Approaching 18,000 miles on K1600GTL. The fun is still very alive. Masterpiece of an engine; absolutely. Combined with superb chassis dynamics; unbeatable. People must think I'm crazy. I ride an 800 lb touring bike in ways that have caused sportbikes to back off. Wheelies? Yup. Jack rabbiting from red lights with the front wheel 3 feet off the ground surprises a lot of people. Power, Paco. Power.

Not really. See there are many experienced blue hairs who have been riding for longer than we’ve been alive that are willing to cruise well under the 100 mph + restriction. Those are the targeted prospective buyers.

@@progress426 While I'm not likely to push a touring bike into the +100 mph range, I still resent the limit anyway. For me, 'limits' are antithetical to the 'motorcyclist ethos'.
For that alone, I would choose the GT/L over this. While they too are speed restricted, their restrictions are far more out of reach for me, therefore, for me, they are virtually unrestricted.

I own this bike. Its really great and fun to ride. Keeps up well with my dad and brothers bmw r1200 gs adventure bikes on the road. The speed limiter is for safety. I did research why the limiter is on it. The most sensable answer i came across was the bike started to get the death wobble on that front tire at higher speeds. I tested it and it does start to wobble around 90 mph. Plus why would you want a cruiser bike to go that fast. Crusing is meant to see the world around you in comfort on a bike. So its well within what its for. If you want speed and some comfortability. Go with the r1200. I toured from ohio to top of california. Down california. Accross on highway 44 to tennesee. Then to hilton head s.c. then back to ohio. all in four weeks on a used 2009 bmw r1200. I wish i had this bike for that lol.

@@Talathies1878 It must be something to do with the bags on this bike. I recently had my GTL up to 101 mph and didn't feel the wobble. However, at that speed, if anything runs out into the road and causes you to crash, you will be dead. No way to escape that. I do agree with the reviewer though about highway stability. I was surprised it moved as much as it does on the highway. My Suzuki 650 scooter seems more stable on the highway than the K series bikes.

You can actually can make the bagger like Grand America by adding a top case. I did this by first adding RCU backrest and luggage rack from Sierra BMW by replacing six scres and bolts, then added a 47 litre top case from the Givi to luggage rack. The top case remains absolutly firm and stable. I don't know it is my imagination or not, but the bike even became more stable. There is no top speed limit, and I have done more than 120 mph and had no issue with stability of the bike. Great review.

Because of your wonderful film here, in September 2018 I bought one of the very rare K1600 Grand Americas in Austin Yellow in the UK. I already had a Harley Touring CVO so I was curious to see how they compared. Grand America: amazing 6-cylinder engine - the best on the market by far; the handling and agility are beyond belief and such fun. But fast motorway cruising isn’t: the bike is just too nervous and sensitive to side winds and is subsequently limited to 106mph. The 2 Harley CVOs I’ve had in the last 2 years, by comparison, would trade a cylinder to have some of the dart and the flex of the transverse, heavily-inclined 6. But on a long tour on fast, long curves? No competition: surprisingly the Harleys are rock-solid, no matter Wind nor rain. Much better luggage loading capacity as well. So, in August of this strange year, I sold the K1600 GA. And now I’m already looking at brochures of a 2021 one ... Cheers, Mates!

Nice review. Like the Honda ST1300 which also had a high speed instability that was caused by the Honda euro top case this bike may have the same issue. The case was not sold in the US for this reason but could be imported. I had this case on my ST1300. There were several unexplained high speed accidents in Europe. Honda put vortex generators on the sides of the cases to try to make the air less turbulent behind the bike. I never explored this high speed region because I didn't want to prove this theory as correct. As an aerospace engineer I believe this large top box is the reason for the instability and limiting the speed was a less expensive solution than doing many wind tunnel tests.

@@philiprobinson593 update and sadly, I sold it !!! I loved that bike. BMW lost me for good. After 15k on her, I had too many issues. Ran to the dealer under warranty too many times. Second, reverse clutch is poorly designed. If you don't engage it correctly, more likely you need a tow truck. Third, HWY ride in high speeds when you get a side winds or behind trucks, buses, forget about it. Don't know why, but sometimes is off with the aerodynamics. This is a very complicated V6 engine/bike. Too much can go wrong. Not cheap to repair. I just got myself a new Honda Goldwing DCT Tour. So far, the best bike I have ever owned. Before you get a BMW, ride the GW.

If you go GW route, test the DCT and 6 speeds. Run them both for a nice ride. Dealers do give them out now. DCT is not for everyone. I fell in love with the DCT. No regrets after 30 years of clutching. Note that all bikes are expensive these days, just no mercy! I was lucky enough with the 2020. You are not done there, you will buy more accessories for comfort riding. If you can hold till the 23 comes out, you will have the honor to have some good safety options as standard. Good luck !

My preference as a BMW R1200GSA owner was the BMW, but DEAL BRAKER is the speed limiter due to the instability of this bike...how is it possible, such a MASTER PEACE with this issue...

Decent review of the bike and I agree with the speed limit being a shame with that engine. Seems odd it would be such an issue with the top case when the standard GTL doesn't have that problem. One thing I would have liked to have seen is the size of the top case itself. That is one of the main differences between this bike and the standard K1600B, but you didn't show it to us at all.

Top speed limit was a factor in not getting this bike. I went with the 2018 Honda Goldwing. They also restricted top speed, but I get 112-115 there. Not that I want that speed all the time, but I want a safety factor in passing on the highway. The GW does not seem unstable at that speed. So, I think it was limited for warrantee sake.

FLOB32 not that I have a dog in the fight the difference between 100 and 112 doesn't look big until you need to pass on road with 85mph speed limit. But the question is the limit is due to stability issues.. how it will behave on metal bridges? construction zone gravel?

    • @BFD15i
      @BFD15i 6 років тому +1

Why does it make a difference, when you want to pass with a 85mph speed limit? Both bikes do 85mph..Regarding the stability-question:
The K1600GT(L) doesn't have any issues in terms of topspeed-stability and is "Autobahn-approved". Therefore I can't understand the reason for the limit on the Grand America, since it's more or less the same bike.
And Honda is known for weird decisions like that, I don't question them anymore. Probably they just think that 112mph is enough and that's it.However: Since I live in Germany, I would never buy a bike in that price-category and with that amount of power, that is limited to 100 or 112mph. So both bikes are a no-go for me. The GW would still have a chance, if they wouldn't be so dumb to exclude traction-control for the GL 1800.. Then again: Honda and it's weird decisions.. ;)

    • @cyclopathic998
      @cyclopathic998 6 років тому +1

FLOB32 tires (or tyres) main reason GW is limited to 112. US is main GW market and Honda has to play by rules. With regards to passing 112-85=27, 100-85=15, almost a double. Makes difference when space is tight and passing zone short.
With regards to Germans and BMW: at the Dempster entry gas station we had a German tourist saying to my friend in broken English: "B-M-V goot.. Harley bad!". Silly he had never had to bleed servo pump on RT. Or fight to get forks fixed on GS. BMW has good engineers but it is not like they are infallible and their products tend to be overengineered and not easy to work on.
Now I would really like to understand why they decided to limit this bike to 100mph. Is it for US market? Most of the time it is done either to save money on tire or to reduce liability, if there's an issue with stability or tire speed/load. Maybe they felt that tire can blow at max load and speed 105mph, who knows

    • @BFD15i
      @BFD15i 6 років тому +1

Can't argue with that speed difference for overtaking. However, both is too slow (for me). Aren't there any tires, that can do more than 112 on the GW? This year, 15.000 GW go to USA, only 350 go to Germany. Impossible to get a test ride.. :(BMW may seem a bit overengineered, but I never had a problem on my beamers. On the other hand, I never had a problem with my Harley or Honda, as well.I will discuss the speedlimit-topic with my dealer, next time I'm there. I'm curious, too, why they did the 100mph-limit on that bike. Tires can't be the issue since there are tires with enough load-capacity that are capable to do 160mph and more..

@@flyingdog1498 you, not my friend should try calling me a liar on my face. I live in south Africa, and yes on the bike speedo I have ridden my bagger to an indicated 250kph. It might not be the true speed, but indicated. Have you thought that different markets might have different speed limits? I generally cruise at 200kph all the time. I have videos up on you tube indicating 230kph.
Do you own a bagger? Have you ridden one and if so what is the max speed did you manage to ride?

The Grand America is just a B with a top case (a option that takes hours to take off) I checked but still a nice machine great video top marks :)

    Hi
Me being a long-time proud owner of a Honda Pan European
St 1300. Wanting to try out somting new!
    About the Big BMW 1600K
    (@ the time brand new)
Its a Ego-buster for sure, a head turner.. I realy like the engene and the sound i mekes when revvin-it up, lots and lots of fun tork and power.
It's sure brings a smile on a bikers face to try out such a machine .
Loved riding the world famos US Highway 129 -The Dragon on it and hitting them curbes 🏍
    For me i'm a tall guy -
The hight of the bike is a plus.
The top box is good and big.
It has a lot of gismo's,
    maybe 2much for my taste.
Love em brakes, but the seating and riding posistion is poor for me. My lower back was complaning a lot after few hours rides..
Its posseble that a simple backrest could fix my backache !
What is could not fix is how top heavy the K1600 is at low speed and when moving it a round in general @ 0-speed.
It maid me feel like i was allways
    struggling with it.
    It bug's me !
I could live with but never like it
All and all a fun and good try out
But me... I will stick with my beloved Honda St 1300
    Still best sport tourer
    (For me) 😃👋
    Ride safe and best regards.

Trust me, taking on couple of hundred miles of straight freeway at 100mph only is a pain in the ass. Then you'd wish you had more.
Besides, we all grew out of our nanny years a long time ago. Nobody likes to be told what they can and can't do for their 'safety' because we also know the government doesn't really give a shit about our safety.
If YOU find 100mph sufficient, then don't twist the throttle past 100mph. Simple, isn't it? Why should everybody else be forced to do 100mph just because you find higher speeds "unnecessary, dangerous and stupid"? That seems awfully selfish of you.

Hey Don, the service interval on the valve check (mine NEVER needed adjusting in 59.000 miles) is every 18,000 miles. Oil changes every 6,000. I haven't spent your ridiculous estimate servicing my K1600 in the 59,000 miles I've owned it, and it has been dealer serviced at EVERY service, and each service was done ON schedule. I am in Alabama United States of America, wished this had email line private forum, to communicate with you, just wondering what part of the world are you in and if America, what country is your first country language. I like motor cycles, and electric vehicles, found your page on youtube. I think all motor cycles should have night vision as normal safety standard and LED lights outlineing the motor cycle vehicle box for safety. Here in America, thier is parts their is no lights pich dark then deer hazards happend and Individuals been drinking too much then be setting in the middel of the road in Black Truck with all lights turned off no street lights pitch dark, then woop bam boom, acident happens, and Blacks persons have over run America then be walking around in pitch dark then no intention acident happens since they do not wear reflective illumination safety vest. So to provent acidents from happening the motor cycles and transportation vehilces need night vision. in my option. What do you think?

well, as I stated, I wished this had private communications ablity, if your offended or any one else, Have no clue about what is ones mind, the reason I asked then the individual that mades the video if not their first languaged being english then what country of origin was he from for it might been business opproturnity for us to do business venture for I can only speak and write english, so if he communicated in another country language and was originally from their that country not usoa, then he would have access to the banking systems their thus I am here in usoa and if he was stile their just traveling and have access to that country comming and going then we might have been able to work out business partnership for he is their and I am here, being born their by him he could have access to the government programs their and read their tax code and I have access to some of the programs here being born here in usoa. as I said I was thinking a potential business opproturnity that we both be able to make some money. for I do not know anything about setting a business in the country of origin that he was originationally from. For here in USOA, My family name is signed on the Founding United States founding documents. So if he was their in that country of origin then I am here then he could help setting up business their. since he could communicate in english and might have been born some where else in the world which is business opprotunity for him and I to work out business partnership. to make money.
