I do a lot of sewing and I think I can be of use when it comes to talking about machines. The older all metal machines are workhorses and are amazing (My personal favorite machine is my Bernina 930 from the 70s) but they do cost quite a bit unless you can snag a good machine from facebook marketplace, thrift stores or estate sales. Singer is a good brand to buy as a beginner as even the older machines from singer have tons of aftermarket pieces and parts so if you find one of those in good condition pretty good machine to start out on. Just make sure to have your second hand machines serviced before using it! It's another cost to expect when you look into purchasing a machine but will overall extend the life of your machine. Also when you're just starting out the fancy computerized machines look bright shiny and fun but for overall functionality especially as you learn the ins and outs of sewing machines mechanical ones are the way to go for beginners in my opinion!

I got my sewing machine on Boxing day at Canadian Tire maybe 2 years ago. It was reduce to 80$ if I remember correctly and I don’t have anything bad to say about it. Back then I didn’t really know anything about sewing but I thought this would be something to have in the house, like tools. I also get my fabric and some notions at the thrift store, and use free patterns. I’m glad I can build up skills and not break the bank!

Oh that's such a good price for a machine! I love finding fabric at the thrift store too :)

Some of my favorite garments are upcycled from thrift store sheets!

Ooh yes I love that! I haven't done it yet but I'm always scoping out the linens section to try and find something good!

I love your sewing content. If it is something you would like to do more of I will totally be watching all of them as I have already been watching the previous ones you've made. I like the style of your videos and the types of garments that you make are very accessible. Your style is very relaxing and it's nice to see simple plain fabrics like linen being used for every day clothing. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with other videos and yours are friendly and encouraging for making some more modern basics and comfy items. Thank you for making these videos [:

I follow you on instagram and when I saw you made this video I was so excited! It could not have come at a more perfect time. I just picked up my sewing machine today and even thrifted a few fabrics and patterns to practice with!! I would love to see a video on how to upkeep your sewing machine. I have no earthly idea what i’m doing. like what needs to be replaced? how often? that kind of stuff.

Yay, I'm so glad this was helpful to you! And noted - to be honest I'm not too sure about upkeep either, so this would be a great thing for me to learn about and then share!

Thanks for all the tips! I finally sewed the Pamona pants from Anna Allen, and they turned out really nice! The scary part is always just starting 😀

Very helpful tips and resources, thank you. What I’d love to see is recommendations of what fabrics work best, for example I looked at some of the patterns you’ve listed but don’t know what fabric would be best. Is there a linen weight that is best for lose pants? That sort of thing I myself would love to know. Thanks!
