Always nice to stumble across channels on audio that are not snobby audiophiles. This community is pretty toxic against beginners but there's always a lot of gems like you around!
I bought one today with my Christmas money. The black one with bronze knobs and hardware. Just balanced it and playing now sounds awesome. Glad I found somebody awesome to review it!
I got mine this summer and I cannot believe how detailed the sound is. I'm hearing new things on old vinyl I've owned for years. Gorgeous piece of equipment.
This man is a gentleman eh? never met him, never will, but it feels like i have known him years, when really it has been like x2 videos (barely 20mins!!) Sir i thank you for your guidance, honesty and if you are ever in Kilkenny Ireland look me up as there is a beer and a warm welcome for you - there are some good vinyl fairs in Ireland (not this year of course....bloody Covid!) Keep it up., dont stop the music
I think your problem with the arm is because you have the cue lever in the up position when you have it docked and locked. You should have it in the down position. Only move it up when you're getting ready cue up a record. Basically, you're putting stress on the mechanism that raises and lowers the arm.
Yes, these levers have a spring in them and just like all spring systems, when you put pressure on them for extended periods of time they lose their tension.
Great video! I just want to mention when the player is not in use, and the arm is clamped down, it’s always best to lower the leaver as this particular turntable has instances where the raise and lower mechanism looses its ability to hold the tone arm up.
Hi Tavis. I purchased this turntable in april 2020 and it's a real pleasure to listen vinyls with it. Also old vinyls of 70' sounds incredible.... I take care of it (no dust) and it's just hapiness. Thank you for your videos...
I have had mine for 4 months. I put the 1/4 inch cork mat and switched to a higher cartridge, Technica VM 540 ML/H. Those two really upped the sound significantly. It has been a very good record player. I debated against the Red, Blue, and the VM 540. Went with the Vm 540 it came from Japan and was a good deal.
You made me decide on getting that Turntable and learned from you. I began collecting vinyls without a player 😅 now I will get one. New subscriber here Thanks for sharing great information.
Just found your channel today. I’m not a full blown audiophile, but I’ve got a pretty high end system and have been a vinyl fanatic for thirty five plus years. Anyway, my 13 year old son has shown an interest and vinyl and after doing his research (😃) Audio Technica has caught his eye and I thought I’d do a little research of my own and go over some reviews. I watch too many reviews of high end products and they are usually snooze fests. I really dig your smooth enthusiasm, your attention to details, how you explain what’s in the box and how to set everything up, and your videos are a real pleasure to watch . Count me in as a new subscriber.
hell yeah man, loved to see that youve done follow ups with this thing, most reviews of the turntable dont have follow ups. Gonna be getting this in a few weeks, super excited thanks for the great review!!!!
Thanks for the vinyl chat!! I have a rega 3 which I have had for years. I'm digitizing over 6000 records using audacity and my Linux system. I don't use windows or mac anymore. It's been going great!! I would like to pick up an audio technica turntable because it reminds me of the technics sl 1400 I had decades ago. Loved that table. What I love about the audio technica is that you can replace the cartridges easily and it has USB so it's a no brainier digitizing with it!! Thanks for the excellent video!! Stay healthy!!😀
That's amazing review! I got myself one last November after watching your review (a black one) and it sounds fantastic! I had a LP60 before, and I'm happy that this 120X is DirectDrive instead of Belt, so it maintains the speed accurately. I have Edifier bookshelf active speakers, and they sound great! Thanks!
Just received the black AT-LP120XUSB from my wife for my birthday today. I have hundreds of 60's and 70's LP but haven't played them since my Technics (circa 1976) finally gave up the ghost 15 years ago and I never got back into the practice because the drive belt just wasn't available for that model any longer. Thanks much for the great review, it has helped this newbie a lot. Will be looking forward to your next video. Glad I stumbled across your video!
Thank you Tavis for giving us a down-to-earth genuine review of this turntable. I'm going to order one based on your recommendation. Think I'll get the black one because I like vintage stuff and it'll suit my sitting room better. Now I'm off to watch your unboxing video. Cheers old bean!
I enjoy your videos I enjoy your calm soothing voice I had the exact same turntable and I had the exact same queuing lover problem one or two drops of dampening fluid is all it needed.
Just got this turntable and I’m looking forward to get some of my 70s record collection down from the attic and brought back to life to relive my youth lol
Having sold BOTH of my Technics SL1210s several years ago (funding a streaming hi-fi), I recently started getting the itch to return to vinyl. I can't afford another SL right now, so took delivery of the 120XUSB today, after your recommendation. First impressions: Very good for the money. Platter is less weighty than the Technics (for obvious reasons) but is surprisingly solid, motor torque is more than adequate, and pitch very accurate. Sounds great too, which is what it's all about after all. Keep up the great informative videos, Tavis. ♥️
Hey man! A litte less than a year later from this video, but I still value your input a lot! I am excited to try out this record player. Gonna be a major upgrade
A bit late to this review but I'm glad I happened across it. I recently purchased this TT and I love it. Thanks for mentioning the Ortofon 2M. I think that will be my first upgrade. 😊
I like the improvements Audio Technica has made to the LP-120. I have the previous model, bought it in 2013. You hear people say they are junk but I gotta say going on 7 years and it's a work horse. We use it daily and I've never had an issue with it. When it does finally die (hopefully no time soon) I will probably get this latest version (120X) in black. I did upgrade the cartridge to an AT-100E which is pretty awesome but they no longer make it.
Not gonna lie. The black lp120 is sharp and very nice. I got mine at a bargain for $75 at a pawn shop, it’s silver and it had a broken tone arm lock and I replaced the cartridge. I love this turn table with all my heart. I’ve had mine for a couple of years now, I think it’s time to upgrade the parts now :) I work at Best Buy and I see the black one and I drool over it like a loser but $75 for mine. I cant bring myself to buy retail just for the black color and Bluetooth. Maybe I could get the approval from the Mrs to go half. 😂
Nice update video, thanks. I recently purchased the same turntable, and so far I love it. I noticed in the video that you had the tone arm locked with the cue lever in the up position. That my be why you are having an issue with the cue lever. In the up position, you're applying a downward force on the tone arm and lever mechanism when you lock the tone arm down. I always let the tone arm rest on the saddle with the lever in the down position before locking it down.
Thank you so much for talking about studio monitors in this video! I decided on the Audio Technica LP-120 pretty much immediately as it seems to be universally recommended, with no bad reviews. I also watched your unboxing and thought it looked great! However, I’ve been deliberating for 4 days now, trying to decide whether studio monitors would be sufficient enough, or if I’d have to invest in an amplifier and passive speaker. The Mackie CR4s have been amongst those I’ve been considering, so it is reassuring to see that they’ve been working well for you. I can always upgrade in the future, but studio monitors should be sufficient enough for now - to test out the records that we need to sell and enjoy listening to the others 😌
Eventually I’ll upgrade...but for now the Mackies are great for me. I’m having a ball. 😍😍😍😍. Lovin my vinyl like never before. Thank you so much for watching!!!!
Hey what up my man Tavis! I agree upon the idea of you making a video on how to convert your LP audio with garage band using your MacBook! That would be a great informational tutorial and I believe a few of us would be blessed by seeing the process!
Awesome man, i love the silver one as it matches my 70s sony amp. Hoping to bring my old record player into school as well so i can have vinyl fridays with my students
I just ordered one today...cannot wait for it to be shipped....they say around January 8th 2021.... but tomorrow my Yamaha receiver is coming so at least I'll be able to stream some music to my Bowers and Wilkins 603!!! Cannot wait to see how the vinyl sounds on this sistem!
I owned the lp60 before the 120 and was so used to the automatic tone arm drop and return that I wasn’t aware of how light that the lp120 tone arm is and can easily swing around. Hardest part for me was getting a solid area for the turntable to rest on. Having three girls that love to run into the room would shake the table and skip my records
Seen all the videos from you involving this model, which I plan to buy soon. Watching all of them makes me more and more excited to spin my new collection. Made me even more pumped as I see you have Fine Line on there, the first vinyl I ever bought and first vinyl I will spin on this model!
Never commented on a video before, but just love this. And of course you're a teache, lol. Based on these videos, I bet you're a great one. Love the idea of bringing my old one to my classroom, I'm gonna do that. Keep it up!
1: Some harsh remarks from hi-if fans I’ve had for giving this turntable a thumbs up on other vids. ‘It’s made by the same company that make £50 stuff, the top chassis is plastic, it’s not weighty enough, “I give up, enjoy your junk” etc. 2: My personal experience. I own a great dac/headphone amp and a pair of £300 open back headphones, last night I played the highly regarded 2015 hi res remaster of the album ‘Forever Changes’ by Love. I then payed the equally highly regarded vinyl reissue of that album on the 120x. Aside from some low surface noise on quiet musical sections the level of detail was very close to the hi res transfer from the original master tapes that the hi res compatible dac/amp is processing. This is from the TT stock stylus and inbuilt pre-amp. As such I’ve ignored others telling me I’m ‘wrong’.
I also believe a comparison of a turntables sound next to what is almost a digital clone of the original album master tape is a better comparison than pitting a turntable against another turntable.
Hi Tavis ! I just purchased this turntable ( in black ) Your set up and unboxing video really helped me ! The needle upgrade sounds good too ! I am very happy with mine , and the sound quality is amazing 🤩 greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Great video sir, informative thank you for sharing. I’d like to comment on your queuing leaver. Never have the queuing lever in up position, when the arm is in the armrest and locked. That will stretch out and destroy The queuing lever. Also if you keep the turntable on the same surface as your speakers you want to get some shock absorbers under the feet of the turntable for extra speaker feedback protection. I also learned that thicker and heavier RCA jacks make a huge difference. I was an unbeliever until someone sent me a pair of high end RCA jacks and I could not believe the sound quality improvement. I hope my little tips help you although I’m sure you probably already know these lol
4:43 No wonder You have an Issue with the Lever. Watch how the Arm suddenly Pops Up when You release the Clip. You should NEVER! keep this lever up when You clip the Arm. This Not only puts Stress on the Bearings of the arm. But It will Dry out or Leak the Dampening Fluid. And this Is what has Happened Here. I have Fixed everything from By Passing the Nasty Pre-Amp to Fixing the Anti-Skate Spring on Loads of these. But the New Versions of these (Minus the Reverse) They have solved the Issues that Plagued this one, and Best of all It's In Black as well. Maybe just save a Little and get one of those Instead of lashing out on this one. Thanks for sharing. And good luck.
my dad bought me one of these on the 6th for my birthday and im soooo excited to use it! i've been collecting vinyls for a while now so i'm ready for it hahaha. loved this video and loved the harry styles vinyl! i have one as well!!
Not sure it’s been mentioned but leaving the cue lever in the up position causes the dampening system to dry out as you leave it exposed to the air more. Also I have the Bronze version of this turntable (Black on Bronze) and it looks fantastic if you can find one.
Hey buddy, first off really nice video you've done! Its Interesting, informative, humourous just in the right amount that I like but still cuts straight to the topic.. this is the first video I saw in your channel because im looking to buy a AT turntable and I subscribed soon as the vid ended.. keep on going!:)
Thank you so much for your Reviews about this turntable. You really helped me with my decision to order one. Though I was told that the 2M Red would sound worse than the system that comes with that turntable. They recommanded me the AT-VMN95ML instead of the 2M Blue, I wanted to buy. They said that the AT-VMN95ML would almost sound as good as the 2M Bronze. And if you want to try a Shibata-needle there is the AT-VMN95SH, too. Unfortunately I haven't got my turntable yet (still have to wait several weeks because it is out of stock), so I can't tell you about my own experiences with the needles I mentioned above. But I am still very keen about your experiences. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. Greetings from Germany! 😊
The Ortofon 2M is a decent entry level cart that's basically in the same class as the AT-VM95E stock cart on the LP-120X. Both have bonded elliptical styli, so not much of an upgrade to shell out an extra $100 for. The 2M Blue is a nice step up to a nude (full diamond) elliptical for $235 (similar stylus as the VM95EN), but the VMN-95ML that you pointed out is a nude Microline stylus....one of the most advanced and best tracking tip designs on the market. The SH is wonderful too. Both less than $200 (coupon codes can bring the ML under $150)....both are a true upgrade, perfect match, and have a very strong audiophile following. The fact that the VM95 series is mated perfectly with the LP120X's tonearm makes them an excellent upgrade choice over the either of the Ortofons.
I think you were told correctly - The Ortofon 2M Red isn't really much of an upgrade for the LP-120X because the 2M Red is essentially in the same class as the VM95E...both bonded elliptical styli (very good entry level carts). The AT-VMN95ML and SH both have full diamond nude shanks and more advanced line contact styli that track better, last longer, and sound better. The 2M Blue is a nude elliptical, more like the VMN95EN. That whole Ortofon series is sexy looking, but the top end of the AT-VM95 series are serious performers too, and just happen to match the tonearm of the LP120X perfectly, making them the better choice IMHO that happens to generally offer more bang for the buck.
Hey man! Good to see and hear you share about the turntable. Just bought the black one - great system, easy to work and set up - sounds good - although I think I need better speakers - I love the bass. I have an acrylic mat on with the supplied felt underneath which seems to help, since there seems to be a slight wobble - not sure if from the mat or the platter. My one dislike is the cueing device that seems to drop too fast and hard. Keep up the good work - we will listen! Blessings!!!
Hey...thx for stopping by! I had the same issue with the cueing device. I learned how to fix it. Here’s my video about it: ua-cam.com/video/PO-TqQAlmW8/v-deo.html
Hey Tavis. How are you?? I don't own a turntable any more. But I do still have quite a few albums that I purchased in early 1970 when I did have two. My albums are in perfect condition because they've only been played once and that was when I opened them and copied the tracks to my Akia reel to reel. After that I sealed them up and put them away and they have never been played since. I do plan on getting a couple these turntables . I did buy one of these turntables for my son as a Christmas present last year and he loves it. He doesn't know how lucky he is. When I was his age I couldn't afford equipment this nice. Great video, keep 'em coming.
I'm about to purchace my first turntable and became a vinyl addict myself and by watching your videos i think im going to choose this one.. I saw many possitive words about this so thats the one.. Also i saw a few people talking about the same problem on the tonearm drop so maybe its an manufacturer issue..Thanks for your help!
Instead of buying the Ortofon 2M red, upgrade the spare AT cartridge with an ML stylus that fits on the AT 95e cartridge, this makes a massive difference and is far superior to the 2M red.
I'm glad I came across your videos and your channel on this turntable. I been looking into getting this turntable for a couple weeks now. I seen a couple complaints about the dampening for the tone arm cue in the reviews. It makes me feel better that you are going to or have done a video on it (I haven't gotten that far into your channel to see yet going to check next). Anyhow, when you started describing the substance you was using to fix the dampening, I automatically thought... "i wonder if silicone shock oil or silicone differental oil would work" since I'm big into hobby grade radio controlled cars and trucks and thats what they use in them, and then you flashed a picture of the exact same thing I was thinking and that made me chuckle a bit but also relieved that I dont have to try to try a special fluid down, because I already got it LOL. Keep up the videos. More I watch them the more I want this turntable.

Why thank you so much. I appreciate you for watching my channel!
Yep. Went to a local store as a beginner. Made me feel like an idiot
You have such a soft and friendly voice.! I'm glad I found you .!
Truth Seeker ahh thank you for stopping by!🤩🤩🤩
You are next Morgan Freeman. Your voice is indeed very soothing and pleasant to listeners.
I bought one today with my Christmas money. The black one with bronze knobs and hardware. Just balanced it and playing now sounds awesome. Glad I found somebody awesome to review it!

So helpful. Such a great upbeat demeanor too. A pleasure watching. Thanks so much.
Thank YOU for watching!
I knew there was a reason I liked you, that harry styles vinyl! A man of taste
I try. 😎
I was looking at reviews for the turntable and got even more excited when I saw HS’s vinyl 😂😂
🤮
had the exact same thought process as you 😂
@@Scythesyn was literally about to comment "puke" myself lol
This is a man living his best life ✌ thanks for the content
I think your problem with the arm is because you have the cue lever in the up position when you have it docked and locked. You should have it in the down position. This happened to my AT too. It's a cheap issue 😂
You made me check my arm, but thankfully I lower it automatically. Thank you for the info though.
Great video! I just want to mention when the player is not in use, and the arm is clamped down, it’s always best to lower the leaver as this particular turntable has instances where the raise and lower mechanism looses its ability to hold the tone arm up.

Why thank you for watching!
Just bought mine last week. Good content man. Thanks for your posts. Excited for your new stylus!

Monitors play the music as it was intended to be heard.
Glad I found you as well. Bought the Bluetooth version of this turntable and followed your setup video. Thank you!

As far as speakers vs. monitors, it just comes down to what you prefer. Like many things, preference is very subjective. Great vid thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for watching.

Your a legend Tavis, turntables are a work in progress, consider a vintage turntable from the 70’s or 80’s, they are reliable still

You will definitely need to upgrade those monitors if that red candle falls off the shelf, too close to the edge !!! Great video
LOL! Thx for watching. I appreciate it.
My LP60 drops heavy on the record when you use auto play. I am happy with my turntables from Audio Technica.

Jacob Lasek YEAH!! Thx so much for dropping by. I hope you’re a subscriber! I appreciate your comment! 👍🏾
Thanks for sharing this with us
Never commented on a video before, but just love this. And of course you're a teache, lol. Based on these videos, I bet you're a great one. Love the idea of bringing my old one to my classroom, I'm gonna do that. Keep it up!
The best record player cartridge is moving coil cartridge very well done
Your videos are pleasing and really helpful!
Thx
Thank you
Thank you for this video. I was on the fence on wether I should get this turntable. After watching your video I’m definitely going to get it.👍🏽👍🏽
That’s awesome. Thank you so much for watching!
That’s so awesome! Thx for watching. And have fun collecting that vinyl!!!!!!
I will surely take your advice. Thank you for watching too. 🤩🤩🤩
I cannot stop looking at that red candle. It is going to fall down...
You are a good man, would be very sick to chill with you. One love brotha
I fixed it. But definitely in the future I will take your advice. Thank you for watching my friend
So when you clip the arm keep the lever down? And when I unclip it put the lever up?
Which knew version are you mentioning over here...LP120XBT?
@@illicit___X HI Karlo. Yes at the time of writing, this New version had just come on to the Market.
You sound like a great teacher 🫶🏻
So Shads video did guide you in the correct direction on fixing the issue with the hard needle drop? AWESOME! I am glad I could help!
Yes Lord.
Awesome that you are upgrading your stylus to the Ortofon 2m Red, I have that same one! I have an LP120 black one! :)
I wanna black one sooooooo bad 🤩🤩🤩
my dad bought me one of these on the 6th for my birthday and im soooo excited to use it! i've been collecting vinyls for a while now so i'm ready for it hahaha. loved this video and loved the harry styles vinyl! i have one as well!!
I just unboxed mine and it was missing the needle lol. Getting the replacement and can’t wait to finally try it out!
Missing the needle??? Wow. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it when it’s all set up. Thx for watching!!!
ur a god tavis, your videos are so nice, slow and understandable
Ahhh thank you so much.
Travis you are such a great guy , and speaker!
Thank you 😊
That’s lovely. Thank you again. ☺️
Not sure it’s been mentioned but leaving the cue lever in the up position causes the dampening system to dry out as you leave it exposed to the air more. Also I have the Bronze version of this turntable (Black on Bronze) and it looks fantastic if you can find one.
That’s an awesome tip!!! Thx for sharing!!!
Your lever is faulty - I just celebrated a one year anniversary with my lp120xusb.
Thanks for keeping it 💯
Thank you so much for watching. 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so much!!!
That whole Ortofon series is sexy looking, but the top end of the AT-VM95 series are serious performers too, and just happen to match the tonearm of the LP120X perfectly, making them the better choice IMHO that happens to generally offer more bang for the buck.
thank you for a great turorial :) Tavis :)
600th like right here. Seroiusly, you sound like a natural at teaching.
Thx so much. I’ve been teaching elementary music for 23 years. 😊
That’s so awesome!!!!!!!
Hey man, I bought this turntable partially because of your videos, following your set up tutorial. Thanks so much!
That's so awesome.😎
Yes, do a video on the USB conversion. I have not yet done that. Thanks
Instead of buying the Ortofon 2M red, upgrade the spare AT cartridge with an ML stylus that fits on the AT 95e cartridge, this makes a massive difference and is far superior to the 2M red.
thanks for both your videos! im gonna do buy this one soon to..
Thank you so much for stopping by! 🤩🤩🤩
Great record you’ve got there, harry styles is amazing!
Thanks for the tips Tavis!
I've got one on the way and quite excited! Replacing my old and worn out Panasonic. Anyway, thank you for the tips.
You’re gonna love it!
