As always THANK YOU for watching, In every video I answer every one of your dog training questions so don't forget to leave your dog training questions in the comments below!
This is a Lab puppy named Tobey that has come for dog training due to severe food aggression at home, he has even bitten a couple people. He's a Sweet boy with a ton of potential and his family are at a loss with trying to stop food aggression. Please share this video with anyone who needs help with food aggression
It's important to understand the foundation and stem of why this behavior even exists. Thomas breaks down why the aggression is occurring which is from the lack of impulse control and leadership. When Tobey sees anything he wants we lunges, grabs and given the opportunity he would run away with it. So we broke it down in different exercises how to manage the behavior. We certainly aren't trying to teach the dog he cannot have food, we are teaching him when he does have food the leave it command means he has to then stop what he's doing and back off.
SO with all that being said, we teach the leave it command and the place command to manage the situation. This is NOT the only way to teach a dog leave it, however in this case, when kids are involved, Thomas tries to manage the situation NOW! We hope you like it and you walk away with some new information!

I just got into a huge confrontation with my dog over food. She's nearly 2 and I've noticed her dominance tenancies getting worse over the last 6 months, until this morning when the shit hit the fan. It was scary. I've decided enough is enough and I'm going to get her right. This video is a great start, thank you.

“Discipline will win with dogs every time” that is extremely helpful. I often forget that a dogs mind does not work like a humans mind and that there needs to be a teacher at all times, not just a buddy or a fellow pack member who is possibly a threat in the dogs primal mind.

Not to mention it’s been proven that “alpha status” isn’t real in wolf packs to begin with
The leaders are mom and dad
So “proving your the alpha” is basically just scaring your dog into submission

Crystal, if you can start teaching your dog to leave it or go to a spot, when the kids have food, that may help. It is a process for sure. One of my clients has a 2 year old, and the pug was constantly trying to get her food that was in her hand or when she was at the table. So we trained him to "go to his spot" and leave it while the little one was walking around. Remember, leave it can be introduced and then be generalized for anything. Anyway, hope that helps.

It's amazing how dogs can learn and understand the meaning behind different words and commands. Of course, I've always trained my dachshund using both words and hand/body signs. I find my dog is very attentive to hand signs more than words, but when you combine both, they'll learn to do the specific behavior to both the hand signs and the word.

My dog just turned 6 months a couple days ago. We’ve have been putting our hands in his food and doing food aggression training with him since we got him at 7.5 weeks. I didn’t put my hand in his bowl for the last 2 weeks and today when I went to do it , he barked at my hand. Didn’t growl or go to grab it. I guess the training never stops, ever.

You don't "train" food aggression by constantly disturbing the dog when it eats, actually that may be a great way to create it! What Tom is showing here is what you may have to to do with a problem that is already there. But the absolutely easiest way to prevent it from ever becoming an issue is to just not bother the dog when it's eating, that way you are sending a strong a clear message that hey buddy, I'm not interested in your food. And so you don't create that tension.
As for the bark, it sounds more like frustration or play, rather than any aggression!

My 5 year old 60lb hound mix is food and toy aggressive. We got/rescued her when she was 6ish weeks old and from the beginning was food and toy aggressive.Since pretty much the beginning when we noticed her behavior we decided to feed them(our other dogs and cats) separately(shes feed outside and they're inside). She sometimes lunges when they're at the water bowl but not often.I think she has done that like 4 or 5 times. She knows basic commands like sit,stay,paw/shake,and wait. She maybe doesn't listen to those commands maybe 1/5th of the time which is definitely progress but still not the best. She isn't food or toy aggressive with humans. She isn't a fan of younger kids but also hasn't hurt any.She bit me once when she was 4ish months but I was in her face so that was my mistake and fault. She also isn't a huge fan of cats but she's not like some who like go into kill mode and she does this weird thing where she isn't biting them but more like stomping on them. She has attacked our other dogs more so the female(both spayed). She has maybe gotten the male 2 or 3 times but it was because of food.We try not to let any contact of food happen when she is in with the other dogs like not even treats. She will snap at you if you try to pick her up but I think it's out of fear. When it comes to toys no other animal can go near her toys. And sometimes when they cats play with their toys she goes after them but when they stop she stops and also she sometimes the stomping thing.None of out other animals are food or toy aggressive so idk what I am doing wrong Please anyone who is reading this please leave some advice if you have any. Also when I feed her we/i do the where you have her sit then wait when you put the food down and then wait until you give permission to eat and she does perfect with treats not so much but I think that's enough of a background on her so like I said any professional advice is welcomed.j

I have an extreme resource guarder. We were going to the wrong trainers for too long, and a behaviorist. They told us to always let him communicate, if he growls, we should back off and let him have his way. Letting him have his way and not disciplining the dog has lead to the dog using aggression to get what he wants in all situations. He rules the house with his teeth. Counter conditioning does not help when the dog already learned hundreds of times that aggression will ALWAYS work. I wish I had found our new trainer sooner, he is taking this dog on for board and train knowing exactly how dangerous he will be.
It started with the resource guarding. He would growl and bark to keep us away from valued items and we listened, always. We did cute little counter conditioning sessions with lots of treats, but they never helped. He then began utilizing aggression during minor conflicts, such as someone getting too close when he is resting, leash corrections, asking him to go outside in the rain/snow. Again, he growled and barked.. and we listened. It is what our trainers were telling us to do, while continuing to counter condition him slowly to things he does not like. Eventually, anytime we did something he doesn't like, he would just use aggression to stop it. He lunged at my partners face and then his neck because my partner looked at him too long while he was resting on the floor. My partner looked at him for less than two seconds. Dog didn't growl, bark, try avoidance, just locked up and then went for the bite.
Our trainer is doing a hard reset on the dog to teach him aggression does not work, and he doesn't get to make the rules. He is going to get us over the dangerous part, the biting, and then we will be dealing with enforcing new boundaries at home ourselves. We have failed to do so for so long, because we did not want to get bit by an 80lb dog. We also need to learn to let go of the fear we harbor around our dog. He reminds me so much of you (Tom davis), I just wish we had found him sooner. Our training could have looked more like this, instead of the incredibly difficult process we must now go through to undo what positive only trainers have created. I was such a fan of positive based training, but our new trainer made the progress we made in 6 months with counter conditioning, in just a few minutes using both positive reinforcement AND positive punishment.

I have a resource guarding situation that is a little different. We took in a 6 yr old fixed female Aussie because her owner, 60 yr old female, suddenly passed away. She was an only pet. We have had her about 4 months now. We also have another Aussie and after 7 weeks they now get along. I used to store the dog and cat food bags in the laundry room between the fridge and freezer. She started to run in there if she thought I was going into the laundry and put her head and shoulders in the gap where the food was. If I got too close she would raise her lips and growl at me. One time I tried to get her out and she bit my hand. I moved the bags into my bathroom where my office is. It worked for a while but she is smart and figured out the bags were in the bathroom. Now if she thinks I am going into my office she will run in there first and sit in front of the bathroom door and guard it. She will not let me into the bathroom. If my son or husband come into the office she will cower down and let them in the bathroom. It is only me she does that too. It is as if she is trying to be dominant over me. I would really like to show her I am her owner and break her of this.

I've trained dogs for a long time and I think the bull terrier/pit mix are very smart then what most ppl think and that's why I love training them the most, but to me Dalmatians and chihuahuas are the most stubborn I've come across.

I see semi-recent comments on this video so if anyone has any advice or input that’d be sweet.
I’m the first person in my immediate family to own a pitbull so none of my relatives can really offer experienced advice or opinions on his mannerisms. I grew up with purebred boxers. I was unemployed when I got him so I devoted an ungodly amount of time to training. Probably 4 hours a day for the first 6-8 months of his life. He’s not human-aggressive, he is friendly enough with calm dogs & dogs his size but he has struggled with smaller, loud dogs like Yorkie’s and Chihuahuas. He really does not do well with the aggression. He has never lunged or bit over food, but since he was a puppy he has been insanely protective over his food bowl. We have hand fed him & had no issues, he’ll gently pull food from our mouths if we offer it (it’s a trick we taught, he never approached when we’re eating if I don’t give permission) but the minute we leave him alone with the bowl and then re-approach, there’s growling, lips up, eyes bugging out. He’s a year and 4 months. I’ve stuck my hands in his mouth when he’s done that to show him there’s no fear or anxiety, I’ve tried taking the bowl and re-introducing it, I’ve tried taking it permanently for that feeding session, I’ve tried feeding him his breakfast out of a treat bag and training with it as opposed to just letting him eat it, all of that works fine, but the minute he is left alone he reverts back. Nothing sticks. A vet would tell you he is slightly overweight but he looks extremely healthy so he’s not wanting for food. I’m honestly just confused at this point. He has such an amazing temperament in any and every other situation. I know it’s gotta be on me and not him. He’s very vocal similar to a Rottweiler where he “talks” a lot. You can tell the obvious difference between growling when he’s happy and his tail is wagging verses his lips flaring up and ears going back. I love him to death. What did I do wrong?

My dog is aggressive towards other dogs when it comes to her food and water bowls and I think the problem is my open feeding that I do but I thought it wouldn’t be a problem because she was really cool with it in the beginning. She knows leave it, and she knows the go ahead command for feeding but she resource guards and I have no idea what to do. I might switch to a scheduled feeding time and work harder on “leave it” and “go ahead”

Hi Tom, this seems to be your only food/resource aggression video i can find.. a friend is fostering a 6 month old pitbull cross (maybe part ridgeback?) and he gets very aggressive with their other pitbull puppy around food, when the food bowl comes out, with hooves, etc. They have a brand new baby of 10 weeks and are worried about the baby's safety.. for instance when she starts crawling and if has food in her hand or nearby on the floor, or if she is on the floor too near the food bowls at dinner time. The dog is young and otherwise lovely and gets along with their other dogs, but would it be a life long worry for them even with training? At the moment they don't feel its worth the risk, but feel terrible about giving the dog back to the shelter. I can totally understand their feelings and they also don't necessarily have the time to commit to this puppy to get him on the right track. BUT, do you think that with some persistence, it could be possible to train this out of him completely? I've shared this video with my friend (i've followed you for a long time), but I'm hoping that maybe you might be able to make a new short video addressing such a situation. I'm worried that this puppy is going to have a very difficult time finding a forever home with this issue. I hope you see this message on this old video! Thanks!!! ~ Carolyn

The 3 year old has never been an aggressive dog he’s protective of the yard by barking but never been aggressive towards other animals or people. The last 3 months he’s started being protective of food towards the other dog. They had just a normal feeder that they always had access too and now I have to completely separate and feed them. If you love your dog keep up with training even when you want to give up because it is repetitive. This is a cautionary tale but one that anyone of us ignorant of the behavior of different dog breeds need to learn so we can properly train and break a bad habit and if you let that one go more will follow. We had a puppy that was insanely aggressive about food and developed aggressive behavior about everything else because we never broke him of that habit. My parents would wear a heavy leather glove when putting food down. We didn't know he came from a puppy mill and his bad behavior came from that. He was a big but beautiful dog and as the only girl child he protected me from everything. I was the only one in the family he never snapped at or nipped. We were told he was a husky collie mix and as a puppy he was aggressive but not too bad except about his food. Without understanding that he needed more than normal training he became more and more aggressive and based on what I know now and his amazing strength in his neck and shoulders he had some pit bull mix in there or another strong breed and probably would have been happier and less aggressive if we'd kept him mentally stimulated and given him a purpose but in those days a dog was a dog and In those days we used choke collars which I abhor.
One day he was chained up in the garage because the weather was pouring rain and my Mom wasn't going to take him out to his 30 foot long run that would turn into a mud pit and he'd need a bath. My Dad had built him an insulated dog house so if he was out there already he had a warm and dry spot. We played with him all the time and he got great exercise but he was always on the edge of anger. The guy who reads our water meter started to enter the garage through the people door and Rover went insane, barking like crazy and pulling at his chain. Our meter guy moved forward thinking that Rover was contained. Rover tightened his neck muscles and despite the choke collar dragged the 300 pound saw forward until the meter guy saw Rover getting closer and ran out and shut the door behind him. Rover was so determined to guard and he would have attacked that man and my Dad measured the distance that he dragged that saw and it was 15 feet. My Dad was shocked at how strong he was but what we didn't understand 50 hears ago is that he needed mental as well as physical stimulation so he developed bad behaviors. Then he broke his run and attacked a woman who was pushing a baby carriage and it took all my Mother's strength to drag him off as she hit him with a small metal shovel that we used to collect his poop to bury.
He went to the pound the next day and I heard my parents say that they probably put him down. I cried but I didn't know what I know now and I couldn't blame my parents because he was dangerous and too strong for my Mother to control when he was in a rage. I found him 10 years later guarding a car impound lot and I talked to the owner. He let me near Rover to talk to him but no closer and was shocked when Rover whined and he let me extend a hand and Rover licked it. He said I'll be damned and I spent some time with Rover and I saw that he was happy and well fed. He had all this land protected by a chain link fence to guard and the owner told me Rover would show him his trophies like a shoe, a piece of fabric, or a jacket but he never bit anyone hard or he'd have heard from the police. Rover just loved the chase. He had a nice warm dog house and the owner said he was the best guard dog he'd ever had and Rover showed he was content by leaning against the owner's leg. The owner gave us some space and I scratched his favorite spot and his owner said yep that's his sweet spot and I could see he didn't need me, he'd found, by a strange accident of fate, the one place where he could be himself and although I cried as I walked away I looked back and he looked at me and I could see he was happy to have me visit but I was his past. Then his owner said ready for dinner he turned away to more important matters.

So when I get home Its rush hour pretty much until I get too sleep. I'm gonna take him to the pound in a week or so. I give up it's been 3 long months and he burned me tf out. Oh how I love him I just don't have the skills time or knowledge for this behavior and have a long history of k9 attacks in my family I mean severe attacks. ND I don't want him harming anyone I love or I'd put him down because for me it's unforgivable. It just hurts because I brought him for 700 and I did it for emotional support but instead I'm angry almost all day from telling him NO! Stop no bite I mean the redirected method is a waste of time at this point. I'm trying and he makes progress so fast but then another problem arises. Oh also Im in between job changes, this position is very demanding and needs longer hours😩 well I tried

Hunter Lannon of course it works, because you’re making your dog fear you. If every time you made a mistake at work your boss slapped your face, I’m sure you’d try harder to not make mistakes. It is just unkind to do it that way. If a 3 year old baby wets himself, we don’t spank them. We give them the tools to do better next time, and we reinforce good habits with positive feedback. It works the same with puppies and dogs of all ages. It has been proven scientifically that positive reinforcement gets better results than negative corrections. This applies for both dogs and children. When you know better, you do better. Dog training has come a really long way since we domesticated dogs, and I hope we all seek to improve our training methods instead of relying on what’s worked well enough in the past.

    • @petraclinger47

Me, luckily we are smarter than dogs and we don’t have to rely on biting and barking to convey what we want. Humans have taken wild dogs out of their natural place and domesticated them. We have changed the course of their evolution dramatically. As more intelligent life forms capable of changing the evolution of a species, we are also capable of studying kind ways to train animals, and I encourage everyone to try it. Also, he is using treats to train as well as corrections. So clearly negative enforcement/corrections don’t work all on their own. However, positive training methods do work without the use of any physical corrections.

So today I gave food to Togo(my 9 months old dog). After few minutes once he started to eat,. I noticed his bowel wasn't locked into the kennel.
I told Togo sit of course he's into his food, didn't sit just chumping along. I went to lock in the bowel he growled n did a little bark at me, I said no Togo and took the food bowel away. I started over told him to sit wait and OK you can eat again.
What you think? Is he having food aggression. Did I corrected the right way? Should I repeat action by touching his food bowel and see if he growels?

My puppy is 5 months old. Shes a small mix pit heeler. I taught her wait or leave it and it's her best command. When we do puppy play dates with her old litter mate and other dogs, she growls at the other dogs. It seems like she gets frustrated that they are messing up her chance of getting the food. She's obsessed with food. She always has to work for it. I do feeding sessions to train her, but now I have her wait and say go to eat the bowl. Last night she had a bone while we were over my sisters. She was resource guarding, since they're just pups and known each other their whole lives, I held the bone and let them chew it both at once, they did really good and eventually started playing and chewing together on their own. Is that a good approach? What should I do

my puppy is ok about his regular treats or food, but when it comes to a bone or something he finds on his own on a walk or around the house when we aren”t by him, that’s when the aggression starts. he knows leave it, but if he finds something on his own he drops everything and goes for the food. he then starts growling and showing his teeth. he even bites if you get to close. the only person who can actually take the bone or treat out of is mouth is my dad (although he still growls). we have inhibited a new command called drop it, when we tell him firmly drop it, and quickly run to get something better like a piece of ham. but, we still get these signs of aggression if he finds something in a walk and we have nothing to give him in return. we don’t know now what to do in this situation.. I think its because I used to feed her before she would "work" but once I saw that she was acting out of lack of exercise I now don't feed her until she has and now she is very territorial with food. She is ok with me, my husband and my son (9years old) near her food or taking her food bowl but anytime my toddler (2) is around or any other children, she begins a deep growl and once bit my daughter for picking up a snack she had dropped.( Its more like a leave me alone bite not a I want to eat your arm lol) She does know leave it well and to go to her place, but sometimes it just happens so fast that sometimes I'm not there in time to redirect her. My husky has food aggresion and at the house & car (because maybe theres food there) she gets very protective and territorial and at my grandmas house she looses her shit. It is not a dominance thing in the sense she just wants to give a nip or pin the other dog it is attack I can see it in her eyes even though she hasnt she would I know her. People said use treats as positive reinforcement for this she only has food agression sometimes always at the house never with people not with her best friend mr kitty or birds its just canines like foxes dogs etc. It started IMMEDIATLY not over time one day at the dog park in the fenced in area she had always been submissive when attacked and she had been attacked badly prior to this but these two young men had two pitbulls one muzzled one very friendly dog and the dog went after a ball with her then started attacking her. She was on the ground welping as I rushed over to her and the owners only called for him to come back his name was jackson. I got over to her and yanked him off and he bit my coat tore it up a little and iris wanted to kill him went right for his throat she had started to get behind me until he bit me then she lost it. When we got home Mr Kitty was eating and she nudged him out of the food bowl with a nip. SHe does this rarely but he doesnt care and still eats with her she does nothing. She attacks our shitzu over food and he used to attack her and she wouldnt care now if he growls at her she gives him looks and they both dont back down. THen I was runover like a year later very badly with her there. She gets slightly nervous around cars now especially the same make and model and if an ambulance or fire truck makes a sound she will cry howl and get on me or stand on my feet and get very nervous it makes me so sad. She does not liek to cross at white cross walks now either and gets a bit protective. At the house after I was runover is when the territorial stuff started prior to that only food agression on ocasion with male dogs and mainly pitbulls that looked like jackson. Ive tried 2 trainers but they used the same methods and she made no progress they also couldnt tell what she was going to do and how she felt she shes only very communitive with her eyes her body language canbe misleading & my one trainer mistook her tail being up with her doing better which was not true... I made progress with my neighbours pitbull husky unfixed male until now he was allowed to come onto the law after she nipped him not hard at all very soft nose nips and allowed to play and now she loves him coming over. Bones are still an issue he was chewing it and she was not going to attack or steal it but she wanted to you could tell it makes me nervous which in turn does not help. He can have treats and shes fine with it but a few days ago someone dumped a bunch of tennis balls where they like to run and Iris got tennis ball aggresive thats why I cant let her in the fenced in areas of the dog park tennis balls not in fenced in areas are usually fine she wont care but where she got attacked and other tennis ball(not tennis balls on tenis courts) she gets very aggresive for no reason he did not want the ball he had one and he didnt care how do I stop her from attacking over pocession? And in the car now tgoo because on my way to the dentist from the hospital she was with me and would not stop guarding the car her friends can come to the car and she looses her shit maybe because we have fed her in their too. Other cars shes good. Ive tried what thge traioners said giving her food when dogs come to the house or givbing both dogs food and just holding her or making her watch other dogs eat and she has to just allow it and shes ok with some dogs especially female and relaxes but if she knew she was free not being held by leash or if I wasnt sitting next to her to hug her if she tried to leap shed go for it. Same with dead animals off leash I cant trust her with male dogs as shell get the food run away with it and eat it and attack if they try to steal it. At the park i put her in the fenced in area sometimes shes great off leash outside of it no aggresion but inside with her good buddys and one is a pitbull shelikes allot who can eat with her no aggresion but he wouldnt stop trying to steal her ball and I did not want to take it as if I take it and hes too close to her shell nip but not with him yet I didnt want to chance it so she hid under a bench and he tried to pull her out by her foot ansd she lost her shit nipped him but came hiding behind me which was new. Hes not usually alpha but I dont see why she doesnt care with him and how to make her not care with most dogs

He will growl at them and act crazy. You have a terrible relationship with your dog if he's resource guarding you.
You need to watch some of the videos this guy has on fearful aggression.
Then get a trainer to help.
Purely positive training is great for teaching a behavior, but the dog has to have consequences after the behavior is taught.
As far as teaching the leave it command goes, dogs don't care how much they get, as long as they get something.
And then this guy has a very good video on resource aggression.
It's not magic, it's just that you haven't been taught how dogs communicate and your dog is frustrated with you for it.

What we do, is crate our Lab when it’s our breakfast/dinner time, she actually loves her crate. If I was you, I would make sure the cats and dog don’t have free roam and free to just come to your dinner table whenever they want while you’re eating. If crating isn’t an option, put them in separate rooms.
That’s a big no no in our house, like I said, our dog LOVES her crate and doesn’t mind hanging out in it, whatsoever.
That’s because we started doing it when she was 10 weeks old, fed her breakfast and dinner in her crate for months. Now, I can just point to her crate, and she beelines her way right inside, and lays down. Dogs naturally love “den like” areas, it’s what they do.

My puppy is fine with treats and his regular dog food. But when it comes to bones he gets very food aggressive, and for absolutely no reason. We'll just be walking by him and he'll start growling and biting. He's gotten better by letting us pet him while he has a bone. But if we do it for too long he'll start getting hostile and attack. I will say though he gave me his bone, which I'm not sure if it's a sign of trust but he won't do it with anyone else. He is still very aggressive and I don't know how to stop it. Please help, he's only 1.

That's the opposite of what you want.
You say leave it, then if they drop it but still growl you say leave it again, and if they continue to growl you use corrections. No bad behavior allowed.

Your dog is paying attention to you. You should be grateful for that. If your dog is staring back at you and doing nothing else, it's because your dog doesn't understand what you are asking. Dogs cannot generalise so you have to generalise a behaviour which means teaching that particular behaviour in lots of diffrent situations and lots of different places. If your dog isn't understanding what you are asking, you haven't taught the behaviour well enough. Also
are you rewarding your dog for performing a behaviour? Would you go to work and not get paid? Same for a dog.

@@petraclinger47 Victoria is pretty good, but she has also had dogs put down, because her methods did not work. Every dog is different, sometimes a physical reminder ( stern, not abusive), is needed.
In a perfect world, owners would train "leave it" from day 1. We dont, puppies are too cute:P Sowe end up having to correct a behaviour that developed because of us. In a dog family, mom will first give a warning ( leave it command), and only if that does not work, she will become increasingly physical intul the pup gets it.
After we messed up, we now have a food /toy aggresive dog on our hands, and may need to add some oomph to the "leave it" command. It is not cruel, and it may save someone from getting bitten, or even the dogs life.

Again, positive reinforcement can assist in conditioning a dog. You can also utilize other strategies. Collar pops and prongs are archaic. Perhaps they are necessary for the most extreme of situations. I have been training a number of years and my colleagues have had to undo the damage of trainers who use practices such as collar pops and specifically choke collars. Just saying.

Petra Clinger Remember too that dogs are not people. Wolves and other canines in the wild punish each other with nips and bites, growls, etc to know their place. Also, this is a heck of a lot better than the dog having to be put down because of biting. Remember it has bitten twice already and this woman hasn’t given up on the dog. She is trying to find some answer that works, and even a shock collar is better than death. And it’s not just her choice either. There are laws, medical bills, and insurance companies and law suits to deal with. The owner has an obligation to the animals they take in as well as their families. And this man is not excessive or abusive in his reprimands. I’ve seen people treat their kids worse in the store.

I'd say, you pulled too hard on the dogs collar with that correction and your yelling at the dog 😅. The pull should be equivalent to the escalation of the behavior. You don't have to give those harsh corrections unless the dog was trying to bite or such. Plus I don't like that your tone is very harsh when this dog was actually a very gentle dog. Don't raise voice, just be firm with a lower tone. Otherwise, you just sound like an angry frustrated person correcting such a gentle dog.
