Yes, but not completely (yes I live in Warsaw). We have here plenty of ugly Soviet-styled blocks, modern skyrcrapers and of course a beautiful Old Town (which isn't that old by the way) that is nowhere to be found in New York.
Poland being a "poor country" is a common misconception spread by certain areas of the press (ie Daily Mail). The truth is that Poland is considered a high-income economy that is growing at a fast rate and the country has a high standard of living. And in my experience Polish people are some of the hardest workers!

It might be influenced by the harsh past and uncertainty but in today’s word it’s rare to see that!
Actually Poland was really a poor country not that long ago. So, this is not a lie but rather outdated perception. Poland was simply the fastest growing European country since the fall of the Berlin Wall (and one of the fastest in the whole world). And it is not done yet.
I agreed that it was an old perception, not a misperception. I go to Belgium quite a bit and apparently there are a lot of Polish people migrated to Belgium (from 10-20 years ago) and many worked low level paying jobs (house cleaning, etc., almost like some portion of the Hispanic folks in the States). But my co-workers also said not as much any more as Poland economy is getting really good now.

When I had first come to Warsaw I must admit I wasn’t expecting it to be so developed! And what surprised me the most was the quality of living as well as relatively low cost of services - in any other European capital you would pay for the restaurant meal 2x or 3x more and the quality might be the same or even worse! I'm Polish and I live and work in UK. When I came to England for the first time I was surprised how underdeveloped, backward this country is. I was shocked by depravation, poverty, poor quality of healthcare, education, public transportation, infrastructure, housing and many other problems. Sometimes it looks like a Third World, honestly. And I'm not trying to be rude, I just like truth. I was always thinking that UK is like Poland but ten times better, because it has stronger currency, bigger economy, etc. Well it's not. Funny thing is many locals here believe their country is the best in everything because imirgants come here from other countries. Well-it's not. For most of us (I mean those who came from Europe, not Third World) it's just stronger currency which allows us to buy a property in our country without mortgage. Stronger currency doesn't mean it's a better, more developed country and most of my life I used to think the opposite.
This is so true! I have exactly the same impression - we can afford more when we go abroad but the standard of living, services, restaurants... You pay a lot more for it too and it doesn't necessarily mean it's better. Quite the opposite. It will be interesting to see what happens next in the UK 🙌 I deeply believe that better changes and plans for the future will come, because everyone talks about inflation, traffic jams and economic stagnation, so it would be nice if something changed 😊
@@JayandKarolina I wouldnt be optimistic, recession came to UK but ppl still thing of UK as some kind of 'british empire'. People are lazy, tend to omit some jobs and there is not enough of some professions. Brexit did a big number as influx of immigrants has been stopped, not only for basic jobs ( which now are either not taken or done with terrible quality by locals) but also some well educated and high paying jobs. EV ( Tesla, China) vs legacy carmakers - this one will be also nasty for UK. All and all - apart from huge influence of UK as political force and also London being one of finance centers of Europe - things do not look good.
@@JayandKarolina Well, one of your ministers claims Poland will have higher standard of living than UK before 2030 (probably not true as the UK shows the first signs of recovery from the crisis). But ye, poor people have it worse in UK than in Poland (due to high 'base costs', like food, renting an apartment etc.) - from what ive heard its especially pretty rough in Scotland.. But you know, if youre qualified you can earn a lot more in UK than in Poland. But tbh average wage in UK isnt much higher than in Poland anymore (if its really 2041 GBP; apparently its around 2k dollars in Poland so... i think like 1600 pounds?; in 2000 average wage in UK was around 4 times higher btw.).
What you call “these old buildings” are actually pieces of architecture that represent the history of my city of Warsaw. There are different “old buildings”- some are from pre war times, some are communist concrete cubes, called “wielka plyta”.This kind of apartment buildings were constructed the cheap, with low quality materials, also using asbestos and many unhealthy materials. But the brick buildings from pre WWII times are precious and remind of the beauty of Warsaw those days. There is no reason to demolish and replace everything what is old. The city has its important history, and those buildings stand for it. They are going to be renovated eventually and maintain in good condition. There is so much to see in Poland, but my city is the closest to my heart. Enjoy your sightseeing !
This is so true! Actually them buildings are a true treasure now because you can see the history in front of you 👀 It would have been amazing to see the whole of the city how it was before WW2... We can only assume how beautiful it was. Thank you so much for watching! 😍
@@JayandKarolinaafter Warsaw uprising Hitler decided destroy whole city. So about 90% Warsaw was destroyed after World War 2. Bombing planes making hundreds flies per day destroying one building after second building and all citizens were or killed or captured and moved from city by force. For example my grandfather was captured and moved Stutthof and my grandmother moved Pruszków.
@@JayandKarolina also, Warsaw was so beautiful and lively with culture and night life, that it was called “Paris of the North”. The german nazis monsters bombed and destroyed the whole city as a form of revenge due to Warsaw’s uprising. After the war, Warsaw was rebuilt almost with photographic details thanks among others to the Bernardo Belotto Canaletto’s paintings, showing incredibly the architectural details of the Old Town buildings.
18:50 This abandoned building is earmarked for demolishion to make space for a new slim skyscraper. 20:00 These old buildings will be renovated. One of them has the last surviving facade of important pre-war Twarda Street running from south-west to north-east direction and the other one is the birthplace of heroic chaplain Ignacy Skorupka killed at battle of Ossow during great battle of Warsaw in 1920 - one of the most important victories in Polish history. That's why these buildings will be never demolished. 27:35 These buildings on Grzybowska Street are not very old; only about 100 years. They will be renovated once ownership issues are resolved. Building touching The Bridge Skyscraper ( under construction ) is already beeing renovated by Ghelamco. 40:30 Elektrownia Powisle is simply Powisle Power Station.
Yes, definitely and this development is very successful :) It will be interesting to see what the pace of change will be over the next several years or so because Poland may even be at the forefront of the most economically developed in Europe! On the one hand, an ageing population is obviously something to worry about, but on the other hand, people are living longer thanks to better health services 🙏
Thank you so much! Poland remains still quite traditional in the cultural ways whereas in the UK we normalised also more of the rights of different cultures I believe!
To be precise, Poland never was a Soviet republic just like for instance Lithuania but we were still controlled by Soviets rulers, maybe not as much as East Germany.
I fell in love with a Pole ten years ago and now I am falling on love with the country😂❤ so beautiful, thank you for all the insight. My Polish husband had to smile big about the 'the government want us to spend time with the family'. It's probably more the catholic influence still dictating some parts of our life, just like here in Germany. You can't even enter a shopping mall, it's all closed, so that is nicer in Poland, just like the rest actually 😂. You three are lovely ppl, it was fun to listen to and to watch you. They should pay you for doing this tour! We want to go to Warsaw now like probably many others 😂 hugs ❤
That’s an interesting story 😬 Thanks for sharing! Yes, Poland has been developing pretty fast but in some aspects it’s still quite conservative! Happy to hear we’ve made you inspired to visit Warsaw ❤️
Jay, your attitute to those old tenement houses is heart breaking😢. They should not be demolished, they are witnesses of history, of development of the city and the survivors its suffering, death and resurrection. This is a holy land, sacrified with heroic, everyday struggle for survival and hecatombe of blood. Go to museums: History of Poland; Warsaw Uprising; Polin; Museum of Warsaw at the Old Town Market - then you will realise what I'm writting about!!! Glass and metal skyscrapers you can see everywhere fro NY, London to Asia, but the old buildings tell the important history of This Place.
Very good insight! Thanks for sharing - this makes complete sense. It's a strange one because it's seen as Russian but built by Polish - so people should maybe focus on what you are saying here and take more pride in it?
@@JayandKarolina Actually, the project of the Palace was based not only on US inspiration and technology used in USSR, but the architects were adding local Polish historical elements to the project. There are element shapes of historical renaissance buildings in it. :) On the other hand the modernist architecture was expanding in before WW2 Warsaw, so a bit similar huge building was planned to be built before the war, but in other place in Praga part of Warsaw.
Takie bylo zyczenie Jozefa Sigalina, owczesnego szefa BOS; ustalil on tez ostateczna wysokosc Palacu. Okolo polowy budowniczych Palacu Kultury stanowili obywatele ZSRR, czesto weterani wojenni; pracowalo tez sporo kobiet. Jezeli chodzi o nazwe, to mial sie on od poczatku nazywac Palac Kultury i Nauki.

Part of it is that we don't invest enough in PR. Parly it is because Anglosaxons had always been a bit biased about any Slavic nation so you can see any of Slavic countries shown in grey or blue filter and other such. Maybe it is just that Poland doesn't want to show off not to evoke jelousy.
The measure of a country's wealth should be the number of its own patents and technologies, but unfortunately this is missing. We are a large assembly plant and subcontractor of simple technologies, mainly for Germany. There is a significant lack of own capital here, which is why foreign capital dominates. We do not set directions of development, we follow other larger and richer allies who care about our sales market and labor force, which is why we are one of their wagons. In addition, there is widespread conservatism and the serf mentality of a large part of society.

Please, you don't even dare to compare Warsaw to NY. Warsaw is a safe place (it was safer before February 2022 though, less foreigners) clean and full of possibilities. NY?I will never again go for even a shortest visit - it's a stinking dumpster with shady creatures all over the place
As you probably noticed, we compared the office districts and the progress of investment works in Warsaw to NYC, which is a big statement, and the TS metropolis deserves recognition of this type 👍 Our vlog was not essentially a comparison of Warsaw to NYC - if it were, we would certainly include it our considerations regarding safety, costs and standard of living 😉

Also, the one building you commented on not being renovated is actually a historic tenement house. Since Polish state stole all property in Poland after WW2, there are ongoing lawsuits to reclaim those houses, and so many buildings are left to themselves as nobody will risk wasting their money on a house that could be taken away from them at any moment.
We’ve filmed in Gdańsk too and had plans for Wrocław! I can definitely agree that these cities are having a completely different vibe compared to Warsaw :)

And what surprised me the most was the quality of living as well as relatively low cost of services - in any other European capital you would pay for the restaurant meal 2x or 3x more and the quality might be the same or even worse!
I really can see Poland’s potential and I’m glad that Karolina is Polish because it’s always nice to be back 😄🇵🇱
As they think in the world that Poland is a poor country, let them continue to think so. Why straighten it out and explain it. There is not the slightest reason to lead them out of their wrong thinking. 😂😂
It’s nice to talk about the success of one’s country 😉 We’re happy to „promote” Poland on our vlogs because it’s amazing to observe how it’s been developing! And filming-wise it’s quite nice that we can attract more people to visit the country!

In 2008, Poland was completely different. Everything is changing very quickly here.
2008 you would not recognise Poland anymore, it's a building site.

I visited Poland in 2006 and in January this year. Huge differences, for better.
Visited Warsaw many times and absolutely love the Poland.
Just watched 2 of your Warsaw videos and now can’t wait for my visit in December just to try the cherry liqueur at Pijana Wisnia. Thank you for showing me there’s still so much for me to explore.
But tbh average wage in UK isnt much higher than in Poland anymore (if its really 2041 GBP; apparently its around 2k dollars in Poland so... i think like 1600 pounds?; in 2000 average wage in UK was around 4 times higher btw.).
as Polish living in Scotland i 100% agreee.
I dont agree with everything - english education is still good level.
I have been planning to visit Poland for some time, hopefully this summer.
You'll have lots of fun! Make sure not to skip Kraków - it's such a rich place in culture, history and amazing restaurants 😋
We will welcome you. It will be an unforgettable adventure 😊😊🍻

@@JayandKarolinaafter Warsaw uprising Hitler decided destroy whole city. So about 90% Warsaw was destroyed after World War 2.

@@JayandKarolina I don't understand how the city architects could accept this awful design and location... The view on the Palace from the street opposite was amazing, and now it's gone. :( I will boycott the museum and not go there...
@@JayandKarolina BTW, you said that in London shopping centres are full of people on a Sunday. I was in London five years ago and on Sunday all the shops in Oxford Street were closed, except maybe for some souvenir shops. So how is it now?
@@kari0675 Oxford street has died few years ago . Nobody goes shopping there any longer unless you are a tourist who shops at primark ;) people go to Westfield’s shopping centres these days
10:20 STORES MAY BE OPEN on Sunday and any other day, provided that this is YOUR STORE
In Poland, you simply cannot employ/force anyone to work in a store on Sunday. All this is a good idea that we saw from the Germans.
That’a a good point! Thanks for sharing! I guess there’s a fine line between people who would genuinely want to work on Sundays and the ones who would only work to earn a bit on top… So that’s why the government would rather impose a law that if it’s not your business, you shouldn’t be allowed to work 🙏
@@JayandKarolina In a democratic country, the boundaries and rules of work are set by those who have the majority. This is reasonable, it is the main principle of democracy. The speed of development of the economy, technology and property is not the most important thing in a democratic country.
The only country were you don't see arabic ❤❤❤❤
you can record whatever you want in the gallery on the street, the security guard had no right ;)
I would say so too 👍 That's why public space is called like that 😜
Człowiek by podał tego hot doga 5x szybciej.
Possibly 😂 But it was quite fun watching this robot! 🌭
Love you Poland love you❤
All trams are electric. otherwise you wod see smoke. The bricked-window buildings are not abandoned - there disputes of inheretance - value of these goes in milions.
Thanks for the info!
Żabka means little frog
Everyone in Poland loves little frog then 😂🐸🤝
Legend has it that the Palace of Culture and Science is a camouflaged Soviet nuclear missile.
😳😳
Oh.....Daily Mail or other prestigious press has been feeding people all sort of "news" from Poland. After all, they know everything 😅🤗
I don’t really understand the message you’re trying to say. We wanted to film this vlog in Warsaw ourselves because I’ve been living there for couple of years and thought it would be nice to share it with everyone who is interested how Poland has changed and what they can expect coming themselves 😉 It’s basically praising the country for all the things that have been achieved. 11:00 OMG I DON'T KNOW but i think behind you was a rll popular Polish singer that was also on Eurovision "Michał Szpak" Im not sure though
I had no idea who this guy was and I googled him - I think you are right!
Polen 💪💪👌👌
