What a kind and lovely gift. Thank you, Robin - watching Squeak, who clearly loves her new toy, has brought a good deal of pleasure to followers of this channel, too.
@@catherinebreitfeller669 I know but still is cute as heck. I've had quite a variety of animals over my 65 years. All of them loved playing with toys and I loved watching them play or play with them. Thank you. I will eventually. Just a bad cold I got from my daughter who got it from her boyfriend.
What a lovely gift! I’ve never seen her so excited about a toy! Squeak has impressive porcupine manners when it comes to quills! She’s playing intensely and to her heart’s content, but still being so careful to tuck her tail in and not quill you guys as she bumps into you. I’m quite amazed.
remarkable behavior as she is the only one of them you've observed playing like this. will be interesting if and when she or one of the others brings another first year juvenile to see if the play behavior is replicated.
How adorable is Squeak, and thanks to Robin for sending her such a cute toy to bounce around with. It was very cute to see! You guys are so good to them, right after my own heart. How is Chonkers???? ❤❤❤🐾🐾❤❤😊
We haven't seen him again yet, but it's the slowest time of year for the porcupines to drop in. We saw a huge drop off in visits from January-February last year, so we aren't too worried yet. The adults have really cut back on their visits, and it's mostly the babies who've been showing up, especially the two youngest: Pip and Squeak (they're only about 5 months old and the babies are typically born between March and May, but they're both a lot bigger than the orphaned babies being wintered at the wildlife rehab). We're putting treats out for Chonkers at the end of the walkway in case he has any reservations about coming back to the door, but I think he's probably out looking for Spike.
I have always been interested in the fact that mammals engage in play, and for what ever reasons, but watching a porcupine playing, delighting in a toy (!), was something that was off my radar 😁
Do other animal groups not? Now that I am thinking about it, it is mostly mammals which I've seen playing. Thanks for pointing that out. It's a mammal thing! Oh no, birds too with people. I'm not sure about with other birds. I think birds do play, but I wonder if they do it when not in captivity.
@@shut-yuh-rass I have seen crows playing in pairs in Tokyo. They chase each other around in the sky and then land beside each other and rest. Parrots are very social and advanced tool users in the wild. So I think parrots also play.
@@ryuuguu01 Thanks for the info. How interesting. I know parrots do that with humans, but I haven't seen them play with each other, but I also think the same about them.
Annnd in THIS corner we have the legend - the wee Nova Scotia *Squeak Pine* taking *no enemies* as she immediately does a take down, a throw down, a squish & a squash (ohhh she loves her squash) ... yes this little feisty Canadian female should not be underestimated by her rather underweight size folks* !! 😆👏
The FIRST amazing video of 2025. You realize the zoological significance of the archive you're creating and the extraordinary footage you've assembled is exceptional. Right?
That's a neat thought. It would be great if there were scientific use. Documenting Squeak nursing from two different porcupines is quite noteworthy, I think. We did compile a TON of data on a large snapping turtle that used to live in the pond. Literature said they do not bask. We would regularly see him basking in the sun on one particular rock, so Forest Friend began documenting it. She has months and months of data showing they do in fact bask. Once a week for about 5-6 hours, pretty reliably that turtle would sit on his rock.
What a fantastic video! Squeak absolutely adores that present - hide it in case somebody takes it away, wipe the floor with it, and trundle around like a happy engine. She really is adorable when she's being a good girl. Such a pity the quills prevent you giving her a cuddle.
Joel and Forest Friend, Oh my gosh, I'm so happy that she loves it!! This made me cry! Thank you guys so, so much for the video, it couldn't be sweeter and I really appreciate it!! (Looks like the toy didn't suffer from sitting at the US-Canadian border for 6 weeks, ha) Take care there all of you!!
@@robinellison Is there a name you'd like us to call the toy by? I have a feeling I'll be using it a LOT to distract Squeak when she's about to venture into forbidden areas. No rush, I can call it "your toy" in the meantime.
@@Forest_Friend Ohh, hmm, let me think. Well I think "Quilly" would be cute, and "Clover'. Maybe "Herbie" for herbivore, ha, or "Berry" or "Willow." I don't know... I would say just go with whatever name you think Squeak would like, since you may be using it a lot!!. :) Thanks very much for asking though, will be fun to see if she keeps responding so happily to the toy. Thanks Forest Friend!!

Gosh, is that stuffie stuffed with the porcupine equivalent of catnip? She's so excited about it!
I think it's just a stuffie. She likes playing with them.
I was wondering, do porcupines have quills primarily on the hind quarters or do they have quills all over? Its hard to tell with so much fur!
They have quills all over, but most of the big ones are on their tails and their back above their tails. There are smaller ones on the rest of their back and on their heads. Their legs don't really have quills, and their bellies don't have quills either.
