Enjoyed this one man, so glad I went to see it. Gonna need a rewatch. After the film, the sound of everyone chatting to each other, discussing and trying to understand what it was they had seen. Love the retro style. As usual Nate, you are on the money with the reviews.
I gathered and drove my boyfriend and two of my brothers into the city to meet up with our other brother and his girlfriend. I was supporting this film whether I could afford to or not haha. I'm so, so happy to see it is doing well in the box office because all I want is to see unique horror films get a real chance. My greatest film-regret of the year was missing The First Omen in theatres. I had a few issues with the film (I really wanted the ciphers to mean more, specifically, like what if there were more that were compiled as a new "bible" or manifesto of sorts), but overall, I think the vision was executed really well. It was visually gorgeous, like you said.
It's so cool to see a movie with such an incredible marketing campaign perform so well. When I saw it opening night my theater was packed and I'm glad to here it's like that for multiple showings. The First Omen was an awesome theater experience. That's another one of my favorites of the year. I figured with Oz some things would be super cryptic so I'm not surprised, but I think that would have been cool as well!
Awesome. Will see it as soon as I can… It’s so narrow minded of the award bodies to be so dismissive of horror. I’d argue that horror is THE most cinematic of genres. Of course, there’s a lot of trash, but a well directed horror movie can easily outdo a movie from another genre.
@tobyb1018 the horror in this movie is so unsettling. From the first 5 minutes it just gets under your skin and stays there. Cage is unreal. I truly can't believe he pulled this role off so well. I think you're gonna love it. The Academy is so embarrassing when it comes to horror. I'll never forgive them for not nominating Toni Collette for Hereditary or Willem Dafoe for the Lighthouse.
Spoilers: **************** The sinister type twist took it down a significant step for me. The start, maybe first half, or even 2/3rds was amazing and great but i just don't like the supernatural being real like this. The doll thing was tooooo much. The beginning realistic, gritty, detective work trying to track down a serial killer is 10/10 movie experience for me. But then they went the dolls have black magic balls with satan in them and black magic to capture the vitcims' souls and possess them for the devil to control was like ehhh too much for the realistic detective thriller the first half was set in. I just don't like that style. For my liking they should have kept the supernatural element as a "possibility" for the viewer. I was entirely fine and happy with how they depicted the supernatural entity subtly through out the film in the backgrounds and stuff. But the dolls with black magic balls was too far. Should have written it in such a way that longlegs with accomplices COULD have actually been doing the killings and MAYBE there were actual supernatural forces that were guiding the way - but in the real world people would just say no they were crazy and they physically were just serial killers. Same exact issue i had with Sinister. Thought it was great in its build up, creepy, liked the gritty feel of the videos, the thriller of him discovering the story... then they go the physical supernatural route in the real world and it killed it. Idk i'm not entirely against supernatural stuff, i love twin peaks. I think it just feels dumb if its too quick like this in movies i guess. In twin peaks its crazy and deep, like you're discovering this bizarre weeeeird underbelly. Like a strange nightmare. In sinister and this, it just feels dumb and silly contrasted so quickly against the realistic world we've been in that it turns out there literally is an unrealistic supernatural being behind the killings.
I think its going to be different for everyone. Oz Perkins film The Blackcoats Daughter gave me an idea that this movie would dive into the supernatural and I love movies that mix real life horror with the supernatural. Especially with the harsh and brutal world we live in there is so much evil that already exists, that to add the supernatural element for me at least provides more entertainment value than just experiencing more real life like trauma. I'm fine with both forms existing, but in the case of Longlegs I think it works really well. The tone is very eerie and unsettling from the start and it makes everything feel very unnatural anyways. I get it's gonna be different for each and every person though!
Movies like this are why there needs to be a horror category at the Academy Awards
I wish the Academy would take horror seriously!
