Really great explanation =) if anyone is still struggling, you need to first understand how to multiple surds. Multiplying a surd by itself (square rooted number/value) inverses the operation (+ - divide etc). This is how square root 2 x square root 2 becomes simply '2' without the square root.

Its just a method to solve the surds . He is not simplifying them . To solve the surds he is using that method . Trust me my teacher also taught me this but in class it is how you solve it .
