  • Heya, Rita aka Fàn Lǎoshī is here! Remember I interviewed this British med student Will Hart (space.bilibili.com/1585547864...) who had only learned Chinese for 1.5 years when we did this full-Chinese interview but he already spoke and talked about everything like a Chinese native back then!
    In part 1: • He SELF STUDIED Native... , Will shared his learning process with massive input plus some useful tools without a textbook and a teacher.
    In the second half of our interview, we dive in:
    0:00 How to train yourself to think in Chinese without translating
    8:01 Will’s future learning plan
    10:25 What “native-level” even means
    14:11 Will’s learning tips for Chinese learners
    If you don't have a whole year and a half (more importantly, 4 - 8 hours per day) to dedicate to Chinese learning, or you have no idea where to start your journey of Chinese learning, join my Chinese pronunciation training program “FINDING YOUR MANDARIN VOICE” today, (re)form the best possible habits for your spoken Mandarin in 3 months!

    I also did this. After 6 months I began to form my thoughts in Chinese and restrict any other language. Any important word I would encounter during the day(in my native language) would immediately look up the Chinese definition. Learned very fast.

      Don't feel discouraged! Everyone will learn in their own time. This is a young man going to med school so we should assume he is pretty intelligent. He also sounds like he did a lot of learning during lock downs and has many Chinese friends which is fantastic for him but other people might not be as fortunate. You can be this level one day too, don't give up!

      I have exactly the same feeling when watching this guy 😂 Both motivated and depressed at the same time, haha! He did amazing job no doubt. The only thing comforting me is that maybe putting so much emphasis on practical knowledge have hindered writing/reading skills. 🤔

    I'd rather learn Chinese from him than a native speaker, as he'd be able to explain and demonstrate in plain English exactly how to pronounce the tones when speaking spontaneously and quickly. It's the same way that someone who's learnt English as a second language would do a better job of explaining how to pronounce the 'th' sound in English than me, as I just make the sound organically without thinking about it. He should start his own Chinese teaching business and call it 'Laowai-Chinese' or something.

      Hi thanks for your comment. I think Will would be a great teacher, but I'd say the problem is not about being native or non-native. There are a bunch of native Chinese teachers who don't have a fundamental knowledge of the Chinese language(s) while "teaching" Chinese out there, and there also are some non-native Chinese language teachers who can't speak Chinese very well while trying to sell courses. At the same time, there are great native Chinese teachers who dedicate their years or decades of time to this job and can help Mandarin learners improve their language ability as quickly as possible. That being said, if Will were to want to teach Chinese in the future, I'd be thrilled to have such a great fellow Chinese teacher, because I know that students would be in good hands.

    • @RitaChinese
      @RitaChinese  2 роки тому +3

      I think it just shows the possibility of how "fast" an English native speaker who got good resources, tools, methods, and people (plus time which might be so limited for most people) could master Mandarin Chinese! But everyone has their own path to enjoy the journey of learning a language😊

      In all fairness, unless we speak Chinese, we don't know how good he is. We just get a feeling that he is fluent, because there are not a lot of pauses in his speech and with Rita's praise it also influences our perception of his fluency. I wouldn't compare your abilities to his. We all have different advantages and disadvantages. Find out what your advantages are and exploit them.
