I once sent a CV, cover letter and small portfolio to Private Eye in the hope of finding work there. I received a hand-written and signed reply note from Ian Hislop himself stating that he regretted to inform me that there were no opportunities available. I was amazed that he'd spared the time and had been polite enough to write back to me, and it was without a doubt the best rejection letter I've ever received (I have to admit I was somewhat starstruck too). Ian's a good satirist and the point of satire for me is to point out hypocrisy, misleading and lies. Their weapon is truth, the more negative effect a target of satire has on society the more value satire has as a weapon. It should never concern itself with whom the satire is targeted, thus be politically unbiased. Some looking through their personal political prism would accuse a good satirist of being partisan for pointing the satire at their own parties expense, while completely ignoring a good satirists history of calling things correct no matter whom their target. I also value the claims from a partisan satirist too if their claims have a basis in truth, as putting ones own group in order has more value than focusing only on the issues of others. nous devrions tous être charlie !
If you have any doubts about Ian Hislop watch his confrontation with Priti Patel about Capital Punishment on Question Time. He ruthlessly exposes Patel's poverty of intelligence and logic.
Ed Lewis there is an obvious mistake in your comment. However with your error in grammar i learn how not to be. Pictures stimulate the mind far quicker. ‘A picture paints a thousand words’ Ironically private eye has sketches and cartoons. I saw a very nice pop up card that showed a Maple Tree. Snobbery between abilities causes unmerited conflicts. Discipline a person to better their skills or accept their skills as unique to them rather than purely judge.
the tessellater an opinion is worthless child unless you add reasoning. You learnt this at primary school or kindergarten. By not saying you expose the insecurity of your argument. Why is it nonsense? Pray tell me. Show me your well polished acumen?
Bly me, I have exactly the same piano as Hislop, a Knight upright. It has a very nice sound, a bit heavy on the touch but that makes for great subtleties in dynamics that are not possible to produce on stage grands.
Ian Hislop is a man I cannot fail to warm to. I have always found him to be a man of immense integrity, whit and humour. One of my go to entertainers and political commentators. He is exactly where he needs to be, "on the outside of the tent pissing in" to quote Sir Winston Churchill. The political life as an employment, is not for the likes of him. Men of integrity do not go into politics, it would spit them out! I am sure Mr. Hislop sleeps fine at night, with his conscience warmly embraced...not so for the likes of those who are in politics and selling out day after day! Bravo Ian, keep up the good work and if ever you are in NY look me up and come and have a pint!

Yes, though even we were surprised to find out that the likes of Michael Morpurgo, Tim Rice, and Jo Brand were all among the Masonic ranks. Not to mention all the people we've interviewed over on our Chat Politics channel...
Ugh, I love Hislop but yet again someone misquoting brand. he never said don't vote. he said don't vote for a party that doesn't represent you. whats controversial about that? its the central idea of democracy.
Brand says very little, but in a "aren't I clever with my vocabulary" kind of way - he is a total twerp; he should be called 'Russell Bland' but he thinks he's being 'New Age' - like the 80's !
Quite funny to hear him reveal that the most offended letters he gets are from right-wingers. Even in the comments here, the only angry and upset comments are from right-wingers who clicked on the video and wrote an abusive comment without bothering to even watch the video. Says it all, really.
Really? Where?....I've got this far and seen nothing of your "observations" ....Care to list them, John? Just point them out and I will re-read all those comments I have waded through without seeing any real "Right-Wing" "abusive comments." May I suggest you change the colour-tint in your spectacles? (Ever so politely of course...would not want to cause offence or "abuse".)
The great Irony of Ian Hislop is he criticizes UKIP claiming "they point out sources of public dissatisfaction and not offer any solutions", this statement sums up the entire career of Ian Hislop and every one in the BBC.
I think the test is never whether or not the world is better after you than it was before you, but instead whether or not it would be better if you'd never been in it. Basically the same except it eliminates the influence of others and just sticks to what you've done. Same goes for a thing you did in the world. Is it richer for it, than it otherwise would've been? I don't think that's necessarily the be-all and end-all but it's a solid place to begin. I'd certainly put an investigative journalism effort such as Private Eye in the "is better for" category.
described as "a cuddly ball of fluff" by Angela Merkel , Ian "the Hiss" Hislop had a tough upbringing . his first job was in Billingsgate market where he was a "topper upper" , a job that involved easy picking for the young Hiss , however he soon fell foul of the Kray twins and joined the Richardson brothers as their "topper upper", until they got jailed , then he wandered in and out of various "earners" until as fate would have it he met Bernard Ingrams in a pub and decided to work for him . the rest is history .
Eight years on..... I would very much like to know his views on the BBC of 2022...... Because the whole house of cards has proven itself thus. I've always like Ian and his forthright views.... and his sheer blatant honesty ...even when answering obvious set-ups on HIGNFY.
@@AlisonBryen his contribution to The Fine Young Cannibals version of "Suspicious Minds" is up their with Elvis' version...if not it sometimes edges it above!?!
It's a bit unfair to equate Brand and Farage IMO. He says both "do not offer solutions". Well Brand implores people "not to vote" I reckon that falls under the category for "do not offer solutions". On the other hand, Farage has a blatant correction to the issue of large scale immigration, the strain on public services, wage compression for the working class and multiculturalism: leaving the EU. I felt like Hislop spoke a lot but in the end didn't say anything at all. He did rightfully put the question: "would you ever go into politics?" into place, honestly if you've watched HIGNFY or read Private Eye the man is the last person to go down that route. A wasted question.
I agree. Hislop claimed Farage and UKIP just sneered at everything, but offered no solutions (which obviously Farage does, as you pointed out) But when asked the same question about himself and Private Eye, he just said the same thing he accused UKIP of doing.
Deep Zepp The difference: Private Eye is a satirical newspaper. UKIP is a political party. If UKIP where a satirical newspaper I'm sure he wouldn't criticize them. The job of newspapers is to uncover problems. The job of political parties is to solve problems.
Nicole Baresi They are "idiotic" because you don't believe in their views? Right. Ok. That very comment you made is the reason why UKIP have flourished, and the reason more and more people are supporting them.
My my, what a reaction, have I kicked a mountain of dung beetles over ? As the old bomber pilot said. 'you know when you are on target, when the flak is greatest'. Super great.
samwiseshanti I suppose that would be North Brit - can't recall what that was about but where people do or do not live is nothing to do with the validity of their view half of Scotland don't vote or support the SNP so 100% of them are clearly not Morons
West Brit No, but it does mean that your opinion on why the SNP won so dramatically is basically worthless. Had you been there, you would have seen that the SNP were the only party in the whole election running a positive campaign. You could see it coming a mile away, since every time you saw labour or tories they were fearmongering, and when you saw the SNP they were talking about affordable housing, progressive taxation and ending austerity. Whether or not you believe them/ trust them to deliver is one thing, but it shows that optimism wins elections, and the idea that the SNP won because everybody is a 'moron' who wants independence is something said only by people who don't follow these things closely, but still think their opinion is somehow an informed one.
samwiseshanti In fact they were screaming abuse like Red Tories at the Labour party and making completely unrealistic promises, and as with all Nationalists running a under the Radar Racist campaign- Just because you bought it because you are either naïve and think complex problems have simple answers or are a narrow minded Nationalist doesn't mean you are right as you live in Scotland any more then a UKIP Voter is correct as he lives in the UK
West Brit I'm not Scottish, let alone a nationalist, and as I implied, I'm not saying they should be believed or trusted to deliver. But your total and unapologetic ignorance of the SNP campaign is so evident, you cleary buy into this narrative that the SNP only appealed to people who wanted to leave the UK, and it's that type of judgemental-yet-completely-uninformed 'analysis' that is so prevailant among people outside of Scotland, and totally absent from people inside it. They really weren't screaming at everyone, I was living in Leith and you should have seen the difference in political ads in the street. Labour were saying the SNP were dangerous, the Tories were saying the SNP and Labour were ignorant idealists, the Lib Dems were saying that Labour, the Tories and the SNP were incapable of delivering change, and the SNP were saying that thet would make housing affordable. You could question if they were capable of delivering it as long as you like, but the fact is positive messages inspire more voters than negative ones, and although I voted, and not for the SNP, it was so, so predictable everybody there could see coming it a mile off. The mainstream parties fucked up, they all mishandeld their campaigns north of the border- that's the truth of it.
Some years ago a girlfriend of mine said that" You can tell a man from the shoes he wears". Hislop appears to be a prime exampel of what hse was talking about! But Ian will be aware that God doesn't judge you on what clothes your wear. Great personality and Private Eye is a great magazine!

how did a channel with 2k secure a interview with ian!?
Thank Christ for Ian Hislop - please don’t die
You and Paul provide much needed sustainable stuff. Keep it that way.
HIGNFY - Best
As always, fantastic guys. I always enjoy your CP or CL videos :)
Wow, really great questions that make for an interesting interview --- nice work!
If you have any doubts about Ian Hislop watch his confrontation with Priti Patel about Capital Punishment on Question Time. He ruthlessly exposes Patel's poverty of intelligence and logic.
Nigel solution was one he didnt like. That was leaving the E.U. AND he was right and Hislop wrong in his patronising way.
ian hislp a true global treasure
I don't the read the Star. You don't have to read the Star, it has pop up pictures. ;)
Ed Lewis there is an obvious mistake in your comment. However with your error in grammar i learn how not to be.
Pictures stimulate the mind far quicker. ‘A picture paints a thousand words’
Ironically private eye has sketches and cartoons. I saw a very nice pop up card that showed a Maple Tree.
Snobbery between abilities causes unmerited conflicts. Discipline a person to better their skills or accept their skills as unique to them rather than purely judge.
James Rowden oh, so you don’t imagine pictures or moving pictures in your head when reading descriptions in novels, stories etc?
James Rowden no it wasn’t for i draw. It was not for me. Or perhaps you lack something that you wish you had
@@gjeacocke - to quote 'a picture paints a thousand words' is in fact nonsense, but you use it as part of your arument - very erudite! Not!
the tessellater an opinion is worthless child unless you add reasoning. You learnt this at primary school or kindergarten.
By not saying you expose the insecurity of your argument.
Why is it nonsense? Pray tell me. Show me your well polished acumen?

@@RUBBER_BULLET Off your meds again, huh?
Bly me, I have exactly the same piano as Hislop, a Knight upright. It has a very nice sound, a bit heavy on the touch but that makes for great subtleties in dynamics that are not possible to produce on stage grands.
Great interview of a great man. Thanks
Did I just hear this English interviewer say "to who" (at 8:41)?
A good honest man.
This man is a legend! Whatever he says, I believe him. Totally trust him. Would love a chat with him although I don't think he'd like me lol
simjem people had the same adoration for Jimmy Saville and Roll Harris.
Davy Tornado what the hell does that even mean? it doesn't even deserve this response.
I never trust anyone a hundred percent but I'll love to talk to him but he probably not be into talking with a purpled hair guy who wears too much black eyeliner and black clothes.
I bet you're great fun at parties.
When I think of Farage I think of stale cigarettes rather than fresh air...
Check that against a pint of beer and debates that attempt to clear the air that are available in 2021.
How many editors have pianos in their office?
Hell, how many musicians do..?

HAHA
Masonic Handshake
well that explains the mystery of a channel with less than a thousand subs getting access to the great and the good doesn't it..
Yes, though even we were surprised to find out that the likes of Michael Morpurgo, Tim Rice, and Jo Brand were all among the Masonic ranks. Not to mention all the people we've interviewed over on our Chat Politics channel...
yes...ian hislop should be paraded for free in any random pub on a saturday night
Jo Brand is a mason?
I have studied the handshake for the last 3 hours. With my yotube education I conclude that both men are lizards.
Gotta love the dripping sarcasm :p
Ian Hislop is a great satirist, comedian and world class intellect, I would rather he had taken over hosting QI than anyone else!
What w world it might be if such dignified, intelligent, brutally honest and fair people rant it!
Fascinating and funny guy. Good job by the interviewer too.
"transparently, straightforwardly and honestly, and therefore effectively..." An idea that shows an unusually healthy worldview...
If everyone stopped buying the daily papers they would deliver them free because they want their opinions in your house
They do. Via the internet.
Just point them out and I will re-read all those comments I have waded through without seeing any real "Right-Wing" "abusive comments."
May I suggest you change the colour-tint in your spectacles? (Ever so politely of course...would not want to cause offence or "abuse".)
cracking interview really liked your style thank you
The great Irony of Ian Hislop is he criticizes UKIP claiming "they point out sources of public dissatisfaction and not offer any solutions", this statement sums up the entire career of Ian Hislop and every one in the BBC.
UKIP lost. And badly.
Deal with it.
"All that satirical cabaret in Berlin in the 1930's put a stop to Hitler didn't it? Oh no - it didn't" Peter Cook. The one we really miss.
We miss Alan Coren too
"Vague fumes of alcohol" I died.
Rather them fumes than the ones coming from ol baldy hipslop
I think the test is never whether or not the world is better after you than it was before you, but instead whether or not it would be better if you'd never been in it. Basically the same except it eliminates the influence of others and just sticks to what you've done. Same goes for a thing you did in the world. Is it richer for it, than it otherwise would've been?
I don't think that's necessarily the be-all and end-all but it's a solid place to begin. I'd certainly put an investigative journalism effort such as Private Eye in the "is better for" category.
Keep going Ian
We’re right behind you ,yes you say what a lot of us think with humour.
The thing that frightens fanatics
A piano as well as a bookcase; that is my perfect backdrop!
It's almost as if he's talking about real journalism and a proper journalistic approach.
Ian is lovely I can tell he’s kind it shows on his face
I would love to work for Mr Hislop.
described as "a cuddly ball of fluff" by Angela Merkel , Ian "the Hiss" Hislop had a tough upbringing . his first job was in Billingsgate market where he was a "topper upper" , a job that involved easy picking for the young Hiss , however he soon fell foul of the Kray twins and joined the Richardson brothers as their "topper upper", until they got jailed , then he wandered in and out of various "earners" until as fate would have it he met Bernard Ingrams in a pub and decided to work for him . the rest is history .
Great interview/er/ee!
Eight years on..... I would very much like to know his views on the BBC of 2022...... Because the whole house of cards has proven itself thus.
I've always like Ian and his forthright views.... and his sheer blatant honesty ...even when answering obvious set-ups on HIGNFY.
I liked his hit songs in the 80s.
Smalltown Boy 🤣
@@AlisonBryen his contribution to The Fine Young Cannibals version of "Suspicious Minds" is up their with Elvis' version...if not it sometimes edges it above!?!
This video might just have the best dynamic thumbnail of all time :)
The job of political parties is to solve problems.
blenderpanzi I agree. But I'm sure Hislop knows UKIP do offer solutions. Hislop just does not like UKIP's solutions.
Deep Zepp Quite possibly because they are generally idiotic.
Nicole Baresi They are "idiotic" because you don't believe in their views?
Right. Ok.
That very comment you made is the reason why UKIP have flourished, and the reason more and more people are supporting them.
Who is there piano there? In editors office?
Does the interviewer looks EXACTLY like Ian Lee or has my brain broken?
I know, right? I've watched this quite a lot and every time it starts I think it's "TV's Iain Lee" ha
:)
Xanzia Klik is it not him?
he doesn't have a bandage 'round his head so it can't be
I am still waiting for my subscription to arrive Hislop, what have you been doing for the last few weeks, aside from making me cross with you?
Ian bishop is a good man of integrity and funny long live private eye
🤣🤣🤣
He doesn’t say what he really stands for ?
If anything at all
Didn't he play for Man City ?
My my, what a reaction, have I kicked a mountain of dung beetles over ? As the old bomber pilot said. 'you know when you are on target, when the flak is greatest'. Super great.
If they ever cast Babyface for a Batman movie, they should definitely use Ian
Can we please have subtitles?
He is spot on about Brand and Farage you could add the snp to the list
+West Brit I'm 100% sure you don't live in Scotland.
samwiseshanti I suppose that would be North Brit - can't recall what that was about but where people do or do not live is nothing to do with the validity of their view half of Scotland don't vote or support the SNP so 100% of them are clearly not Morons
West Brit
No, but it does mean that your opinion on why the SNP won so dramatically is basically worthless.
West Brit
I'm not Scottish, let alone a nationalist, and as I implied, I'm not saying they should be believed or trusted to deliver.
Great personality and Private Eye is a great magazine!
...My grandfather ( Jack Lambley ) was a cobbler from... Northampton, ( The recognised home of Cobblers ) and he would say that you could tell a man's personality from his shoes !
Also he was unable to enlist for the second world war because he had to stay in England and repair the Forces footwear.
