It is a great asset to know how to chord on a piano and know what notes (degrees of the scale) are in I, IV, and V chords BEFORE starting to play tenor banjo. As a pianist, I have done that and it''s essential theory no matter what instrument you play. Most chords on a tenor banjo tuned CGDA are exactly the same except they are played in open harmony. For example, a major F7 chord in root position is played F-C-A-Eb (skipping every other note of the chord) on the tenor instead of F-A-C-Eb like you would in close harmony on a piano. I believe the only reason why it's called "keyboard harmony" is because, as it often is when playing it on a piano, you know what notes are in the chord and the top note of the chords always follows the melody line. That can be accomplished by playing the appropriate chords in different inversions (forms) up the neck such that the top note of each chord (melody note) is always on top. That is the note you would vocalize if you were singing the song.
Position playing is the correct and precise way. Knowing your finger board is alot more then just learning chords. By know your fingerboard along with know and perfecting scales and broken thirds and knowing what the chords are made up of. Teaching tab to students today don't work there are no short cuts in playing the right way and then and only then that banjo will light up a new world just like the older players of yesteryear
"The Theory Behind Chord Symbols"...Is this a book that you wrote/published? Do you have any others, that you've written, available? What would you suggest to help one learn to play the tenor banjo well?
Eddy's book is available as a free pdf from his website. Unfortunately, Eddy passed away - a tragic loss! - but his website is still online, for the time being.
@@RobMacKillop1 My condolences to his family. Eddy was a major figure in the tenor banjo community, very influential. Luckily, there is a ton of materials that he left us with, for us to enjoy the beauty of the tenor banjo. His daily video uploads are dearly missed. God bless. ✝️
Thanks Eddy.
