Snuck into a club in Toledo Ohio in 87' to see them and I never looked back, they have some of the most criminally underrated rock albums ever released, pick any of them...just start listening
Hey man ... I grew up in Detroit and loved the first two albums from these guys. But your comment is out there. Marinos, while energetic and entertaining, was not a particularly good drummer ... by any objective measure. Can he even perform a fill? I mean, seriously. Dude was just not great.
I saw these guys at Joe Pops on Long Beach Island, it was either '78 or'79. I was either 15 or 16 and we knew the doorman. This was such a great show and probably my first bar concert. What I remember most was that crazy drummer...........that boy could play!
First concert I ever saw. 1981 at the Riviera Theater in Chicago. So glad I saw this lineup. Loudest concert I ever went to. I was a Freshman in high school and I loved them so much! Still do!
I saw the Romantics in 1982 in New Orleans at a place called Ole' Man Rivers. They were the opening act for The Producers. I didn't really know who they were, but man, they were dynamite good. I remember they played this song, and the guys in this video were the guys I saw. Coz Canler, the lead guitarist had the gold top Les Paul w the P-90 pickups (pictured in this video) and he would bend the neck until it would almost break - unreal. They also had the wall of HIWATT amps behind them like here. Nothing against the Producers, but it is simply a bad idea to follow the Romantics, they had so much energy, and their Rock and Roll style is great. My favorite band from the 1980s new wave era - by far. Coz Canler was/is a great Rock n Roll guitarist. I know, I have played for 40 years. I remember also that they had just released 'Strictly Personal', and played 'Look at her'. Geez what a bulldozer of a live song...totally rocked out.
Such a great song! This is my favorite Romantics song. This song brings back so many great memories. Sadly, this song did not get as much air play as some of their other hit songs did. Thanks for posting this video.
This was my song back in the early 80’s ,we used to go to a great bar in Buffalo called Uncle Sam’s and whenever the DJ played this he would dedicate it to me and my girlfriend at the time! Don’t know why it didn’t become a huge hit either, I believe it only reached #44 on the charts?
Putting Detroit back on the rock and roll map in the late 70's and early 80's! One of my favorite bands out of the motor city! Anyone know if there still around?
Yes, they are still out touring. The original drummer left the band around 85, though. They had Clem Burke for a while and now Brad Elvis is doing the job.
The Bill Tush Show had a number of great musical guests. Back then in the rural southeastern US, WTBS on cable was a real lifeline, and it exposed us backwoods folks to a lot of great new music. I remember seeing The Dixie Dregs, The Tubes...
wow lady ,vis circle was a huge punk l.a. band .same era .i hope , but probley not the same band . where did u play , we played port huron to gross point
Pink handkerchiefs and tight black clothes and not being homosexual, but just cool rockers. Taking a tip from Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps, the Romantics are just plain cool, baby.
This is the missing link between Them's "Gloria" and the Paisley Underground -Green On Red, Replacements, Dream Theatre, R.E.M... They're raw and kind of rootsy-garage-punk-rhythm & blues... What do you think?
The funny thing is that Wally looks like he's trying to me more intense than Jimmy. But Jimmy is just banging on those drums, and he doesn't calm down! Lol
@Ran Man Jimmy's niece-in-law commented on a FB thread that he retired because he got tired of not getting financially compensated for his songwriting. I assume she's referring to the embezzlement of royalties by managers on songs that members of the Romantics wrote. Apparently the band did end up finally getting paid after extensive litigation, but it seems that the experience left an understandably bitter taste in Jimmy's mouth. It looks as though the litigation netted Jimmy enough to retire on. Good for him, although I miss him.
the video was split between 2 different tapes. it took me a week just to get a watchable video from the 40 year old material rescued from the dumpster. i would like to see your copy to compare but i know you don't have one! thanks for watching.
Don't get me wrong- I was not criticizing you or your fine work in any way. Love the Romantics as well as the song. I just thought it might have been done by the show's producers, or somewhere along that line. Kudos to you for even posting this in the first place. Peace. :-)
Thank you Tommy for getting this video out there, I didn't realize the extra work you did to just get this posted! Well done! And amazing band and an amazing song!
This is the original bassist, Rich Cole... but by this time, just as their second record was released, lead guitarist/songwriter Mike Skill had quit and was replaced by the guy in this vid, Coz Canler. This line-up recorded the third record, Strictly Personal, which wasn't received as well as the first two and they felt they needed Mike Skill's songwriting, uh, skill back in the band, so they fired Cole and convinced Skill to rejoin on bass (his primary instrument). In 2011, Canler quit over a business disagreement with the band and Skill resumed lead guitar duties so Rich Cole could rejoin the band. Of course, original drummer/singer Jimmy Marinos quit at the height of their success in 1985 and the drum chair is now held by Brad Elvis, formerly of The Elvis Bros.
You don't need a shitload of drums to be good. This guy was criminally underrated
Yep!!! It’s all about the groove!!
No kidding!
Well said
The whole band was. Totally awesome. I like this line up best too.

Jimmy Marinos has got to be the most entertaining musician I've ever seen. Great band.

This band was the only band I went to 3 different states to see, fantastic!
Detroit rocks!

Brings back alllll those bittersweet years when we were excruciatingly alive...
These guys are so cool they're hot! And I say that as a musician. The drummer rules... love that kit.
They were all good musicians an a blast from my past.
I tell ya..there ain't a cooler looking and performing drummer than Marinos...before or since!!!!
is he still around?
@@bearcookie13 I have a friend who ran into him occasionally in Detroit a few years back. He said he's bald and fat now, lol!

i. Agree . One of my favorites from The Seventies .

Jimmy Marinos! What we have runs deeper than youtube!!!!
I saw these guys in 1984 in Eugene, Oregon, at the Hult, and they were beyond spectacular! One of the very best of all time, esp. Wally and Jimmy.
I was there too
I love this song!

Your guys are great! I’ll never forget you, on a night like thissssssss!
Love it! Never seen it before.
I saw them as Jimmy and The Eastsiders when they played some of the smaller places in and around Detroit.
Was there, physically anyway
Another fantastic song in The Romantics´repertoire.
This IS a wicked goood tune

Fun times in Detroit at that time, these guys and the torpedos

Love his drum kit, everything table top flat.
Detroit Rock City baby!
Very early Romantic. probably 1975 or 76. I saw these guys around Detroit during this time.
1980
I don't think they were together in 75, 76??
Garage pop!!! Yes
at 2:42 Wally kinda reminds me of Mick Blood from The Lime Spiders
this song kicks ass!!
Pink handkerchiefs and tight black clothes and not being homosexual, but just cool rockers. Taking a tip from Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps, the Romantics are just plain cool, baby.
True
Who cares if they are homosexual or not? Get over it, homophobe
Auser Aone , thanks for saying that
Rich AND Jimmy this has to be about 1977 or 1978?
Wonder where it was filmed.
LP ''National Breakout'', came out in 1980.
an afternoon like this
The drummer there, Clem Burke, reminds me a lot of "Slim Jim Phantom" of the Stray Cats ! 😼 🚬 🍻
That’s Jimmy Marinos
Not Clem Burke.

Wally may be singing lead, but Jimmy steals the show.
I have to agree :)

The Romantic B C before Coz
Weird to actually see Rich Cole in the band....
What was that bit in the very beginning about!!?
this video came from a tv show. that Bit was the ending of one scene and the beginning of a different scene. it's called a cutaway.
TOMMY HAM LOL Alright. I mean what TV show was that!
"Tush" a variety show with Bill Tush that ran on TBS in 1981
TOMMY HAM that guy looks a tad like Russell Crowe.
Terry Turner in the middle, guy on the right name ED turner i think,
maybe Larry Larson on the left.
they remind me of the hives tick tick tick boom
Great song but what's up with the horrendous edit on the guitar solo??

Play 80s music video
This seems to be another bass player different from the one on the middle 80s classics....
Mike Skill quit the band and rejoined in the mid 80's.
This is the original bassist, Rich Cole... but by this time, just as their second record was released, lead guitarist/songwriter Mike Skill had quit and was replaced by the guy in this vid, Coz Canler. The red head is hot ..
to many egos and bad management sunk this band
wrong about the ego's , true their managers robbed them blind and they spent 10 years in a legal battle with managers and record company .
Jimmy had a HUGE ego. @@herchelleonwood7463

Great song, bad version, missing beginning, incomplete. Listen to this song from the album
