(Alena) I wanted to clear something up that I wasn’t able to articulate well in this video.
I am often asked if I am African, to which I always reply “YES, Why of course! I am a descendant of the slave trade.” The reaction I get is usually, “Oh ok so - you’re African AMERICAN.” And that always left me feeling a bit less African than those people who were born and raised on the continent. That left me to adopt the saying of “I’m African first and American second”, to let people know even though I wasn’t born there, nor my parents, nor my grandparents I still felt a strong sense of connection to Africa as a whole, and that whatever my ancestors had in them still lived in me.
Let me put it like this, as African people from many countries who were enslaved and brought to America, we had to overcome many trials and tribulations. I believe God was with us as he walked us into this new land. Yes, we walked into it as slaves but we stayed in it as one of the most influential cultures in the world, BLACK AMERICANS. We developed into our own distinct people, with our own genres of music, rap, r&b, dance, hair, food, and many things that are loved and treasured all around the globe. Our African culture was not only restored, but re-birthed and given a new life all of its own.
I thank God that he is near to us because his word is hidden on our hearts. That when we face all kinds of fears, trauma, and rejections, He is there to restore and renew us. And that with every ugly & difficult situation we go through, we are just coming out better and better, more and more like Christ, more and more patient, more and more compassionate, more and more humble, and less and less pride.
    Philippians 2: 1-4
“So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

I feel the same way!! My family came to United States via Panama, but we are descendants of slaves brought there by the Spaniards via Portugal. When I went to South Africa I felt something deep! I’m sure a place like Uganda and other Western countries on the continent would have me crying like you…I felt closer to my origin…it’s a feeling that just runs deep ❤

As someone who stayed in Bali for 30 days. I think once you leave the United States you identify what fresh food really is and that people are so humble. I lived so well in Bali my skin was glowing and it was so affordable. The same I can tell with your family in Africa. You guys all were glowing, the kids look great. Alena and Joe were glowing and the food you guys ate Wow ! It’s just a different lifestyle. Praying, like I am for myself that we can leave the rat race and enjoy the years God has for us until we go home. Enjoying fresh food, affordable clothes, free childcare, $20 hair salons, massages, and a calm lifestyle free from hate. Sending you guys positivity thank you for sharing.

It’s unfortunate that the food, clothes, entertainment, salons and everything else you find affordable is actually not affordable to us residents of Africa and not all of us have access to those things. But I’m glad you enjoyed Bali.

I grow my own fruits in my garden. I think the fruits I grow here(usa, Georgia ) taste better than the foods I grew in my garden in my home country even though the soil is better there. I think my body likes American fake fruit better. 😭😭

Thank you for branding my country so well and baring our flag in such a positive manner. Many people visit Uganda and speak so badly of the country, it's even worse coming from ugandans in the Diaspora, it really makes me very sad. Uganda isn't a perfect country but it's so beautiful especially the country side is so blessed naturely. I have been so fortunate to have parents from both Uganda and Rwanda and I have travelled th country abit so I got to experience beauty, however I am also born and raised in the capital city Kampala so I have seen rich neighbourhoods and slams too.Am so grateful for my country because I didn't apreciate it as much when I lived there and being in Germany has shown me what a rich country Uganda is when it comes to culture and natural resources plus the fresh food and friendliest people in the world. Thanks fir reminding me about this through your videos I have smiled, cried, laughed and felt so home sick too but happy you shared so much great staff about my country and may the good Lord bless you. Shalom from Stuttgart Germany

Talking about Caesarean Sections, did you know that this form of child delivery was invented in Uganda and introduced to the world saving many women and children's lives that would have been lost at child birth? Nobody else was crazy enough to think of it as a solution, in critical situations during child delivery :))) Great stuff as always. Peace and love

Alena, u r really awesome! U r so open to lifes different experiences, which unite us all. Yr rearing yr kids 2 b so comfortable & confident in their own African-Korean-US skin! They r so secure of their identity & rightful place in the world. I was not. My parents had 2 flee Uganda bc of Idi Amin/Obote. So Im lost generation of diaspora in West. Brought up on fear of civil war & Aids. I tried 2 relocate in 2000-1 but found it 2 difficult 2 assimilate on so many levels: complicated family feuds over land & property. I was so naive! Mine is a familiar diaspora story. Even though I looked the same, I felt I didnt belong. I even tried 2 learn Luganda! But we did bury our late parents there. So I have bitter-sweet tears running down my Bugandan face as I watch yr family enjoy best parts of Uganda: The Pearl of Africa & Source of the Nile on the Equator. Its a beautiful & rich country. So fertile. Has everything: coffee, oil, minerals, fruit, mountains, waterfalls, Safari-tourism including gorillas! It was even offered 2 Jews after WW1 as viable colonial-settler home 4 Israel! Can u imagine?! (watching genocide in Gaza). Please buy a 2nd home holiday house 4 yr family in Uganda & promote her unique treasures. Has so much potential as the Garden & Breadbasket of Africa. We r also a v gdlooking race! In nicest way, Im super jealous of y'all. Done us v proud. God bless u, Rovianne x

I loved your takeaways throughout and spiritual nugget at the end! Alena and Joe have passed on their easygoing sense of exploration to their kids--they seem generally content in new surroundings and in each other's company, without a whole lot of entertainment (screens). I look forward to visiting a country in Africa (or even relocating) someday!!

I am Ugandan and moved to the USA at least five years ago but I miss my family, the hospitality of other Ugandans, the weather, the food like pasted ground nuts, avocado, Ugandan yams , real pork that tastes like pork, etc... and Munanansi(pineapple juice mixed with ginger). I wish you guys tried munanansi. May God forgive us all through Jesus Christ our Lord and savior
