Great advice, getting prepared and hired isn’t actually the most difficult part of the equation. It happens to be the next 25 years of service. 🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒

Thank you for your advice and channel. I decided to become a firefighter in summer of last year and you helped me get the job as soon as hiring opened in my area. I start the academy in 2 weeks. Much love and continue the work man!

Part of the reason I ever lost interest in firefighting was because of constantly hearing how it's too competitive and yes even hearing active duty firefighters talk about how the system is rigged. The ones who struggle to promote still say the same thing. I lost interest in my late teens and now 10 years later I regret it big time. But I start my EMT program next month

How I hate my mind being that weak. I remember I stopped believing in myself in Emt school because the entire class I was in was re takers… they all told me it’s their second time… I had the potential inside me but I just didn’t believe in it because of my peers.. now I’m in paramedic school. Highest grade in my class… screw the rest. Focus on yourself and the “what if”

I don't know if this will help anyone else or not, but I once shot myself in the foot by choosing a start date at a different job over a 2nd interview, on the same date, with the fire department. I thought I was making the "wise" choice at the time, having no idea (until someone helpfully pointed it out after it was too late) that a 2nd interview, at that particular department, was a formality. If anyone is in a similar position, I strongly suggest reaching out to someone in your network, to find out exactly what the likelihood of acceptance or denial is. The hiring officials themselves may not be able to give you anything but a canned answer, but from my mistake, it is worth digging around for an idea of where you stand, before letting the chance go by.

Your videos are great. Really appreciate them. Lots of people like yourself have suggested that I get a volunteer fire job as a stepping stone for some experience. Where I am from, you must live in that district so that leaves me with just one volunteer department i can apply for. They apparently wont hire anyone young and with certifications as they are tired of putting money into young fire fighters just to have them leave when a full time gig arrives. They have a crazy amount of applicants so they can do as they wish but so hard to even get a volunteer position. Lying and saying I dont want a full time job in the interview after spending $20K on courses doesnt seem right as they surely know that is bs. Any tips?

Hello. I’ve watched your channel for a while and it helped me get hired full time. I was let go in the tenth month of my probation. My skills were on par for my experience level and it wasn’t some giant blow up situation it was a death by a thousand cuts type thing. I did wind up feeling relieved to be leaving that department but I was wondering how I can answer this in a fire interview.

There’s a video that I think would be worth breaking down, it’s about a structure fire in Rogue River, Oregon by the title “House fire in Rogue River, Oregon, 6-28-22.” and I thought it would be a good idea to break down cause of the comments..

Integrity is key in public service jobs during the application process. When you’re answering questions, whether it be during the background investigation, or during the interview with a panel, make sure you are being %100 honest. The background investigator and the panel will smell BS from a mile away and you will get bounced right away. Also, if you get a question related to integrity during the interviews, they are looking for you to say that you will do the right thing (obviously). The ole days where guys covered up their coworkers taking stuff or making big mistakes are gone. If you answer that you will ignore your buddy taking a can of coke on a crash scene, you’re toast.

It’s so hard to get anywhere in interview processes for myself. I have had multiple practice scenarios with my uncle a Lt. With a country Fire department as well as with my auntie who is a Captain with a municipality department in a major city. Every time they say I cover everything they would be looking for and my personality radiates excitement and eagerness to work my butt off yet I don’t even make it to the interview process every year consistently. It’s becoming beyond disheartening, I’ve put everything into being a FF and it’s all I want but at the moment it feels impossible

Nepotism and cronyism is very much in play when you're dealing with government and unions. You can pretend this isn't true and spend years making yourself more qualified, or you can acknowledge it and start networking your way to the ears of the power brokers. Sure, standout applicants will get accepted. But for everyone else - the middle of the road folks - it doesn't matter if your qualifications are a little better than the other guy. The biggest consideration in hiring is always whether or not they know you. It just makes good economic sense. You can have all the potential in the world and it's still less risky to hire a known quantity with guaranteed mediocre ability than to gamble on the unknown. And when there are positions that need filling and no applicant has connections, HR will err on the side of hiring people that help, not hurt, their EOE image because it can cost millions if they don't. Training is cheap. Lawsuits are expensive. The first hint you might be a liability will get your application into the circular file (that's lingo for the trash can for you youngsters). Almost every preemployment background check includes a look at your credit history. If you have a default in there, your odds of getting hired just went way down. If you can't handle your own business, it's highly likely you'll drop the ball handling your employer's business. It's not rocket science and it's not a fair process. But it is a process and any process is easier if you know how it works and who pulls the strings.

    • @josephb8499

Yeah. You’re absolutely right when it comes to networking. Station visits and making a good impression!! And working hard will definitely be a priority

When I got hired, part of the backround check was going in a room at the sheriffs office where a guy asked me about social media, told me to pull up my facebook on my phone and then proceeded to scroll through my entire facebook! Good thing I never posted anything on Fb or I’d be screwed!

Take some vocational classes in building construction. The more you understand about how buildings are built, the easier it is to understand structure fire behavior and interior firefighting tactics.

  • @TheRealThaenatos

The biggest thing I have hear is demographics. I beat out 3500 to 5000 people and got hired. Yes you can be a great candidate and not get hired, but most likely it's something you said or something they saw or found that precludes you from getting hired. It's sad that some that get hired athat shouldn't and some that don't get hired that should, but the "weed out" process mostly works and there is always a reason.
