This guy is criminally under-rated, he's an absolute magician on the guitar. He's never gonna be a conventional 'Guitar hero' cos he's not about solos and posturing, what he's doing is, although he has been influenced, all his own now, I thought he was taking the guitar into the 21st century until they broke up, it's so good to hear him again. He made the Verve, the rest are excellent, he's sublime, they are a truly great band.
When McCabe said "it's the best record we've made" he wasn't trying to be deceiving, he just didn't realise Ashcroft and Potter would overlook most of the ambient/psychedelic songs from the Forth recording sessions and instead choose shitty ashcroft ballads like "I See Houses", "Rather Be" and "Valium Skies" to appear on thr album. Instead of songs like All Night Long, Blue Pacific Ocean and other songs we haven't heard of. Nick McCabe had to fight tooth and nail to get Columbo on the album.
@LeaperBoing You are SO right...The worst part after the break in 98 was that I couldn't find any project that he was involved in. I love the way he plays and his use of feedback and putting a new spin on the songs in their live shows. I have missed him, the Verve reuniting and the result "Forth" was the highlight of 2008. Richard does well on his own and the others but when the four get together they are flawless.
I don't know if Nick alone is the sound of Verve, I think Simon's sound on the bass is also a great Verve signature. The Verve is the sound that this four guys do together, nothing more.
Excellent from Nick. Never really heard him speak before. He looks really well and up for playing once again with The Verve. Wonderful Can't wait for the new album
Anybody see the BBC's list of the best 40 guitarists of the last 30 years? It was hilarious- no McCabe but a spot for Simon Tong, and high spots for both John Squire and Bernard Butler. All three of whom could not play the Verve's lead guitar material when tasked with replacing him. Then there's BJ Cole, world renowned slide guitar player, murdering McCabe's guitar parts when McCabe effortlessly managed it with the slide on his pinky. Dying for more Black Submarine!
That was excellent. I think the only other time I've heard him was from a video way back when they're being interviewed and it goes something like "I'm Richard from Verve....and I'm Nick" and that's all I've ever heard. Look at all those people walking by not realizing how close they are to greatness.
nick and si jones are collaborating with davide rossi (the violinist who performed with them live in '08) and mig schillace. The band is called the black ships. hopefully they release an album this year because i've been checking their myspace for any new music details and nothing yet but they will soon!! im glad because i love nick, fav guitarist ever, and i love si jones bass playing, also fav bassist ever so im glad they will stick together and create new music together.
Nick in The Verve is like John Cale in The Velvet Underground, while they are the SOUND of the band they are very underrated by the public and critics at the same time.
McCabe is a fuckin genius and the sound of the verve but Ashcroft is the Drive and writer that drove the band to stardom. Ashcrofts voice also cuts straight through you
i was there in the front. he wasnt looking happy and he and his guitar tech people were constantly talking. they had to restart some songs because things werent working.
It's a shame that while Ashcroft was doing his solo thing, Nick didn't also do something solo of his own. maybe something ambient to make people realise how good he actually is.
holy shit you saw him!! WOW! man yeah i probably would be shitting myself if i saw him and would not do anything! too bad! hopefully, youll see him there again.
I hope to god the new album is good, i'm very exited, but i hate it when bands release something that reflects poorly on their classic work. but he seems confident. heres hoping :)
Forth could've been a really great album. Why didn't Mover, Major Force, Muhammed Ali, Blue Pacific Ocean and Ma Ma Soul make the grade on CD? Could've saved Monte Carlo for it as well and re recorded Change My Life. Ah the wasted possibilities!
i agree i only recently heard the Forth b-sides but man, THAT's what the new Verve shoulda sounded like a lot of what ended up on the album sounded more like a glorified Ashcroft solo record (i still can't really see "Love is Noise" as a Verve track) but the tracks you mentioned are fantastic never heard Change My Life though, i don't think
hard band to follow the raconteurs?!?! Come on nick, you had to be holding back the tears of laughter on that one, THE FUCKING RACOUNTEURS, do me a favour
i do get the feeling with nick that he is too good a guitarist for the treadmill of rock music, he's never gonna be the kind of player that would be happy just playing the same thing over and over and possibly he finds the verve stifles his talent hence the break ups.
McCabe is genius, Ashcroft lost the plot when he got married and pushes all his drivel that results from it instead of seeing sense and letting Nick push the direction thats where it went wrong.
this guy is definitely a magician on the guitar. one of the few totally instinctive players. brilliant with effects and sound.
Magical guitarist. Just superb

Columbo is one of their best tunes... A true return to the classic vibe.
This guy is like the Hendrix of textural guitar for me.
He's looking very well, my favourite guitarist, not your typical rock guitarist, he's articulate, modest and passionate. And wears good hats!
@LeaperBoing You are SO right...The worst part after the break in 98 was that I couldn't find any project that he was involved in. Cool to hear him talk ! Thought he was this moody, agraphobic, paranoid recluse !!!!
But he seems quite nice :)
GET THE VERVE BACK TOGETHER NOW!
Best guitarist of the 90s and beyond
The reason I play guitar...hands down...dream dream dream
great to listen to macabe..legend !!!
I don't know if Nick alone is the sound of Verve, I think Simon's sound on the bass is also a great Verve signature. The Verve is the sound that this four guys do together, nothing more.
Agree completely about Simon on the bass👍
God of guitar..
I wish his played... With verve's music!
Real hide of paramount guitarist..
I wish they would play Coachella gain, so glad we were there for this show...
Excellent from Nick. Never really heard him speak before. He looks really well and up for playing once again with The Verve. Wonderful Can't wait for the new album

HES A SOUNDSCAPE ARTIST THATS PROB WHY
detras de un buen vocalista .que le dio vida a una banda---- existe un excelente guitarrista quien le puso alma a esta.
Nick Mccabe ... so unassuming in person ... so epic on stage.
he is very underrated, but i like how he usually stays out of the spotlight and lets his music do the talking
Volcanic. What a purely fantastic musician. Human whale music.
Nice to hear from Nick for a change.
Saw this set. It was very good. I was a little surprised.
saw them at the Warfield in San Francisco... greatest band ever. can't wait for the new album.
Great guitar virtuoso. Shame The Verve just couldn't stay together. Keep going dude 👍😃🎶
That was excellent. It's good to hear him speak on the band's behalf. guitar whiz.
i love him
My hero
firt time i've heard him speak, and he's suprisingly articulate
He is a lecturer at staffs uni now
absolutely genius

He speaks really well.
Love him

Shame for McCabe at T in the Park 2008 for the tech problems. SECC was a shit hot gig, Glad i got to see them twice in such a small amount of time.
@vannyfresh dude, where can i find black ships music?
holy shit you saw him!! WOW! man yeah i probably would be shitting myself if i saw him and would not do anything! too bad! hopefully, youll see him there again.

they were supposed to play in Croatia?? jesus why theys split up :((((
Nick McCabe is the greatest. ViVa la Wigan........
@pixargod It's not terrible but I don't think the track met its potential on the album. It sounds much better live, imo.
