The brother in the ripped jeans is very knowledgeable about Fillmore and its history and how that affects the current socioeconomic conditions they’re facing today. I hope he can enlighten more people in his neighborhood.
When I was growing up in SF, Hayes Valley was the hood. The projects where they are in this video was an old school multi storied project building. They tore it down and built the "town house" style projects in around 2000. Brothas were always out partying, having fun out front in the late 80's to mid 90's. The whole Hayes Valley neighborhood was a ghetto- black folks living in all the surrounding Victorian houses, not just in the projects. Prostitution was big in the neighborhood. A lot of gentrifiers started moving into Hayes Valley in the late 80's for the cheap rents. Now the rents are astronomical. Bear in mind, this project building is surrounded by people who are paying a lot of money to live there; Mostly techy types. The commercial part of Hayes Valley is 2 blocks down the street and was mostly black owned businesses: record stores, soul food restaurants, liquor stores. That too started to change in the early 90's when boutique clothing and jewelry stores started opening up. Now, that's all there is- high end boutique retail stores, restaurants and bars. 2 blocks down the street from where this is filmed is a hangout for all the young, hip folks living in SF with a lot of money. The complete opposite of what is portrayed in the video and how it was until about 20 years ago. I like the fact these guys are still trying to hold it down, but they're the last of the Mohicans.
