I think the fact that Kapono had a friend who suffered from addiction was impactful. Kayla could feel Kapono's pain and therefore made their performance deep and soul shaking on so many different levels. This was still a good performance, but Kayla and Kapono's routine helped me realize how deep and controlling addiction can really be.
Having lost a sweet lovey niece to an addiction that was more powerful than her family, her young boy, tears me up to watch this. Kayla and Kupono's version expresses the raw hunger and power better for me; Kupono plays the evil lover (drug) so well that it's just terrifying and so truthful. Wow.
I just watched both side by side and I think they both have a lot of strengths! It's actually a little bit like this is their younger selves, when they had more energy and fight in them- and then the original is them older, when the woman is more worn down and defeated, but still trying to fight.
I watched both routines and to be fair to Cole and Lindsay I watched it first after many years of not watching Kayla and Kupono, because I wanted to be transported.... I am a fan of Lindsay on DWTS and I thought Cole had an interesting take on the character. But it didn't give me goosebumps. It was well executed but there was no complete and utter devastation in Lindsay's expression. No real depth of just how far down she had fallen. It was unfortunately for me too careful to be completely believable. Then I watched the original again. Kayla, my god that girl just made Mia's choreo sing, from the moment Kupono snaked into her sphere, to when she was just launched as he threw her away like garbage, it just struck a chord of wow this is how a drug seduces and hates you at the same time, and there but for the grace of God go I.... What an amazing tour de force by Kayla. Kupono was also so very strong in his expression and commitment. Together this is why great choreographers don't win Emmys by themselves, the execution of a piece must be just part of the dancer's DNA.
Lindsay and Kayla performed this differently to begin with Kayla performed her character as a catatonic addict who could barely get away. Lindsay was fighting to escape seemingly the entire routine. the ladies facial expressions at certain points tell different stories even if it's the same routine. both a good...personally I like the first better but Lindsay's pure fire, while not technically perfect...was beautiful in its own way
Both were good. However the orginal dance I feel had more fluidity, and I can feel it 10 times more emotionally, especially from the girl. The girl in this video although a fantastic dancer shows too much power versus the delicatness this dance should have.
Exactly!! This dance is too rigid compared to the original. It lacks the fluidity and the girl seems a bit powerful to portray herself as a victim to addiction.
@@munirahmokhtar9006 you also have to take into consideration that Lindsay (the one in this video ) is a ballroom dancer. The original dance had two contemporary dancers
@@eduardocastillo4949 but Kayla Radomski always nail ballroom category even when partnered with a pro. She literally is the epitome of so you think you can dance 💖
Good, but I fell in love with the original, and it's hard to divorce them. I did enjoy Cole's cold, mechanical interpretation, and feel like it worked (as opposed to Kupono's maniacal demon-face), but I think Lindsay made it too pretty. I remember that from the notes on the original: the choreographer had to keep telling Kayla to not make it so "pretty" and result is so out-of-control and raw. Lindsay is so perfect and crisp that it makes it looks affected.
TheJewelCurls drug addiction isn’t mechanical which is why I didn’t like Cole’s interpretation of the character. Kupono’s “maniacal demon-face” is exactly what drugs are. Sorry but Kupono’s version is flawless
Cole's interpretation is what made me feel something for this piece as opposed to the other. I totally agree that Kayla's interpretation was more captivating and honest, but I feel like the key to this piece is in the antagonist, and Cole provided the perfect inhuman force for Lindsay to fight against that made this piece more affective. I just wish Kayla and Cole could have done this.
Kupono's interpretation was the best. His demonic face made anyone related because when you're in situations in which you feel you can't scape such as drug addiction or mental illness or toxic relationships you feel those things as demons. The demons you can't fight not something mechanical. So yeah... Kupono was better
I love both versions, but this one seems almost too choreographed, kayla looked a lot more effortless which helped show her struggle and helplessness in the situation
absolutely nothing compared to the original. the best moment in the original piece was kaylas face when he grabs her arm and forces her down to me this was too choreographed. kaylas and kupono felt it more. it was honest to them.
I appreciated what they tried to do with this episode of the season, however: This dance is one of the most iconic dances of the whole series, and to try and remake it with different people is just cruel. These dancers are completely different in their movements, and to give them this task was almost like a cruel joke...Especially because I loved both these dancers and they suffered this week because they made them do this song.
On the whole, the original is incredibly superior to this. But I've always wished I could see Kayla dance it with Cole. His take on it was much more sinister and creepy, and I would love to know how that would pair with Kayla's breathtaking emotional journey.
1:09 is what made me fall in love with this rendition versus kayla and kupano. I have been there with lindsay in my own way and it is so visceral to see that movement and it’s continued throughout the story of their duet
kayla and kupano’s performance is like a bf/gf codependent relationship gone sour. lindsay and cole preformed it as if cole was lindsay’s inner struggle/demon
bellacunningham5500 i thought it was bc he was channeling more of a popping style bc he dances hip hop i think ultimately what lindsay and cole tried to do was interpret the dance, not mimic it and I -personally- liked their interpretation
bellacunningham5500 i thought it was bc he was channeling more of a popping style bc he dances hip hop i think ultimately what lindsay and cole tried to do was interpret the dance, not mimic it and I -personally- liked their interpretation
I love how limp Lindsay got at the end because it made her look so powerless against him and I liked how when Cole grabbed her arm at "you're keepin me down," she looked like she was in so much pain and agony and it looked like Cole's character (the drug/addiction) wasn't trying at all yet still had this incredible hold on her. That being said, I will always love Kayla and Kupono's the most, it's my second favorite dance to ever be on SYTYCD (after If It Kills Me- season Five Alive is where it's at!) because Kupono was so dark and powerful and Kayla's fair skin looked so beautiful on the dark red costume and her facial expressions were absolutely perfect. Also Cole looked too robotic to me, it doesn't really remind me of a drug or an addiction at all. It's still very good, I just prefer the original, but if I had nothing to compare this to, I'd love it
I loved the different takes on both of them! Where Cole portrayed the drug itself, emotionless the entire time while Kupono was more like the evil drug dealer who knew he could make bucks from the customer and refused to give her up. It would be interesting to see what it would be like if Cole and Kayla danced it together :) Can't compare Lindsay and Kayla
The original version always spoke to me more until recently. But now instead of addiction this version tells the story of healthcare workers fight with covid. Cole's completely robotic, emotionless stance just makes me think of how a tiny little virus can slowly kill and break us nurses and doctors everywhere as we fight.
refresh my memory...why did they make them do this? these seem like phenomenal dancers but I just rewatched kayla and kuponos version on repeat for 30 mins (no joke) because my family and some close friends suffer deeply from addiction... it just ... moves me. this version i watched twice to try to really feel the emotion but didnt get the same "ok.. one more time" rewind that i got with the original. They would have greatly benefited from a similar song/dance. Lets stick to bringing ellen in for the remakes (i.e. "get outta yo mind with Twitch)
It was a tribute to Mia Michaels night. If I remember correctly, she had returned to choreograph on the show, after being absent for a number of seasons. Every pair did one of her signature pieces that night
It's still a beautiful piece but it just not as effective to me as the first one. She doesn't seem as completely dependent and helpless as Kayla did when this was first done. but still a very emotional dance.
Stop comparing Kayla and Lindsay. . We all know that linds is a ballroom dancer and kayla is in her genre with this dance, so obviously she nailed this routine. Not bad for a ballroom dancer to do a dance like this. :))
I think the thing that bugs me about this one is that they are trying way too hard. Albeit, they are trying to live up to a literal masterpiece that cannot and should not be improved. But they both are trying way too hard. Especially Lindsay, her movements are extra sharp and have a lot of bounce and strength. Kayla looked tired, and weak, as someone surviving domestic violence would be, but also strong.
I really wanted to dance jazz like that, but I just think jazz is separate! I would love to dance contemporary jazz with a partner, I think it's amazing
No one but Kayla could have done this. Cole, however, was mesmerising and breathtaking in this....Kupono however scared me in the original with his eyes and hands...he looked poisonous! Cole seemed more of a robot controlling her in this, which he did beautifully.
I totally agree Cole seemed more inhuman because he showed no emotions and the way he danced seemed extremely controlling. If Kayla and Cole did this dance together I would love it
i remeber kupono saying how difficult was going for him to be in character because the theme of addiction was close to home and he nailed it. i love Cole's as well more mechanical and controlling a different kind of addiction but still raw and cruel in the best sense of course . i loved lindseys facial expressions i think its true what nigel told kayla about the fact of not being able to see her face all the time took something away from the interpretation although she was great with the fluidity of the movements. both are great performances!
I am sorry to say, but of they had done the original dance...I don't think that it would be one of the best, most memorable, most touching dances in the shows history.... They are robotic. They don't have the emotion. It just feels like they are counting steps and trying to remember the next move.... And the dancing is just not nearly as good. Ok the other dance she looks like she.is literally fighting for her life.
Lindsay's expressions make me cry. This version is IT. Cole is evil and Lindsay is angelic and is in anguish trying to get away from him. LOVE this one.
I love seeing the same choreography performed by different people. In my opinion, the original isn't better than this one per se - just different. There's a different dynamic that comes with each different person performing a piece. In this one, Lindsay looks more in control - almost like a rebellious young woman who willingly self-destructs. In the original piece, Kayla looked completely powerless - like Kupono (the addiction) had full control. I prefer the original piece, but I appreciate both performances. This is great choreography.
I really did not enjoy this one that much. I don't think there wasn't enough emotion coming from the girl and the guy seemed to not be playing much of an addicting role that he was supposed to be. They danced beautifully but I have to give it to the original.
I love this one so much more than the original. If they were to have been the firsts to perform this piece, then everyone would love them more as well. It's natural to always think the first is the best.
Emily Daily I disagree, this one was empty and lacked the connection that Kupono’s and Kayla had. I didn’t get a single chill with this one where as with the original it still gives me chills even after watching it 20+ times. But I understand that for you, you preferred this one.
Cole is an incredibly strong dancer, as is his partner. But the height disparity works against the duo. Also, I argue with Cole's interpretation. It's too wooden. Addiction doesn't present itself as all-out evil. If it did, people wouldn't get addicted. It's totally seductive. It feels good -- until it doesn't. The peak of this dance is choreographed as the moment when you fully feel this seductive malevolence: The woman does an assisted reverse to a 90-degree split, and her partner drags his head and open mouth up the length of her free leg. Those are the crucial "two seconds" the original male dancer discussed in the sytycd premiere. She is fully surrendered and vulnerable; he is in total control. And that instant should contain full-on, X-rated dom intent. We should cringe, watching it. See the original. It'll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
@Ariana. Try re-watching this through an addiction or mental health lens...and focus on the overall message of the story they're telling. You may see more emotion from them if you take away the critical thinking.
Cole was BRILLIANT in this. Lindsay was good, but obviously, as a ballroom dancer, lacks the technique and style that Kayla has as a jazz/contemporary dancer. Because of that, I don't think it's fair to judge Lindsay too harshly. HOWEVER, Cole stole the show. He made this piece for me by taking an approach that, like an addiction, is amoral in nature. His facial expressions and movements create this huge disconnect and are almost robotic (in a good way) in nature, as if he does not have a conscience. Kupono, on the other hand, I feel took the approach where the addiction was malevolent and immoral in nature which doesn't accurately portray addiction, in my opinion. addictive behaviors/substances are not moral or immoral by nature, they are just things that simply exist and I thought the disconnect Cole portrayed just completely stole the show and made the message of this piece have so much more of an impact
Brooke Graczyk I work with addicts and Kupono’s interpretation is EXACTLY what drugs are to addicts. It’s sinister, malevolent and very immoral ie it doesn’t care if it kills you or destroys your family. Cole’s was to robotic, drugs aren’t robotic
Kyle Roberts dude like im not gonna star an argument, but Kupono was way better than cole, cole dance good, but it was to choreography, this dance is to tell an history not just dance
Something about Lindsay's insufficient contemporary training, that made this piece more raw!! It's not fluid like the original, its raw, dirty, intense...which is why I love this one more if i were to compare. But if you study both pieces, you'd actually see that they are VERY different.
to me it didn't seem like it flowed its like the other is doing one thing and the another was doing another, its not like the drug has become her and controlling her.
....No.... Nope. Not even close. He is too stiff and twitchy. He doesn't have the strength of presence that Kupono had. She seemed stronger than him, and she had to hold back because he wouldn't or couldn't be that forboding force that addiction truly is. Original moved me to tears almost every time I watched it or even heard the song. They should have left the classics alone. Just like movies, there are things you don't just 'remake'
i dont agree with this performance. Cole, why would you choose to perform like this? You look like an psycho with stiff movements and no emotions. What makes the original version is so moving is because Kupono's dangerous temptation and Kayla's vulnerability. Maybe they are trying to do something different, unfortunately there is nothing left.
Cole was one of my all-time favorite dances on the show. And we all know how well Lindsay has done.
Kayla and Kupono made me cry.
This made me wanna watch the original one.
I think the fact that Kapono had a friend who suffered from addiction was impactful. I still tear up watching the original. It was more heart felt.

Both routines where
cole was better than kupono. far more chilling. that being said, kayla was more emotionally present than lindsey.
I have to disagree Kupono was much better. Kayla and Kupono made it real.
in what world those Cole did better than kupono?
+lucas felipe in the world of interpretive dance being interepretive. which is always.
+Cayla McL that's your opinion
Kyle Roberts dude like im not gonna star an argument, but Kupono was way better than cole, cole dance good, but it was to choreography, this dance is to tell an history not just dance
Honestly didn't like it at all
Why did they tey to redo this. Kayla and kupono win hands down
Something about Lindsay's insufficient contemporary training, that made this piece more raw!!
Cole should have won
Blegh.. hyper focused on being perfect. Where's the raw painful emotion? Kayla and Kupono knew the true meaning behind this piece
Me gusta más la versión de Kayla y Kupono!
Personally I think this one was a million times better than the original
This seems like a comedy parody, not even comparable to K&K
....No....
Lindsay is not a very emotional dancer. She has technique but no emotional connection.
This is like Dirty Dancing 2. It's crappy compared to the original Dirty Dancing.
Lindsay didn't have the emotional maturity imo.
I favor the original
it isnt as good as the other , she seems emotionless
Umm no.
Nothing like the first one im sorry
Nothing compared to the original Nice try but it’s just not gonna work nothing can beat the piece of Kayla and Kupono
this is not as good as the original, sorry.
i dont agree with this performance. Cole, why would you choose to perform like this? You look like an psycho with stiff movements and no emotions. What makes the original version is so moving is because Kupono's dangerous temptation and Kayla's vulnerability. Maybe they are trying to do something different, unfortunately there is nothing left.
I dnt like this as much as first
Cole > Kupono
Kayla >>>>>> Lindsay
This is honestly disrespectful...
nope ..nothing compared to the original
Cute... but with Kay & Kup was.... stunning...I have still chills *-*
Why is this even a thing..TheOriginal was one of the best pieces in the entirety of the show.
