WITHOUT YOU (HOW COULD I'VE COME SO FAR?)
    Verse 1
Standing at centre stage, taking a bow,
who would have thought I’d be unafraid now?
Do you remember my wavering start,
    trembling fingers and quivering heart?
    Verse 2
Walking that lonely road, not knowing why,
chasing another’s dream, living a lie.
You were the mirror into my soul,
wisdom and courage, more precious than gold.
    Chorus
Without you, how could I’ve come so far?
Without you, how could I’ve learnt to fly?
Now I am soaring, bravely exploring,
dancing on rainbows, painting the sky.
Yes, I am flying, keeping my dreams alive,
and I just want to say,
thank you for showing the way.
Oh, I just want to say,
    I wouldn’t be what I am today,
    without you.
    Verse 3
Once I had fought against all kinds of ties,
wanting my liberty, ignoring the signs.
Unending freedom has its own price,
rooted in you I have scaled the heights.
    Verse 4
Standing at centre stage, taking a bow,
your tears are all I see, somewhere in the crowd.
Words left unsaid, they don’t matter now,
this moment’s wonder I share with you now.
    2nd Chorus
Without you, how could I’ve come so far?
Without you, how could I’ve learnt to fly?
Now I am soaring, bravely exploring,
dancing on rainbows, painting the sky.
Yes, I am flying, keeping my dreams alive,
and I just want to say,
thank you for showing the way.
Oh, I just want to say,
    I wouldn’t be what I am today -
    Bridge
And though I’m not always by your side,
you know my heart will never be far away.
Every smile etched within my mind,
I will carry this love, I will carry this love.
    Final Chorus
Without you, how could I’ve come so far?
Without you, how could I’ve learnt to fly?
Now I am soaring, bravely exploring,
dancing on rainbows, painting the sky.
Yes, I am flying, keeping my dreams alive,
and I just want to say,
thank you for showing the way.
Oh, I just want to say,
    I wouldn’t be what I am today,
    without you, without you.

This song taught me a lesson about God’s plans. It was written in 2002, for a proposed school CD project for one of the IJ schools. The project was shelved, I was disappointed, and the song lay quiet but not forgotten for 11 years. In 2013, Mrs Karen Jalleh, a teacher at CHIJ Katong Convent (Secondary) asked me if we had a song they could use at short notice for their anniversary celebrations. I offered this song. They had many student and alumnae singers lined up so they wanted an extra verse. I was preoccupied with other tasks and doubtful if I could easily extend what I considered an already complete song. Yet by God’s grace, I wrote 2 more verses and a bridge and was humbly surprised to see the richness of the finished work that God had intended. It was always meant to be an IJ song, only God’s time-frame was a bit longer than we had imagined!
