I couldn't disagree more with you on the quality of this movie. Rio Bravo is my favorite John Wayne film and I could watch this over and over again. 5 stars hands down. The plot was easy to understand and had action, drama, comedy and romance. The 4K restoration was magnificent. This is a MUST BUY for 4K collectors and John Wayne enthusiasts.
I'd love to see Wayne's movie The Searchers on 4k. The Searchers was a critical and commercial success. Since its release, it has come to be considered a masterpiece and one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. It was named the greatest American Western by the American Film Institute in 2008, and it placed 12th on the same organization's 2007 list of the 100 greatest American movies of all time. Entertainment Weekly also named it the best Western.
I don't "need" slip covers but I do agree they should include one on the first run at the original retail price. And not porting over the Special Features from the earlier release is definitely BS since 4K is most likely the definitive release and 'end of the line' for physical media.
In 2014, Rio Bravo was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Rio Bravo is a major influence on John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 and George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. El Dorado is basically a remake but more fun.
I really want this even though it doesn't have a slip. It sucks that they suck took out that Hawks documentary; it was great and had John Carpenter in it
I pre-ordered my copy of Rio Bravo 4K a couple of months ago from Amazon USA. Amazon Canada didn't offer it for some reason. Just waiting for it to arrive! Thanks for the review Ken!
Stagecoach deserves a digital remaster. It’s such an iconic movie that it’s present state is a travesty. Would love a 4K restoration but I doubt it will ever happen now.
will this be released in a steelbook? We got Cool hand Luke, Maltese Falcon, Rebel without A cause. But now this and East of Eden don't look like they will get that same treatment.
I don’t know how true this is but I heard that the 4K titles that don’t come with slips are Warner Archive releases and that’s why no slips and the price is a bit higher.
Good review. Yeah, the Angie Dickinson story line is definitely cringey. Of the Hawks/Wayne westerns, I prefer Red River and El Dorado over Rio Bravo. Rio Bravo is still a fun watch.
Like you say Ken, if it doesn't have the slip it ain't worth the dip...especially for that price. Yes, this definitely should have a slip. I'm a huge John Wayne fan, but Rio Bravo isn't one of my favorites. Red River is my all time favorite Duke movie and one I'm hoping comes to 4K. If you haven't seen it Ken, I highly recommend it. Peace!
Rio Bravo is my favourite western and is an absolute classic. The icing on the cake here is John Carpenter commentary. Anything by Hawkes has got e must buy. UK copy came with nice slip cover and additional Blu-ray with extras you mentioned. It has only just been released here - sometimes it is worth waiting…😂😂😂😂
Men just looked older back then. He was 50 when the my shot this. Kinda like how sean connery already looked mid 40s in Dr. No when in reality he was much younger.
I’m really looking forward to getting this one. has lot of sentimental meaning to me when I was a kid me and grandad used to watch he’s VHS tape all the time, it was he’s favourite movie and John Wayne was his favourite actor to. Probably seen this movie, 30 times or more. So looking forward to buying the 4k.👍🏻
Ken you gotta pick up the Criterion Ranown Western 4k set. A bunch of the greatest Westerns ever made, all around 70-80 minutes long. Absolutely stunning 4k transfer, completely crushes Indicator's older blu-rays.
Hey Ken, I think you might’ve been a little too hard on this one. It’s definitely a classic. definitely not John Wayne‘s best, but probably in his top 10. And I’m not sure if you meant his career was winding down? he went on to make at least 20 rocksolid movies after this one, including the Man who shot liberty valance. I don’t think Angie Dickinson was necessarily too young especially for those days. Definitely too beautiful for John Wayne. Another great movie Angie in is 1964’s the killers definitely check that one out great cast have a good one👍
This is one of my favorite Westerns. Oddly enough it’s not because of the Duke, although I think John Wayne is really good. No, I’m here for I’m Dean Martin. I know you said you’re not all that familiar with his work. You should definitely check out, his “Rat Pack” movies he made with Frank Sinatra like, the original Ocean’s 11 (with Angie Dickinson), and a gangster musical, Robin and the 7 Hoods. Another Western he did with John Wayne, The Sons of Katie Elder. My personal favorite, Bells are Ringing. Another thing I like about Rio Bravo is the great Western character actor, Walter Brennan. I’ve never seen him give a bad performance.
thank you for the honest review. there is no excuse to cut special features on these premier releases from them. disappointed to see no slip on this one and on Eden 4K from them. i bought the other Warner 4K from them earlier this year and now no slip to look good on shelf next to the others. special features especially though are very important to me and many other collectors
@@midlevelmedia The Shootist is really good. Which was his last movie. It's better to watch it though after you have seen many of his films because it works just not as a film, but also sort of a mirror of his career. Him being an aging gunfighter battling sickness at the end of his life works so well for where he was and what he done.
I and my wife really enjoy this movie and although I'e never seen it, I bought East of Edent to complete my James Dean collection such as it is. However, I would not recommend buying either at the release price point and strongly recommend consumers wait for a major price drop. There is no excuse to release a classic at this price point with no extras besides a ported over commentary, a slip cover, and no DolbyVision encoding. If I had known this beforehand I would never have bought either at these and I strongly urge others to wait as well for a price drop. WB is simply taking advantage of collectors when they do this and I'm thinking of returning mine for a refund and sitting out what I know I can get later at a cheaper price. And if I knew where to go to directly let WB know what I think, I would.
I guess I should of pre ordered it. Seems like it’s sold out everywhere. And Amazon wants 37 bucks for it. I’m not paying that much I think it should have been 20 bucks for the release
Rio Bravo is a masterpiece, and is recognized as such! This is one of Wayne’s best performances! It’s on Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter, and Walter Hill’s top 10 films of all time list! The Wayne Dickinson chemistry is fantastic, as legendary film critic Roger Ebert points out in his review! You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about!
All first run 4Ks should have a slip. When the price drops later, then they can drop the slip. I think the slip should have different art work as well. I just got the Needful Things 4k with the slip and the different artwork…it’s a nice bonus.
The studios just want to milk the fans. One step after another. I guess that's why they won't release an ultimate release. Now they can release it again with some added stuff.
@@midlevelmedia I'm a recent convert after hearing Quentin Tarantino talk about it forever. I totally get what you're saying about the pacing but after a rewatch like QT says it's just a good fun Hang out movie.
Lol I knew the no slipcover was gonna be an issue for Ken 😂 Again and again and again all I care about is the movie itself, no slipcover isn’t a reason to NOT get a movie, I’m sorry.
This was Angie Dickinson's first film and boy!!! Does it show. She was green as grass in this. She was the only negative In the film. Ughh, I know my dad was not a fan. To him she was a bomb. That romance didn't need to be in that film, just sayin💯

Yes that would be a great one on 4K. I have it on blu-ray. But the landscapes in that would look incredible on 4K
I agree!

Rio Bravo is a movie I’ve seen dozens of times in my 58 years. It’s An All Time Great and it’s running time is perfect.
We need The Searchers on 4K. One of the best.
Angie Dickinson was in 'Dressed to Kill"...I think you reviewed that one recently.
I watched it, but didn't review it. That's cool though. I didn't realize that was the same person! 🤯

This was always shown on AMC during Christmas with the Duke. Also, El Dorado is almost the same movie and it’s just as enjoyable.
I prefer el dorado
@@mauriciogutierrez2145 The big difference for me is you get a young Angie Dickinson with Rio Bravo.. Otherwise, both are very good westerns.
