It’s interesting how much going electric benefits a SxS. Lower center of gravity makes it safer on the trail and more stable in corners, increased power makes it more fun, and instant torque makes it more capable. There’s really no downside to going electric in this space.

Gas SXS are way too loud. Really excited to start seeing electric models being developed. These will be much more pleasant on the trails once the price and range catches up to gas models.

They are only loud when people remove the mufflers or change the exhausts to much louder ones. Law enforcement could easily take care of that issue...if it's even against the law in the jurisdiction you live in.
In countless European countries such a phenomenon of widespread law-breaking has been completely avoided. This problem doesn't exist simply by making it clear that making your vehicle too loud is illegal and law enforcement actually enforcing the law.

Great to see the electric off road development.
Who’s going to be first to market in the trailer world with a trailer that has a battery built in to the front to recharge these. I’m thinking a tongue box with the equivalent of a couple of Tesla power walls that can be charged via the tow vehicle or campsite shore power connector so that you always have a way to recharge.

At 8500 more then a comparable gas 1000cc ranger, and weighing more as well, the price saved on fuel would take a long time to pay off, even when including oil changes and such. You also get a lesser range, and a long wait time for charging.

Pros: quiet, torque, not too bad of charging time
Cons: outrageous cost for a “first” gen tech, unknown battery life depending on environment factors
Unknowns: reliable engine for high mileage? Replaceable/recharging options when dies miles from home?
I want to really like the idea of these, but the tech is just too untested and expensive for blue collar slobs like me

Belts and clutches are annoying to hear. The Honda manual transmission silences a lot of the annoying whine. I can hear a side by side from 0.6 miles away when hunting, and all I hear is whine. That includes our ranger 1000.
During hunting week, we average 40 miles during the week. I'd love a crew version of the kinetic. The power in this must be amazing! Far stronger than the 1000cc and far quieter to get to the blind.
I'd highly recommend a built-in inverter to directly use the high voltage battery. Camping, hunting, etc. Wouldn't even need the generator!

Just to clarify for those who missed it or maybe didn't want to do the math: at 21:12 they showed the display reporting their _average_ consumption to be 1.074 kWh per mile, which means from 100% to totally zero % battery level you will get:
-Base model with a 14.9 kWh battery = 16 miles
-Big battery version with a 29.8 kWh battery = 32 miles
And that's with no reserve whatsoever, that means you are totally out of juice at 16 or 32 miles.
If you want to leave 10% in reserve that means you have:
-13.41 kWh for base model = 14 miles
-26.82 kWh for big battery version = 29 miles
In my experience and what I've seen other EV owners do, we tend to calculate at least 15%-20% reserve when we plan a journey as an overheating or cold battery can suddenly reduce your range a lot and then you'd end up out of juice.
So driving like they had in the video with the base model you will get about 14 miles of driving before you have to spend 10 hours charging, or 5 hours if you have paid even more for upgraded charging.
And with the big-battery model you will get about 29 miles of driving before you have to spend 20 hours charging, or 5 hours if you have paid even more for 240V charger, or they advertise 4 hours with upgraded charging and 3.5 hours with a specific charger.
That is, if you are in optimum conditions and actually get those as-advertised best-case-scenario charging times!
As a former EV owner I can tell you that charging times are rarely optimal and as-advertised, though not horribly far off in such cases of extremely low-power charging. BTW their advertised charging levels are only 1.5 kW with 110V or 3kW with 240V for a base model, 3kW with 110V or 6kW with 240V for the big battery and there's a lot of different levels from 1.5 kW to 9kW when paid for the upgraded charger with maximum only with a certain charger.
Problem is that if your battery is cold or hot, which is a likely scenario since this thing has no battery heating or cooling (at least Polaris has not informed us of such things, and Zero who is their EV systems supplier specifically said that they don't use liquid cooling). If your battery is hot or cold it can mean a fraction of the advertised maximum charging speed. And I believe that if you've let an electric Harley Davidson's battery (which also doesn't have active temp management) get to a cold enough temperature it will refuse to charge it at all until you've somehow got the battery warmer. I don't know if there are such limits with this Polaris machine but unless it has active heating for the battery it should, since trying to charge a battery when it's too cold will for certain have very high risk of permanent damage.

Thanks for the math. Thats really terrible range. I guess it would be fine for around the farm/ranch, if that is a small farm/ranch.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 2 роки тому +1

@@davec.3198 Fun part is that if it's cold the range can drop to under half of that! Well, I dunno exactly, probably nearly half since with SxS you don't have a cabin to heat so that won't waste electricity...I think? No wait, Polaris says it has an electric heater... So if you don't use that cabin heater you might not drop your range to at least much under half, but the drop will still be significant. But I bet that in below freezing you'll need to use the heater to keep the screen from freezing?
Even in my far more sophisticated electric car with pre-heating and active temperature control its range could drop to under half of summer time ranges (when temperatures were below freezing). And it wasted a lot more electricity while charging it in cold temperatures, plus it could take _a lot_ longer to charge then too.
Since these small EVs that don't have sophisticated enough systems to be efficient enough and are driven so few miles per year they don't even save enough CO2 per mile to outweigh the far higher CO2 emitted in their battery production. Even in optimum cases for them any potential savings will be absolutely insignificantly puny. So why even bother with these things? And at twice the price? How much CO2 is emitted just during developing these things?
If someone wants their SxS to be environmentally friendly Polaris should sell them with ECUs allowing to be run on E85, or the owners could retrofit such a system themselves? Then just buy E85 with bioethanol in it with the ethanol coming from certified sources. It'll cost massively less than going for one of these electric SxSs...
And your local mechanic or you yourself can fix any issues, instead of needing to hunt for a Polaris-certified electric vehicle mechanic somewhere in the boonies! And you need them to be Polaris-certified electric vehicle mechanics to maintain your warranty for the expensive EV systems!

Without knowing the type of driving that was done to get that average figure, your math isn't informative.
Polaris says the pack is heated on their website. Maybe a tiny bit of research before going full FUD mode?
EV owners don't "calculate" reserve. Like, nobody does this.
Your charging info is straight up wrong. Again, just go to their website, maybe?

So that's 45 minutes to an hour of driving on the base model (much less in cold weather!), and then 10 hours of charging (if your cold or hot battery will charge at anywhere near the advertised rate...)? Or if you pay for 240V outlet installation and I assume you have to pay more for the 240V charger (which is still slow as hell) then it's a _'mere'_ 5 hours of charging (plus however much slower your vehicle charges compared to advertised rates)?
For about double the price of an ICE model (plus the cost of installing an EV charger)?
Or then with the even more expensive larger battery version it's about 1.5-2 hours of driving (much, much less in the cold!) and then 20 hours of charging with the bigger battery and no charger upgrades? Or at best 5 hours of charging if you've paid for the 240 charging.
I'm sure they will sell enough of these at that price to all the religious fanatics out there, and I congratulate Polaris for any success they have with this, it's no skin off my back. But for the rest of use this product still is a real head-scratcher as we watch from the sidelines.
Especially since most people drive so few miles on their SxS per year that an EV emits more CO2 over the vehicles' lifetime due to the much higher CO2 emissions from producing the vehicle, and then with no proper temperature management that thing will be incredibly less efficient than electric road cars are and will therefore consume so much more energy per mile that it throws any "environmental" justifications out the window. I'm sorry, but a battery that is often out of its optimum temperature window will simply waste electricity a lot, that's just battery physics. And a battery that is outside of optimum temperature also has higher charging losses, the losses can absolutely skyrocket!
And I bet most of those quickly-spent batteries (with no high-capacity thermal management those will be toast just like over the years Leaf batteries have shown us will happen) will end up thrown out into the countryside to pollute the earth, as they would be difficult and expensive to recycle, because battery materials change all the time so no-one will be wanting to buy these old-tech materials in a few years, and despite the lies of the EV lobby there has been no recycling system pre-prepared or paid for by anyone.
I wish Polaris all the best, I will definitely still be looking to buy their ICE models in the future and especially their Indian motorcycles. I hope Polaris will start selling genuinely environmentally products by selling ICE models capable of using bioethanol, biomethane and that they'll promote the production of e-fuels.

Zero, the supplier of that EV tech claims their battery needs no active cooling but no way that's true. They just say that because they could never have added active cooling to an electric motorcycle without the size and weight increasing even further to totally unacceptable levels, and also cost going even further over the top.
An electric vehicle without proper liquid cooling is not a proper product.
So it lacks thermal management with liquid cooling, and apparently it also lacks proper heating?? Notice how Zero keeps us all in the dark regarding the tech specs and technology, that is a dead giveaway for them having something to hide and them being embarrassed with what their 'tech' really is! There is no way that battery without proper, really effective thermal management will perform well in constant hard use, cold conditions, hot conditions, and certainly won't be long-lasting!
I have owned EVs and PHEVs with very efficient top-of-the-line automotive dedicated battery cooling systems and they are worked hard to keep the vehicles from overheating and even then they will overheat when pushed hard in normal use! When a battery overheats the efficiency will really suffer, charging performance will suffer, and so will longevity. When a battery gets too cold it will definitely not function optimally! Even with efficient heating systems! (And with cars that have high-power heating systems you're using up your battery to heat up the battery...) With a vehicle like this without those pre-heating systems (I assume...Zero doesn't tell us if that is lacking or not) it will be even worse, you will not only be taking off with a freezing cold battery which will have abysmal performance, but the range will be terrible too (easily can drop to under half!), charging can take forever (Harley Davidsons can refuse to charge at all in very cold conditions!), and it really is true that you can damage the battery with the cold!! The cold really affects batteries, and even far more sophisticated cars with proper temperature management systems suffer heavily from the cold!! It really kills range, performance and charging!
There have been cars without active liquid cooling like the Leaf, with only air cooling, and we have experiences with those cars over very many years now and it has showed us with absolutely no doubt that their longevity and overall performance will be badly hurt due to lacking proper heat management.
Sorry, but electric systems like this that cut corners and don't have all the elements needed for a fully functioning system just don't cut the mustard. Anyone paying _extra_ for such a sub-bar system is doing so only due to being misguided, and because manufacturers purposefully hide the facts. Journalists who fail in their duty to provide correct information, and _all_ the information that consumers need should either study up on the subject matter or move to a career in advertising.
P.S. I am not an anti-EV 'activist', I am an automotive enthusiast who out of curiosity even bought a very high-tech EV already 5 years ago and have owned 3 PHEVs too. I do my short trips on an e-scooter (the folding kind that goes 25 km/h, not the Vespa-kind). I have designed a charging system for EVs which has been successfully in use for several years now.
I have since switched from EV and PHEV to a super-lightweight ICE-only car. With my relatively low yearly use of the car my lightweight ICE car emits far less CO2 than my EVs did, even now that I can only fill it up with fossil fuels before e-fuels are available and since there were no suitable CNG-equipped or biodiesel, methane etc. capable cars for sale. My car is so new that I will not be messing around with retrofitting any ethanol or CNG systems (CNG=Compressed Natural Gas, which of course runs on natural gas or biomethane which is the same stuff as natural gas but from a renewable source, usually gathered from sewage/farm waste/landfill, and CNG cars can also still run on gasoline if needed).
The savings from driving pure ICE instead of EV has allowed me to invest into actually effective CO2-reducing measures, in my case into significantly reducing my home's energy needs and emissions. In my profession I have built countless near-zero-energy homes, and our clients can upgrade from ordinary to near-zero-energy homes for less than the extra price of EVs (let alone after the extra tax burden, electricity prices, etc. which EVs will eventually cause everyone) and that way save immensely more CO2 than if they'd spend that money on the way overpriced EVs instead.
My conclusion after all these years of using, studying and working with EVs is that even though I think it's wrong to _oppose_ any technology as such it for sure is wrong to force anyone into EVs let alone force everyone into them, it's wrong to spread all the lies that are being spread about EVs (and especially the omissions of so many inconvenient facts which speak against EVs...), and it's wrong to subsidise EVs with taxpayer money. My stance is that cars, motorcycles and SxS should be ICE and they should just be run on biomethane, bioethanol, e-fuels and biodiesels. Heavy vehicles should be run on either the above mentioned fuels or liquid biomethane, liquid natural gas and hydrogen.
I wish Polaris all the best, I will definitely still be looking to buy their ICE models in the future and especially their Indian motorcycles. I hope Polaris will be genuinely environmentally friendly and start selling ICE products in their Polaris and Indian range which are E85-compatible (E85= 85% ethanol), as well as CNG-equipped versions that can use natural gas (which is still fossil but much cleaner than gasoline and even EVs) and most importantly also biomethane. I also hope Polaris will help promote, lobby for and help set up e-fuel production!

And that EV I had is what it's like no matter if I owned it or not, and my experiences would've been similar if I had owned another EV (well, mine was particularly high-tech but still not a massive difference to user experience, just a slight bit more efficient in numbers which you don't feel as a user). I definitely do not share stuff like that on the internet, I don't want or need any risks of being identified. And there is no reason to: the merit of anyone's points in debate are not any heavier based on things owned, and no-one's points are less true based on what they have not owned.
Whenever I debate things in my field, publish papers, or when I debated something at university, what anyone in the debate has owned was never a consideration.

A lifted electric golf cart would make far more sense for the money spent. This thing is way over priced, no range. Your money, buy if you got plenty to throw away.

Definitely a pretentious outback wealthy trailsmans side by side for the 2 or 4 times these type of people will even use them. Most likely for their kids. Must be nice, a $30k toy that goes 40+mph and won't bug their fuddy duddy subdivision neighbors 😮For the rest of us meir mortals we will have to wait till one of these wealthy types who just bought one of these EV SxS to say they had one and could shell out the $30k for one, decides they are done with it and the price will be significantly less with probably not many hours on it 🤙🏼♥️

This thing is absolutely useless outside of using it on maybe a farm or a large property to get around for light yard work.

how often do you drive a ranger 80+ miles in one rip...????

That’s exactly what it’s designed to be used for. It can also do more work than the gas powered model so I don’t understand your “light yard work” comment

This comment makes about as much sense as saying “This hammer is completely useless outside of wanting to put nails into wood”. Using it on a farm to get around and light work is exactly what it’s designed to do. That’s why they are sold out. They will eventually make other versions I’m sure, but for now this is what they released.

Less downtime? Really? I bet you will not have less downtime in an EV SxS in this decade compared to ICE! You try having any fault whatsoever in an EV, especially in the back country and rural areas and you report to me how readily your local SxS dealer will get your machine repaired!! I lived next to a major city and when my electric car had a fault it took them over 2 weeks just to get a qualified EV mechanic to look at the thing because there are so few of those yet. And actually there are so many problems with EVs, despite the claims of "so few moving parts"...hello: most modern car faults are in the electronics anyway, now add major systems like the battery management systems, charging control systems etc., which are also very new systems, and the far higher voltages running through them and also potential electric surges and problems from the multitude of chargers you connect your vehicle to!
So I had to take my electric car to be repaired at a dealership further away instead of the nearest one just to have _any_ service for EVs at all, then it took over 2 weeks just to have a mechanic available. Then it took them over a week to send data back and forth with the HQ to figure out what is wrong and how to repair it, then it took a week to get the parts and get the repairs done which required major disassembly...
When my PHEV had a fault in the electric drive system it again took about 2 weeks to get a mechanic available, then over 2 weeks to get the part and the mechanic available to do the repair (fortunately it was a far easier swap of a module, though of course super expensive but luckily it's all covered by warranty in my new-ish car). Luckily I could drive the car during the wait using the gasoline engine because it was a hybrid, just with reduced functionality of the electric drive system.
That was the situation when dealing with a car which are far more prevalent than SxS especially where people usually use SxS, and it was a major brand's big dealership, located right by a major city. Now imagine what it's like dealing with the kinds of small shops repairing SxS issues out in the boonies!! Do you think they've rushed to hire EV specialists?!
In addition to the problems of getting an EV like this repaired, I just noticed that they only offer the following warranties:
    - 1 year bumper-to-bumper (so that 'fancy' display stuff and electronics is covered only that long)
    - 3 years electric powertrain coverage (I'm assuming they will lump power control unit in that shorter 3 years too, and I would not be comfortable with facing the replacement cost of that thing...plus the undoubtedly long diagnosing costs for which you will pay $$$ per hour for many hours...)
    - 5 year battery coverage is way too short, as a 14.9 kWh battery is a big chunk of money, and 29.8 kWh is already huge and the size you will find on many electric cars! Plus diagnosing costs and labour when doing the actual repair. That'll maybe be more than a 5+ year old SxS is worth? As Nissan Leaf experiences have told us batteries without powerful liquid cooling thermal management they can lose performance very quickly. And all EVs have shown us that big faults are always possible, especially with a machine you're thumping around and splashing around off-road all the time!

Polaris has had a Ranger EV for a long time. They seem to hold up fine. This is much better tech vs that

@@findingxeno3285 AFAIK the Ranger EV doesn't have lithium batteries, the Ranger's batteries are of a technology that do in fact hold up better. These are lithium. I literally just told you that we have experience with thousands of high-quality automotive lithium batteries in the real world. In far easier use than these SxS will see.
