Whiz Kids TV Opening Theme

  • From the show Whiz Kids on CBS in 1984. Didn't last long but made computer nerds look cool. Look at all the hardware that kid has stock-piled in his room? Now it all fits in the palm of your hand. Dated but cool. Followed the release of the movie WarGames in theatres so not surprising.

It was also aired in Spain, in a Catalan channel called TV3 (they renamed it as "Els Supertrònics" here). I think I was like 8yo or so and was obsessed with this show. It's a pity it has never been aired again (at least here) nor released on DVD, etc. so very few people in my country has even heard about this show.

I well remember watching this show each week. I was 14 and very interested in tech / computer ( Commodore 64 and all that). In one episode one of the characters had a Neilson Ratings black box hooked to the family TV that could monitor which channel was tuned. When Richie found out, he said "Great! I can make it so Square Pegs is the number one show! " My sister & I, who had watched that show before, knew the reference was an amusing anachronism since we both knew that show had already been cancelled months before.

if they remade this programme today, it would be one boy glued to a single smartphone, rooted to his bedroom and lacking in vitamin D, with virtual friends and no life, occasionally 'visiting' his parents downstairs. How times have changed.

back in '84, I recorded this theme music from the TV to a cassette tape, because I thought it was so unique and cool but unlikely to be available much longer.
But here we are, and the real "Whiz Kids" have given us MP3 files, UA-cam, and RealDownload converters so I can listen to anyway.

I actually wrote a program to emulate what they did when they were typing on their computers. You could hard code what you saw on the screen and it would display no matter what series of keys you pushed on the keyboard. I read about that in an interview with the creators of the show and they had sample code in "Compute!" magazine.

I LOVED this show as a kid. I envied Richie's "computer room" and drew pictures featuring scenes from the show. Hell, I even pretended my old Vic-20 computer could be programmed to "break in" to the school's computer. My parents at first thought it was a cute show, and liked it because we also owned a cocker spaniel, but after my Grandma pleaded with them to turn the channel because the dog had the unfortunate name "Rabies", it became a somewhat banned show.

C64 uses 6510 processor. Apple 2 used 6502. Not much difference in machine code though. Back then I had an Apple //+ and my cousin had the C64. We did a temporary swap so I was able to tinker with both machines. The C64 is awesome as it has a dedicated SID and VIC chip but it was poor in I/O management which the Apple // was good at. The C64 disk drive took a lot of time to load that you could practically eat your lunch while waiting for it. I remember we used to joke a lot about it. The Apple was more of an experiment machine because you could build interface cards yourself and insert them into the slots and yes program them. I tinkered more with basic back then but getting the chance to play around with both of them was worth it =) I miss those days. Computers where a lot of fun back then compared to today. Thanks

Oh my good, this sound kills my nerves!! Who has composed that? But the Commodore 64 computers from 1984 (here in Germany still known as "bread box") are pretty cool.

can someone please help, I have a piano version of this music and Google says it's Mozart but I checked and they're not the same. Does anyone know the classical piece the Whiz Kids theme is a cover of please ?

I also loved the theme. My mom (god bless her soul) was a piano teacher way way back when I was way way young had an Apple // and loved watching the show. I really don't know if there is an actual cover version of the whizkid theme but my mom always played Mozart No. 16 in C major and the theme was taken from Mozart Concerto 21. My guess it was created as a mixture of both. I used to hit the keys when my mom wasn't using the paino to play the tune hehe...
