Sorry you didn't like The Knife of Never Letting Go. I loved it!
Oh my gosh I am so relieved that I am not ALONE
+PippityBop You are not! This was awful!
I really love the book but agree with what you have said.
I hated Aaron so much. I thought of him as the energizer bunny because he just kept going. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
And the dog! Patrick Ness ripped out my heart and stomped all over it!
+Book Nerd YES! The one thing I liked about the book. Ugh.
I had to watch this after finishing the book. I often agree with your reviews of books I've read, but didn't want to be influenced by this gripe, so I waited. And just finished it and might give it 3/5 stars but your thoughts in this are totally mine. I laughed out loud about you saying how could Aaron survive each time, and how the villains keep coming back!! yes!
I felt mostly the same way as you, but I was still sucked in by the oh-no-what's-going-to-happen-next?! aspect of the story. After the cliffhanger ending, I really wanted to continue the series, but now that some time has passed, I find that I just don't care.
+Tasha's Books Yeah I will definitely not be continuing.
We did a study on this book so I think if you were to understand some of the decisions and symbolism in the book you would have to have taken a deeper look and study into these things as apposed to just seeing things on the surface.
I have to disagree, though. On the other hand I feel like the author used cheap and trite (and sometimes even too ridiculous that the ridiculousness itself is predictable) ways to keep the plot going and to instill emotions in the reader, which to me is not needed if your plot is well-developed and handled well, if you're creative and clever with it. The symbolisms are, to me, also trite and kind of not that "deep." It's my opinion though. I feel like there are a lot of books out there that manage to keep the plot going intensely, without risking the integrity of the characters, and still made the readers feel very emotionally involved, with better ways.
I actually really enjoyed the book. I listened to it on audio which I think contributed A LOT to my enjoyment of the book. It was such a cool audio book with the noise and with manchee and it just really got me into the story. I definitely see what you're saying though. I was really excited about the series and enjoying it and then manchee died in the most tragic and heart wrenching way ever. Thank goodness I was close to home when that part happened because I was sobbing uncontrollably. I really just can't handle that kind of thing. If I would have known that would happen in the book I would have never read it. So now I don't know if I'm going to continue with the series even though I enjoyed most of it. Can't handle the heart break!
+Dana Twist omg I cannot imagine hearing that scene on audio!!! UGH! That would be even more tragic.
I totally agree with you, but I still liked it haha
Your gripes are my gripes. I read it this month too. It was honestly boring reading it. And just a plain I didn't like it feeling.
+Allyson Tuggle yeah it was so meh.
I didn't like this series either. Totally agree with you.
+Katie Pinheiro I'm glad I won't be continuing.
Hello Sam. I read this book years ago because I asked for recommendations to my favorite booktubers, you were one of them of course. I was doing a sort of project that I saw on Joce’s channel, squibblesreads, and this book was recommended to me by Mari from mynameismarines. Anyway, I remember really enjoying this book, but it’s hard to remember everything, if you know what I mean. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to read the rest of the series. Now, I’m trying to go back and finish a number of series I’ve started and never finished. This series is one of them. Sadly, I find myself in conflict because the first time I read this, the death of Manchee made me cry, A LOT, and I believe that if I read this again to be able to read the rest of the series, it’ll trigger me very badly. A year ago I lost my doggy, and it’s been a very traumatic experience for me. There are still many things that trigger me. I don’t know how to finish this series now.
Felt the same thing about Manchee's death. Whyyyyyy Patrick Ness??? :(
+John Velo It's so unfair! I'm still mad about it.
I liked his book but I agree with everything you said. The next two books were repetitive, so you're not missing out.
+casey s Good to know!
OMG I JUST FINISHED THIS GOT DAMN BOOK. WHAT KIND OF MOTHA FUCKING ENDING WAS THAT. LIKE OH HEY WELCOME TO NEW FUCKING PRENTISTOWN, WE'RE JUST GONNA LEAVE YOU HEAR AND MAKE YOU WAIT TO GET THE NEXT FUCKING BOOK. FUCK THIS SHIT
What bugged me about this book the most is constant plot recycling, not just global plot recycling, but the one in the book itself. The amount of times they got captured and then run off, the amount of times Aaron appeared on their way makes me think that this one should've been catered to younger readers for that children are always fed with repetitive narratives and don't seem to get bored with it. Major disappointment.
+WoolfsWhistle Absolutely! There's only so many times I could handle that same plot. I get that it was a survival story, but I would have liked some different events besides getting somewhere, recovering, villains coming, running, repeated over and over.
Oh man, the baddies in this book. I figured one of them was Rasputin. Also, medical shock does not exist in this world! I remember having the same thought about tying up the villains or SOMETHING! *Flails*
+JulianGreystoke RIGHT?! How did he not die? Even from infection or something?! HIS FACE WAS RIPPED OFF.
I completely agree with you on this! Also, would like to add another one- the language. The way the words are spelled wrong really irritated my grammar nazi self. And I did not find it adding much to the story either, this could also be Because I am not a big fan of sentences written in accents and all of that.
+16missunique It did take some getting used to.
It's funny watching this and a lot of other people's reviews of this who've read it recently. I read this series about 3 years ago when I was probably less critical of books and I loved it (it's my third favourite behind HP + THG). Tbh though I can't remember most of the plot apart from how much I loved Todd + Viola (they're just my type of characters; i tend to have a lot of unpopular character opinions) so I would be interested to reread it now i'm more critical but I'm also scared because I love it and don't want to ruin it. I understand your points though completely and this was really interesting to watch! We can't all like popular series (I personally dislike TMI + Divergent /shrug). Great video!
+sweetlovebooks Thanks! I did wonder how I would have felt about it if I'd read it years ago before I was sick of dystopian.
I read the whole series despite not really liking it, and just to let you know it gets worse. Todd does despicable things (read: nazis "I was just following orders") there's more miscommunication and I could not stomach the misogyny and racism. It was so horrible.
+mazzychops UGHHHH yeah no. I can't with that.
Oh My God, I agree so much. The ending just put me off so much. Like, there was no hope in it, everything was just terrible and they were losing. I get that that is supposed to make me feel the whole "What happens next" thing, but it just didn't. I don't want to read a book where our heros just fail all the time. Everyone dies and they just keep losing and I really couldn't handle it.
+Andrea B Yeah I did not enjoy that cliffhanger. It was the opposite of motivating.
I agree the first book almost made me not finish the series. But at the middle of the second book, Todd is more likable and the story gets better. Also the Mayor becomes a villain that you don't really see all too often and he's pretty great.
+Michael Ngo I've heard mixed things. Some people say the series get better and some people say it doesn't. I have no motivation to read the next one now though.
Skips the spoiler free review because I was so excited for this book and disliked it too.
+Oikawa Tooru You are not alone!
I definitely agree it was super annoying that he kept the book from her.
+StrangeShellie Right?!
I really didn't like this book either. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one because everyone seems to love it. I'll definitely never continue on with it. I think it has to do a lot with Patrick Ness' writing for me. I didn't like A Monster Calls either so I'm not planning on picking up anything by him anytime soon
Besides that, I agree with you on every point. Such a let down
+Booklover Lisa I'm going to check out some of his other stuff and see if it's better for me. We'll see. Fingers crossed.
I really did like this book. (I have only just finished it after not putting it down for two days straight!) I think the things that made me like it most were Todd's personality and first person narration as well as the overall style of writing and the extremely fast pace.
But I agree with you on basically all your points against the book. Apart from Todd, Ben and Manchee (Obviously...) I hated all the characters. I didn't even really like Viola and tbh would defo have traded her to Aaron to save Manchee's life. It was annoying how invincible and one dimensional the villains seemed to be and all the main characters ever seemed to be doing was running... Like constantly just running. And every two seconds there was more detail about the horrible injuries they had, like Todd's fever or how hungry and tired and beaten up they had all become! I felt like the book relied really heavily on graphic violence and gore more so than other novels. Also, I personally felt the variety of places as well as the descriptions of settings were serious lacking and I had a hard time picturing anything other than a forest most of the time.
Still, I did love the concept of 'the noise' and the overall storyline and I really did feel myself rooting for Todd and hoping he survives so I think I will continue the series. (Despite the serious unsatisfactory cliffhanger ending!) Apparantly the series only gets better so I am excited! Only I'm not sure that's possible if Manchee isn't in it. (I bawled my eyes out when he died...)
There are books which do the trope justice ? Never found one,
+Dragoneye2222 The miscommunication trope? The Winner's Crime by Marie Rutkoski is the only book that I think does it extremely well! The miscommunication is actually for good reason.
I did not like Knife of Never Letting Go but I really enjoyed the last two books in that trilogy
One of your spoiler-y videos I can actually watch! Haha.
I had a whole bag of mixed feelings about this book. I had a lot of the same issues you did -- the miscommunication theme (like, for real, just tell the boy what the frick is going on), Manchee's death (though I hadn't heard about a major death, so I didn't know it was coming), and Aaron never freaking dying. Like...he should have died when the crocs got him and I could not suspend my disbelief that he was there for anything other than a plot device. The more I think about it, the more it bothers me.
I did enjoy the writing style, though it took a bit for me to get into it, and I did enjoy how Todd and Viola's relationship develops. And I really don't know how I feel about the ending. Part of me is angry because it's way too expected and part of me is stressed because I did come to rather like Todd and Viola as a pair. I will probably continue the series, but I think it's gonna be a library one for me.
+sarahannereads Aaron absolutely felt like a plot device. He was so unrealistic and his motivations made no sense to me.
I think that you have to read the whole series for you to understand everything. Like mayor Prentis does have super powers. And Davy is not really a villain.
I had the exact same reaction to the ending as you. I wad mostly on board with the book and then I was like "Nope. nope nope nope." and I haven't looked back. I have, however, always wondered if I wss a true oddball after hearing so many people on booktube love the series.
thank you for this validation.
+BookChats You are definitely not alone!
I didn't enjoy this either. I was actually surprised I even cried when the dog died because I was so unattached to everyone & everything in this
Yep yep yep, I agree with all of this.
+Connor O'Brien Yeah.... meh.
I liked this book :) I didn't think it was amazing, there were some weak moments and it can be a bit frustrated - I liked the second book much better. Manchee
+mijikai This seems to be a love it or hate it series.
I was reading this book laying on the couch with my dog and when the dog died I literally threw the book on the floor, grabbed my dog into a cuddle and burst into tears, like holy shit not okay.
+Crackin' Spines (Kaila) NOT OKAY AT ALL
personally did really enjoy the book
and though I can see your gripes, they don't bother me as much
however: I 100% agree with the end
it came inches from ruining just.. .the entire book and series for me
and... ugh I hate lazy-cliffhangers
I will read the next two books, if only because I own them (having gotten 3 for effectively the price of 1)
but that ending... no
+GRexCarolinii Yeah it felt so forced!
I found this dull and frustrating too! My favourite part of the story was the dog. Then he died and I just couldn't 😭💔
Why Patrick Ness, why
+CountingKingdoms EXACTLY
I've never read this book, but after hearing your thoughts about the animal and major violence, I'm not gonna read this series. I have a really hard time with stuff like that. Great review and heads up
+Morghann Bale Thank you!
SAME. Everyone seems to love this series and I just couldn't... I disliked this book so much. Oh, I'm so relieved.
+Zephyr Nick You are definitely not alone!
felt exactly the same tbh
+Mared O :)
I liked it but not planning to read the rest
Read "the rest of us just live here" it's a great book
+Marnette Ryes I plan to!
