In the vernacular of the period, "Beat" referred to Beat culture, attitude and literature; while "beatnik" referred to a stereotype found in cartoon drawings and (in some cases at worst) twisted, sometimes violent media/ film characters. In 1995, film scholar Ray Carney wrote about the authentic beat attitude as differentiated from stereotypical media portrayals of the beatnik
Beat Culture was an intentionally created thing. As Alan Ginsberg put it, they had to create a weird place because straight society had no place for them. And Ginsberg really only belonged in the slammer, if you ask me (I know, you didn't). William Borough's "Naked Lunch" rather illustrates the "Beat Head" more than Kerouac, IMO. I knew genuine Beatniks and one who became a kind of Queen of the Hippies in the Haight in 1867. She married a famous Beat Artist and they and other famous names of the Haight organized the Summer of Love events. "Hippy" was a term the Beatniks came up with as a term for the younger kids that were showing up. They liked the girls.... "Hippy" was a sort of junior hipster, which is what they considered themselves.
Beatniks, like their hippy successors, had some intellectual idealism, and were generally articulate in their alternative approaches. All this is missing from the low-brow characters seen here.
The title is a mystery. The projected title was "Sideburns & Sympathy." It's possible someone was confused about the meaning of "beatnik" and possible they cynically tried to cash in on interest in youth rebellion by slapping that term on a gang of hoodlums.
I like it, but not the casting for Iris and Red. I think the title is stupid. I would go with "I Did It for You," which was a theme for several characters.

A surprisingly thoughtful film. Although simple, the characters weren’t cardboard cutouts. I had the impression that the writer knew someone who melted down in exactly this sort of way, although it probably took years of success and toxic friendships to take its toll.
I know this is a pretty lousy movie, but does anybody know if you can get soundtrack for it? Written by a composer called Eddie Brandt's. I love the music in it.

This movie gets a lot of disrespect. Paul Frees, who was a very prolific “voice” in Hollywood films, wrote and directed this. Once I got over the fact that the title is just wrong, and got into the “groove” of it, I found it to be a pretty good job of filmmaking. Peter Breck made a fine showing in this, his first film. While Tony Travis was apparently a very talented vocalist, his crooning style must have been already outdated for a teen-oriented film in 1959. I’m so glad Paul Frees opted OUT of the proverbial “happy ending!” 7 out 10

In all 1950's teen movies the 'teens' look in their 30s-40s, the only actor back then who played teens and actually looked like one was Sal Mineo. Steve Mcqueen looked 40 when he made 'The Blob' and he looked in his mid 40s.
Beatniks weren't againsty society. they were a kind of Woody Guthrie generation ( maybe you know Arlo, Alice's restaurant and Wood'69 but is a completely different person ).
“Beatniks” was a word going around at the time. But the real entertainment was in juvenile delinquent gangs, biker gangs etc.. The film makers kind of dumbly got mixed up.
Unrewarding to the utmost, known primarily for its moronic misuse of the already regrettable term "Beatnik" to sell a cheapo run-of- the-mill teen-age hoods drive-in movie

Criminals commit crimes...they look like beatniks, doctors, truck drivers, teachers and presidents. Beatniks, Hippies, Goths, Hipsters, etc. are not criminal as a "tribe" they are often misunderstood...which they relish and capitalize on their influence.
This seemed to be a Ed Wood and Russ Meyer collaboration with a Elvis wannabe singing in a dive with a jukebox. What a gem !
Not enough booby-action for Russ Meyer
Yeah your right , good point!
It was the only directing effort of Paul Frees who was best known as a voice actor often heard on the radio.

Absolutely. This has nothing to do with the beat generation.

Indubitably ! This group look like Eric Von Zipper's gang without their motorcyclists & leather jackets !
These "Beatniks" were arrested and thrown in the can
before they even reached that beach!!
Where are the Beatniks, you know the people who wear berets and drink coffee, while listening to jazz...
And don't forget, reading reciting un rhyming poetry in a dimly lit underground coffee shop while another beatnik plays the little bongos!

To my recollection beatniks weren't especially known for committing crime, except maybe for writing bad poetry

Some really good acting, especially from Mooney. I seems a common story that the hero has to walk away from her/his past.
Nick Barclays walks on the wild side.
a lot of negative people out there another great movie from CCC 7/10 (499 likes, no dislikes )

Beatniks looked like Maynard G Krebs in Dobie Gillis. Yeah I lived it.
Of course later, Gilligan!!!!!!

Greasers, hoods,......but no beatniks.
You were a beatnik back in the day?
The Maynard character later confessed he listened to jazz and acted the way he did to fit in but he wasn't one. Idk

Watch 'Cool and The Crazy (1958)' It's the closest Reefer Madness 1950s film there is.
In the 70s, my friends and I went to the theater (after toking, of course), and laughed throughout that movie, because it was absolutely ridiculous.
