Absolutely fantastic this work! Obviously quite british in tone but with french (Ravel, Debussy) influences as well as german ones. Most interesting and despite all a very original work of a great composer!
Came across this while researching for tomorrow’s presentation on Cotswolds, the landscapes of which (specifically of Malvern Hills) inspired Howells to write that. Not disappointed.
Naresh Narsh -- Even more: As though deer browsing on lawns of chamomile...your face as lovely as the hyacinth and clematis....ascending...the Firmament......
The passage beginning at rehearsal 2 (1:29 in the recording) is similar to, but not what's in the score! And they don't match until after rehearsal 4! Is one of these an older version?
I just read (and listened) further and see that you did warn us about the discrepancies. I'm not sure yet, but I think the second version is a little more interesting harmonically...although sometimes a composer's second thoughts are not an improvement...
Thank you for the upload but that transition effect on the score is really annoying. Please try to refrain from doing it in the future. It will save you time editing and also make your videos a lot easier on the eyes. Remember: less is more.
What is annoying about that? The purpose of the transition is to show the "new" measure while the last one is still on screen. No one ever complained, let me understand what's the problem here.
@@SPscorevideos It's not necessary for me to read that far ahead. At fast moments in the score it also starts to change before the measure is over. It's also distracting for me to have the movement of the page turning across the screen. I appreciate your hard work but I see many other score channels use this same or similar techniques and it drives me crazy.
People normally read ahead. The page turn must always start before the page is over, it's what every score video maker does. Keep reading score though my and others' channels and you'll improve withouth finding any distraction in the fading effect. :)
@@SPscorevideos I've been score reading for a very long time and have a relatively high skill level of creating the music in my head even without the score. My complaint is independent of my skill level. It's also not true that every score video maker does this. All of the best channels just change the page without any unnecessary transition effects. And even if it was true that every score maker video does it, still wouldn't make it right. I would try to avoid falling into a sunken cost fallacy here and just avoid doing it in future videos. Once again, it would save you editing time and make your videos much easier on the eyes. I guarantee that no one is going to complain that they actually wanted to read 4 bars ahead of where the music was playing.
@@danielg4900 When I said that every score video maker does "that", I meant turning page in advance, not the fading effect. It's hard to explain myself when you keep changing subject between the transition itself and the fact that pages are turned in advance. I can't help you or find a better solution if you don't explain what is the problem created by a transition made with the exact purpose of helping reading - if the problem is really the transition. [Also, of course, it wouldn't save me any time, since it doesn't work with me manually dragging the pages to create the turning...]
What a subtle rhythmic architect Howells was...and the harmony, shifting like clouds.
Marvellous piece
That 2nd movement is one of the most heartfelt pieces of chamber music I've heard in a long time.
Absolutely sublime!!! I'm putting together a performance of this soon here in Canada. We're all excited!!!

sehr beeindruckt, danke für die Sendung

I wish there was a recording of that where the piano part could be heard more distinctly.

Ce quatuor op 21 est une réussite ..

This is not even the only place where the score doesn’t match the recording

Me likey!
This really is some good sh*t.
