Appalachian Morning (1990)

Track 1 off the new FSU Percussion Ensemble recording, "The Percustary Insectarium" (2019), composed by Paul Halley and arranged by Omar Carmenates. Mechanical license obtained through Pelagos/Harry Fox Agency and Paul Halley, original recording may be heard on "Earth: Voices of a Planet" by the Paul Winter Consort.
I clearly remember hearing the Crossmen play this in the early 90s, and immediately became obsessed with the Paul Winter Consort (and especially Paul Wertico, who was with the Pat Metheny Group at the time and would eventually become one of my teachers in graduate school). There’s so much joy in this tune, and I often thought I would try to arrange it one day-but why should I do it when people like Omar Carmenates are available? He really outdid himself, and I am so proud of the students. There’s no click track-in fact we recorded just the keyboards with no click, all live, then overdubbed Ryan Raines on drum set and Nick Stevens on percussion as they played along to the keyboard-only track.-JP
