I haven't been into metal or rock since uhhh....2004 or 2005? Really it's been the furthest thing from by brain for nearly 20 years now. Last year though I heard Floor and Nightwish for the first time and I am blown away by the talent of this group. Floor especially has wow'd me with her voice. As much as I've grown to like Nightwish, I find myself being a huge fan of Floor's work both in the band and outside of it. She absolutely killed it on this "reality tv show" Beste Zangers, which you should definitely look up here on UA-cam. She has her solo work as well and some covers which are just....sublime. She was like, grown in a friggin' lab with the sole purpose to make people's jaws drop with her voice.
Agree, I grew up with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Frank Zappa, dozens of live concerts and so on. Until 1976, when I took a break from the music scene, and the rat race, and devoted my life to meditation, and so on. And then, 45 years later, I turn on the telly, and there is Angelina Jordan on AGT, and I want to see her again, and find her on Ytuba. An a few clicks later, Dimash, and a few clicks later, NIGHTWISH. And voilà, here's the band of my dreams, that I never even dared to dream of. Similar for me. I used to listen to a lot of rock and metal music in the 80s and 90s as my mum was a big fan of metal music (and still is). But in the mid 90s and onwards my taste was mainly with Pink Floyd. In the early 2000s I got into Evanescence and discovered that my musical tastes were for certain female fronted bands, regardless of their style. I found Halestorm via Evanescence. I got into Beth Orton for a while. Then Birdy. Then First Aid Kit. All very different styles. (goed muziek is goed muziek)
Then in November 2022 I found the video of Floor Jansen's solo concert in Amsterdam. I noticed the message on the video description about her health issues and felt drawn in to watching it. I was immediately hooked by her voice, but what kept me watching was her interaction with the audience. I'm always very drawn towards *nice* people, and she seemed like one of the nicest, and someone who really loves to perform - someone you can believe she's be out there on stage even if she was making no money from it whatsoever. As much as I still like the other previously mentioned artists, Floor Jansen is unquestionably the most talented singer I've ever heard.
And from there, I found Nightwish. So I got into the band from the opposite direction that most people do.

One of the great things about Nightwish is that they sound so good live, both musically and technically.
This song is hard to sing, Floor said it herself. But it's insane. She is more than a singer, she is the full package, singing, performing, story telling, stage presence and all. The male vocal was Marko Hietala, and he is a bassist.

I think the songs you'd might appreciate more are: 1) Romanticide - from this concert (2013 Wacken) - one of their heavier songs - lots of good riffs and grittier vocals, probably their best guitar solo, 2) Storytime - from this concert - one of their catchier choruses - a little more standard song structure but with a Nightwishy bridge, 3) 7 Days to the Wolves - Wembley Arena - more catchy riffs and lots of tension and energy - super cool build from the bridge all the way to the end of the song.
If you want another epic, long, dramatic song, Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley is also great.

the band is quite powerful with their music pieces and that marko and floor compliment each other with their awesome harmonizing vocals

Floor’s voice is so pleasing to hear. And yes, Marko has a great voice too - he has sung lead before. The band, as noted, has a lot of energy (& stamina!).
As far as a follow up, I’ve seen a lot of great suggestions - One that would be intriguing for you is “Dead Boy’s Poem”, live in Buenos Aires 2018.

Two songs you could try from Nightwish that arent "exhausting" are only with Floor (singer) and Troy (plays every instrument on earth) - they did two acoustic songs live:
"Nemo" and "How's the heart" - both from the same "planet rock" acoustic session.
You will like both probably a lot.
Then there is a ballad that could also be very nice for you: Dead boy's poem (Buenos Ayres live version mostly recommended).
If you wanna go deeper into the metal rabbit hole... yes... this is exhausting for many people who dont usually listen to metal. Metal is there to go full power. Almost every metal. Its full of aggression and lust for life ... its there to throw out all your intense emotions. For some people this is just too much and its OK.
For many metal fans this is an important element to keep balance in life 🙂

So glad that you got back to Nightwish. You have so much more to discover. Floor is, of course, amazing, and you have yet to hear much from Marko, the bassist and male vocalist at all, just a taste here, which I could see you enjoyed. It is so rare for a band to have not one, but two vocalists of the calibre of these two. You have already had plenty of suggestions so I'm not going to repeat. No matter what you choose to listen to, it will be great.
" Ever Dream " is the sixth single by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. Released as the first single from the band's fourth studio album, Century Child, it was the group's first single in two years, following " Deep Silent Complete " in 2000.
The song is more operatic in nature than later works and the music itself is more on the heavy metal side. It is still played live since 2002 until today. "Ever Dream" was certified with Gold Disc in Finland two days after its release, with more than 5,000 copies sold, and later received Platinum Disc with more than 10,000 copies sold.
Floor has lots of soft material if you would prefer that. Most highly rated is probably her cover of "Shallow" on the "Beste Zangers" TV show. You could easily find it on the internet. For Nightwish with Floor, the song "The Poet and the Pendulum" has some of Floors best soft vocals, though it is mixed in with other parts that are more similar to the "Ever Dream" song you just listened to. There are also numerous operatic pieces with Floor -- most popular is "Phantom of the Opera" from the above mentioned Beste Zangers show. 🥰
Floor is just fantastic. One of the voices I never tire of listening to. I also love the compositions they construct. As a classical and jazz musician, I see them as a very different breed musically than almost any other heavy or metal band.
Their live shows are really good. I saw them live only 3 nights after my first The Warning show. What a great 72 hours of music.
Since you like Marco's voice, I suggest you listen to NW's version of Phantom of the Opera from 2004 with Tarja singing Christine's part. Epic performance for a number of reasons. There is no question in my mind who the best singer to play the Phantom has been. It is Marco.
If your face tells me anything, it's that you need more Nightwish and Floor Jansen in your life. And we totally understand and we are here for it 😊

There's tons of songs by Nightwish that I've never listened to the studio version of. I honestly don't see the point when live is sooo good!

Hey Ash, wonderful reaction as always! I was just listening to this full concert on Spotify the other day and the whole concert is my favorite concert to go back and watch. Marko, the bass player and male vocalist, and Jukka the drummer in this performance are both no longer in the band but I loved their stage presence and energy during live shows and Floor can just do it all vocally. My favorite live performance from any artist is Nightwish's performance of Poet and the Pendulum, which has a very deep backstory, live from Wembley in 2015. That performance is the epitome of art in my opinion and as always with Nightwish, epic!

You should check out the video they put out just recently: Tribal. The video is a mash of different concerts, and Floor was various stages of pregnant the whole time, still killing it.

I discovered Nightwish in June 2022 and they had just played in Toronto in May! I was so upset I missed them!
I found them in 2020. Bought tickets for their next tour, which was postponed twice because of the pandemic. Marko had retired from the band and was missed but the concert in 2022 was fantastic. @@TerriPhillips-xs1oz

The next one has to be Storytime should have been the one right after ghost love score but Ever Dream would have been my third one to do so great job and Story time is actually the next song on the set list after this one at this concert .

Seeing that Nightwish hasn't managed to floor you yet (pun intended), I wouldn't recommend listening to the studio versions. As unbelievable as it may seem, but this is a band whose live versions kick the studio versions' collective behinds. The whole Wacken concert is up on UA-cam with ridiculous amounts of views for a reason - it's legendary. All the songs sung by Tarja (whose voice I personally can't stand for more than a minute) and Anette (not bad by any means, but in the end a pop voice like thousands of others) win tremendously by Floor's interpretation alone.
Oh, and Ghost Love Score was the last song of the 2013 Wacken set - you wouldn't know by just watching the isolated clip. Baffling stamina, all of them.
Nightwish is nuts live. They are very professional and accurate, but then are also fairly fun with their audience as well. In contrast with The Warning which is super fun and energetic live, and then fairly professional and accurate - different approaches, but both are great live bands. After those two bands, I think probably Jinjer, Wage War and August Burns Red are at the top of my list for favorite live performers, but there are quite a few good live bands (lots more that are best on album/ in studio, though).
And Floor is amazingly accurate. There is one analysis video showing it in YT.
As long as bands sound the same live as the record I am happy.👍

Encore plus d'écoute SVP, fiez vous à la liste de Gabriel pour avoir le meilleur du groupe mais ce n'est pas une obligation, juste un sage conseil pour entendre le meilleur des enregistrements. Le terrier est tellement profond, bonne chance a sa découverte, pour ma part, je n'ai pas touché le fond encore et j'ai l'impression que celà n'arrivera jamais. Great having you back and yes please continue with some more Nightwish. Marko was the Bassplayer and there are a few more songs worth a look like the Islander, While your lips are still red and Ghost River. Floor can sing the phone book actually she did one page and it's on You tube lol. No two songs are fully the same and Floor can also growl check out Your is an empty hope. Live at Wembley 2015. Floor also brought out some more pop sounding music without Nightwish as many of the members have had solo projects outside of the band. Thank you.

All these songs from this performance (Ghost Love Score was the 13th of 15th songs) were all done with the previous two lead singers, so none these will you hear with Floor in the studio. In fact, she joined Nightwish in the middle of this tour that you're watching at Wacken. People in the audience have never heard her sing Nightwish before, and obviously they all bought in.
Please do more Nightwish! You might like Storytime from the same concert Wacken Open Air 2013 (its a huge Metal Festival in Germany every year 82,000 people in attendance.)

Love the reaction. Marco have a amazing voice. You must react to Phantom of the opera with Marco and Tarja(The OG singer from your first ghost love score), that version is so good.
You are on Point, when they leave the Stage, they are all sweating and heavy breathing. But so does the Audience. No Chance of digest an Live of NW without beeing involved, They simply wont let you get away with just Listening and Vibing. I would say its Program, they interact very close with their Crowd, no matter 400 guys in an Theatre( which i prefer much more personally even Sound is much more limited) or 70k + like Here.
Just dont do Them, if you are not into it. That wont do the Band or at most Yourself any Good. Its my first View of Your Content i guess, i really apreciate your authentic, calmed down Aproach. I actually subbed and stay, ofc i would love to see some more NW Stuff, but i am pretty sure ill find some real entertaining Vids already done by You, just heading off to Your Content now:)

I think just listening to the music on its own and focusing on that and then seeing the live is best for me (not suggesting for your channel - just the way I appreciate Nightwish music most) The visuals mean my attention is shared and also influences what I think of the music.
I am the exact same way. I mostly listen to audio first then visual but NW fans always say to watch the live video

If metal isn't your cup of tea, and you want to listen to Floor singing pop music, she made her own solo album (called "My Paragon") with her own pop music last year (or was it even 2022?) and she also did all other singing genres, like heavy metal and full on opera. If you want to see a non metal Floor Jansen (pronounce Yahnsuhn) then google Floor Jansen Beste Zangers 2019.
Metal is my cup of tea I just find this to be metal… but like opera metal but also sounds like music from a movie lol I can’t explain it

Nightwish is usually better live, but one number was such a challenge (even for Floor) that the studio mix is the best. The song is "Shoemaker", which is inspired by the fact that the ashes of Eugene Shoemaker, a planetary geologist for NASA, were sent to the moon. I guarantee you've heard nothing like it.

Hi Ash....I just saw you this morning...at about 6 am...and of course I had to listen to one of my favorite Nightwish songs!! Marko...the bass player, who has a great voice, left the band for personal reasons... but he has a lot of great Nightwish songs that he sings!

When you're a long time Nightwish fan, like me, you become a bit spoiled by their level of excellence, and you're not as impressed by some of their simpler songs as people who are not as used to Nightwish might be. Ever Dream is a perfect example of that. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good song, Floor sounds as amazing as ever, vocal wise there's nothing simple about it, she gives it her all. And Marko, well, how many bands have two (three actually, when he still was in the band, let's not forget about Troy) vocalists that could be the main vocalist of the band? But Ever Dream is on the simpler side for a Nightwish song, and the lyrics are a bit repetitive. Like I said, I like it, it's just not one of my favorites by them. Romanticide, Song of Myself, and Ghost River from this show (Wacken 2013) however, now we're talking 🤘🔥Storytime is good too. Shudder Before the Beautiful performed at Wembley is another great one. Speaking of Wembley, if you want to hear a different, more gritty side to Floor, try Yours Is An Empty Hope. Weak Fantasy at Tampere is another banger, and if you want to hear more Marko, the Tampere version of The Islander is *chef's kiss*. My favorite live song by them probably is The Greatest Show On Earth, and you could go either with the Tampere version, or the Wembley version, they are both amazing. I am kinda leaning more towards the Wembley version though, mainly because of Troy, that ebow, mm-hm... Their recently released live compilation of Tribal is certain to make you go looking for your socks, since they will be rocked off.
If you're in the mood for something truly beautiful and epic, you should give "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World" a try, a 30 minutes long classical masterpiece on the second side of their latest album Human :II: Nature. There is a beautiful, Nightwish approved fan made video that goes perfectly with the music. Fun fact: Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboardist and main composer of Nightwish, is referred to as the Metal Mozart.
And if you're not tired of Nightwish (and my rambling about them), Tuomas has a couple of side projects together with his wife that are worth checking out. One is called Auri, and the other one is a tribute to Don Rosa, it's called "The Life And Times of Scrooge" and is a soundtrack to Don Rosa's graphic novel about Scrooge McDuck. Tuomas is a big fan of Disney, like me. I am not even a little bit interested in the new woke Disney, however.

In my opinion the original with Tarja Turunen is better. Having said that I think Floor Jansen is an incredible, phenomenal singer and a vocal goddess. But for this song Tarja with her dark overtones is a better fit.

Depends on if you are team Tarja or team Floor or team Anette . I like them all but lean towards Tarja. Nightwish is pretty much done because to Tuomas is a real jerk imo. 😉 edit please react to Tarja Turunen and Marko Hietala - Phantom of the Opera (First time together after 18 years) there is still love there.
