Very interesting. Thanks Kris..
Glad you enjoyed it
Wonderful episode helping us understand how to manage dealing with stressful situations and not giving up! Thanks Kris.
You are very welcome, Ashish
From what I hear from this episode, perception is key! Managing that is very important to ensuring that you someone's comment or belief doesn't derail your growth within the firm. Thanks for this FC.
Well said!
Nice content, I believe day is not far when you will have million subscribers.
Thank you, Dineshwer. It is very kind of you to say
We hope you will enjoy the "How to Handle Up Or Out Policy at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain" episode. Let us know what you think and what future topics you recommend we cover in the upcoming episodes for this series.
Thank you for the tips. When working on your brand how do you avoid from looking like you’re only in it for yourself?
Hi Peter, I think it starts with having a mission in life, having intention to make a positive impact in the world. Then everything you do will have that intention at it's core. And it is impossible for that not to show through.
interesting to know more about Up or Out Policy from Top MBB firms! I enjoy the 2 key questions how Up and Out Policy built a simple question of 'Is this person a partner material?'. Key takeaways for me here is really building that personal branding in which whatever i say maybe written in New York Times. The other part that i like is the scenario on these informal/formal on how to handle it - despite challenges and being ranked by your senior to you peers, you still have to show that you a team player. I really like this episode!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks to Kris and to the Firmsconsulting for a very nice video. Good guidance on the subtle weakness that I have been struggling to defeat for all of my life. One question Kris, do you think these tactics and strategies are culture dependent?
So to define "culture dependent" I mean culture of organization and the country where you are working as a professional. I am asking since the things you are talking about are useful not only in management consulting environment, but also in other professional environments. I am asking for two specific reasons, for example some countries value team players more than survival of fittest and strongest, but several others value fittest and strongest more than team players. My assumption is that since you have had large pool of clients from different geographies these strategies you have suggested are "generalized" strategies based on the data analysis of your interactions.
Hi Bashir, You are very welcome. Yes, these strategies are generalized. However, of course, it is important to use common sense and make adjustments to your particular environment.
Hi, Kris! Loved that you addressed this topic. Do you happen to have a resource that gives example of the ideal ways one can help a team excel and still stand out, for newcomers?
Hi Joe, Glad you liked it. Take a look at other videos I posted recently. This is one of the videos that can be helpful ua-cam.com/video/TeVt5UigLhg/v-deo.html
Very well structured . Can i know in which office did you work and for how long as a consultant ?
Thank you, Aditya. Sure. You can learn more about my background here www.linkedin.com/in/kristinasafarova/
Thank you!
It gave me a more pinpoint insight in my past mistakes and why I am doing much better now.
Edit:
(As a tax consultant)
Glad it was helpful! And thrilled to hear your career is progressing better now.
Like you, as I was listening to the episode, I was thinking about my past roles as well! And I must say I echo the same sentiment.
It sounds like psychopaths, who are manuplative and self centered would do well in consultancy. Btw, the comment is not directed to you personally as a matter of fact, I find your explanation very kind and useful.
Hi Sina, Thank you for your comment. The thing is consulting firms have to be like this because they have to promote only people who can perform at the next level. Companies pay consulting firms millions of dollars for their advice and help, companies also hire consulting firms to solve very challenging problems, so consulting firms have to make sure that they only promote people who can serve in a more senior role. And if someone is managed out it is usually done in a respectful and supporting manner and outside world does not know that a particular person was managed out. In fact, firms provide a lot of help to ensure a person they are managing out has good exit opportunities. So overall I think consulting is a good environment, especially compared to my experience working in banking.
Thank you for the helpful content Kris! I will be joining an MBB firm as a graduate consultant in Sep, and I was wondering how a junior team member like me should shape his relationship with the firm's senior partners, as one needs to convey potential and eagerness to succeed, maintain a both-way respectful relationship, and create a strong image. Would be great to hear your thoughts on this.
Congratulations Anas!

Hello Anas, congrats. When I had a similar situation (for a new role in another industry), this FC series helped me a lot www.firmsconsulting.com/quarterly/management-consulting-first-90-days/
Sounds like a very toxic environment to work at
Hi Hamid, banking was toxic environment, in my experience. I would not describe consulting as toxic environment. Even when people are managed out it is usually done in a respectful and supporting manner. Kevin P. Coyne shares some details on this in How to Become a McKinsey Partner program (on StrategyTraining.com). Generally, help is provided to make sure person who is managed out has good exit opportunities. After all, it is a potential future client for a consulting firm.
Cheers, Kris
