- Ravaged Star: Armies Of The Veil-Touched, a new line of physical miniatures from Mini Wargaming and Lazy Squire Games. Dave from Mini Wargaming sent me this great miniature and I instantly wanted to give it a grim and dark paint job. As inspiration I dwelled into images from one of the most famous medieval painters - Hieronymus Bosch.

Honestly, this video saved me from myself..
ive been having a few mental health issues and painting mini's has been a bit of a challenge, co-ordination and motivation have been lacking...
This inspired me so much, i really cant put it into words how i feel right now..
Thanks my friend.
To anyone reading this...Have a wonderful day people, take care of each other and if youre having problems talk to someone x
Richard, I appreciate you sharing this with me. I’m humbled and glad that these videos can be of inspiration. I hope you keep fighting to stay on top of things. All the best /Alex
I definitely know the feeling too well, I've never painted or played as little as last 2-3 years as a result, hope you are doing well yourself soon as possible :)
@@clawhammr666 : thanks for the support, after a sketchy day it was nice to read this.. it is very appreciated. hope youre doing well too? take care :)
@@52Miniatures : thanks for the reply, made me smile inside. much love for the effort you put in the vids and channel....and glad to know there are more Willow fans out there too :) take care

In high school, I took art history as one of the many courses offered. I was mesmerized by how well painters from so long ago honed their skills and how accurate their work actually was. I really like the work of Bosch (and him being one, as a fellow Dutchman, I can tell you it's pronounced like either 'boss' or 'bosh'), it has this really creepy, surreal feel to it and it's awesome to see someone painting miniatures actually inspired by paintings made 600 years ago. I think it fits the source material very, very well. Awesome work!
Thanks for the insight Michael. The inspiration just fit so well, also the style of Heironymus paintings translate rather well. A lot of distinct colours and “simple” colour compositions.
Love that color scheme. It's almost like the classical masters knew what they were doing or something.
Right!? It’s like master was properly used… not like todays “epic” for example 😂
Your humor always cracks me up but "I don't know what, in French" really got me. Love the vid as always!
This time wet blending/feathering explained really well. Added bonus of DIY tips for the house 😁
Great to hear, thanks John!
Your videos are just mesmerizing. Your narration and painting are in a class of their own.
Thanks as always Cory!
I have to agree, when I first saw the renders I thought it was another over the top chaos army. But looking at this one and now the project in detail - they look really good.
Yeah, I agree. The “cultists” especially catch my eye…
...my brain was having a hard time choosing between listening to your storytelling and watching your pigment pushing... worth a rewatch...
Thanks Neil :) Please do!
Good lord, this banner's texture is flawless. I'm in awe.
Amazing vid as always. I made a lot of progress watching your videos, for inspiration and mentality when it comes to painting. Will watch you forever for sure!
Well thank you A! I appreciate it greatly
teal and orange - Final looks great. That faded green with the blue looks better than I expected.
Kinda! It is a good combo :)
"so in an instant the size of this faction grew" Happy accidents. Nice save!
I'm glad I could save that one, yes :)
Absolutely beautiful mini and colors - thanks for listing them in the description!
My pleasure Matt, and thanks!
It looks sooo good. Thank you for your time that you used to explain this process!!
The #91 gives it a excellent touch 👏 thank you for sharing your skills
Thank you J! I appreciate it.
Another quality video, and mini. Thanks for continuing to make excellent YT content and inspiration!
Thanks Brian, I appreciate it.
this is quality content right here - please make more of these, Sir!
Thanks L! Working on it :)
Lovely mini, fabulous painting guide but that bureau *chefs kiss*
Thanks Rob!
oh my...again you tick the boxes like a madmen. Bosch ? Really ? Awesome choice. My Parents have these large format books of his work with fold out altar pictures and such. LOVED it as a kid..do still. great video again Alex !
Thanks Dr. F, I appreciate it!
Simply wowed by this model. Beautiful work.
Thanks Robert!
I really enjoy your videos. Funny thing is I do paint miniatures. Haven’t in decades! Watching you paint and listening to your narrative is a pleasure. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing your next video.
I appreciate it Ryan, thank you. Hopefully one day I can get you to paint a mini again :)
Love your work and your way of teaching. Thank you so much.
Thank you Glenn
I love painting videos like this. Doesnt matter the skill. I´m very interested in the kind of choices and brainwork behind the the paintjob :)
Thank you Hendrik, I’m glad to hear it.
This has to be one of my favorites. Kudos to you for the great inspiration and execution.
Thank you Fede, I’m glad to hear it!
what a fantastic result, beautiful use of colours
The 9 to 91 change made me laugh :)
Glad to hear it T! Thank you 🙏
Willow is one of the greatest movies ever made.
Right!? Hope you’re well Jaani
Beautiful work. I love the inspiration for this piece. Bosch was a genius and using that as a grim dark basis is very clever.
Thank you! I mean, the horrors in some of those images 😬
This is a great video Alex - really like the effect you came up with - will deffo check out the Kickstarter (because I obviously need more minis!)
Thanks! There always seems to be room somewhere right? :)
Funny to see how the venerable John Blanche took Bosch as an inspiration and here we are, 40 years later, with Bosch again. The man was the grimdark OG.
Is that a fact?! Does not surprise me. As you say.. OG Grim Dark :)
@@52Miniatures it was reported in one of those "how it all started"/anniversary white dwarf editorials, in an Interview of Blanche. After all, the man got an arts degree.
@@MrZauberelefant Nice! Thanks Mr.Z
Really awesome video, as far as people painting little people go on UA-cam you're definitely up there with the best!
Thanks Ben! Painting little people 😂 I need to put that on my business card
Damn fine painting! I have so much to paint up already but these look like a...hell of a lot of fun to paint up with details for days! I might get some.
Thanks Max, I appreciate it
I got to spend a weekend in s-hertogenbosch a few years ago and it was wonderful. I was surrounded by Hieronymus' work - in canals, in cheese wheels, and especially in the Hieronymus Bosch center. I was in Vught (which is right next to s-hertogenbosch) for work for a week, and was supposed to head to Amsterdam for the weekend but when i found out where I actually was, i stayed and am the happier and richer for it.
Sounds very cool! Quite the pilgrimage:)
@@52Miniatures It was quite the pilgramige from the east coast of the US.
@@chrisstabile3243 Indeed!
I love what you did with that banner. It really does look like a canvas material instead of plastic. Great inspiration source too. Fantastic video.
Thank you Carl, I appreciate it.
She is looking very stunning
Thank you Sierra!
Bosch is one of my all time favorite artists - the more you look at his work the darker it gets. And the better it gets. And the more amazing it gets. But enough about that, these figures look amazing and using Bosch as the inspiration was a genius idea, and the results are fantastic so far! I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the figures
Thank you S! I had a very inspiring moment there with Bosch :)
Looks great and I love your inspiration for the dark grim 😀
Thanks Jason. Yeah, great Grim Dark inspiration
You have achieved a very painterly effect which can be so tricky at this small scale. Definitely 'after' Bosch - 'darkly beautiful'
the subtle grey scale is an interesting innovation, the 'bog-standard' zenithal is almost too coarse for this quality.
Thank you Keith. It was an experiment and I like the outcome. Using the grey meant I could go heavy on the zenithal spray, getting nice coverage and less splatter and the drybrush lifted the raised areas in a way zenithal priming does not.
That 'wet dry brushing' is frequently called 'over brushing' I believe. Nice chill vid, really enjoyed :)
Well there you go! Thanks. Of course there would be a proper term lurking around :)
Ooh, that's a nice Snufkin mug.
The figures look very cool, and the paint job makes them pop.
"I don't know what... in French." 😂
😂 The mug is nice :) keeps me in a happy coffee smelling place.
Extrme good and interesting Paintjob.
I love having some new stuff into the hobby. And here many different techniques were used to get an excellent product.
Love it.
Thanks S!
Kitchen wall doing...ok...not veil touched...yet. Love the look of these minis as well as your paint job!!
Glad to hear it, probably best off leaving the tiles stuck there… :)
In all seriousness, I got a good sized tile to use for oil paints that had a small chip in the corner and they gave me 75% off. Can’t beat that.
@@brianv769 There you go!
gorgeous work!
(particularly with the cloth bits.)
Thanks D! I appreciate it.
Damn, well done with that paint job, grimdark but colorful!
Well thanks K!
Beautiful job translating the inspiration painting to the miniature
Thank you Audrey 🙏
Awesome paint job. Omg, the miniature looks amazing
It’s pretty rad :) Thanks M 👍
Beautiful paint job! Love the banner.
Thanks Frost!
Your videos are an excellent example of mindfulness and being present in the moment, thank you for that reminder! Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you W, I do appreciate it.
This looks like a 'well caressed' miniature! Really love the weathered banner, and you make it look so easily done! :)
Thanks B! It felt like the banner kind of painted itself. I now want more banners in my life :)
I was hoping someone would get to show off painting these, but never thought it would be you. Your narration and explanations are always top notch, but seeing you go art history on these and very detailed in your painting is much appreciated.
Also yes, hooray female warrior minis in power armor; beyond GWs sisters (mostly), there are so few that look like warriors that are female compared to females who technically have enough stuff to be considered warriors.
Yeah, I’m very glad Dave made a mixed force like this. And glad to hear you liked the paint job, I appreciate it.
@@52Miniatures your paint job is inspiring =]
@@Evershifting Thanks Oleg!
My Veil Touched miniatures just arrived and I can't wait to try your painting style on them. Thank you once again for the special inspiration I got from this video. I can't wait to see what comes out when I try to bring these really impressive miniatures to life with my colors.
I hope you enjoy painting them T!
Absolutely fantastic, I am so glad you received these as I really wanted to see your interpretation of the models and you went above and beyond.
Thank you Anthony and glad to hear it.
I love the vibe of your minis. Kind of grim, but subtle. Thin lines, and lively colors, that together look very cohesive, detailed (near lace) and not as lively at all. Great effect. I like the thought of the only piece of fabric in hell is a latrine roof... For me, the standard looks like an old football jersey, that belonged to some ogre or a even a giant. Thanks for the entertaining video. Cheers.
Thanks Marcin, I appreciate it :)
Love your content my friend. Your relaxed presentation style, with a hint of humour is always worth waiting for. Never been bored with your 'tutorials' , full of great new ideas (or maybe great old ones)
you have come a very long way since the start. Thank you and happy gaming.
I appreciate it Keith, and gladdens me :)
Very nice video, as always. Cool model and a great result, too. Great start to 2022
Thanks 🙏 Here’s to 2022!
Awesome work! Love the way you narrate as you go. It adds a story to each mini. Also these Veil-Touched that Dave has created are awesome.
Thanks Shawn! And yeah, I like them. The “cultists” look rather cool
I've watched several videos now of this range of minis being painted. Your video is one of the best. From your reasoning of aesthetic, to end result. I love how this banner came out and I'll absolutely be using some of those ideas for my own worn fabrics in future.
Thank you S, that means a lot to me.
That banner should totally have a "52" on it!
Hah, yeah, I was thinking of going there, but I didn't :)
Something I did not expect to see, but a welcome bit of classical inspiration combined with some very cool minis. Fantastic work once again. Cheers!
Well thanks H! It was fun to just try to “copy” choice of colours and tones from art like this.
Veil touched hmm ok.. Hieronymus, yup i am all in, great video Alex, as always
Thank you 🙏 I appreciate it as always.
Wow - amazing paint job. I would say best this year but that does a major disservice to you given it's only January 😀
Folk are going to have to go a long long way to top this.
Well thanks Andrew! I’m including myself on that list 😅
Holy cow, this is fantastic! Well done indeed, that man!
awesome tutorial! the banner numerals going from 9 to 91 made me laugh.
Thanks B!
Great stuff friend loving your journey 👏👍
Thanks Mark!
When I die, can you do my eulogy?
“And then he zenithal primed” I’ll do my best to not perish before you then 😬
That was genuinely very informative and a really useful guide. Thanks for the video
Glad to hear it, thank you 🙏
Tamiya flat white for zenithal highlights, my dude.
It gives the best finish of any white, no spidering, super fine atomization, exemplary coverage.
There's no going back once you make the switch.
Thanks for the tip. The point here was to use a gray, but I’ll keep it in mind for regular zenthal :)
This is the first video I've ever watched from you and I have to say it's absolutely amazing. Subscribed and looking forward to exploring your work.
Well thank you E! Welcome and I appreciate it.
Your video style is quite unique & refreshing within the mini-space. I mean that in a good way. Really appreciate the time & detail you put into each video. Great job on both the video, as well as the mini. For a newer painter like myself, the narrative you provide helps immensely.
I’m real glad to hear this Jordan, thank you 🙏
A very approachable process. Fantastic inspiration, and some neat techniques I hadn't considered before (in particular, the way you did the metals).
Glad to hear it S, thank you 🙏
Another amazing video and paint job. Your videos are always a highlight of my day. Thank you.
I’m very glad to hear that Sean, thank you.
Surely the best one you've painted so far. Bravo!
Well thank you Massimo!
4:36 this madman starts painting with Greek yogurt.
That smooth creamy texture...
Bosch is undoubtedly one of my favorite classical renaissance painters; his hellscapes inspiring so much thought and discussion between my fiance and I. She'll be thrilled to watch this video as she wades into the waters of mini painting herself.
There is a lot to discuss in the paintings, that’s for sure! I’ve found Keith Richards in there at least twice… 😂 I hope your wife enjoys the video.
Lmfao
Another masterpiece, thank you for your work, I am in awe .
Well thanks Stuart!
Great video as always dude 👍🏻
Thanks Ger!
Love your humor!!! And using Bosch's art as a color inspiration - absolutely golden
Thanks a bunch Stefan
The banner turned out nicely!
I was happy to see that grow in front of me. It feels like it kind of painted itself… 😅
The change from 9 to 91 was a big brain moment. 😂
Hah! Once a year that happens.
Great mini, great painting. Alpharius is proud.
Glad to hear it. Thanks R
Really loved this! Fantastic work!
Glad to hear it , thanks E 🙏
Absolutely amazing work Alex ^^
I've been waiting for this series to release as they all look amazing.
Also getting serious Alpha Legion vibes from your paint scheme. I love it. Now just need to come up with a scheme myself. Hmm.
Thank you Aleria! I really like the look of the “cultists” too. Hope to see some of your work with them :)
@@52Miniatures Thanks Alex ^^ I'll have to place my order and we'll see when I get them. But I'll be sure to share some pictures on the Discord when possible! Till then, there's a lot of elves to finish painting.

absolutely fantastic video . loved it.
Thanks Z! I appreciate it.
Imagine these minis in Emperor's Children colors. Absolutely perfect. I mean I like how You painted this one (blue is my favourite color), but when I see something what looks like female chaos space marine, I cannot hel but think about Emperor's Children.
I'll be honest and say I don't know what the Emperor's Children look like, but I'm sure your right :)
@@52Miniatures Oh, sorry. Chaos Space Marines from Warhammer 40.000. Originaly they were in purple armords but after joining forces of chaos they changed colors to black and pink nad swore loyalty to Slaanesh, god of pleasure and excess.
@@hieronimzmora4153 nice! :)
Wondeful work! I laughed so much with your mistake in the numerals, but very good quick thinking there! :D
The end result is amazing! Can't wait to pick up my brush once my new workstation is in place! ^^
Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Valdo! Yeah, I’m glad that whole numeral thing was salvageable 😂
Beautiful. In a creepy sort of way. I like it.
Creepy is good!
Love this grim dark but colourful!
Thanks Sophie :) it’s been one of my things with grim dark… that it’s just a bit to monochrome at times. Still experimenting with getting more colour full versions :)
@@52Miniatures I feel the same with grim dark it looks good but very samey but that pop of colour really makes a huge difference
Your skills are outstanding.
Well thank you, I appreciate it truly.
Lol yeah, no one talks about the scarcity of toilet paper in hell. Glad you pointed that one out, can't believe I missed that the first time. Gave me a good laugh.
Fantastic and inspirational once again!
I appreciate it R!
Spectacular, love it.
Thank you GG!
Seeing these painted give me way more hope than the renders
Aye, some minis look busy, but this one at least got calmed down by paint :)
Love seeing Bosch as inspiration here as he's one of my big ones! Really trying to pull more influence from more classic art lately and this is a perfect example of why, great work!
Thanks A, it was fun to just openly take inspiration, without necessarily doing a deep dive. And a good change from looking at minis on Instagram… 😅
@@52Miniatures absolutely, I really love looking through art books for ideas as the wall of minis on social media all kind of blends together after a while :P
An army of these seem like they be called the daughters of tzeench
I love this video, its so cool to see someone take explicit inspiration from a specific gernre/artist... As an art history student I really enjoy these refrence points and I think there is a lot of inspiration to take from these kinds of paintings!
Thank you Mika. There is definitely inspiration to be had. Mine was very instant and not very deep. But just taking in anything “non mini related” and then take away what sticks - is great and rather simple. A simple “that looks cool” can go a long way.
@@52Miniatures totally agree 😄
If you like Bosch, you may find Richard Dadd equally interesting. Excellent work as always - a true inspiration in your own right - cheers!
I'll have to have a look! Thanks F!
Fabulous job!
