In the next few years there will be a large rise in Freelancing/Consulting in Data.
Despite all the new tooling and solutions, working with data remains complex. And with more data being created daily than ever before and coming from far more sources, companies need help!
But how can you break into data consulting?
I have had a few people ask for 1:1s every week or so and it wouldn't be feasible to talk to every single person.
So to solve this I have started a free community for consultants to join, ask questions and see hours of content that I don't include on UA-cam.

I'm not personally interested in being a data consultant (at least at the moment) but thought this was an interesting conversation. Totally on board with Alex's comments about the slow adoption of new technology in companies and how understanding the handful of core concepts and technologies lends itself to familiarity with a whole host of tools even if you've never used that specific software before. Thanks for putting this out there.

totally right on the ai thing. yes, people will lose current roles, but they will have openings to fill new roles, modified evolved roles. when there is a advancement in productivity or access of some kind, businesses are not sated, people are not sated. on the contrary, their appetite increases, their expectations for more increase. ok, you got music on a record, how about a cassette, now a cd, now an mp3 player, now an ipod, now you want limitless streaming.

After ~2 yrs of DE consulting in corporate world, I am considering this (didn't realize the consulting business model & how much I can potentially charge). Really insightful, but perhaps I should plan for this & see if this can actually become a reality.
hourly isnt so bad because often the client underestimates the hours required, so you might make more than with a flat rate. a decent approach to hourly is to set lower and upper limits, like ranging from 40-80 hours per month. so the client has minimum commitment, and a maximum cost exposure. then you have flexibility to calculate your billable hours however you want. if you end up working fewer hours, within your stated range, than the project cost you had in mind, you can overstate the hours to get what you aimed for. after all, it is super easy to understate the hours inadvertently, because you are probably not logging every thought you had about the project, how long you thought about it, every interaction and time it took to message, call, etc., every bit of research you do, etc.

Are there non-compete clause or concerns from your employer that you might leak confidential knowledge, when you do side hustle (UA-cam, consulting, selling courses)? How do you navigate these issues with your boss? This is one thing holding me back. I work at one of the social media you guys are using as a DS. I have big concern showing my identity in my UA-cam channel
I'd check you contract. But what i can tell you
1. You shouldn't work for competitors, when I worked at facebook i had to say no to a chance to consult for linkedin
2. You shouldn't work on your work laptop
3. You might want to check with your boss..but be careful there. I did that at facebook because when I got a job at facebook i told them ahead of time. I saw the same thing happen with a few friends

Lastly if you make $130k already, what would be expected project-based annual revenue at end of the year?
I think it's less about how much you make at your current job and more about learning what people are willing to pay for, how much they are willing to pay and getting enough prospect calls to find projects people want to pay for. You could easily make more than 130k, but you need to make sure you have a funnel feeding you clients. Whether thats marketing, sales, etc.
@@SeattleDataGuy Facts. Hm.. maybe in the future there will be a data consulting community for client-attraction/client-base (or already exists & i haven't found yet). Otherwise might have to learn solo/find at least one extra person to pair up. At least for the beginning of the journey, it may be good to have a small group then branch out to solo data-consulting.
