I've seen some really negative comments against Derek, and like you and many others, I love hearing his stories, and memories. He knows his stuff, I don't care what others say, and I'm sure Derek doesn't either. He's a joy to watch and listen to 😊
During the 1980s, we had a 105L then a 120L in our household. Great cars, comfortable over a long journey with a huge boot in the front. Economy was between 40 and 45 mpg with the added bonus of being able to remove the rear bench to use as a picnic seat!
The Favorit was definitely the last 'true' Skoda. Design started in 1985 and using Skoda's own engine and transmission. The Volkswagen influence didn't come about until 1994 with its replacement, the Felicia.
I had one in pistachio green in the late seventies. Got hit in the back by an Alfa Sud. Destroyed the Alfa Sud and dented the back panel of the Skoda. My wife has driven a Skoda for 15 years and I'm in the process of buying another
'Mr & Mrs Nutter'. 😂 These were great old things really - a bit dicey in the wet if you couldn't drive for toffee but the later ones with the revised rear suspension (Rapid Coupe) drove very well. They were so incredibly cheap yet as sturdy as anything, and reliable. It's nice to see one in this condition.
He's right, i remember folks who had 70's / 80's Skodas and rated the great VFM ; the Rapide was the "poor man's Porsche", quite a roarty old thing. Didn't Hitler invade Czechoslovakia for the Skoda works as it was so advanced?
Great story, Skoda was the butt of many jokes but other than rust they were very reliable and gave the less well off working man an affordable car. They came into the Uk as deck cargo, so little wonder that they suffered from corrosion. A rare mint sample that should do well.
Only problem these had was with overheating many got scrapped because of this because the cast iron head would crack and the block being alloy would suffer with the wet liners dropping so they got scrapped
Skoda? Engineers? My parents bought a 110L brand new in 1974. Within 40k miles - all engine liners replaced, one rear swing axle had sheered off, gearbox linkage seized, severe rust on every panel except the roof (could teach Lancia about rot). From new, impossible to reverse up hill with more than two occupants. Deadly in the wet. Scrapped in 1978.
Apparently, VW bought Skoda due to the highest brand loyalty. People would buy Skoda after Skoda. But having heard Derek’s story, more reasons. I used to know a VW dealer and they gave them Skoda instead due to a quiet location. He said people never bring Skodas back, whereas VWs they were constantly bringing them in for niggles and quality issues. He surmised that if you work in a German car factory you are a manual worker and don’t care as much. Whereas in Czech Republic you built a car with pride
Skoda had their own facility at King's Lynn where all cars went through a process where everything was checked and any rectification dealt with before they went to dealers
A proper Skoda 👍
I watch these for Derek's stories
Me too, they’re my favourite bits
I agree, his memories are priceless.
Same x

I had a yellow S110R and thought it was a wonderful car. So very rare now as I would love another one.

Old Derek likes a story, he could write a humorous book that boy.
I had a yellow/brown 105s on a X Plate. paid £40 for it.
Please Please DEREK GET SOMEONE TO TURN THAT GOD DAMN MUSIC OFF WE LIKE TO LISTEN TO YOU BUT CAN'T HEAR YOU ON MOST VIDEOS
Had a Y reg one back in my student days. Dirt cheap to run, just worked.
I hope the spare wheel is well greased or it will be very hard to come out from underneath the front end
