- MIT class of 2026 Maker Portfolio video. I wanted to share two projects I've worked on in the past few years. Enjoy!
Here's a link to the 3D model of my quadruped robot. All files (for Fusion 360) should be downloadable: a360.co/3pghbAG
this is a really impressive maker portfolio. You can really see he is very passionate with what he's doing
This is really cool man. As a current lead member of a very small FRC team it is awesome to see how some members of the community are progressing once they graduate high school. (Note about me: I’ve been doing FRC since I was in 8th grade in 2019, currently spending countless hours working on our 2023 robot)
Thats sick man
Hope i get to do this stuff some day
I am enrolled in undergrad in electrical engineering
The Boston dynamics mini robot really impressed me. If you don't get into MIT, which I'm sure you will, you'll thrive at any school.
Thanks thanks! I’ll remember this comment if I actually get in haha
@@yifeiyang4079 hope you do buddy
U got in? @@yifeiyang4079
@@yifeiyang4079 did you?
WOW! This is absolutely amazing! Still in my Sophomore year, but its amazing seeing things like this, I hope to one day apply to MIT, but anyways best of luck on your application!
Thanks for the support! We might just see each other on campus one day who knows :)
@@yifeiyang4079 haha yeah one day maybe, still a looooong way for me to even get close to where I want to be, but hey it'll all be worth it in the end :D
Check out NASA internships for high schoolers
same.
So this is what it takes to get into MIT
Well done dude

😎
This has been my favourite maker video so far, the fact that you talked about your failures as well as the successes. That's what I liked about it.
Guys take notes -
The key point of everything is "mentor" and "leads". Don't feel sad watching this.
We simply didn't have any guidance or didn't even know these exists. But look forward from today and make the best out of the time left in your life.
That’s amazing! Heading over to the shop for robotics right now and that just gave me so much motivation. gl with your application!
Thanks thanks, robotics gang #1 haha
Damn I wish we had something even remotely close to a robotics club in highschool.
Great work!
Applying to Georgia Tech this fall with engineering in mind. Hope you get into MIT. You greatly deserve it.
Do you know whats funnier, before this video youtube recommended me a maker portfolio of a dude that made a fully functioning electric car in his garage. No academic prestiges, no nothing. Just a guy with Intellect and Sheer Will.
Amazing! If you're not working for Boston Dynamics by now I'd be surprised. Keep up the good work. Happy to have people like you in the world!
Wow - very impressive Yifei. Can't wait to see you in MIT
Great work! its amazing and inspiring what you have accomplished at such young age! Doesn't matter if you didnt get in for undergrad, theres always a masters and phd or waiting for you at mit, dont give up!
These portfolios are absolutely insane...
That's really cool! Best of luck to your admission into MIT and your future as well.
The quadruped looks really clean and professional! I wish you the best
damn. im only like 30 minutes in to the 4 hour python for beginners tutorial. i need to get started on that again
It's amazing, best wishes with your future 👏🏻
Thank you 🤞😄
I randomly got recommend this, just wanna say great editing (the captions really helped support the audio) and good luck with the application!
Thanks! Love the feedback
Impressive!! Making your parents proud haaaiyaa❤❤
Nice! I love your FIRST robot, very different from mine, VEX, but really cool, hope you get in! I applied too and made a maker portfolio too and I really like yours! I really want to do the spot dog one, am very interested in seeing ur designs and ur process!
Yessir! I remember watching your portfolio while editing mine, it's pretty cool stuff! I added a link in the video description if you want to look at the 3D model files for the robot. Good luck to you too!
Your quadruped is really cool. I hope you get into MIT!
Yessir 😤 thanks a lot haha
Hey man, your job looks amazing ! Could you please let us look at your paper for the inverse kinematics parts ? I am super interested by this method and I would to see how you managed to implement it for your robot. Congrats and good luck for the things to come !
Well done Yeifei.
Did bro get accepted ????
(Nov 20th, 2023)
Really cool projects! All the best! :D
Thanks a lot, good luck to you too! 🤞
I'm so in awe of you, teach me how you make your hair look that good 😍😍😍
Hey Yifei, I'm currently on an FTC team looking to join an FRC team, are there any pointers you can give us for your team's design procedure abd how your odometry worked? I wish you all the best with MIT.
Hi!
Well we usually don’t start prototyping right away. We think it’s be to figure out optimal strategies and simulate gameplay so as to not waste time and resources on inefficient ideas (it’s mostly because we have limited resources). Then we split the team in three: programming, mechanical design, and piloting (which is important, a lot of teams underestimate the importance of a good pilot). We have a leader for each “subteam” and work together from there.
But then again, depending on your team’s situation, what worked for us may not work for you guys.
Either way, good luck and I hope you’ll have fun with FRC 😌
@@yifeiyang4079 Thank you so much!
This is awesome Yifei. Actually inspirational. What are you studying at MIT?
I signed up for mechanical engineering, and thanks for the support haha
@@yifeiyang4079 haha mad props! I've been thinking about using MIT's online courses and "completing" a self study degree in engineeringhaven't figured out which one yet. Thought EE was the way to go, but maybe I'll follow in your footsteps. Any other resources you might suggest? With an end goal of becoming knowledge like yourself and being able to complete a project like this.
@@Andrew-ss5vb Engineering fields overlap quite a lot, so you’ll be fine either way. I learned most of the stuff online (UA-cam, stack overflow, even Reddit). Honestly, you can probably learn just about anything on UA-cam nowadays. And projects like mine might seem daunting at first, but it’s honestly not all that difficult once you get started. Best of lucks with your projects :p
Wow. Pure talent
Damn this is super impressive
Thank u 😁
Best of luck! :D
Thanks a lot!
Bro GREAT JOB!! Very impressive :) Hope to see you there!
Applying as well? Or already a student haha 😌
@@yifeiyang4079 I was admitted early action in December. Your projects are pretty cool! Really hoping you get in too, you certainly seem to deserve it from what I've seen in the video. :))
@@matiasvergara5069 ohhh that’s awesome 😎 I’m applying from Canada so we’ll see how it goes 😌 and thanks for pepping me up haha 😤😤
My boy over here flexing for the judges.
Gotta do what you gotta do 😤
@@yifeiyang4079 Did you ever get the dog working?
I showed my neighbor this and now he wants you to build him a love robot.
For some reason your video got recommended for me but you just have 156 subscribers and I’m the 157th one!
Hope to see you progress bro!
Good luck 🍀👍🏼
Thanks! Much appreciated
So, did u get in?
Where do all these applicants get the time and resources to do all this shit?? It's over for me (in 3 years time when I'd be applying xD)
very true, I'm in college and this guy has accomplished x1000 more than I have and I'm not exaggerating at all.
Amazing
very cool, you can code and also build nice mechanical parts!

This is awesome!
What Motivates You?
Dude nice!!
Hoping for more video's!!
Good luck !!
@yifeiyang4079 what material/resources did you use to learn inverse kinematics specifically to implement to your quadruped?
Funny how we all forget the word passion after university applications and default to making money or doing useful things for some.

Hi, cool video. Could you share the document you used to understand the kinematics for the robot?

broo thats incredible, may i ask which major are you choosing? cuz ive been thinking wanting to join something like mechanical, electrical engineering or even robotics
Computer or mechatronics, haven’t decided yet
@@yifeiyang4079 oh yeah, i forgot about mechatronics, i also wanted to choose like that, best of luck for you bro ;)
Could you please share the document on inverse kinematics that you showed?
It’s a paper I wrote for school, unfortunately it’s in French so I’m not sure if it’s useful

Hello, I'm currently in grade 11. I've seen quite a few maker portfolios and am confused when do you guys submit them. I've seen portfolios for class of 2028 being submitted in 2024. How's that possible. They must be submitting it in their 8th grade or so right?
When do we actually need to submit them. Any deadline?
Class of 2028 means they would graduate 2028
@@ymellow. makes sense now. thanks
so are u in MIT now
Can we learn in mit with scholarships, well how much does it cost and who gets scholarships. Can you help me with this and i am not US resident a student from asia.
I’m not an expert, so I’ll tell you what I know. Otherwise, you can find all the information on MIT’s website.
MIT is need blind towards ALL applicants, and they say on their website that they’ll provide need based scholarships for all admitted students. I’m not sure how exactly they calculate the amount of money they give out, but it should theoretically be enough so that any admitted student can attend.
Again, make sure you do your own research and fill out all the forms on time if you plan on applying.
And good luck 🤞
Nearly 600 views or yours whoooo!!! Still love your projects :) There’s so many editing things I love about your vid and wish I implemented in mine. How’s it going?
Pretty good, I hope you’re doing good as well 😌 any new projects on your side?
@@yifeiyang4079 yeah, I've started working on a rc like motorized wooden cart for my vex team, been using FIRST motors believe it or not. Also we have a vex comp on the 29th. I'll tell you how it goes 🙂
@@arcknightmc7486 ohh that’s cool😎 FRC season started as well so it’s about to get busy hahaha
Nice also editing wise I wish I added captions, talked more about my other non vex projects (tho I ended up choosing vex due to the 2 min timeline) and I wish I didn’t film the monologue in One Take…
Btw what did you think of mine? Out of curiosity?
What laptop do use and what specs
My laptop is a Dell XPS 2-in-1 (13 inch) with an i7 and 32Gb RAM
Pretty cool
Cool one bruh, i hope i have such fund to this too

Are you from canada? why not waterloo?
Yep, I’m from Canada 🇨🇦. And yeah, I did apply to Waterloo as well haha

I’m not familiar with your program/college requirements. You should probably ask a counselor or a professional in the matter.
did you get in?
Unfortunately no :(
@@yifeiyang4079 oh. I also didn't get in:(
I'm sorry yifei
Hey bro, which engineering course did you sign up for? Really curious.
Mechanical, but if I’m not wrong, you don’t actually declare your major when you apply to MIT.
@@yifeiyang4079 Hahaha I see, thanks for sharing mate. Please delete the comment if it's not okay.
@@yifeiyang4079 Btw, i like both aspects of mechanical and electrical- i like designing like you said, but i couldnt care less about how engine works- at the same time I love computers, programming electronics, etc. Could you guide me somehow? Which majors to pick and how? What's the strategy I should use haha - watched some videos on the topic but still not sure. I want to do what u showed on the video, it's awesome. Coolio.
I m thinking about diving into electrical first, become a master at what I want and then dive into mechanical in my own time if necessary. Would love to hear your thoughts too. ;)
P. S. I've heard of mechatronics but it's pretty niche so don't want to do it yet.
@@introvideo5064 Well in that case I think that mechatronics engineering might be what you’re looking for. Otherwise computer engineering also merges software with hardware. But honestly, I think that a lot of engineering fields overlap so don’t stress out too much with choosing a specific major, you’ll have plenty of time to figure out what exactly you want to do, so as long as you pick a general field of engineering that you’re interested in, you should be fine :p
sorry,You can give me the documentation physic(1:39).THANKS
let me reach you somehow
I got rejected too ;-)
haha you can find me on Insta, the link should be in the "about" section of my channel :p
when you have money and arent alone...
That's 2020, not 2019... Great video and good luck though!
Yeah you’re right, I probably had it confused with the school year :/
I got rejected 😭
The same here
hey how do you learn to code raspberry pi I also have one but i use other code and modified it as my project is their is any thing like book to learn Raspberry pi.
There’s usually a lot of resources online, but you have to understand that a raspberry isn’t exactly a microcontroller, so think of it like your computer. It can run linux and so you’ll need to learn how to use the terminal
@@yifeiyang4079 Thanks
hey.. what are you studying in MIT now? and did u write any paper for your last project (any lang ok)..
I am going to college the very next year in 2023 ....Thinking of apply in MIT .....
I have a good score every year but i never participated in Olympiads ..
So just want to ask if it is necessary to have a gold in international olympiad to be a MIT student ???
Please reply .....
Most (almost all) at MIT aren’t math olympiad champions, so don’t sweat it. With that said, if you’re an international applicant, you will need a very strong profile since it’s a lot more competitive. That also means having backups plans because MIT isn’t easy to get into, even if you were a math olympiad medalist.
What are you planning to study at MIT?
I’m actually studying Mechatronics at UWaterloo :)

Are you accepted for the class? Brother.
Would you consider releasing the documentation you created for the robot?
I haven’t documented much, I’ll see if I can gather some of the notes I’ve taken along the way

This is terrible. Such films show that most people and countries are at the preschool level. Will it be fair to blame Chernobyl ??? I'm probably not going to read the book. And the sculpture was not so pessimistic I would say that there are great projects on the film. I wonder how many years this someone from the film is ???? I greet the author of the recording.

Nah, it’s cool that he dedicated his time to a project. The cringe part is you trying to put someone in a bad mood when they achieved something that probably took a decent amount of effort.
@@johnglaucus4556 you're right
