Reminds me of when I was a child, and we used to go through Ashburton while commuting to and from Christchurch to see the family. In those days, State Highway 1 ran down East Street. I think it got shifted over onto West Street sometime in the late 1980s. During the 1990s the junction at the North end of the town between East St and West St was altered so the State Highway traffic went straight ahead down West St without having to turn.
