Rob and Sean wouldn't use native instruments and effects, they'd build a self generative virtual modular patch consisting thousands of max instruments they created to be used once only for a 14 hour digital release album on a new audio file type they've encoded thats incompatible with any OS or software that will only be available for 14 hours on a date they're withholding and won't announce when the 14 hours begin.

Nice sounds and tips. Autechre have been using Max/MSP for years now building ever more complex systems. The tracks almost write themselves these days. Build a hugely complex system, press play then simply edit and layer the results. Looking at some of their patches would probably make your head spin. Some absolutely amazing sound design on the NTS Sessions.
Pretty sure from the 2013 AMA that they put more input while it's playing than just pressing play though. I mean they also do all those live shows and they don't just sit back after pressing play there either.
So sick man. I'm amazed. I have all these tools on my computer, but I had no idea to use 'm like this. Your Aphex Twin video caused me to make a few tracks that very heavily use the techniques you outlined. Thanks for the insipiration!!!
I was waiting for the huge, and I mean HUGE, Tri Repetae-era brass synth riff to appear at the edge of the galaxy, and make us all cry forever and ever and ever. But it didn't.
Hi dude, great vid! At about 6:30 you say that Autechre likes to fiddle with some kind of synthesis that you can't explain because you don't have time (which is ok really, busy guys have busy lives don't they? I'm sure they do). Anyway, I'm french and I couldn't make out what you were saying, could you right it down plz? Thx again for the vid, lot of fun!
You did Squarepusher and many other artists and i was like, "close enough", Autechre, not so much. Great attempt but, not even close to AE. Things like Exai are brilliant because we just don't know what they are doing.
And then He said: " ...so as you can see Drum Rack is the shit, it offers the deepest control and should probably be your last stop for all kinds of 'choppage'..." - Ned Rush, 2017, (excerpt. the almighty sampling tutorial)
Just go to midi effects, and drop in probability, and put velocity after that and do what he does in the video to make the sample offset time skip around in a sampler, or you can use it with anything using MIDI, instrument VSTs, hardware, etc. It’s complicated to explain, but it basically randomizes certain parameters but it’s based on ‘probability’ and not truly ‘random’, but it’s a really cool effect. Just look up a UA-cam tutorial on the probability knob, also the arpeggiator + drum racks and ‘random’ midi effects (actually the probability effect might be under midi effect racks or something, my laptop is currently broken so I can’t check for myself but I use the MIDI effects a lot, and enjoy them), if you type it into the search bar itlll come up, but yeah I recommend all of the midi effects for cool and easy to make ‘generative’ music with.
I'm here now because the AE sets from '16 and '18 just dropped on Spotify. I've been listening to them for years now, and they're clearly centered around "pseudo-reverb Karplus-strong", which is basically what you're doing here. It's nuts that they morph from dischordant reverb drones to straight chords and back again. I've never been able to do THAT with K/S.
You should have sampled your burb to be closer the ideas inception of Autechre. I think based on what Sean (fuck sorry Mr Booth) said on his last Twitch probably he would spend a whole day just for the noise :P

Yeah, can you talk to Tom and make it happen?

Nicely done! Now just make it an hour long and you've got the next ae album.

that aside; this was a great video, but those level-changes nearly blew me of my chair.

Best channel on youtube. Thanks as ever Ned. Biggest single influence on my own music in the past few years.
I used the Max version of Music thing Modular Turing Machine instead of probability. Nice to use the modulation sources that comes with too.
Sorry where I can find probability.adg and other stuff?
Cheers, Ned. Top notch. However, TBH, George really fucked himself after Howard the Duck yeah? Must be that cine-limiter.
So you can put the operator into drum rack? I love Ableton!

so the whole point is about doing awful sounds and then tame them until they´re somehow pleasant to your ear? dang.
This doesn't sound like rob and sean. Rob and sean don't do it like that.
You can make a whole album with some variations of your burp
Great stuff, so much to work on. Could you do a more indepth look at how the modulators on sampler interact with each other, it always flummoxed me.
Some people won't like it but there are some similar timbres to Autechre's last live releases here. Resonators FTW.
Just one question, this is sick, but I don't understand the probability rack. Anyone know what's going on with that? How to build one?
