- 1960's "Because They're Young," taped off of AMC's "AM-Pop!" program more than 20 years ago. Dick Clark makes his movie debut, with Victoria Shaw as his co-star, along with Duane Eddy, James Darren, and heard-but-not-seen Bobby Rydell.
Look for teen idols and teen movie actors Warren Berlinger, Doug McClure, Chris Robinson, Tuesday Weld, Roberta Shore, and Michael Callan in supporting roles.
This one is by request (so we'll see if UA-cam will allow it!)
* I'm still working on "The Young Savages" retrospective. It should be up in a few weeks!

This is an awesome movie. I never knew that Dick Clark was such a good actor.
Dick Clark, A living legend. The greatest of all time.❤😀
He's unknown in uk.What's he famous for?
@@keithharvey7230 NBC & ABC Bloopers. American Bandstand, The krypton factor. New Year's Rockin' Eve Etc.👍 He was born in USA.👍
@@AnthonyTorres1988 And part of the "etc." would include the various versions of "Pyramid", from $10,000 to $100,000, that Dick hosted in the 1970's and '80s.
@@byrd56 Agree.👍😀
@@keithharvey7230 You may want to look up a movie documentary called, 'Bowling For Collumbine', Keith.
Dick Clark did not change that much for the next 45 years !
Thanks to a vigorous skincare routine and weight management
Ooh I've never seen this, I was born in 1980 so, I appreciate your posting it, I love stuff like this
Thanks for chiming in. There's a few more movies here that you might like and I have two original documentaries on the channel (working on a third at the moment), so if you get a chance, check 'em out (hoping you dig 'em, too.) ;-)
You were born too late my dear. I’m surprised but flattered that someone born in the 80’s appreciates what us old timers ( most of us dead) grew up watching and listening to.
The thing I remember most about this movie is the theme song. Started playing in my head the minute I saw the title.
@pattijay718 - If you like the song & lyrics, Helen Shapiro did a good version. For the melody Duane Eddy did a popular version. Both widely available on youtube.
Sounds like the theme song from an epic Western.
I am77 now and i can remember the movie in the mid sixties wonderful cast saw it when i was fifteen at our local drive in with my girl friend, like Dwain Eddy playing his garter, i have the record from the movie
This one brings back memories!
Great movie! Dick Clark was fantastic in his role as the all-caring teacher!!
He was no Sidney Poitier, that's for sure.
Later, an all-caring preacher.
Really a great cast for this movie back then.
I was 13 when this movie came out my friend and I went to the theater in bowling Green Ohio it is a great movie thank you for showing
Thank you 💪🏽
Moon Doggie! James Darren so handsome. Great cast!
Saw this film at a Saturday matinee in Harlingen, TX
never realizing that I would graduate from this very school a few years later.
Harrison High was
Herbert Hoover High,
Glendale, CA
The school has been the setting for several television programs and movies, most notably Because They're Young, which was filmed at the campus during the summer recess in 1959. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Hoover_High_School_(Glendale)
Troubled teen, Griffin Rimer, (Michael Callan) is being chased through the school halls by knife wielding hood, Patcher (Chris Robinson). Two years later, both co-star in the movie, 13 West Street, with Callan as a gang leader and Robinson as one of his henchmen.
Thanks for posting this, the last of the fifties teenage culture before the social changes of the sixties began, about 2 and 1/2 years later. I was in the sixth grade with Stephen Talbot when he took time out from school to be in "Because They're Young." The book, "Harrison High," was much better than this movie, and moderately notorious for the way high school was shown in it. They retooled the movie to fit Dick Clark's wholesome, gee-whizzy persona, as established on American Bandstand.
I take that back. I've watched a little more. Not so wholesome. The beautiful Victoria Shaw was married to Roger Smith, newly famous in "77 Sunset Strip" at the time.
Thanks for chiming in. If you liked "Because They're Young," check out the retrospective here on this channel on "The Young Savages," which has Chris Robinson returning as a gang leader.
Aw, hey - i like this movie, and I like Dick Clark.
P.S. I was also in 6 th grade in 1960 !
I saw this when I was 5 years old. My teen sister and my tween sister dragged me to it. Yawn. I suspect they thought it was dreamy.
Thank you so much for this!
Thanks for watching.
@@Mike_The_1950s_Historian Do you have perry mason Season 9 Episode 30 ?, is with dick clark. The case of the final fade-out. Please upload it, thank you. Year:1966
@@AnthonyTorres1988 I have to see if I have that one in my collection on VHS.
I have "The Case Of The Dangerous Delinquent," but that's not the one you're looking for.
It's also a Perry Mason episode that deals with juvenile delinquents. David Winters of West Side Story is in it.
@@Mike_The_1950s_Historian I already watched all of them, anyway is with the amazing DICK CLARK, he became a criminal on that scene. Perry Mason- the case of the final fade-out. You will find it soon enough, for that vhs tape, then you could upload it. Thank you.
Thank you!
Roberta Shore and Doug were in The Viirginian.
Roberta Shore appeared in the 1959 film, The Shaggy Dog with Annette Funicello.
Roberta was also the "mean girl" in the Annette series or maybe it was Spin & Marty on Mickey Mouse Club. I didn't like her much in that role but she was good at it.
It’s like a totally different world 🌍
In 1960,I saw the last of the minstrel shows at Harrison High School in New Jersey-in deep Blue Hudson County. Some of the young teachers at the school today were amazed when I told them that a few years ago.
Sell my clothes I've gone to heaven never heard of this movie before
Love this movie.
Based on the novel “Harrison High” by John Farris, whose later novel “The Fury” was filmed in 1978 by 20th Century-Fox. The musical score was by John Williams!
A really interesting film with a great cast. Enjoyed the experience of being in that zeitgeist. Do also check out THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE with Sidney Poitier and Glenn Ford which deals with quite similar themes made about ten years before this one. Both are very good.
"Blackboard Jungle" is a personal favorite, and obviously the template for this movie, but it's only about 5 years before, as this was 1960 in "Blackboard Jungle" was 1955.
Somewhat of the same "flavor," so to speak, though "Because They're Young" is a bit "lighter," if that makes sense.
Chris Robinson would later play the Italian-American teen gang leader in "The Young Savages," while Michael Callan as the teen gangster here had been the original "Riff" for "West Side Story," in the 1957 Broadway production, though it would be Russ Tamblyn who would play that role in the 1961 film adaptation.
I used to have the crusin record album 1960
WithDick biondi for wkbw radio 1960
The last song on the record was the theme to this movie
Duane does a pretty good job in this movie, considering his guitar isn't plugged in.

Like I dig this movie the most.
David, are you a boomer, or from a different generation ?
This was a great movie ! Are there more like it? Hope so!
I will try to upload another one soon. In the meantime we have some original documentaries on 1950s youth culture here on this channel, which references 1950s teen movies.
@@Mike_The_1950s_Historian -- You have a fantastic channel. I am an invalid and can only get out of bed an hour each day, so I love to spend time watching old documentaries and movies. Hi there, do you mind if I ask you your age ?
@@TREVASLARK my age or the commenter who began this thread?
If the latter, X-Ray Man I will let you decide if you want to answer that.😁
As for me, I will be 54 this year.
History class in 🏫 couldn’t be all bad if Dick Clark was the teacher!!!!
The nephew actor is a pal of “the Beaver”.
A really good 🎥 🍤 🍑 🍟!
That is bond to be quite the resume……..
American Bandstand & this movie.
That blond kid Eric is Gilbert off of leave it to Beaver
I am just here for the John Williams score (It is one of his first. and no he did not do the title music).
This was his only 3rd film he worked on but this was his first classical score. His previous 2 films "Daddy-O" and "I passed for White" were modern/jazz scores.
I liked his score for the 1965 World War Two drama "None But The Brave."
Who the heck is “ John Williams”🤷🏼♀️
He also did the music for Doug McClure's 1960 TV series Checkmate.
The following year, 1961, the movie, The Explosive Generation about high school teens and a young teacher, William Shatner, plus that song, Swingin' School. In 1962, Both Michael Call an and Chris Robinson reunited when they costarred in the movie, 13 West Street with Callan as a gangleader and Robinson as one of his cronies.
The same with Chris Robinson with Doug McClure and Roberta Shore in The Virginian.
I believe The Explosive Generation also starred Patty McCormick and Billy Gray.
1:13 - Was that a wave to the camera?
1:38:11 Roberta Shore is 80 years old. Most of the actors in this movie are dead.
I met her three times at Virginian cast reunions, very nice lady.
Actress Tuesday Weld is still alive.
Ohhh that’s very cheering news!
Sorry, can't necessarily buy Dick Clark as a former football player.
I always thought that Dick Clark was similar to Johnny Carson . The thing about Clark he had a thicker chocolate candy coating over his tough as nails SOB inner self while Carson had a thinner coating over his . There are several times they interacted.
What ? I haven’t a clue what your gibberish is trying to say.
@@65motowngirl He's saying Dick Clark was a tough as nails SOB.
How did you find out that Dick Clark's had a "tough as nails SOB inner self ???"
