Roadnames: Missouri Pacific, Southern Pacific, Denver & Rio Grande Western, Santa Fe, BNSF, Union Pacific
    Style: Prototypical-Freelance
Size: L-shaped room, larger leg is 26'x15', smaller leg is 14'x5'
Construction: Combination shelf and box frame
Materials: 1/2" plywood base with varying thicknesses of extruded foam board subroadbed, over 1x and 2x lumber frame
Track: Atlas Code 83 in Staging and helices, Micro Engineering Code 83 on the main lines, Micro Engineering and Walthers Code 70 everywhere else
    Minimum Main Line Radius: 24"

If you’d like to donate to my channel to support the growth of the HO Scale Kansas & Western Railroad layout, click on the three dots below the right corner of the video then click on “Thanks”. All proceeds are directly applied to the layout’s construction or the acquisition of kits and rolling stock. If you would like, you can leave a message and even suggest how you would like your donation spent!

You work pretty fast, my friend. That was a lot of wiring and everyone forgets that included soldering the drop wires to the rails. You can’t use suitcase connectors for that. The layout looks really good and there is going to be a ton of switching for ops available. The backdrops made a huge difference and nice color. I would love to see you get all of the track finished so you can check everything out and work out any kinks or changes that you may want to do before doing scenery and buildings. After a couple of ops sessions there may be things that you see that you want to change. Love the layout and wish I was a neighbor. Great job.

A vote for more track! Thank you for the comments! I solder all the joints too and consider myself a soldering pro by this point! LOL. It is too bad you're not a neighbor...I need to start assembling a crew to operate this thing!

Being from the area i love your layout. I know all the locations you are using. Just awesome. Thanks. Lift out bridge is my vote. Structure work would be good too.

I'll record your vote for the liftout bridge, but will remember your vote for structures in case of a tie! Thank you! I've not seen many other layouts that are set in Kansas, much less the Wichita area. The Augusta model railroad club has a huge layout though that has a lot of neat features. I've seen clips of it on UA-cam.

Is there an aspect or location of the Kansas & Western Model Railroad that you would like to see me focus my attention on for the next update video? If so, then leave your request in the comments below! Below is a list of locations and aspects of the layout to refresh your memory, listed in order following the main line from the bottom up, starting from the west helix:
    Royal Gorge Route
    Canon City
    Portland Cement Plant
    Pueblo
    La Junta Yard
    Lamar
    Holly
    Holcomb Power Plant
    Garden City
    Charleston Elevator
    Wichita Industrial Park
    Wichita Yard
    Towanda
    El Dorado Industrial Park
    El Dorado Refinery
    Union Tank Car Company
Aspects of the layout that aren’t location specific that I can focus on:
    Track weathering and ballast
Wiring (so I can run trains on newly laid track)
    Rolling stock weathering
    Structures
    Backdrops
Scenery (the Royal Gorge Route…the main line between Canon City and the west helix…is the only location that is close to ready for scenery work. I will still have to lay the siding and install some backdrops, before I can start scenery work but that won’t take much time or effort)
    Layout skirting
    Fascia/valance
The polls for this weekend will close at midnight Central U.S. time on Sunday, April 14th. Votes will be tabulated Monday and a short video update will be posted Monday afternoon regarding the vote result and my plan to carry it out. Power to the people!...err...viewers!! I look forward to hearing from you!

    G'day from Oz!!
looks great lots of mainline...but no grades?? (I don't count the helixes...)
I am laying track at the moment on my layout too. Its a single level very large oval style with 2.6% ish grade with a main yard (the Eastern yard) and engine facility which works its way around the outer wall of the rumpus room climbing up to a second yard (the South yard). I added a staging/storage level about 6inches below my smaller yard with a fairly steep descent (about 3 % ish) and a gentler climb out. The other trick is I am renting so its all modular!! All the wire for track power turned up today and laying down the mainline has started, just finished putting the track down for the staging tracks and I want the mainline down then I can finish the smaller yard and then the main yard and loco yard...The price of turnouts is the only thing slowing progress at the moment. There are a couple of test track vids of my DDA40X's to test radius clearances as the DDA's like to toss the first car behind off the track if the bend is less than about 26inches. The only way around it is to run a car with a long coupler or an autorack behind the loco... or have 32"+ curves!! I worked for hours on the PC using anyrail6 to get the track plan sorted......then made changes after the baseboard framing was finished as some areas on the plan did not quite match the actual dimensions of the room! It's very stress releaving coming home from work and getting some track down!!

    • @KandWRailroader
      @KandWRailroader  4 місяці тому +1

I'm surprised that you're the first to point out the "flatness" of my layout. I have no grades partially because of the geography that I am modelling, and partially because I didn't really know how to plan for meaningful grade changes beyond using different thicknesses of foamboard as subroadbed. You can chalk that one up to "limited imagination" on my part. I didn't realize it at the time, but someone else pointed out that my track plan is clearly "operations-focused" which I suppose it is, and I have no problem with that at all. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching! Oh, and very cool naval models on your channel!

Looking fantastic, great progress, what brand of track and turnouts are you using, how did you wire the yard

    • @KandWRailroader
      @KandWRailroader  4 місяці тому

Thank you! I was using only Micro Engineering flex and turnouts (Code 83 on the main lines, Code 70 everywhere else) until I couldn't find any more turnouts online in pretty much all of North America, then I switched to using Walthers turnouts which are working very well thus far. Fortunately, Walthers rail joiners work very will with Micro Engineering flex track so the transition has been seamless. I wired the yard to a common bus wire pair, blocking only the engine service areas so I can kill power to where locomotives will be parked when I'm not running them in and out of those areas. I was going to build mini control panels for each of those engine service areas but decided to run each set of service tracks to a single on/off toggle. I didn't see the point of having a switch for each track. I added plenty of feeders and soldered every connection to ensure reliability. I hope that answers your question.

@@meflog2 You're welcome! Fair warning though, I am partially color blind, specifically greens, reds and blues, so I would definitely get a sample jar first and try it out. I have no idea how well the color translates from reality to video (and back again), but I feel like the videos represent the actual color pretty well. My colorblindness allows me to see greens, reds and blues, but I have trouble distinguishing between like colors. I had to pick the color based on the name, and I confirmed it by holding the sample up to the sky on a clear day.

Those are actually German-made Faller kits. They are getting hard to come by. I got mine from Trainworld, but they were the last ones. Maybe they have restocked by now though. There are multiple pieces to those Faller kits and I know Walthers has some of them, or at least they did.
