  • Hi everyone,
I'm excited to announce that my beginner sewing course is now LIVE!
You can learn all about it here: learn.emilylightly.com/course...
In the course, I teach everything you need to know to get started sewing, such as how to thread and use a sewing machine, how to read sewing patterns, and how to choose fabric for your projects. At the end of the course you'll even sew your own tote bag!
My hope is that you'll walk away from the course with a foundational set of sewing skills that will give you the knowledge and confidence you need to create a variety of projects.
And for a limited time, you can get 50% off your enrollment with the code EARLYBIRD50. The code is valid through May 31, 2022.
    Thanks and happy sewing!

I would love to learn with you. Have a similar machine to yours (I don't know how to sew properly in her - the stitches all crumble and I don't know how to solve this). Hope to learn this time. It's a big dream of mine ☺️

You can do it! It might be worth taking your machine to a repair shop and seeing if they can fix it for you.

Could you please do a video on how to find patterns online…it’s so overwhelming. I’ve been spending hours online and still can’t find exactly what I’m looking for and I just don’t know enough about Indie pattern brands and which are the most reliable. I sewed a lot many years also and I want to get back into it but when I last bought patterns it was an actual store ( no internet back then). I would love a real beginners guide for all things patterns and the options for printing them out. It seems like a lot more work now and more expensive to pay to get it printed out or use the ink and time taping patterns together. I miss ‘the good ole days’…please tell and shoe the most efficient and cost effective options or do a price comparison. I went to Staples ( in Kelowna ) because I saw a video from when you lived here and thought that was an option you mentioned, and I asked for an approximate quote and they said they had no idea. What is the average cost? $20 a pattern? $50? With most patterns costing around $12-$15 probably in US dollars and then the cost of printing? I want to make sure I get a good pattern…this is expensive business and mistakes are costly. Any help would be much appreciated.

In my course I do teach how to print & assemble PDF patterns, and I also provide an indie pattern directory as well. A good place to look for patterns is The Fold Line, also you can look up reviews on Pattern Review. I used to print my patterns at Staples, but I have a printer at home now. I never printed the large A0 size at the copy shop though, so I was just paying their regular $ per page. Depending on how many pages the pattern is, I think they'd come out to around $10-15 to print. It's a lot cheaper to do at home. Some stores now offer pattern printing, like Blackbird Fabrics does the large sheets for I think $5 a page.
