A Song of Ice and Fire: Demons

  • In ancient Greece, demon's were thought of in two ways. The word demon could be used to refer to an inner attendant or an inspiring force, the famous philosopher Socrates said that he lived his life in accordance with the internal dictates of his own quote “demon”.
In Socrates’ view demons were more akin to what we would refer to as the soul. The other view of demons in ancient times was that they were beings somewhere in between humans and gods. These Demons were not necessarily considered to be malevolent in the ancient greek view. Demons were thought to be benign, similar in nature to the gods and humans, so wildly varied. They were nature spirits, forces of nature, spirit guides. The rising prominence of Christianity would change the way demons were thought of considerably.

Yeah D&D really dropped the ball on Arya... I dont think "badass ninja" is what GRRM is going for, I think it's more like an extremely troubled child who's been put through hell getting led down a darker and darker path who might be a psychopath.

My personal idea of her character arc is it's about her personal identity, and her only way out of her path is to come to terms on what that means.

Just wait till you read it for about the third time. This is not a joke, and it likely won't happen soon. But after your 3rd, 4th+ readthrough, over the course of years of life and lessons, each chapter will unfold into an entirely new book. If you enjoy it, you'll enjoy it more as you read it again every other year or so, through your life.

Also, what do you think when people say "demons" live in Mantharis? Do you think they are just people that are so wicked that the rest of the world considers them as demons? And what about the demons that live along the river Ash and Stygai? Are those wicked people too, a force of nature like the others and the children, some kind of unknown monster or creature, or maybe something else?

This was a very good video. Specially i liked your observation that not a single character had it perfect. Just like real life. Everyone is beaten by Life in the Story as well. Even Petyr Baelish who is playing so well the Game of Thrones had it served a bad deal in his Beginning... End is still unknown... But the guy is having the most fun as of now. But, the humiliation he must have experienced... The Breaking of his World View , Trust, at a tender age...

Hey Quinn, wanted to clarify demons in Christian Theology (specifically East Catholic/Orthodox). In these theologies, a demon is just a form without matter (or just a soul) that uses thought (logissmoi) to assail the faithful with negative thoughts, emotions, etc... Check out the Ikon "The Ladder of Divine Ascent". It sort of captures all these aspects you mentioned.

Outwardly, getting his face shoved into a brazier is explanation enough for The Hound's fear of fire. Just so, I've always wondered if The Hound heard a voice in the flames (like Varys) and inwardly, that's what truly haunts him. His "demon", if you would. There's a quote from The Hound, I can't recall it specifically, where he tells someone that they don't know how hot hell really is. That aroused my suspicions about something more having happened during Gregor's attack. I was hoping the show would've addressed this after The Hound accurately interpreted a fire vision, like maybe a multifaceted scene where we see The Hound reading the flames from Thoros and Beric's perspective where they hear the flames crackling, then from The Hound's perspective where the hissing flames is actually a voice speaking to him, to be followed later w/a confession to Thoros about hearing the flames speak as a child, but no😪.

Josephine Winter The closest you might get is an updated translation of the 1001 Arabian nights. It’s unfortunate because there’s a lot in Islamic mythology stories about the prophet, Most of them are in hadith [stories about the prophet and his companions]. In countries like India, Pakistan, Morocco, Iran, Turkey, etc. there are countless folklore stories of local Sufi Saints like Al Khadiir ( The Green Man). Fortunately all of it is still largely untranslated.

Maybe he doesnt want to get into sample chapters (the forsaken) cause of spoilers. I also immediately thought of Euron though.

As always, you provide TRULY EXCELLENT content on, and pertinent to ASOIF; I especially love that you provide the complete etymology and cultural contexts for the term "demon"...
[[ I wish we(( contemporary civilization ))could somehow truly revive the archaic interpretation/usage of the term...or at least honestly reintroduce and reincorporate the premise, whilst substituting "demon" with... _?? _*_pnévma_*_ (( πνεύμα ))??...??or _*_plásma_*_ ((πλάσμα))??_

    Another great video!
Just a point about the Lhazareen and Dothraki and how they might view sleeping with demons. When the witches originally danced and slept with demons they were originally based on nature spirits (specifically of the gods Pan/Dionysus/Bacchus) and this is where the classic form of Satan comes from and this changed a witch from a woman closely related to nature and therefore frightening in their power but linked to nature, under Christianity this changed to someone who appealed to a 'false god' and therefore someone to be persecuted. Christian theology also disagrees with the use of sex to gain power. Often traditional witches would work in traditional medicine and midwifery (like Mirri Maz Dur) and this could mean the Dothraki fear Mirri's demons not as an evil force as such but as a strong natural one, that can allow an old sheep woman to be on a par with or even more powerful than them
Equally, like the Others and ice, the demons of Valyria may be nature demons of fire. Not malevolent but neutral and still incompatible with life
The humans of ASOIAF may also contain within them demons that are primal natural spirits. The characters either control these demons or let the demons control them. It could be that magic is linked to demons and that the more powerful someone is magically the more demons they invite into them (like traditional witches but in a less sexual, more metaphorical way). This might explain why Bran has to be continually reminded to not spend so much time in Summer, there is a difference between his basic wants: feeling safe, feeling fed (which he can achieve through Summer) and his actual needs: to keep his physical body safe and fed. The more powerful Bran becomes the less he seems to care and the less himself he becomes. This can be seen to a lesser extent in Arya as well. Trading humanity for power

you know, that is certainly something that has left me puzzled about the game of thrones world, (note: i am NOT intending this to be a real world religious debate) but the supernatural aspect about it has very mixed messages, on one hand, when both jon and dundarion come back from the dead, they state they saw nothing, indicating there is no afterlife (which is a smart move on the end of G.R.R.M because a confirmed afterlife would literally take away from EVERY death and render it meaningless, who cares if the starks die if we suddenly learn there is an afterlife? what worry is their of failure if the worst case to happen is that they just die and live on in an afterlife with their friends and family? it keeps the suspense by implanting the idea that maybe when you die there is nothing, however, they truly confirm the existence of magic and the gods, that there IS a higher power at work BUT they sorta confirm that there might be more than just 1, sure the power of the lord of light is undeniable, but the old gods seem to have a presence as well (unless they are all just the same god being misinterpreted as different ones, though given that the lord of light works with fire primarily, and the children used the old gods magic to create ice zombies, it seems clear thats not the case) they also kinda prove the existence of demons when the witch brings drogo back from the dead with her blood magic, so where do these beings exist if there is no afterlife? why would there be another dimension/existence for evil demons but not for humans? if a persons consciousness dies upon death, how is it brought back? (now true, the body being brought back could just restart the consciousness that was already within) but how are there such things as reincarnations? jon was thought to be the reincarnation of an ancient hero, so was stannis, and if any part of that is true, that would imply that the soul of that person would have to be brought back and placed into a new body (thats kinda what reincarnation is) but if the soul is stuck to the body and dies with body how can it be brought back? (maybe a god could defy this? i don't know) could it be possible that perhaps there is some kind of afterlife, and maybe the powers that be just remove the knowledge of it when the person is restored to life? that seems like it would make things easier without tampering with free will....i mean, if i knew there was an afterlife, for sure, i'd be WAAAAAAAY more of a reckless person to an obnoxious level.....couldn't threaten me with SHEIT

It just depends on where you live and what you learned from growing up. In some places they're sand spirit's, whilst other's see them as 8-9 feet tall and have bat wings.

I look forward to the day when we’ll get long form videos discussing the intricacies of The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. By then, we’ll all be elderly and unable to remember our own names. In other words, George Martin seems determined not to finish.
