- Joseph Gilgun is interviewed for his new Sky One show Brassic where he plays Vinnie opposite Michelle Keegan and Damien Malony.
Please note this interview contains a lot of swearing.
He talks to Rich Phippen about the creative journey he went on, and how much of his life went into the series. We go on the creative process, through the jumble of ideas, to the writers he worked with, to the finished stories. There is mention of the influence of Shane Meadows, and how their relationship grew over the years, and what he learned from him.
It's a fascinating and candid look into TV production, and the lessons learned when you're thrown in at the deep end.
Plot: Vinnie (Gilgun), a Lancashire lad with bipolar disorder, and Dylan (Molony), his razor-smart best mate, are inseparable and utterly co-dependant. They’ve hardly spent a day apart since birth. But Dylan’s girlfriend Erin (Keegan) might just shake things up for good with her plans to leave town and start a new life for herself and her kid, Tyler.

This man is one of the most underrated talents in britain for me! Fantastic in getting people to care about rudy in misfits, to this is england and now co created one of my favourite shows in brassic! Brilliant actor brilliant mind!

Playing Rudy 1,2 and 3 showed pure talent, I was in awe of him in misfits, absolutely amazing acting skills x

Had the pleasure of meeting Joe a few times but the first time meeting him we got talking about me having a bad knee and I bumped into him months after and he asked how my knee was..such a nice genuine down to earth guy

Always thought Joe's been a cracking actor but with this series and hearing him speak he's become such an inspiration to me. I grew up in the next town over from Chorley and had friends from there so knocked about round there myself so I can actually imagine him getting up to havoc on those streets haha. I'm only 26 so if I'd been a decade older I'd probably have known who he was back then. Brassic is such a great representation because I'm still struggling to hustle by but hanging onto and getting up to mischief with that group of mates you've been through everything with. When he says it's not the place, it's the people that really resonated with me because that's something I always say about the area. Run down shit hole with no opportunities but I've moved away and moved back again because of how friendly people are up in the North and the friendships I truly cherish are here. I'm lucky enough to not have dyslexia but I have always struggled with adhd and the jumbled thoughts that never slow down, as well as losing my mother who had bi polar and a drinking problem. I've always been told I won't achieve anything because I don't do well in formal education but like Joe I don't feel like I'm stupid but other people do a good job of making you question your own judgement. I love the mix the of side splitting humour but being able to touch on important and sensitive issues. Keep up the great work Joe, you're probably helping way more people than you'll ever know!

Daughter goes there now.. we love the place fell in love with it strait away I’m never going back to Manchester. Chorley is home I felt settled on day 2 x

Joe, I have lived your life with regards to having dyslexia and leaving school without any qualifications coming from council estate. However, it took until I was 35 before I believed in myself and went for what I wanted. You’re not thick or stupid just look at what you have achieved. You are brilliant, funny and intelligent. Binge watched this brilliant show today and then found the twoshotpod with joe being brutally honest about his mental health and i find him so interesting and down to earth and for such a well known actor thats such a breath of fresh air and so commendable. Keep being you joe you are fantastic

I grew up in a middle class family and know a lot of middle class folk and a lot of working class folk and with a very few exceptions I would rather spend my time with working class folk. Salt of the earth, friendly, welcoming and good natured.

What a talented bloke, one of my favourite actors, and after loving the hell out of Brassic, perhaps one of my favourite creatives (idk how much writing he actually did) too.

Went to a party with Joe when he was 16, everyone fell asleep after smoking a few fat-ones. I found a huge roll of gaffer tape and taped everyone together, to the floor, to the furniture etc and then sneaked out without anyone waking up haha! Good ol' Chorley!
