- Today on Modern Builds I'm collaborating with Mike Clifford from Modustrial Maker to create a folding, portable fire pit that runs on propane. We used GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) to create a super thin, yet strong table top that doubles as an outdoor coffee table. Be sure and check out Mike's channel linked below to see the concrete and metal stools we built!

I love the fact that it is portable. I think that increases the chances of anyone using one if they make it, bus conversion or not. Cool project, Mike!
No doubt!! Thanks Bruce
The author does like to from scratch, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
Clearly I'm biased, but this fire table turned out HOT!
Awesome job Mike & Mike - the routered rebates for the hinges were a nice touch
The reinforced concrete is a really cool material to use in this context. I’ve been trying to figure out a fire pit design that is portable and cooking friendly with a unique design aesthetic. This gives me ideas. Great work.
This is so awesome I wouldn’t even think of a “portable fire pit” it turned out amazing 😍
That’s is very cool. Love the is folds flat and can be packed away.
Thanks!!
This project looks really good... Ben in the background :D Converting school bus into a tiny house,,,, Wow... Looking forward to future videos :)
Great colab guys! Mod Mike, looks like it was a blast at the maker ranch too!! Nice project gentlemen!
Chris,
Yea, we had a blast. Mike and Ben are amazing hosts, and it was super inspiring to be around so much creativity.
Love the video! Great project. I like the guest appearance from Ben as he wanders through the shoot :)
Haha. Creeper Ben in the background. Look idea. Came out great.
Something so funny about Ben creepin in the background
I totally agree, these buds have been collabing for many years.
I enjoy watching like-minded people sharing their talents together.
One love for making things.
End of thought 🤔
Thankzth Modern Buildzth.
Hey Mike, just wanted to say a massive thanks for taking some time with us on Saturday, great to meet you in person. Your channel is awesome and it's an inspiration to me to try things even when i don't have the right tools. 👍📐✏🔩🔨🔧
Right on!! No doubt, thanks Damian
Nice video Mike! Looks great!!
Great job! The only thing is nothing can compare the real fire 🔥 wood fire.
Damn. I remember when you had around 10k. Congrats man
A good tip I use when using a jigsaw is that IF I have enough surface I use clamps and a strait edge to give me a straight cut. (Just a friendly tip for jigsaw users).
...just like you do with every other saw. I don't see why there's a stigma against jigsaws.
This is AWESOME ❤️
Very cool project Mike's! That GFRC looks awesome to work with. By the way...nice creepy cameo by Ben 😂😂😂
Fix This Build That thanks much! Do I see a GFRC river table in your future? ;)
Hello Am I glad I stopped by. I am going to make it. Thanks for lovely fire pit and making it simple for people like me to get interested. by the way I am 80 yrs old and starting new projects. I must be mad
Woooow
Always cool
Awesome!!
Omg Mike looks like a baby! I wasn't expecting to see him on this video lol
Ben creeping out at 3:06 :)
Nice love the vids mate
OH MY GOD! You're building a tiny house!?!? I can't wait to see the videos on that!
It's going to be lit!!
Hey Mike, great to meet you yesterday in Makers central Birmingham, cant wait to see the bus conversion.
Hey!!! Thanks Dave
Brilliant
LOL, Ben casually enters stage right, checking you guys out!!!
Nice!
NICE fireplace. QuickTip on how this can become an indoor fireplace if you don’t mind the fumes. Move it inside. You’re welcome.
- Roger
what a great idea
Ben's cameo!
this is so so cool!!!
Been subscribed for ages but... modustrial literally and verbally sent me here. To watch him some more 😎. Great video!
Thanks for checking it out!
Cool!
Nice job ;-)
Mike, i Love your voice and the way you Talk.🐝😇
Which Mike? :)
I loved this video on its own, but Ben made it so much better. I actually laughed out loud at that. Nice touch.
haha!
The highlight of this video is when ben walks in the background. But cool project dude
Haha, the secret to a good video.... ben cameos
Ben just chilling in the back 😂
Bus conversion sounds like fun. I am designing a series of Tiny houses to build on a plot of land about 20 minutes from the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead.
Enjoy your videos.
Sounds awesome! Thanks brother
Great table! Will you be posting videos of your bus to house conversion? I would love to see that process.
Just a suggestion: Since you make videos often, it would be a good investment to purchase the anti-reflectant for your glasses because it will help your glasses not look weird when recording with studio light.
Excellent project 👍
Thanks!!
Nice
It's good to see a guy like you using ryobi tools,,since ryobi gets a bad rep,i bought ryobi tools because watching your channel.
Awesome guy's I sub and hit the bell on Mike Clifford channel to ok my brother makers good project I love it later :)
Mike, we absolutely love this desert backdrop you have going and awesome project! Big fans of the MMP and your guys’ channels.
Great job 👍👍👍
Thanks!!
Just in time for summer! Just kidding. Looks good.
@homemademodern is chilling at the back of the porch :p
Nice fire pit
Thanks
lol @ Ben randomly in the background!
Especially since they were talking about quickcrete.
Holy Makers 😳😱. Ben, Mike & Mike?!!! Where'd y'all leave Chris?
Gorgeous fire pit 😍🔥!
@Mike (Modern builds, Mike), that tiny house school bus reno should be awesome. Can't wait and good luck.
We left Chris at Applebee's....
Loved your how-to and the design of the table. How much pigment would you need for a 4'x2' tabletop?
Kool
I thought Mike was wearing a blazer at first! 🤣
Did everyone decide to post on Star Wars day instead of Thursday? Also, I like Ben's accidental cameo.
Creativity
As soon as you said "Quickrete" Ben showed up!
Magic!
I don't build anything but it is satisfying
I’m tryna find out where you get your shirts from. Look fly as hell. Oh also, great videos!
wow
I would add an extra support between the two legs, when someone accidentally kicks one of the legs, they might move.
This vid is doubly great! Mike and Mike! M Squared ;)
When there's two mike's you know it's gonna be good!
Mike^2 !!
Hey, Mike! I just can't find this GFRC concrete in my country, can I use some other type of concrete?
Sweet!! Thank you so much for this! I'm looking at making concrete countertops for my kitchen and want to do them in all white. This is perfect! If you have any other suggestions or info I would greatly appreciate it Mike. Thanks!
Sweet!! If you have any specific questions, I'd hit up @modustrialmaker on instagram
Yup, I think Mike M is now pretty well versed in GFRC, but I'm happy to answer any questions you've got :)
I notice you guys do projects on a budget sometimes And i seen Propane fire tables going for $1000 and more For having a portable FP that is nice looking I wanted a whole patio set with firepit but the cost of store bought was insane !
So i started a quest on DIY a whole patio on the cheap without looking cheap I started with picking up skids while coming to and from work > skids = free - Gas driving - free (2018 Chevy Volt ) Broke down the skids reused most nails and made 2 love seat size chairs Wanted cushions so i gave in my first bucks and bought 10 Burlap coffee bean bags with print ($5) surplus store Took a few old foam pieces and some extra ready made cushions and tucked them is together and sewn the 4 of them up
Fire pit table stacked 4 skids on top of each other and found long self taping screws in my tool box Tied them together Next i wanted a round fire pit So i went to the dollar store and bought a 24 inch salad bowl with 1 1/2 " lip ($4) Placed it where i thought is was centred and on to one side of the table ran a marker around it and measured the 1 1/2" inside and made the cut on the Chip board i picked up on a new condo site that added it to "Free wood" outside the job site gates (24 x 24) which i needed my Blazer truck for Bought 3 hinges ($7) My next step after i get my Propane "guts" is 1 inch stone brick face tile (6 or 7 tiles for the bowl area with glue and grout and have it run it to chevrons of skid wood which will be 80 grit sand and blow torched to bring out the wood grains ..As for the "guts" 8 inch burner $14 amazon Air mixer valve $15 and shut off key $24 ( to my door $75)
My side table is skid wood and the trim like your table Is made up of a old IKEA bed frame "slats" which we was throwing out I downloaded a Canadian maple leaf and printed it out bigger and traced it out on the side middle of the table with a slight angle and jig sawed it out Then took wood stencil letters and scattered City names of different areas of the table (Toronto Ottawa Montreal etc) and ran the blow torch over the whole table Then removed the letters for a burned around look like its been stamped on Later then month i will pour Cristal clear epoxy resin with red tint for the leaf and a middle open area from a odd wood gap and then Clear the whole table So for the whole thing i figure $200+ I'm not good at editing and uploading videos but if you guys have a website i will post the play by play pics BTW i uses a jigsaw, Hammer and drill No real measuring or leveling ..wanted to get it as rustic looking as i could
Thanks this is super helpful for those that don't want to shell out the cash for a pre-built fire pit kit.
You live in Joshua Tree ?! I live 15 minutes away in La Quinta ! That’s so cool!
Dope dude!! Yeah, just moved out here
How many bags of the GFCR concrete did you need for this?
How do you keep the legs from folding when someone bumps it?
Could I use high strength countertop concrete mix and fiber like fiber chop or rebar fiber instead of the gfrc? That stuff is expensive and not readily available.
I want to see a video of the bus walk around and ideas maybe your subscribers can give you some ideas
Would this be able to be used on a composite deck? I really like the design and like the gas fire pits but wanted to make sure I would be able to use on the deck first and if so then a portable one would be great to use in the back on the deck and in the front on our paver patio.
Totally, It could be used wherever as long as it's outdoors
What was the thickness of the gfrc top?
Liked! Subscribed!
I think they do sell a fiber reinforced concrete at homedepot I know I used it
Not in the true sense -- Quikrete countertop mix and Quikrete Q-max have a very small number of fibers in them, but not nearly enough to make a difference. Hopefully one of the big box stores will see the light and carry GFRC soon!
How thick is it? I’m planning on making this , the top is about 5 ft x 3ft so I’m wondering 1 in thick is ok. Thanks
I would love to do this project but really do not want to pay over 300 for the parts I need. At that point I might as well buy one. What I am thinking is to cut the costs of some things. For starters the pigment from Firestone. What are alternatives so I can source it locally?
Ben looks pretty concerned you aren't using Quickrete...
We will convert him yet... ;)
genius hahahahha
Hey mike will we get any videos on the school bus conversion? That would be really interesting to watch
Yep, it'll be a whole series
Modern Builds sweet thanks man
Can I just buy this from you?
May I ask why you are using melamine wood? It seems to be so heavy to be a form and to be just to be thrown away.
The smooth Melamine surface transfers to the concrete, although it seems he wanted it smoother and sanded it anyway. If you want smoother you can cover it with a sheet of clear plastic. For smaller projects even plastic wrap works.
3:11 look in the background
The top looks so smooth! Nice project! But am I wrong, or there is a little bow in it? What could be the cause?
Francesco Zampieri no bow that we noticed. It could be the curved added by barrel distort of a worse angle lens. In practice, a bow can result if you rest the form on an uneven surface so it flexes as concrete cures. We leveled out the form pretty well before pouring the gfrc, however.
Thanks for the answer. I was asking because it seemed strange to see the bow...It's melamine, and well sealed, so the wood can't bend. And it's also a pretty light layer of concrete.
Now that I see better, maybe it's just the air between the concrete and the wood that deceived me.
Anyway I was asking just because I'd be interested in doing something similar, not to criticise :)
Francesco Zampieri no offense taken...it's all about learning! Melamine actually can bend under weight of a thick concrete pour. My first countertop a couple years ago, I cast against an uneven surface (my shop floor) and the form flexed and I got a warped surface as a result.
This is beautiful, could this be turned into a grill?
Francisco Burrola gfrc could be used for a countertop for a drop in grill. However, I think you would want to use a grill insert instead of the fire pit, since it would be easier to clean after cooking
Totally, just need a grate over it.... backyard hibachi
Modern Builds I love Mike M's let's just try it attitude....maybe you should try it out as a grill. I do love hibachi :)
Did you use anything to lock the legs in place once it’s setup, to keep someone from bumping into and knocking it down?
The weight of the concrete holds it down pretty well.
Thanks for the reply
any tips on brands or mixes for GFRC?
We used Fishstone GFRC mix -- link in video description. I've used a few different types of GFRC and Fishstone is my favorite.
Should have used some kind of vibration to get out the air bubbles in the gfcr
Not necessary with GFRC -- it has a defoaming admix in it.
Can you offer suggestions for a design of a CONVERTIBLE fire pit table -- one that is a standalone fire pit table say 4x2 long. that can be converted into a rectangular table for six using the fire pit table as the center element.
[HINT: Idea for your next video!]. I cannot find this discussed anywhere.
I have a porch where a fire pit accent piece would be wonderful but a full size table is not needed most of the time.
$35 product with $45 shipping?! Cool idea, but I'd definitely have to find a local retailer with the cement.
Is there a bus converting video?! I would like to see that.
There'll be a series on it
Who was that creeper in the background 😂
Video bombed instead of photo bomb lol
😍🥰
Yup, jig saws are hard to cut straight with. That's where the term "getting jiggy with it" comes from.
lol, I actually have no idea..just being weird. :)
very nice job...damn i just dont have half a grand to spend on a a pit waaaa
Total cost for this was about $300. However, $200 of that was the fire pit and kit, and you can pretty easily piece together your own pipe fittings, tubes, etc. and save about $50. You can also mix your own GFRC from scratch, with sand and cement sourced locally to reduce shipping cost, which can bring total cost down under $200.
p.s. look at the comment below from freaky flow -- he has some great tips for getting the fire pit components on the cheap.
