Fascinating especially as one of my distant ancestors moved from Wales and worked as a Mine Manager in Salford. Allegedly it used to be possible to get from Agecroft to Audenshaw underground and exit via the Snipe Pit! The Snipe used to have a Victorian style steam -driven winding engine that would chuff merrily as it hauled-up the cages but it went in the 1950s. The land is now a retail park.
My 3 x Great Grandfather William Taylor lived in the Colliers Buildings on the site of Pendleton Colliery and he was shown in the 1881 Census as Stationary Engine Driver
Wow, I lived in Pendleton in the late 60's as a kid and never knew anything about the Pendleton Colliery! I did used to go fishing though at the site of Clifton Hall Colliery. It was a wasteland even then but no trees or anything and nothing that told me that it ever was a colliery. There was a decent gravel pit there though and was a popular fishing spot.
I HAVE JUST PUT A VID ON HERE GOING ROUND ASKERN COLLIERY PIT SITE.I DID THE SAME AS YOU WITH THE PIECE OF COAL BUT MINE WAS A LUMP OF STONE.I SAID THIS ISN'T A PIECE OF COAL COS THERE'S NON LEFT HERE BUT ACCORDING TO WHAT I HEAR THERE IS 100 YEARS OF COAL UNDER MY FEET.PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.
