Not all "Western" countries waited for months for United States to start the effort. It was actually led by Poland, Czechia and the Baltic states. Only the tanks were not western made. But it was the countries of Central and Eastern Europe that waited FOR THE WEST to realize what is going on and get the ball rolling.

None of those nations are great defense powers (Poland just recently got strong) and none of those nations have defense manufacturing of significance. Ukraine needed the West to help them survive. US, UK, GER, FRA etc. Poland gave the highest per capita, but Ukraine would still lose. It has been the West with Ukraine (and that's when they decide to give as little as they have) or nothing and Russia spends 5 to 10 years in Ukraine, but ultimately wins.

The question of, “Does the West really want Ukraine to Win?” The majority of people in U.S. in particular, don’t care. We want politicians to stop spending out money on a war between two authoritarian states. This war was entirely avoidable, NATO admitted that they provoked Russia, and they even boasted about it. The only people gaining from this war are the military manufacturers, and the politicians whom they pay to keep voting for more spending of taxpayer money. Money that just goes right back to the military industrial complex. Both sides take money from their citizens to fund their war, then they send those same citizens into a war they never wanted. I don’t get how the U.S. still pretends to be the good guys, as we destabilize yet another region of the world, without any attempts at peace talks.

The West really wants Ukraine to win and Russia to lose, but win/lose in a certain way. The West (some of it anyway) wants Russia to make an active decision to pull out of Ukraine rather than be kicked out, which might leave Russia angry enough to make trouble in other ways (escalate perhaps). I’m not sure this thinking has much merit but it is what some think.

The Ukrainian allies don't seem to understand that there's no upside to half-commiting. Either send the right amount of proper aid...or don't.

@ekaterinamitroshina1992 no its not. If we just trickle in the weaponry, it helps Ukraine to hold on but it doesn't help them win. From a utilitarian standpoint, we just throw our resources into a woodchipper, a little at a time.
Send in the equipment, at the right time, and the right amount and Ukraine could win decisively.
Going back to those Abrams, we only sent in enough for one battalion. Is Ukraine going to go toe to toe with Russia successfully with that?
If the USA had authorized the handover of F-16's at the same time, and Ukraine could do some form of combined arms doctrine, what would the effect of that assistance be?
Instead, they get the tanks now and the airplanes...eventually? How do you plan based on that.

Whenever someone asks the question “Does the West really want Ukraine to win?” I always ask what would the west have to gain from Ukraine losing because the west would lose a strategic partner in the region, look weak and unable to protect our allies, Russia would be emboldened to try this sort of stunt again upon regaining their strength, pro putin elements in the west would also be strengthened (think Orban and the like) and all of this is without taking China into account as they are most certainly watching to see if they can potentially get away with an invasion of Taiwan and how they should potentially go about said invasion if it were to happen.

Ukraine was always a buffer country. Never an ally, lucky for the West a change of government happened in 2014, since then the West has built ukraine up for the war to come, it came probably sooner than we thought, either way ukraine losing makes no difference to the west. Most other countries of importance are in NATO, so they are protected. We are prepared to pay money for Ukrainians to die for the west, just not too fast or slow, just at a speed that bleeds Russia. The west will support ukraine for a while yet, but it'll come down to money, how much are we willing to pay to keep this going, morals don't come into this and never have.

But, if Ukraine could bleed Putin longer... well... good. Also, I am of the opinion that us not getting involved in Crimea was our attempt at realpolitik. And he said thanks but I'm going for more and so I'm extra inclined to make sure he remembers his blunder. Don't mistake realpolitiking with weakness.
Edit: Also, I want some extra cathartic revenge for his meddling in our 2016 elections. He's got a phenomenally good miss and disinformation campaign apparatus and I only see it getting better going forward. So, to disrupt that we need him to have instability at home. I think this video shows an accurate perspective of how long it's taken the west to supply equipment when it's needed. Being an American, I'm more than a little aghast by how long it's taking us to provide the needed weapons to Ukraine. Having said that, I can only imagine the hand wringing that comes with trying to figure out what technology can be shared with a country with the fear that the technology could end up in enemy hands either willingingly or unwillingly. Many of our weapons also require a long supply chain that's hard to maintain by other countries. Also, we're trying to figure out how to maintain enough inventory in case a second conflict in the world breaks out. Happy to see the F16s going over to Ukraine. What I think we should also do is start building factories in the U.S. to mass produce all different types of loitering munitions (thousands per month) and supply those to Ukraine. We desperately need that level of production in place anyways for other future conflicts.

And Putin personally has invaded Georgia, South Ossetia, Chechnya and Crimea. Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic all have people alive today who remember Soviet Invasions during uprisings of the 50's and 60's. @mjk Good point about the loitering munitions. Another thing to consider is the USA's Exports. The USA's single biggest Exports are Petroleum Products and now LNG, and before this War you barely exported LNG. I've recently been in Europe. Everyone is considering what support might make Putin use a Nuke, so everything supplied to Ukraine has to be considered. But Corporations in America are making huge Profits the longer this War goes on. And while individual consumers hate paying more for 'Gas', your Government gets a percentage of that as a Tax for Road Repair, yes? America's Economy grew at 2.0% 1st quarter this year, and 2.1% last quarter. Make no mistake, high Oil prices are helping some segments of your economy. I honestly do not believe this is why America has not gone all in - But never forget, in times of Flux, there's always someone still winning. And the Boards of Chevron and ExxonMobil have a lot more ability to whisper into Congressional Earholes than a few Ukrainian Refugees do.
It's not THE reason, but it's a reason.
Another thing is - The Invasion of Afghanistan cost America's Federal Budget more than double that of all the Aid given to Ukraine so far, in terms of the percentage of the Budget. And Afghanistan diminished neither Russia or China. For half that cost the USA is crippling Russia for a generation. And China is realising it could not withstand these Sanctions. And so far, NATO hasn't committed a single Soldier. That's got to make a lot of other Countries what the hell happens when you do.
Again, not THE reason, but a reason.

Most Nato leaders certainly do NOT want Russia to win a complete victory. That has a lot of consequences that would be really bad for Nato countries, and to some extent the rest of the world.
But from a realpolitik point of view, there is not a lot to be gained for Nato countries from assisting Ukraine in crushing Russia on the battlefield. Not only does that come at an economic cost that is difficult to justify to their own populations, it also comes with a risk of destabilizing the global military landscape.
Realistically, there are no easy ends to this war as long as both the Ukrainian and Russian populations remain willing to continue the fight. Nato will provide enough equipment to make sure Kiev stays Ukrainian, but willingess to provide enough for Ukraine to maintain an advantage is far less certain. If Ukraine fights with the determination that Afghanistan has (against both the USSR and the US), I believe most of your territories will be returned. You should do a video talking about how the donations of weapons to Ukraine from the United States have stimulated the US’s weapons industry dramatically; like when Ukraine received HIMARS, and after the world saw how effective they were, Poland alone ordered 500 HIMARS for their own army. Basically, Ukraine is the ultimate weapons advertisement show, as live combat is showing the quality of US weapons and therefore generating huge revenue for the US. Not to mention that the US is, by proxy of Ukraine, dismembering the Russian military at no human life cost to themselves; Aka an excellent deal for the US.
This is important, since the U.S. is the most important ally to Ukraine and with the slow increase in support for ending Ukraine support, the Americans really need to see why it’s in their own interest to keep up support.

The first lots of ammunition and anti amour rockets we sent Ukraine were probably stocks that we the tax payers had bought and stored years ago and were due to be disposed of in the upcoming years. M113 armored personnel carriers were obsolete, the tracked HIMARS launchers were also on the way out of inventory. Keep in mind that for every Russian tank Ukraine destroys, that one less tank the US Army has to build. At the rate Russia is loosing military aircraft, the USAF may not need as many combat aircraft. Not to mention, US military contractors are getting additional orders from other countries which keeps production lines going and allows US taxpayers to save by lowering overall equipment costs. If West did not want Ukraine to win? Best thing would be to do nothing! Doing nothing costs West 0 dollars and requires for them to not lift a finger!
But instead West took millions and millions of Ukrainian refugees (my family also houses and gives work to one family and their friends) and sent billions on top of billions of dollars of aid in humanitarian and lethal aid to Ukraine, many Western volunteers also went to help in humanitarian and military efforts, West also trains tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers (I saw a team of them being trained to operate Leopards in my brigade during my service), made Russia the most sanctioned country on the planet and provides intelligence for Ukraine! These are the things I know about! Who knows what other forms of aid are provided!
Everything short of full military intervention have been provided for Ukraine! It shows in results too!
Russias "military operation" narrative is crushed in all but Putins fantasy world! Russia lost its claims near Kyiv, lost claims near Kharkiv, lost Kherson and claims North of it and are now slowly but surely losing the defense line they prepared a year preparing in the Southern part of occupied zones!
Russia is begging countries like North Korea, Iran and China for aid in stuff as basic as artillery shells! One would think Russia would prepare a massive stockpile of those if the plan was for an extended war! Ukraine did not have the luxury of preparing for this war! Ukraine was a poor country with not enough money to prepare for a large conventional war!
Russia has been running the war largely with pre-war stocks! They have not yet had to start crafting and paying for everything from small arms ammunition to Jets!
The war has been following this trend of Russian strenght slowly diminishing and their claims in Ukraine being taken away despite their best efforts to resist! Meanwhile Ukraine has only grown in strenght!
I do not see how Ukraine could lose the war at this point!
The fighting is on a way smaller frontline, Russian professional army got mauled before Ukraine even had modern tanks or HIMARS, initiative is firmly in Ukraines grasp and they are advancing daily!

@@yuriyseliuk4120 Its hard to say how the war will end because its war and unpredictable! Anything could happen! But if this current trend continues like it most likely will if not tipping to being more favorable for Ukraine? Ukraine will 100% survive and will 100% WIN! Win as in FORCE Russians out of the country or force them to die!
Ukraine already has access to Black Sea through Odesa and is making daily progress towards Sea of Azov! If that advance continues? They will eventually reach the shore and cut off any railway to the Southern part of the front!
Russia already stopped using commercial ships to supply the Southern part of occupied zones due to one of them being struck by drone boats and put out of service! Kerch bridge is damaged as we speak by missiles and drone boats including the railway on it and will likely be damaged further in the future!
Only reliable way to supply the South aka. Any claims of Russia that have shoreline with Black Sea? Is through railways going through the region that Ukraine is constantly advancing in with the specific goal in mind to cut those railways!
Sending 8-16 HIMARS had enough effect to make Russians stop concentrating ammunition stockpiles after dozens of them got blown up which makes it harder to supply big artillery concentrations! Might be thats part of the reason that Russians use 1/4th of the artillery they used to use in first year of the war, made Russians move their airforce back after multiple airfields got hit and many planes got destroyed on the ground and destroyed many Russian command posts forcing them to be moved further back! Even that does not seem to be enough now that Ukraine has Storm shadow missiles! Recently a command post in Sevastopol got hit resulting in death or wounding of 30 Russian commanders! Even if Russian Admiral survived? Thats still 30 commanders killed or wounded! Russians are not safe anywhere in the occupied zones!
West has provided way more than 14 tanks at this point! Maybe 14 of the most modern and most famous have been provided like Leopards, Challengers or M1 Abrams! But hundreds on top of hundreds of tanks that Ukraine knows how to operate without training from the West has been provided! America and Britain toured countries that had old Soviet tanks and purchased them to send to Ukraine! They went to Africa, Middle East, Balkans and likely many others to buy their Soviet stocks so they could help Ukraine to get weapons they knew how to use!
Its only recently when Ukrainians have been trained to use Western tanks that Western tanks are starting to be provided!
While that number is not enough? Ukraine is receiving more and more and more all the time! Thats the miracle of being supported by more than 45 countries including top countries like US, Germany, Britain, France, Poland and many others!
I would feel awful if my house is on fire and my neighbor has a hydrant but gives just a couple buckets! But right now those couple buckets are what is not only containing the fire but slowly extinguishing it! Those couple buckets are what Ukraine itself has asked for and what they have used to so far not only survive but turn the tide of the fight!
More could always be sent but you gotta understand that Ukraine is not in NATO! Ukraine is not in EU! All of this aid is being given to a country that others have no obligation to help! How would you feel if you are asked out of nowhere to give alot of your stuff to a country that you got no pre-existing deals to help? All of this aid is being given largely based on what Ukraine has asked for! And so far? It has been extremely effective!
Sanctions to Russia are focused on harming its war industry and economy by preventing them access to items such as microchips used to craft weapons such as missiles and military grade computers!
In November 21st 2022 a single US dollar was worth 59 Russian Rubles!
Just recently in beginning if October 2023? Russian ruble broke the 100 mark!
One US dollar is now worth over 100 rubles and the trend has continued constantly with little change since 2022!
Exports to Russia might grow! But it will difficult for them to have a long term war if they are not able to design new weapons in large enough scale to defeat the weapons provided to Ukraine by most of the worlds leading military powers! Especially if their currency is constantly losing value!
No sanction is gonna topple a country! Just look at North Korea!
But what sanctions do is take certain options from the table from a country!
Say Russia not being able to wage a war that costs them by some estimates 1 billion US dollars every day! Imagine that in rubles!
Not being able to uphold a military large enough to defeat or even resist a country supported by half the damn globe while manufacturing weapons of its own after pre-war stocks uninevitably run out!
Russia is a massive country with a massive army! That will have its effects! Survival of Ukraine from the first year of war is a miracle in itself!
That was back when the sheer scale of foreign aid had least effect because it did not yet get to speed!
Now that aid is in motion, West is focused on the situation and Ukraine is armed to the teeth!
There is no realistic way in which Russia is able to sustain fighting this violent and expensive while large part of their war chest was captured and frozen in first day of the war in foreign banks, large part of the professional army they had was destroyed and pushed back without any realistic advantages for long term war being gained and now large part of the pre-war equipment either having been destroyed, used or captured by Ukraine!
The longer this war goes on? More blood Russia will have to bleed! More money they have to expend in increasing amounts due to inflation and more stronger Ukraine gets!
I have paid attention to this war since the first day and it has been continuous trend of Ukraine getting stronger and smarter while Russia gets weaker in comparison and seems to not learn from their mistakes!
War will not end soon purely because of the fact that Russia had a large army with deep pockets when it comes to equipment! But it will only get more painful to them from this point!
There is two ways Russia would not lose!
Either Ukrainian resolve breaks? Or then Russia uses nukes!
First seems impossible since a Gallup done in October 2022 says that over 91% of Ukrainians want to fight until all occupied territories including Crimea are reclaimed and Russia is DEFEATED! 26% say they want Ukraine to take back its land including Crimea and then negotiate with Russia!
Less than 10% seems interested in any ending that seems to favor Russia!
This can change of course but so far Ukrainians are putting up a fight that is pushing the Russians back daily!
As far as Ukrainians economy goes? Its fucked! Absolutely! But its best to be fucked economically rather than physically by an occupier! Ukraine will be rebuilt in any case! Most likely with massive amounts of funding from around the world!
This war is without a doubt the most broadcasted and most one sided when it comes to narrative!
Even Russias allys are hesitant to take Russias side because of how bastardly the Russians have conducted themselves! Especially after mass graves and proof of mistreatment of civilians and POWs have been discovered and videos of those events have been recorded by Russian soldiers themselves!
Russia is the number 1 enemy in the world right now! Hence why they are the most sanctioned and why so many are supporting Ukraine

Ukrainians were very peaceful people before 2022. We believed if we wouldn't threaten anyone, no one would threaten us. Even after 2014 most of the society couldn't believe Putin would start the war (including me). Indeed, why would anyone want to start the war?
In 1994 we gave up the third in the world nuclear arsenal in exchange of vague promises of help and support. Again, we were pacifists. Almost no one could believe our "brothers" would want to attack us. The few "believers" were considered freaks. Several years later Russia has bought up many our weapons as energy debts repayments. Some of the missiles we are currently bombarded with were in fact sold to Russia by Ukraine.
In addition to this, after 2014 there were mysterious fires in the ammunition depots in Ukraine...
Next, according to the Minsk Treaty we were not allowed to buy weapons, while Russia was buying high tech weapons components in western countries (like tank sights from France) through corruption schemes.
And still most of us remained pacifists. One of the reasons Zelensky was elected was his promise to end the war in Donbass (created and sponsored by Russia) by coming to an agreement with Putin. It turned out that the terms of the agreement were to give autonomy to the Donbass region and in this way to give them legal rights to influence all Ukrainian political decisions. That was unacceptable, so the war started.
Yes, now we are beggars and our pacifistic illusions cost us dearly.
P.S. Buying up our weapons is not the only way Russia was preparing for the attack. The other ways include propaganda, bribing and recruiting of politicians, officials and defence plants directors (Motor Sich Plant), bloggers and mass media. "Svoboda" political party considered as radical nationalists was sponsored by Russia. It's goal was "rocking the boat" of the Ukrainian society. However , it didn't have much support and after rising the entry barrier in 2014 didn't enter the parliament.
That was almost a miracle we were able to withstand the attack in the first months of the war. As someone said "There should be movies about our resistance. People cut down trees to block roads, set tank columns on fire, chased runaway occupants in forests. Young guys, men, grandpas..."

Great video covering the topic and the real issues involved! Too many take a simplistic analysis rather than actually addressing the issues. The primary question is what does victory look like in this war?
For Ukraine, the answer is a total victory over Russia, retaking all their territories.
For the West, the answer is undefined. Biden for example has given nebulous statements for what is a victory.
If we consider the situation at the beginning of the war, the fact that Ukraine survived as a state and has pushed Russia back to the eastern part of the country would be considered as a massive victory.
If we consider the current status quo and consider Ukraine to be a military and economic equal to Russia, then victory look more like kicking Russia out completely.
The Ukrainian offensive has shown that for a total territorial victory is unlikely in the short term. Either the West will have to significantly increase aid to Ukraine for the long term, negotiate a long term settlement, or negotiate a ceasefire, turning it into a frozen conflict.
There is a real risk of escalation in this conflict, even if you think it’s a small risk it’s one the West has to navigate.
The last big issue is the US needs to pivot to deterring war between China and Taiwan.

China is dependant on importing it's energy and food. Over 80% is via shipping that goes past Western ally nations. The West including the Philippines, Japan, Australia, the US can shut down imports into China and grind it to a halt and send it back a decade without firing a drone. I expect that this would lead to Chinese retaliation which would cause insurance for shipping goods to become so expensive few ships would sail to China even without the blockade. Taiwan is harder to invade than the UK. No nation other than the US is capable of invading the UK so the idea that Taiwan is incredibly vulnerable isn't true if we are willing to commit to its defence and to blockading ships inbound to China. We don't need to pivot to Asia. China is collapsing and it's population is set to halve this century and it's economy is dealing with massive debt and citizens who don't trust their government.

Not sure why the US will not give Ukraine the M1128 Mobile Gun System. That is basically a Stryker with a turret that has a 105mm gun. The US Army has turned them all in and they will be replaced with the new M10 light tank.
The US Army had 142 of the M1128 which have , I assume been put into storage. The US military will never use these mobile gun systems - so I do not see why they can’t be given to Ukraine - the storing of these items just costs the US money. These are not a tank replacement but they are good at attacking bunkers which is just what they have to do to retake the parts of Ukraine that Russia is occupying.

just like many people thought putin was this brilliant mastermind who always had a deeper plan and every apparent defeat was part of a calculated gamble, no, he's a megalomaniac old dude who thought nobody would dare stand up to the russian army.
in the same way, our leaders are unlikely to be brilliant geniuses that could get ukraine to win, but choose not to because of some cold calculus. no, they got in charge through a popularity contest where the winner is the one who can pin more screw-ups on his rivals than his rivals can pin on him. they want to keep their advantage in this popularity contest by appeasing different sides of the electorate. many of them are out of their depths and afraid. many simply have no balls, no spine; having a spine push you to take risks, if you risk you will screw up sometimes, and it will be used by your opponents against you. if you risked three times, and twice it paid off, and once it went poorly, it may be good for the country, but for your popularity it will be a net loss.
our leaders don't have a grand master plan to bleed russia as much as possible by fine-tuning the help to ukraie to just enough that russia can keep fighting if it makes more sacrifices. no, they are acommittee of scared, confused men who are trying to minimize their potential losses.

the US hasn't directly aided a belligerent against russia since Afghanistan and then it was just stinger missiles and little more so as to mitigate directly antagonizing a nuclear rival. what aid has been given by the US is frankly astonishing in speed and generosity relative to history. viewing the aid relative to Ukraine's stated needs is the wrong way to view this and sets an expectation that is unrealistic when considered next to past instances of US direct military aid to foreign countries, short of "lend-lease" that is, and the current conflict is not on the scale of ww2 presently.
the US has never stated it would provide an entire military for ukraine, it's foolish to expect it, and its foolish for the US citizenry to allow it. for its not on America's doorstep Russia lands on if Ukraine falls. ergo the European nations that barely or not at all met their UN military contribution percentages have to show some personal fortitude and make a decision to ensure Ukraine repels russia or let their borders be the next to be infringed upon. distaste for conflict does not absolve the possibility of conflict coming to you.
this is not a case of "passing the buck" as it is reasonably dubious as to the "buck" being the responsibility of the US to begin with.
frankly; the russian incursion into ukraine is the fault of russian backwardsness and almost equally the fault of Russia's western neighbors to form a better diplomatic relationship with russia after the fall of the USSR. this was foolish on a monumental level.

Complex topic, and I don't think there's one answer to the title question. But even at the start I noticed a certain kind of narrative from the naturally worked up Ukrainian diplomat in my country that I thought was a bit unfortunate. I won't get into details, but there are narratives that I'm convinced work, and others less so. You might think that childishness can't possibly have any bearing on such a grave concern, but you'd be wrong.
I think Ukraine should repress any hint of being entitled or miffed, even if they have that right in many ways (EG the 94 denuclearization treaty). Better then to help the west come to the realization "by itself" that it has little choice and that Ukraine holding the russians was a gift that is returned simply by it aligning with western interests.
russia (no typo) was already a problem before the invasion. A lot of movers and shakers know these things of course, but alas we're thankfully not living in autocracies. Every decision is bound to be a bumpy road, even the most obvious ones, even on a national level as we all probably know.
But on the new state budget in my country, Ukraine is closing in on the budget size for the entire social sector, so that's not nothing. We wouldn't have budgeted like this if the west was planning on abandoning Ukraine. Slava.

Before the invasion there was nothing special about Ukraine or Zelensky, not an expert but I believe the country was looked upon unfavorably because of rather hefty amount of ethnic based nationalism and the integration of former neo-Nazi groups into its military. Ukraine's current popularity could be looked upon as enemy of our enemy is a friend of convenience. Russia is worse so Ukraine is considered positive only in relation to Putin's Russia. With that in mind one can imagine that just enough aid being sent to bleed Russia dry.
In addition one cannot give Ukraine enough aid to outright win. Russia needs to be bled badly enough that Putin is removed internally and Russia decides to end the war. One does not push a nuclear power into a corner.
