Created as a companion video to my series of CARTOON EVOLUTION videos (specifically the one focusing on Hanna-Barbera's classic TV series, 'Evolution of SCOOBY-DOO & MYSTERY INCORPORATED Over 50 Years (1969-2019) Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers as I compare his official voice actors and live-action portrayals over time, including the likes of Casey Kasem, Matthew Lillard, Will Forte, Scott Innes, Billy West, Scott Menville, Nick Palatas and Iain Armitage.

Same Scott Innes did shaggy voice in the point and click scooby doo Computer games
I would say Billy West is tied with Scott for me, he sounds pretty close to Casey. Closer than Matthew (not a knock against Matthew though love him)

After Kasems retirement Matthew Lillard was honestly the best choice they could've made as a replacement. Maybe I'm biased since the two Live-Action Scooby movies he was in still stand as some of my favourite movies.
Scott Innes as Shaggy is also close to my heart, since I grew up on the movies he did.
Yeah all but Scott Menville awith the odd Scooby and Shaggy only series and the guy doing the most recent Movie are great, for the Cartoon versions. Even the guy Nick Palatas who did the two live TV Movies for Cartoon Network about how the gang got started were watchable. the Current 3D Movie is going to just make its money back and will be used more for merchandising of the characters.
I would argue Billy West would have been a great choice to bring back as Shaggy as well
No, I don't think you're biased on that. Let's be honest, if there was one thing from the original live-action movies, it was the fact that both Shaggy and Velma's actors were perfectly cast (I mean, Linda looks and even talks in a similar accent to Velma, and Matthew... well, let's just say that he was born to portray Shaggy, as well as voicing him, after the death of Kasem). Matthew will never beat Casey Kasem, but he does an incredible job voicing Shaggy, and I'm really sad that they did not ask him to reprise the roll in Scoob.

When I watched the live action movies I was thinking to myself Matthew Lillard must've called Casey Kasem and ask for help in doing Shaggy's voice, but he actually learned to do the voice by himself. I myself have learned how to do Shaggy's voice, but my Shaggy voice is similar to Matthew Lillard's and Nick Palatas'.

It’s just a movie and voice actor.
I really love Mathew Lillard's interpretation BECAUSE it's not an exact imitation. He manages to capture the essence of the character and keep him recognizable while still making him his own.
There really was no better person to be Kasem's successor.
Casey Kasem will always be Shaggy but, it really was a genius move to ask Matthew Lillard to take over after Kasem's retirement. I remember seeing Lillard in interviews when the live-action movie first came out talking about how he was determined to get the rhythm of Shaggy's voice right and had listened to hours upon hours of tapes to practice. So unusual to have an actor play a character in live-action and animation (especially a character he didn't originate). I just think it's really cool. 😎
He used to scream in his trailer/car to wear his voice out.
I don't think anyone has ever got a perfect impression of Casey Kasem but Matthew's voice is a great interpretation.

It’s impossible not to like a character like Shaggy Rogers. He’s so down to earth. He never puts on airs, and never says an unkind word about anyone.
Except the monsters
I don't think Lillard sounds so much like Kasem, but I do think he's the second best Shaggy, shining with energy and personality in his performance, and he definitely sounds the most stoned of all the voices :P
As a matter of fact Casey Kasem and Matthew Lillard are the two people that voiced Shaggy that people loved alot

As iconic as Casey Kasem and Matthew Lillard are, I think Scott Innes deserves an honorable mention for holding the fort down on both Shaggy and Scooby's voice in that weird transitional period between the late 90s and early 2000s. He reprised the characters for a Halifax ad in 2019, but that was the last time he did so from what I've seen. It's a shame.
I think they all did a great job. Some better than others, but I think it depends on what you first heard or grew up hearing.

the mystery inc series will always have a special place in my heart
Whenever I think of Shaggy, I will always hear Casey Kasem’s voice. Even in his later years, when his age began to show a bit in his voice, he always had that great comedic quality to it that made it so memorable. He could sound cowardly when he needed to, but he could also come across as caring for his friends when the situation called for it (especially in the later adaptations). Heck, even when Shaggy needed to be angry, Kasem could make it funny (his scene in Looney Tunes: Back in Action being a fantastic example).
Scott Innes actually did a very good impression of Kasem. Really, it’s amazing how well he was able to replicate the classic voice. West did a good impression too, but occasionally he does seem to slip into some of his other voices. It’s usually not a problem, but it can be a bit distracting at times.
Lillard doesn’t exactly sound like Kasem in the same way Innes does, but he does manage to capture all the necessary vocal mannerisms while doing his own thing. While I do still think of Kasem’s version as the definitive one, Lillard’s version is a nice alternative.
Menville’s probably the weakest of the voices here. From what I can tell, it seems like he’s doing an imitation that’s trying to sound like both Kasem’s version and Lillard’s version, which might be why it comes across as so forced. Ironically, Menville and Kasem have also shared another famous voice role: Robin, which is a better example of Menville’s voice talents.
Forte does sometimes capture the vocal mannerisms of the character, but he doesn’t pull them off nearly as well as Lillard and it often feels like a parody voice that you’d hear on a show like Robot Chicken. I’m sure Forte tried the best he could, but he just doesn’t manage to capture the spirit of the character in the same way Lillard does.

Casey Kasem and Matthew Lillard are the best voices for Shaggy
Much as I usually like Scott Menville as a voice actor, he's unfortunately not a good Shaggy. Doesn't help that he's in one of the least beloved Scooby series there is. Funny thing is, that wasn't even the only legacy Hanna Barbera character he did the voice of. He was Fred Flintstone at some point in the Flintstones Kids cartoon. I also love that Mathew Lillard from the live action movies was cast as the official cartoon character's voice. He has also played the character in a few Robot Chicken sketches that also used the live action movie's cast. Come to think of it, most of them became cartoon voice overs. Who can forget Linda as Wendy from Gravity Falls, and especially as Velma's rival, Hot Dog Water, in Mystery Inc as a nice little nod to the films. And Freddie as Kanan in Star Wars Rebels, with Sarah even getting a character as well.
Can't forget Scott Menville was also the voice of Red Herring in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo.

That's right, even though he isn't a legacy character. Also of note, Shaggy's not the only Casey Kasem voice Scott would later do the voice of. Casey also played Robin in a few series, including The New Scooby-Doo Movies. A role that Scott has played in both Teen Titans series.
Who else was waiting for the cameo scene in Looney Tunes: Back in Action, where Shaggy was in "discussion" with Lillard over his character portrayal? That was hilarious stuff!

casey is the classic OG, but you can hear him getting older in those later years of his career. i think matthew lillard recaptured his youth! scott innes also did an amazing job at sounding so much like casey.
To me Casey Casem is Shaggy! May he rest in peace.
Casey Kasem will always be the OG Shaggy, though his voice of him in the later half of 2000's you can understand why he retired. I thought that Billy West did a ok job voicing him while Scott Innes' was an improvement. Matthew Lillard was a perfect successor to Kasem. Hes's Shaggy was able to sound a lot like him. I have to give a pass on Menville's voice, only because he never really did sound like Shaggy but more like Robin.
Scott Innes was like my third favorite Shaggy. Matthew Lillard was the closest shaggy which made him second and for Casey Kasem you can't beat the original.

On another note, Scott Innes actually voiced Shaggy in a lot of the franchise's tie-in video games, commercials, and appearances on other shows as well.
I grew up with Cyberchase and Witch’s Ghost so Scott’s Shaggy brings up the most nostalgia.
I have just seen this. Im now looking forward to watching and celebrate the adventures (and voices) one of my favourite characters 😀

I grew up on Casey's Shaggy, so when Lillard got the role after the live action movies I was so happy because. In those movies he just embodied that Shaggy energy. My top two Shaggy voices for sure.
Casey voices Shaggy’s dad in Mystery Incorporated, and that’s such a touching detail.
Casey Kasem is still the best Shaggy, though Matthew Lillard is the best of the successors. Billy West and Scott Innes clearly tried to match him and almost had it, but both still came up short of having the right sound. Scott Menville's take felt like he was portraying his version of Robin just goofing around and trying to do a Shaggy impression, and, if you listen, you can actually hear a bit of his Robin slipping through. Nick Palatas' Shaggy is... okay. I kinda like his take, but it's just not my favorite. As for Will Forte (as well as my opinion of all the celeb replacement voices for Scoob): no, just no.

#1 Best: Casey Kasem 2:13: The one and ONLY Shaggy to me, there's no replacing him since he's the original and did it best. :)
2nd Best: Mathew Lillard 9:42: The newer Shaggy: He's pretty good, but I don't like how his voice is a little raspy as the voice, he's still great though and the voice is there. :) He'll never top Casey though. :) (I don't count the live-action movies though. I never really liked those. Sorry. XD )
3rd Best: Scott Innes 7:16 : He sounds pretty close to Casey more than Mathew I think, but I don't like how he doesn't put more emotion into his voice. :)
4th: Best Billy West: 7:07 He's pretty good too, but his voice is a little too nasilly sounding, the voice and accent are great and there though! :)
The WORST voices of him:
#1 WORST: Will Forte 13:22: (Yeah, he's awful. Okay, the voice is there, but he really doesn't have Shaggy's accent (What's with the off southern accent as him anyways?) and his voice is a little too deep.
#2 Worst: Scott Menville 8:02: Yup, he's awful. He sounds more like he's doing a Robin impression trying to imitate Shaggy than Shaggy himself. XD
#3 Worst: Nick Paletas 12:49: His voice and accent is there, but it's too deep and raspy sounding.
There's nothing about Will Forte's voice that sounds like Shaggy. Worst of the worst
I can get that about Nick but I never thought he was that bad. When those movies came out I was 10 and 11 and still heavily into scooby-doo. So it's kind of nostalgic for me. Although my boyfriend and I both think that Will Forte was not a good choice. Plus everyone says that my boyfriend looks like a real-life shaggy so he's kind of mastered the voice into something that I can describe as a mix between Kasem and Lillard.
I also never realized this but those were some bad wigs in the 2009 and 2010 TV movies.
I absolutely cannot stand will forte as shaggy. He’s trying to do a Matthew lillard impression, who in turn is doing a Casey Kasem interpretation. It’s bad. And they didn’t approach Matthew lillard, who would have made the movie way better

You can definitely tell as you listen that Casey was starting to sound older (obviously) and it sounds like an old man voice coming out of a teenage to 20 something character. Glad that he was able to play the role for the most part up until he chose to stop playing it. Also glad he stood by his right to not play the role for Burger King ads. Matthew Lollards much like Mindy Cohn should never have been replaced for things.
Thinking how you have done countdowns previously as part of your Cartoon Evolution series, I wonder if you could do a countdown of Shaggy and Scooby's disguises in the future. They must have had a few to their name! Thank you again for these awesome videos😁

Casey and Dick Clark, wolfman Jack are the 60s icon DJs and most recognized voices of all time
Obviously Casey Kasem is the best, nothing beats the original. But Matthew Lillard did shaggy justice. Those are the only two i can picture and hear when shaggy comes to mind.

I personally think casem and lillard are tied as my favorite...casem was the original and he started the foundation of shags voice, but i feel lillard potrays shaggys personality a lot better and so hes more convincing as shaggy

Casey in his prime can't be beat. However, Scott Innes' imitation sounds identical to Casey in his prime so he deserves just as much credit. The rest of them aren't that good at voicing Shaggy even though they're amazing VA's. We hear Lillard break character a few times which tells us he's not the flawless Shaggy everyone thinks he is. His live action variation he's okay though.
Matthew Lillard's a good Shaggy, but I wish Scott Innis was still voicing him since he's the closest to Casey Kasem. Please don't hate me.

Casey and Matthew are my favorites. Hearing Billy West’s interpretation just reminds me of his other character Roger Klotz with a Shaggyisms. And Scott’s it’s hard not to think of Robin from Teen Titans. They’re all good though, but can’t compete with the OG Shaggy.
Besides Casey and Mathew, Scott Innes and Billy West were pretty good too.

I didn’t know Matthew Lillard also voiced shaggy until recently so that’s a fun new fact to learn. He came on board not long before I stopped watching the channel scooby doo was shown on. Casey Kasem is the VA I grew up with as Shaggy.
