. Even figured out how to build an engine with two combustion cylinders that provides smoother power than a straight six.

    Ok, so UA-cam video making tip.... I saw the title of this video, it is the same as the question I had, then I looked down in the corner of the thumbnail and saw it was 44 minutes long. I'm not going to take 44 minutes to get this question answered. I did not watch this video because of that. Yes, I only came on here to make this comment. Geeezuz, I could explain calculus in less time.
