Chromexcel Leather Shoe Care | 1000 Mile Boot
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лис 2017
- In our latest video, Kirby Allison, founder of The Hanger Project talks about the proper care of a Wolverine 1000 mile chromexcel boot using the Saphir greasy leather cream. The Saphir greasy leather cream is specifically made to condition and recolor oiled leathers without the use of harsh waxes that sacrifice the natural texture of the boot itself.
Directions. First, clean your shoes using either a damp cloth or Saphir Leather Cleaning Soap. If you have previously applied a waxed polish, remove it using Saphir RenoMat. Allow the leather to dry, then apply a small amount of Greasy Leather Cream onto your fingers or a chamois and massage into the leather using circular motions. Once complete, allow to dry for 10 minutes. No buffing required.

Kirby, IMO, you do a fine job of presenting yourself, I enjoy watching your videos.
Awesome video, Kirby! I've been contemplating getting some of the Wolverine boots or shoes and now I know how to take care of it.
Video made by a man about stuff men like. No fancy music or BS
That's refreshing.
Good stuff, Kirby. I use Neets foot oil on my chrome excel with outstanding results. That said, you have introduced me to the Safir line which is fantastic.
Loving the videos Kirby, always informative and interesting.
Thank you! now I know what to use on my AE Maritime boat shoes!
I would no doubt get this stuff on my jacket, tie, and shirt.
Yes. If I weren't filming videos for UA-cam, I'd do it in a tshirt also! ;)
@@kirbyallison Is Chromexcel just another name for oiled leather or is there a difference? Please help advise me on this as I'm looking into buying my first pair of oiled leather boots. Thank you!
That cream reminds me of the Mr. Leather product in the yellow bottle. You put it on and it moisturizes the leather, has this nice sheen to it and then it dries leaving the leather nice, well cxl.
Love your videos Kirby! They are very thorough and informative, perfect for beginner such as my self. I just picked up pair of Wolverine 1000 mile 1940 (black) and after watching your video I realized that I have boots with different type of leather. Do you mind sharing with me what should I use to care for it?
I have a pair of Thousand Miles. They are delightful. Sure, I scuff and stain the leather, but they are work boots for me, not dress boots. Mine have aged well using nothing for regular maintenance but Venetian Shoe Cream and serious brushing. I could not be more pleased with any pair of boots. I might give the Saphir greasy leather cream a try.
I enjoy all your videos. Best regards from Mississippi.
I have 2 pairs the original in cordovan #8 colourway and the 1940 apron toe in black. Great boots.
Good to see Kirby getting his hands a little dirty and that he actually owns some shoes that are not premium or perfectly polished. 👍
I have two pair of Thursday boots, captains. I have been using your Saphire, and it works well.
What colors do you have I have a winter blue 1000 mile boot will it work
@@hanni7333 I use clear. I like the worn look on my captains.
Thank you for the video. Given this shoe care tutorial I've been curious on how it is in comparison to the Saphir Everest Dubbin. Any plans to do a video on that product at some point?
Thank you K.A. for another great video. Can I use this process on a pair of black A.E.'s Higgins Mill boots with tumbled leather?
I have a brown pair of Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill Boots. I put a surface scratch on one boot, very noticeable. I simply rubbed it with my finger until it blended in. That's one benefit of Chromexcel,
I would suggest wearing nitrile gloves. I had to scrub my hands with orange Go-Jo to get the pigment out. Otherwise, great video. This is exactly the product I needed to bring my 1000 Mile Boots back.
thanks! I luv it!!!
I just purchased two pairs of 2030 service boots from Viberg this week, one in Natural chrome excel and the other in brown chrome. Next on my list is the colour 8 chrome excel 2030 boot
This will do well for both my J.Crew X Allen 405 Indy Boots as well as my Allen Edmonds Maritime Boat shoes. Both are more on the red/burgundy side but I think the medium brown will do well for both.
I have a pair of navy blue Helm Muller boots made out of chromexcel and this same routine does miracles on it. I use neutral
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent!
I have a question...I’ve had a pair of 1000 Mile Boots for 4+ years that I wear 4-5x a week. I’ve been treating them with neatsfoot oil and Obenauf’s LP, along with a leather cream for oil tanned leathers from Wolverine. They have held up really well, but they’re just kind of dull now, and I’m learning it has something to do with the Obenauf’s. Is there anything I can do?
I've had 1000 mile Evans boots for more than a year. I use mink oil based solution to rejuvenate the leather and obenaufs wax to add a little shine. No damage to leather at all but I'll consider getting greasy leather solution from saphir soon.
Yeah! You could also use the Saphir Dubbin (www.hangerproject.com/saphir-dubbin-waterproofing-polish.html) in order to keep them conditioned while maintaining the natural patina.
The Hanger Project I've got greasy leather solution from saphir and I have some important points to share:
1) Never apply it with your bare fingers, it stained mine for 3 days now and skin cracked on tips of my fingers !!
2) the pigment in black is not light at all. It remained as matt finish on my boots and required very Intense buffing with cloth to get back to original appearance,
3) this is indeed great product, it covered all little scuffs and brought my boots after one year to almost original look.
Kamil Bojarczuk Thanks for sharing! Sorry about your fingers!! I’ve never used the black. I can see how it would be a stronger pigment than the brown.
Hi, i have the Allen Edmonds Higgins MIll, I live in Florida in which it rains a lot. Any recommendations on protection? Or will that oil repel enough water?
Hey Kirby, I turn 18 in just 2 weeks. I have a couple questions for you. First, I love your tie in this video! Where can I get the exact one? Very beautiful neck tie. Second, what tie knot do you use in this video? Lastly, what tips do you have for me going into the adult world and what should a young man wear? Thank you, I love your videos.
I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Neumok 2.0 Chromexcel in the grey/silver color. I love them, but any little scuff easily shows as white. Would the neutral color help fill in the scuff or is there a different product I should use?
I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Higgins mill - love them
I have these as well, but isn't that Cordavan leather?
Not Cordovan.
Horween chromexcel.
I recall that they made a limited number in Cordovan, they were about $700.
Very helpful video, thanks! I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill boots that are very reminiscent of the Wolverine. The brown chromexcel leather they use has a lovely reddish tinge; would you recommend the brown or neutral product here?
I'd probably use the brown. It has a similar reddish tinge.
I own that exact pair of Wolverines!
These are great boots!
I own a pair of AE Higgins Mill Natural Chromexcel. Saphir Renovateur has worked well to date. Would you recommend the Greasy Leather Cream as an additional step? Also would the neutral greasy leather cream help with recoloring any scratches in the natural Chromexcel?
I have the AE Higgins Mill Weatherproof Chromexcel in Dark Brown and appreciate knowing how to care for them. Thank you.
I just purchased a pair of boots from Beckett Simonon made from chromexl or what they call pulled leather. They look great. Should I condition them prior to wearing them? These will be used basically a daily wear boot so how often should I condition them?
Thank you.
I just got a pair of tan Allen Edmond Stirling boots which are Horween Dubllin. Anxious to dabble with the sapphire products. This will be the Greasy Leather Cream too? Will the Brown or Black darken up and patina/antique in the same way as calfskin? These will be everyday boots so no goal of a serious shine for me. Thanks!
Own a pair of AE Higgins Mill in chromexcel. What do you recommend for cleaning & treating the edge of the soles?
Great video. Unfortunately most customers and shoe store staff do not know how to take care of oiled/pull-up leather. Was in a store and witnessed the store attendant tell a customer who bought a pair of chromexcel boots to use wax polish.
Excellent and valid point. Sadly, America has a one-size-fits-all approach to shoe care, and it normally includes only a tin of Kiwi shoe polish.
thank you so such professional video. well done. question: I’ve bought timberland Kendrick shoes brown color. I don’t know how to care them. What kind of leather they have and what kind of cream should be used waxy leather cream or oiled leather cream?? Are they made of chromexcel leather? You should know this. Please, help me. Thanks a lot
Kirby, what would you use for actual kudu antelope leather?
Hey Kirby, love the content and site. I put Saphir Pommadier Cream Medium Brown on some chormexcel Alden LHS loafers. Should I remove it and apply the greasy leather cream to the loafers instead? Thank you
Would this be alright for a Chippewa boot from J.Crew? It says leather and nothing about Chromexcel but looks almost identical to the pair in the video. Thanks!
I just got a new pair of Thorogood 1892 Beloit 824 4311. Very light colored leather. Thanks for the info on not using a wax polish on them. I will stick to the neutral Saphir greasy leather cream.
Hello Kirby, thank you for the informative video.
I just purchased my first pair of Chromexcel leather boots. A pair of Alden Tanker Boots. So my question is, I don’t mind darkening the leather, but I don’t want to darken the beautiful stitching. So should I go with the neutral conditioner or will the brown be ok?
Thank you,
Cristian
Good question, and i would also like to really know the answer to this as my shoe is black but has white stitching that would be a bit hard to avoid. How do you folk get around this?
@@christopherdsuza7531 mine are black with white stitch as well. I'm going to stick with neutral because they're Cavalier chromexcel Dr Martens. So they're not meant to be super dressy and they'll age well overtime. A response to your question would have been appreciated though.
I have a pair of Whites custom boots in Chrome Excel and they recommended Lexol or just boot oil. Is the main benefit to the Saphir product that it has some pigment in it?
I have been enjoying your channel. I am not someone of great means, so a lot of the bespoke options are out of range for me, but I enjoy watching that world and the educational information. I am moving from a more manual work job to a professional one ( Chandelier maker to Social worker), and I am learning a lot about style, menswear, and trying to start a wardrobe. Thank you for what you do and keep up the good work.
I have a pair of Brandy Captain coming from Thursday. What should I be using on them? I bought what they recommended, but I wanted to know if there was anything else I should add?
Amazing Video as always Kirby ! I have one question. I just got new pair of Pull up Leather Boots. Is it necessary to shine them with cream and waxed polish and maybe mirror shine on the toe (i got captoe boots) or just using a renovateur ? Thank you
What kind of leather cleaner/shampoo did you say was best for the chromexcel leather?
Which brown, light or dark, best matches the brown 1000 mile boot? Also, how does Saphir compare to the wolverine polish to restore scuffs? And yes, I have 2 pair of 1000 mile boots; brown and black.
I used neatsfoot oil on my wolverine 1000 mile artic boot and it did not change the color at all which I was pleased with but I'm wondering if this is a good product to continue to use.
Do these same recommendations apply to Red Wing "featherstone" leather, which is used in their heritage "Beckman" model?
Great question
Good day sir, when taking care of boots like these would you need to waterproof them as well and if so what would you recommend? Thanks
Waterproofing is really just an optional extra. If you are going to be spending time outside in the rain, then you need to waterproof the leather. I, personally, do not waterproof my dress shoes because I avoid the rain in them. If it is raining, I'll wear one of my casual boots that are all waterproofed.
Just received a brand new pair of 1000 mile boots I unboxed them and I have your “Safir oiled leather” cream. Should I apply it to the boots or wait until they are used and dehydrated? Will it cause them harm to oil them straight from the factory?
Hi. First time boot buyer here, and I just wanted to say I love your videos. I recently bought a pair of brown captain Thursday boots . Quick question: i only have access to Saphir products (the company recommends venetian cream) and I'm looking for a boot care regimen specifically for the brown Captains.
What specific regimen/products from saphir would you recommend? Would I be correct in saying that Saphir pate de luxe for polishing and renovateur creme for conditioning would be needed?
I have the captains in brown as well, the leather is extremely saturated and tough it really doesn't require much care, especially for the first 6 months. I have been using a leather lotion by Moneysworth and Best. Best thing is to keep them clean with a horsehair brush and use shoe trees to help prevent creasing.
I don't know if you'd be able to answer this, but theoretically footwear from this material, would it be feasible to wear in an environment where the boot doesn't necessarily get pounded by water so much as it does get exposed (not just the sole, but parts of the boots) to bodily fluids. I am a nurse and considered purchasing boots from this material, but unsure if it would be a smart idea as I wouldn't want to destroy the boots necessarily or material. Additionally would that material then be ok against a hospital disinfectant wipes of sorts or would the leather soap dinsinfect the boot?
Hi Kirby, quick question…I bought a pair of Wolverine 1000 mile 1940s made with “olive tanned leather” I have no idea what to use to condition them. I can’t find anything online. The leather is super soft, but looks dry.
Hello Kirby, if I buy a new pair of chromexcel leather boots with dainite soles to wear in the snow and rain throughout winter, do you recommend using any products on the boots when I first get them and as I wear them throughout the wet weather?
Is this the correct procedure for Horween Dublin boots as well?
Not to get too far off the subject, do you find that a leather soled boot (as an example below your choice of 1000 mile vs AE Higgins Mill with synthetic sole, such as Dainite or Nitrile) will break in better and/or sooner? I feel that way, what say you? Thanks for a great video!
Mark - I honestly don't have much experience with synthetic soles, especially the Dainites. However, my intuition would say that there is almost no break in period. My chukka boots with crepe soles were comfortable almost immediately. Nothing like a new, leather outsole.
Had some oiled leather shoes resoled and cobbler used wax polish on them. Thought he was doing me a favor but ruined the look. Can I/should I take off the wax polish using Renomat before applying the Greasy Leather Cream?
I've just gotten a jar of Cuir Gras Oiled Leather Neatsfoot oil cream for some oiled leather boots (not Chromexcel). I see you using what appears to be a different product. Is what I've gotten essentially the same? Sorry to ask what might be a stupid question, but I am still sorting out the different Saphir products and their uses.
A class act.
Hi Kirby, what do you suggest for the Allen Edmonds Venture Boots? They are made of Horween waterproof, waxed full grain leather - not Chromexcel. Thanks!
Which product would you recommend for light brown/tan colored chomexcel boots?
I have some Red Wings oiled leather boots that are over 10 years old. Thoughts on using the Saphir Everest Dubbin on them?
Hi Kirby, always enjoying your video's. This one leaves me a little puzzled though. You describe Chromexcel as oiled leather without waxes, hence the use of Saphir's Oiled Leather Cream that's without waxes too. This seems contradictory to what Horween says about their Chromexcel:
"The next step is "hot stuffing" - that is, the impregnation of the hides with oils, waxes, and greases that are solid at room temperature. Stuffing is achieved through the use of steamed mills, and is the process that is responsible for the "pull-up" of this leather. Pull-up is the temporary displacement of these oil and wax blends that cause a lightening of the leather. Our philosophy that you need to use the best components to make the best leather is particularly evident in this department, where we create blends using products like food-grade beef tallow and cosmetic-grade beeswax." From this article: www.horween.com/blog/2010/03/23/chromexcel®-2
Although I use Saphir's OLC too and it's a fine product (not only for CXL) - there IS a lot wax in Chromexcel. So wax containing products like Renovateur or the lighter Lotion work just perfect on Chromexcel. For a bit of shine better than OLC obviously.
Kirby, for a brown CXL Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill boot would you recommend the brown or the neutral creme? I'm afraid the brown may darken some of the stitching
I'd probably use the brown!
Do you use the same oil for the side of the outsole? Or neutral, or something else?
Hi there, Kirby, recently I had purchased a pair of boots sporting #8 Chromexcel leather, I absolutely love them, so much so that I thought it would be a good idea to use the burgundy pommadier cream from saphir to try and restore some of the color lost through some rough scuffs, but boy, that was a bad idea as now I am left with leather that seems stained and left with a haze that won’t come off and now I am regretting what I have done and am coming to you in hopes I can still salvage my beloved boots with some good advice. So the question is, what can I do to remove these polish stains and restore the leather to its original color? Any help offered will be greatly appreciated, thank you and have a good day.
I know it was 9 months agoC but for what’s it’s worth shoe cream is suppose to haze up. After that you buff it with a horse hair shoe brush and that polishes the color.
Kirby, any advice for maintaining the contrasting stitching in its original color when polishing your boots?
ah. I really don't. Hard to do.
I have Florsheim saddle tan foundry boots ( chromexcel ) . Which colour of oil will go better with it ? Brown or neutral ?
I'm pretty careful about not scuffing my shoes. Will neutral be good enough for brown or any color if i only want to condition my shoes?
does the pommadier cream polish work on CXL?
Kirby what saphir products would you recommend for Cheaney Tweed C Brogue Boots. cheers
my chromexcel boots have some cracks in them, how can I fix it? I've tried mink oil and it did not work.
thanks
You can try the Saphir Renovating Repair Cream. If the cracking is in an area that doesn't crack much, then it'll work. But if the cracking is across the vamp, then the Repair Cream won't hold.
Nice video.. my question is : my toe is a wider one and am looking for a boot with wider and round toe boot; can you recommend any good quality leather boot brand as such please ?
Kirby, who makes this suit? It is the nicest looking one imo
You dont have that many videos on boots. Can you do more in the future? I'm an office guy that only wears boots. Redwing 3341, Nick's Charley waxed, whites main street and smoke jumper (for working in the yard, I was looking the the Allen Edmonds dalton wingtip or the Hamilton captor oxford. What are your thoughts on those two, I noticed you work with allen Edmund's often.
Kirby, do you know if this would be the right product for Red Wing oil-tanned leathers? The boots I have are their Copper Rough and Tough. Seems like the right stuff, just wondering if you have experience with it or know if others have.
Yes I believe it is. I use it on my 875s.
Hi Kirby, I know this is a very old video, and I hope you read my comment. I just got a very nice pair of Johnston and Murphy boots, which look uncannily similar to yours, and are definitively made of Chromexcel. I realized that a bit late, as I already tried to remove the finish with acetone, covered with some light brown Fiebings dye, put some Bick 4 conditioner, ending with a coat of Saphir cream, just the regular one for calfskin leather. When I tried to shine it, the boot came back feeling very tacky and won’t take a shine, so I realized something was wrong, so I stopped and started researching. I then realized that I did the wrong thing. I just purchased a tub of greasy leather cream and is on the mail right now, but in the meantime, I want to try to fix what I did. Do you recommend to do something to them right now, maybe reapplying acetone to remove all the waxes that I applied? Or maybe alcohol. I’m worried I might have ruined the leather. It still looks very nice, and still a bit tacky, although not that much as yesterday when I did all that. But I really want to salvage them. Thanks for any advice.
I didn't know and used brown cream polish on my 1000 miles. What can i do now to undo?
By not having the greasy leather cream (neutral), I used only one time the sapphire renovator (light application and buff, new Thorogood Portage, black). I want to switch to the greasy cream. Will I need to remove the wax from the renovator if only used once on new boots, or will I need the Saphir Ren'o cleaner?
Hi Mark, Yes - you'll really need to use the Saphir Reno'Mat to remove the waxes that have accumulated on the leather. It will help a lot.
I'm now wondering if maybe I've been taking a slightly wrong approach. I've been using Bickmore Bick 1 leather cleaner and Bickmore Bick 4 leather conditioner, which has yielded beautiful results. I've considered Huberd's Shoe Grease, but like I said, so far no issues with the Bickmore products. However, as scuffs happen, I sought out a polish and went with Saphir Tobacco Pommadier Shoe Polish. I was wondering your thoughts on the Bickmore (and heck, why not, Huberd) products, but also on the polish I went with vs what you're recommending here for this particular boot. Also, any thoughts on Saphir's Sole Guard for this boot, and also Fiebing's Sole Edge for this boot?
Thank you very much for your time and thoughts.
Aiki Tone Ranger good questions ! I also wonder about using Bickmore on my w1000
diadros RC Hopefully we'll get an answer. At least on which Saphir product, as perhaps the polish I purchased isn't as good an option as the grease he's recommending in this video.
The Hangar project ?
diadros RC Here is my opinion, for whatever it's worth. I didn't try Huberd's Shoe Grease nor Fiebing's Sole Edge (yet), but I did order the Saphir Grease mentioned in this video, in brown. I didn't get the Saphir Renomat (I can't go buying their whole line at once), but since I had around a month ago used the Saphir Pommadier, I used the Bickmore Bick 1 Cleaner, allowing ample time to dry, and then applied the Saphir Grease. I found that aside from a heel spot that is more faded, the grease did a better job on my 1,000 Miles making scuffs and scratches disappear. What I was looking for in the Saphir Pommadier polish, as he seems to have suggested in this video, the Saphir Grease product is more fitting and therefore did a better job for this particular boot's leather, didn't alter the original texture of the boot.
However, aside from coming a bit short on that heel as I mentioned, I found that once fully dry, it appeared... cloudy by comparison to its original hue.
I then applied the Bickmore Bick 4 Leather Conditioner, and now (aside from that daggum heel) my 1,000 Miles look a LOT like they did brand new out the box.
Those are my observations. I hope they're of help.
The Aiki Tone Ranger thank you for the info! I did order the bick4 and also the saphir grease mentioned in the video ( I ordered the neutral one since I prefer not to add any pigment to my boots yet ) . Once I try both products I will share the results.
Please make a video about how to condition oil tan leather without changing the color. Thank you
What type of leather cleaning soap did you use?
Can I use Saphir Renovateur to condition and nourish?
Question, just received a pair of Allen Edmonds chromexcel cap toe casual oxfords.New Old Stock(NOS) with bloom on the leather right out of the box. Brushed for a nice matte sheen. Cap toe seems to have dried out; how can I reconstitute oil content? Thanks.
The Saphir Chromexcel Greasy Leather Cream was made just for this: www.hangerproject.com/saphir-chromexcel-greasy-leather-cream.html
You could start off with a neutral if all you wanted was to rehydrate.
Can I use this product on my Wolverine 1000 Horween bison boots?
Hmm. Considering this boot, but Higgins Mill are very nice.
Hi Kirby. Would it be alright to apply the Saphir Dubbin Graisse before the Greasy Leather Cream?
I mean this on Chromexcel leather specifically. Thanks!
How to protect oiled leather from water? I had crazy horse leather shoes and applying a lot of sapphire cream helped a little bit, also eco-friendly waterproof impregnator did a little bit, but still, that kind of shoes have tendency to absorb water.
Thanks going to order. What color would you use for natural CXL?
Marc Possoff Natural..
I ordered a winter blue 1000 mile boot will that shoe care work for the boots
Is it posible to recolor chromexel/greasy leather boots from tan to black or dark brown?
Since you made this video, Saphir came out with “Oiled Leather Cream.” Between Saphir Greasy Leather Cream and Saphir Oiled Leather Cream, which do you prefer to care for Chromexcel leather?
Im sure the Saphir is good though I like Lexol Neatsfoot NF for chromexcel, it’s neutral color. Horween told me they put neatsfoot oil on chromexcel as the final step before they ship it.
The Saphir Oiled Leather Cream uses neatsfoot oil as it's basis exactly for this reason.
Horween, the company which manufactures the Chromexcel leather, recommends using neatsfoot oil. No particular brand.
Does the neutral cream lighten the color on the boots?
Hi, what leather cleaning soap do you recommend?
Can this leather be stripped and re-dyed a different color? Going from a light tan to a burgundy color?
Kirby this is great. I’ve got a pair of White’s in burgundy chromexcel. What product would you recommend to cover up scuffs and scratches?
It really depends on how deep the scratches are. If they are not super deep, then just some regular Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish can work.
...and if the scratches are deeper, you need to use something like the Saphir Renovating Cream.
The Hanger Project Will give it a shot. Thanks!
Im wearing Thursday Vanguards in Chrome Excel.
