    How to use an ink converter or fountain pen converter is an excellent question! LAMY produces LAMY Safari and LAMY Al Star pens, which are super popular LAMY fountain pens - but they also produce the z27 and z28 converters - which allow us to use bottled ink.
    Ink converters, also known as fountain pen converters, allow us to use almost any ink in our fountain pen - no just the branded ink cartridges that LAMY provide for us!
    That's right, it's really easy to use any other ink.
    This is not just cheaper, it's also better for the environment.
    There is, of course, a catch - you must make sure the ink you want to use is fountain pen safe - we'll discuss this and give a common example of an ink to avoid in this video.

    Just watched your video. Very clear and concise and I appreciate that so much. I followed your instruction #2 with filling the converter via nib and it works like a charm! Placed a paper towel under the workspace to keep it tidy. I had bought the Lamy Obsidian Permanent Ink to draw my botanicals and urban sketching. This ink is SUPER BLACK and so beautiful on paper. Thank you for this wonderful and helpful video.

    Hi Toby. There is also a way to fill the converter with a medical syringe with a needle. It is slightly cleaner, more economical and without air bubbles. Thank you

    I prefer filling my Lamy converters with an ink syringe. Much cleaner and less waste of ink. The feed is saturated most of the time anyway since I try to avoid running my pens dry. And with 20 Lamy Safari and a couple of Kaweco's, I've enough pens with a wide array of colours to choose from.

    Hi Toby, and thanks again for a really clear explanation of this topic. My local art store here in Footscray, Victoria, recommended a bottle of Sumi Ink 60 to use in my fountain pen. I was looking for a waterproof ink. This one is described as "very smooth flowing sumi ink for Manga drawing". I am wondering if it's maybe designed for a quill-pen and likely to clog my nib when it dries. Many thanks! Tony

      I'm not 100% certain but the Sumi Inks I know are not suitable for fountain pens. There are, however, manga fountain pens so some must be... Sorry not the clearest answer!!

    Hi Toby. I want to buy a Lamy pen, the converter and some inks, and this video answered my questions and was so helpful. Thank you for posting! One question please...have you had any issues with your pen cartridges on airplanes? I was wondering with cabin pressure if there was anything I should be concerned about when traveling with fountain pens. Thanks again!

      Glad it was helpful!
      I've not had any problems on airplanes, it's an interesting question though. I have taken them several times without problems :)

    Thanks a lot for your explanation, Toby. I’ve recently discovered your YT channel and I find it so interesting and helpful! One question: if I had less fountain pens than different colors of ink, could I buy multiple converters and have them ready any time, full with ink or would the ink dry? Thanks a lot for your expertise.

      Welcome aboard! unfortunately not really - the ink in the ink flow itself would take quite a while to get out, and the ink converters will leak if they're not in a pen (or empty)

    Excellent explanation. Do you have a preferred nib size ef, f or m. 👌

    I just bought an ink converter for my Lamy safari, and I can't get it to fill up at all! Tried both methods, using a new calligraphy nib and also my original medium nib. I've dipped that nib almost all the way to the bottom of the ink jar, so I now it is fully submerged. Do you have any advice? I'm getting frustrated 🙁

    • @TobySketchLoose
      @TobySketchLoose  Рік тому +1

      An alternative option is to get an ink syringe and fill it up indirectly.
      When in your fountain pen, does the ink cartridge seem to leak at all? If so, it's probably got a damaged seal and just needs replacing :/

    • @loesdevries152
      @loesdevries152 Рік тому +2

      @@TobySketchLoose thanks for the advice! And no it doesn't leak at all. Also, I have a complete new pen (minus the casing) for the calligraphy nib, so that one should be okay right? Anyways, maybe it's best to go back to the store, perhaps I am doing something wrong and they can show me how to do it right. And otherwise they can sell me the syringe. I think I might prefer that method, I've used so much ink already and it's so messy 😅

      @TobySketchLoose  Рік тому

      @@loesdevries152 I can't see why the pen would be a problem - as you say, the shop should be able to show you if you're not doing it right. Otherwise help you with a syringe :D

      No, you have to get specialist waterproof inks (check my supplies link for more)

      I usually pull some in, maybe half way, then while still down in the ink of course, push that ink out, then slowly fill it up. Seems like air bubbles sometimes make it difficult. Occasionally I'll have to do the half way up then back down bit a couple times, not sure what makes the difference. But hopefully that will help. The going slow was something I had to... who am I kidding, still have to😬😊... work on. But it makes a big difference. Then you should be able to see the ink pulling up nicely. Slow n steady wins the race. I feel like that's almost part of what I like about fountain pens... I'm not super adept at them like these artists, not at all, but, the process of choosing the ink, cleaning your pens, filling them and changing colors, being more careful with them then just a super cheap bic pen(which I also love 😊) . And getting to use the waterproof ink and a Fude nib....ugh, so good :)
      Sorry... I carry on too much 😊
      Hope you're having lots of fun with it :)

    Hello Toby ! I have a lamy safari f and I am looking for a black waterproof ink. I also watched your video were you review a few inks but I still have a question. Are all of them compatible with my lamy safari? I would like to buy the Sketchink for example. And how often do I have to clean my fountain pen. Thanks in advance!
    best
