fun fact. freo prison is now a heritage building. you can go through it and not much has changed. Bon Scott even did a short stint there
Excellent, thanks for that
Bon Scott!!! One of my FAVORITE singers!! AC/DC is awesome!! And John Button, this entire story is a fiasco! Coppers think everybody are liars, they never listen. What’s that say about them? I can’t say all coppers are rotten but there’s a lot of em out there!
@@Marachelle7 we had quite a few of them here back in the day. andrew mallard got screwed over even worse than this. he went to california to escape it all and was run over and killed in a hit and run!!
That's when Bon made a "Jail Break"... 😉
@@racerx009 and "highway to hell" was from the leopold hotel into fremantle [canning highway]. true story
This is what happens when the system is more preoccupied with putting people in jail than getting justice done.
Very True, thanks Jing
Guilty and never proven innocent, definitely broken everywhere
A very tragic story and, yes, not near enough compensation for the suffering an innocent man endured.
Thanks GG
What a nightmare to be locked up for a murder you're innocent of. I can't imagine the anguish. He should have gotten a lot more money. He will never escape the stigma of the accusation. RIP Rosemary.
Thanks, TCR. Take care out there.
Thanks for that zero and good point re the stigma and of course RIP to Rosemary
Good morning! I think I watched this case on Forensic Files. It is frightening to see how incompetent judicial systems can be once they develop tunnel vision.
Thanks for that Michelle
Or when they’re lazy. They knew he wasn’t guilty when the first expert told them he didn’t hit her. Then when a serial killer famous for hit and run confessed. They didn’t want anyone to find out what they did to him.
Incompetence, tunnel vision...case closed no matter lack of real evidence...yadda yadda...the more things change...🤔🤫
What a horrible miscarriage of justice. Thanks for the post
Thanks for watching again Laurie
How sad that Rosemary's parents won't accept John's innocence. Thanks, TCR!
Thanks Jennifer, yes the mediation team did try and get it properly resolved
she did in the end but she never forgave him for letting her walk away alone, thinking that it caused her to be alone on a dark road [the area was almost industrial at the time and there was a mental hospital like 500 metres down the road]
Sad? It’s rotten! After everything the man went through and then they find out the truth and the mother comes down on him like that?! I am very sorry they lost their daughter, obviously, but, c’mon. Idk
I hate that they won't accept his innocence as well. They've spent so much time hating him that they can't acknowledge their own guilt.
She sounds like the person who birthed me and a few more people who can present all the proof in the world even with DNA clearing you of everything, clearly you are still guilty no matter what in their eyes
Definitely a pitiful sum concerning the damage done, but then no amount of money would fix that 🤷♀️ brilliant as always 👍🙂
Great point! thanks again Sleepy G

That’s really sad , that wasn’t much money for a ruined life 😩
yes indeed, thanks Linda
Wow. He got screwed over badly. I’m glad he’s out, and that he has his family.
Thanks Beth
Over and over again.
One can't blame the police. He's out looking for her and suddenly he finds her laying ahead bleeding-his own words. But one does blame the police for doing no work after that! #shame
@@kimmccabe1422 Yeah, you can blame the police, when they were beating people to get get a confession. They also forced a deaf mute to give a false confesson.
@@TheFirstWhiteRanger proof he was beat besides from the convicted killer?
Absolutely sinful that this man was bullied into signing a confession that he killed his girlfriend.. His whole life changed paths because of this. As well as another family lost a daughter, heartbreaking.
I’m glad to hear he is or was may be retired by now, helping others in a plight that he was stuck in..
As per usual Crime Reel, job well done. Thank you. The amount that the government gave this man was a pittance compared to what what was taken from him.

Nowhere near enough compensation. Poor fella. Better late than never, but... man. Hope this finds you well, Crimey! Hope everyone out there has a great week!
Thanks AB, lovely and early this week, have a good un
I thought his compensation was miserly but no amount would have adequately replaced the loss of a healthy life, employment and joy. He endured so much and I came to see him as a very courageous man, thanks CR
thanks for that Anna
It's horrible how in many cases especially young people, give false confessions because, the police interrogate them until they mentally can't think anymore. I don't think there is any amount of compensation adequate enough to compensate for the damage caused by imprisonment and mental anguish. Thanks CR

@@carmenmcalister7338 good for you, enjoy 🎂👍
Such a compelling story! As for the compensation amount that John was awarded, I personally do not believe it was enough considering it took most of his life to clear his name. Punitive damages and mental anguish alone should have amounted to a much larger sum, but more than likely they were based solely on his time spent incarcerated. Thanks again TCR. Have a blessed day!😄
Cheers MLP
I hit enter too early - you have a blessed day too, cheers
Good morning! It's snowing outside and last week was lovely. Ah spring is here. This really touches a nerve with the human penal system. Humans are the worst and what we do to each other is shocking. Prisons do nothing but generate more criminals. Early prevention in childhood and home life that is toxic. I am convinced that as a society we can start earlier and prevent this instead of closing the barn door after they all get out. Humans put out fires instead of stopping them.
Thanks Tracy, enjoy the snow
I completely agree and I have expressed this opinion online as well, elsewhere.
I really hope that in the book the actual detectives were called out for their gross lack of doing a proper investigation.
Thanks ML, i think it was highlighted
Thanks, once again CR for another interesting tale of woe. Put me down for "No, it was not enough!"

Thanks for watching MJ
Wow! Definitely not enough! A lifetime of anguish and pain. The loss of his love. Breaks my heart

Great narration CR👍🏽
John and his family can never be fully compensated for the travesty. Think about it; his parents lost their lifestyle supporting their son. John couldn’t see his dying mother. His siblings suffered too. They can never be compensated. However John should not have to think about money for the rest of his days. Five million pounds should do (wishful thinking)
very true, Thanks for that Michele

Sorry to hear this Matt

Poor John, what a very tragic situation, I'm so glad he wasn't put to death, I sort of see how his story would have seemed false because he'd only left her for a short time before driving on to find her injured but i often hear these stories where evidence is not fully investigated and people put away for crimes they did not commit, I'm glad he finally got out of Prison even if he did have to admit to the crime he didnt do

Great story! I'm glad John finally got his name cleared. I'm well aware of what it is like to wrongly convict people as it happens to my people all the time deliberately! John should have been given much more for an award settlement!
Thanks Alke, its not good that it happens with the "framing of innocent people"
@@TheCrimeReel welcome. True. It isn't good at all.
Oh my, this is so sad!! All that evidence that cleared his name, virtually none that convicted him, and he suffered for all those years. The entire system let this man down!!
I don't think his lawyers did their jobs properly at all. I've no clue about Australian law, especially back then, but having no lawyer present for hours of grilling seems like it should count for something.
And to have the verdict read out incorrectly?? What a crushing blow!! He should have gotten a million dollars for mental anguish for that one faux pas alone poor bugger.
Not only should he have received better compensation, but police, investigators, prosecutors and lawyers should have gone to jail!! Imagine if he'd been put to death!!! This is just so tragic. I'm glad he is able to find some measure of peace helping others in similar circumstance.
Thanks for sharing TCR. Enjoy the rest of your week! xo

Sizable amount, yes. But considering the length of time and the torment experienced, I think its worthy of more.

Hi Jackalope!🐇🦌 Yes, I'm late, the sky must be falling.😂
A laughable amount. I wonder if anyone falsely convicted has ever considered filing a civil suit against the prosecutor when it has been discovered that they deliberately ignored evidence of innocence? That might actually go a long way to making them more accountable to seeking truth over convictions. 🤔
He deserved millions. Have a lovely weekend, Crimey!!
You too, cheers Marla
The amount of John's "award" added insult to injury. He should've gotten at last twice that. Maybe 4-6 times.
very true, thanks Lois
Wow! I've recommended this case to CR in the past. No idea if I had any influence, but I'm so glad that it is now being covered. Often with serial killers like Edgar Allan Cooke, the police concentrate on the victim's close friends and relatives. At the time, the police were not willing to accept that a serial killer was on the loose. This simply did not happen in sleepy, innocent Perth, Western Australia. The boyfriend was the obvious suspect, so they ran with that. Well ... even in the unlikely event he was guilty, the police and judicial system ignored Cooke's confession that he didn't kill her.
Hi Pangorban1, funny enough I had you down as recomending the Cooke - that was June 2020 - and when I edited it, I recorded that you may have requested it , and basically it didnt sound right the way I was saying it so I cut it out. So thanks for remembering , here was your comment
"It's not unusual for an innocent person to be arrested and convicted for one of the crimes of a serial killer, because the police assume that someone close to the victim is the most likely suspect. There was a case in Western Australia of two men who were convicted of crimes later confessed to by serial killer, Eric Edgar Cooke, who conducted a murder crime spree in Perth from 1957 to 1963. Even so, despite Cooke's confession on arrest, one of the innocent men (Darryl Beamish, a deaf mute) served 15 years and the other (John Button) 6 years. Button was released due to public outcry. On his release, Button strongly campaigned for Beamish's innocence. Both men were finally pardoned."
Thanks for recomending and sorry I didnt mention you but the way I worded it wasnt right
Cheers, it was a very interesting case to cover
@@TheCrimeReel That's great, and thanks. What a memory! I'd forgotten that post. Your filing system is awesome. However, I got the serial killer's name wrong in my previous comment. His name was Eric Edgar Cooke.

Hiya Dee, hope all is good for you
He thought if he kept telling the truth... that poor man... he trusted the system. The system just didn’t let him down... it crushed him. Having a stutter is not suspicious... the ignorance of those times!.. He’s been on Australian tv over the years... he seems the most inoffensive fellow. I’m glad he’s free and hope he’s enjoying a quality life with his loved ones. As for the compensation... it’s pathetic to think this could make up for the horror of it all. I wish him good luck and best wishes.
Thanks for that Lillian
