"The Opera House projection uses 17 projectors mounted 200 metres away. At those distances alignment is absolutely critical, as even a millimetre out at the projector means metres out at the Opera House."

Vivid is insanely huge and has grown so much. I went over 10 years ago it was still crowded and covered an]bout 2 km, now it is all over and you would need several night to even try and see most of it and be willing to walk a]many miles. There are even some sites in suburban areas. The opera house projector are there all the time and often light it up for various special events trough out the year.

Happy Arvo Ryan! 🤗👍 Yes, it is amazing! Last year I saw most of it live and watched it again from a few videos to find things I may have missed! The live show is really far more stunning than any video can capture! It is free, the only cost is food stalls and souvenirs, it highlights mostly the CBD & Harbour! 😃 My favourite is the moving stories on the iconic buildings, kids love the interactive games and street performers! It's friendly and safe! 👫

Vivid is the best! It’s not just lights, there’s talks, performances and food. It’s amazing to be there. Some events during the Vivid festival are paid ones but there’s a large amount of things that are free.
The drone show isn’t every night but it’s a massive highlight if you can go the night they are on. It’s packed because of the festival by the way.
The light features change each year.
Can’t wait for this year’s festival!!

*Projection mapping,* similar to video mapping and spatial augmented reality, is a projection technique[1][2] used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into display surfaces for video projection. The objects may be complex industrial landscapes, such as buildings, small indoor objects, or theatrical stages.

@DaveOz-mx5oh I've been to vivid maqny times and I always just assumed they just had epic projectors, blasted as hard as they could and whatever didn't land would fly off into the distance.
Are you saying that they project an image that is somehow the shape of the opera house, or that they're stretching, shrinking, and twisting the shape to make it look like the opera house is a flat surface?

Vivid began as a concept smart light festival in 2009 for energy efficiency championed by lighting designer Mary-Anne Kyriakou. Carolyn Grant brought the idea of a smart light project to then Manager of Cultural events at Events NSW. While the project had merit it needed to be broader and the then project team of Smart light led by Mary Ann developed the concept further. It evolved into a broader festival and Vivid was born, headlined by Brian Eno. Eno, in collaboration with lighting designer Bruce Ramus, projected 'light painting' onto both sides of the Opera House.

Melbourne does this on a smaller scale. No one beats Sydney’s fireworks or Vivid Festival. Melbourne does things like turn Federation Square into an International Noodle feast in Winter. Or the Historic Queen Victoria Markets at night become a Winter wonderland where you walk around in the snow with pretty lights. It is only snowing in there. I loved the stuff these 2 Cities come up with and with free trams there is no reason to stay home.

The ‘Vivid Sydney’ festival is held over 3 weeks in late Autumn (May) to early Winter (June) to encourage locals and tourists to mingle in the Sydney CBD. Otherwise the city would be relatively quiet.
More affordable accommodation is needed to make the CBD vibrant year round. Cost of Living is high in the more attractive parts of the CBD. Vivid gives people a reason to come in the cool months.
Btw- In October - November (Spring) the ‘Sculpture By The Sea’ festival happens with installations spaced out along the coastal walk starting at Bondi Beach. Other places and states have the same festival, I think.

You sign up and learn the music at home and then on this one weekend everyone goes to Sydney and there are rehearsals for two days. Then on the final night they sing in a concert in the Sydney Opera House. So, that's something else you could try doing if you want to time your holiday to see vivid and sing in the opera house. I've been once to the Vivid, and I was speechless, mind blown, amazed and any other words to describe this phenomenon, and then they added drones, now, the technology involved with that sends my brain into outer space.

Vivid is free (and amazing). Thst cost is probably flights and accommodation (I'm confident accommodation is far more expensive during vivid than non eventful times of the year)

If you live in another county you might have to pay for a plane and a hotel but if you are just floating around the area at the time then it its free - unless you want to eat, drink or buy souvenirs then you will pay. It can be cold at least to our standards, it is the entry point to winter at this end of the globe - I've even heard Canadian's complain about the cold in our winter and it doesn't even snow well not directly in Sydney but you can get some good skiing with a couple of hours drive (I was actually in snow falling from the sky in Yellowstone in shorts and T-Shirt - no where near as cold as I've been in Sydney in winter - though most of the time that "cold" winter is about 2 or 3 weeks at the back end of June and early July).

I agree sometimes Sydney Harbour can be very cold, I think it’s the wind factor as the Harbour is wide and can be exposed to strong winds coming in through the Heads in winter. 🥶 Having said that last years Vivid had great weather, I had to take off my jacket as it was too warm walking around the sheltered areas .

VIVID is in every capital city for the Festival of Light. Funded by the cities who invite design submissions from holographic artists & yes they're free to all public. I've only been to the Melbourne one which is every bit as glorious. They are all getting better & better every year trying to outdo each other. It is stunning & worth a trip around Australia to schedule your trip to the dates to see them all.
You can look them all up on YT.

I was working at a bar on the harbour for vivid last year,, vivid is cool but the month straight of crowds of thousands coming through our venue was rough lmao,, I remember my feet bleeding one night after work because of how much running I’d done
That does mean though that being there late at night we got to see the practice runs of the drone shows at 2am, free stroopwaffel from a van outside, and got to see the projection mapping before they did it on the opera house

The light shows are free to watch of course, but there are also 'Vivid talks' that cost like 30 bucks, for example Jenji Kohan was at Town Hall, during the peak of her show Orange Is The New Black (she also created the show Weeds that I was also a fan of) and other writers/artists have events linked to the VIVID festival.

Ryan Sydney is a beautiful city. Vivid Sydney gets extremely crowded. There are a few exhibitions you pay to see but other than that it is all free and yes very very spectacular. Some laser shows are just jaw dropping. There are lots of harbor cruises running all the time if you don't feel like walking around. We have done both and personally I enjoyed walking around the most but you do have to fight the crowds.

I went there one year as I was in Sydney, I was underwhelmed, but later I found I was basically just around the corner from the main lights like at the opera house.
Like I was somewhere along the water and all I had to do was walk a few minutes further to see it.
Like where I was I think there was some lights but nothing that would be considered vivid
I didn’t really know what it was, just that there were lights in the city.

It is nothing like the pissy stuff done in Melbourne and Adelaide

G day Mate! Vivid was created to get more tourists and locals into the centre of Sydney during it's least active time and last year it is estimated that it generated $172.9 million AUD in tourist revenue during the 23 days...Hence why the businesses love it!!! Cheers!

Ryan, please don't feel bad that Australia does these things. Back in 1982, while living in Atlanta, we took our children to Stone Mountain and saw a brilliant laser light show set to music. The Confederate men on horses carved into the mountain were outlined by laser light beams, and then to our amazement, the lasers depicted them riding off into the night sky. It was brilliant. We also took our kids to the Epcot Centre around this time and saw the most incredible futuristic exhibits known at that time, including instant live projection via fibre optics, lights that you could interupt that played musical tones, vegetables growing in the air with no soil, and many more things. That was over forty years ago. I can't even begin to imagine what they have now. America has and does lead the world in fantastic creations, which for us Kiwis were and are mind-blowing. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards from Rae in New Zealand 🇳🇿 ❤

Pretty sure it's "Tourism NSW" (the state Sydney's in) that put it on, done as a way of bringing in tourists in the cooler weather, attracting tourists from overseas but also interstate & from the country to come to the city as well. Various councils also fund displays though, not sure who else funds it & businesses in the areas around it say it's like NYE in terms of buisness it brings in, except for 21 nights, instead of NYE's 1.
It's timed to be outside the main tourist season, but also to be before it really gets into the winter cold & most importantly, when the nights are long, so it gets dark early, so as to let kids, the elderly etc really enjoy it. Lots of people, but it's not so crowded that you can't move, still easy to see everything, even for little kids who are shorter than adults & it's got easy pram access everywhere too, to make it easier for families to enjoy & to then catch trains home with their kids sleeping in their prams on the way. If it ever gets too crowded to be enjoyable, presumably they will just extend the festival length, so as to bring the crowds back to good levels. They constantly expand areas included in the festival too, which spreads people out, or allows people to attend multiple nights & see different things
& yes it's free, that trip with payment is for you Ryan, you're supposed to enter & potentially win the travel costs to attend the festival :)

Of all the years I've been living in Sydney I've only been to Vivid during one year. Unfortunately though, since it is in the colder part of the year and spending those nights volunteering during the festival I became rather ill and was housebound for nearly a week. So I decided I would not be doing that again ever.
So if you're going to come for Vivid make sure you rug up as it can get pretty cold around the harbour at night.
