- Vegas Dave vs Gary Vee, Remember it was me 3 years ago that shook this sports card market by storm and predicted this boom. Everyone laughed at me when I spent $400,000 on a piece of cardboard instead of buying a house or investing it in another opportunity. I made a bold prediction to the world that my Mike Trout rookie card would break the all time Honus Wagner record. 2 years later I executed my vision and the card sold for just under $4,000,000. Not only did this silence the haters and critics, it got the sports card industry to explode. People now viewed cards as a huge money making opportunity and not just a hobby.
Now I am the first person in the world to predict the sports card market will collapse by the end of 2024. This reminds me of the sub prime mortgage industry crash in 2007.
I currently still have money invested in this industry but if what's going on currently in the market does not stop immediately, not only will the card industry die, the hobby will be gone forever as well

If I felt the current goings on was healthy organic growth, I'd be all on board. When it is largely due to temporary world circumstances and fad hype by a bunch of UA-camrs shooting their mouths off, that's not going to be sustainable for long.

Not mad at his opinions. He actually has some valid points. While I dont agree in a full on crash I do believe modern card prices will correct. Once one of these big name rookies flops and costs people alot of money they'll think twice about overpaying for unproven talent. That being said the burning of the Jordan was terrible. Theres so much that could've been done with that money. That was unnecessary to prove a point.

vintage is indeed really good, but with the high price he doesn't really talk about how the demand got like 100x bigger. Has long has the hobby and demand keeps growing or doesn't go down the card will stay being worth a lot. The facebook groups of sports card keep gaining new people every day and sports card is just the new art collectible just like people buying big painting. I don't remember the number but i think sports card had like 5-10% of the money invested of art painting. So it's not super inflated, only problem is people buy random rookies for a lot of money, but buying goats right now of modern or vintage will grow a lot in the future

Cards were worth money in 2010. I remember blake griffin cards about 1k. Jordans were still alot. John wall and rondo. This guy thinks it just got huge now. This was slowly building. And...its very hard to stop buying cards. Its addicting. You are not gonna just have thousands of people just not buy anymore. I think that Trout he sold 4 million...half of it probably went to taxes so with the 2 million he bought those dumb derek carr cards. And lost money. Mays, mantle, cobb.. but thats 1% likely only auction houses, professional Athletes, license vendors, distributors. 99% of us never had access or will never ever have the resources to drop 100k or more on a card. Premature thinking.. people always loved collecting.. prices will correct on modern cards of speculation. However, vintage HOFers were long over do for some of these prices. The over population of the 90’ scared collectors away. However, the mass influx of new investors now succeed the pops of those 90’s cards increasing the demand. Only time will tell

I agree to an extent. The TOP TOP end could see a huge decline because the interest should naturally decline from the top dogs, however the low/mid market where things are realistically priced and especially the soccer market, that’s yet to hit this major inflation and quite a few are priced around what they should be, not forgetting that it’s the most played and followed sport in the world. When the “crash” happens, opportunities arise, that’s how I look at it

One thing is they’re not overprinting cards like they did in junk wax era. Yes, they are pushing more products out buts there’s only certain lines of cards people are paying for. Not every release is reselling like crazy. And as long as there are fantasy sports, cards will always sell. Maybe not for huge prices but people will buy rookie cards.

The idea that the whole sports card market will crash by 2024 is a bit out there considering ever since the pandemic card collecting is booming again (as well as nft card collecting). Certain companies like "Topps" and "Panini" will probably lose value towards the 2024 date and be replaced with fanatics trading cards(look it up nba/mlb switched contracts). Just because they lose value doesn't mean the market crashes. Now I can see the market crashing on the nft side due to NFTS being volatile in general but I do not see the physical card collecting market crash......

Yeah his delivery is a real turn off but there was a lot of good content especially in the middle. I never connected the card-share model with the over inflation, for example. It definitely clicked. As a 90s card collector coming back into the hobby, I can’t help but be super skeptical of the modern market.

Nobody has come forward to claim they bought the Trout card...as Dave says, get a friend in the community to purchase and it drives up the value. Also would live to see who in their right mind would be paying $20-30k for a Derek Carr card in the last 6 months.

Think about it people, when a product like NBA Hoops comes out the gate at $400 a box. This is the low level end product of the year always. It was always fun and affordable for the average collector....Optic used to be $100 a box. Now it starts at $800-$900? That's insane. And if people need a history lesson, remember the "boom" of the late 80s-early 90's, now lovingly referred to as the junk wax era? The card companies are pumping more product than ever into the market right now. It will take a couple of years again before people realize that there is way TOO MUCH out there and the prices will crash! History ALWAYS repeats itself

This can be said about any industry. Look at the stock market and gamestop...The stock market value does not match the actual reality of the gamestop yet its worth "billions" now with a defunct business model? The fact its being treated like gold or silver means the sports card market will only get profitable and more people will invest in it. Because of that, it will NOT collapse in 2024 but have stability through the 20's like bitcoin or gold have done..(if u get in early of course)

Why would the market crash when so many people love the hobby? If the hobby crashes then sports betting, fantasy sports & sports in general will crash, which I don't see happening because sports are king in USA.

1. Curry just put up a 40 point game, and is playing MVP level basketball. Obviously, people are excited to watch that and hence his card values are rising. He has a MVP, Finals MVP and multiple rings, all with one team. He has an impressive resume. Nothing wrong with curry's card prices going up.
2. Kobe passed away last year, and he has an impressive resume, people were under appreciating him, when he was alive and after his death people realized how great his legacy was. (Sad but true). Since people are appreciating him more now, and comparing him to lebron and MJ who's card prices are going up, there's no surprise that Kobe's card prices are breaking records. Especially when it's the refractor which greens easily, and one in a perfect condition is almost impossible to find.
3. Mahomes just won his first superbowl when he was 24, and he's a young prospect and some of Brady's cards are more expensive than mahomes. The particular card you showed, was National treasures, and it has memorabilia patch and an autograph, which cards in 2000( brady's rookie year did not have). So you can't compare the two, and even if you wanted two compare them, look at the prices of Tom Brady's contenders 2000 card, which is also fetching record breaking prices.
4. The Tattis Jr was the only good example of an overhyped card, i'll give you that.

All the players you bought up, were terrible examples and your explanation of why their card prices don't deserve to break records, made no sense apart from one.
